Thank you for the report, Calvin!  By any chance, do you know how many Shop decks showed up?

Will Dayton, Joel Lim, Mickey Mahr, and maybe a couple others. Definitely a smaller percentage than usual though the deck is obviously in flux right now.

DiJohn played shops, right? And I played another guy on shops in round 1, he was fairly new to the format.

6 or 7 I think in 32. So down about 10% overall I think?

I'll go dig the lists out tonite and get that to ya bro. If i recall it was about 6 or 7. i'm leaning towards 6 being the right number. not a good day to be in the MUD.

Cheers,
Cal

Thank you, Calvin, but no worries.  I was just looking for a ballpark, I'm just trying to gauge where Mishra's at right now.

Nick, I think Mishra's (the card itself) is even better now with the opportunity to play Thirst for Knowledges. Blue shops is not only possible but it was at one time pretty good

The concept behind the deck was borderline playable.  There were some cute cards (the 4/3 flyer whose name escapes me comes to mind), but the underlying issue was that you were forced to play lands that produced colored mana.

Splashing blue leaves me with a weaker mana base, as those blue-producing lands will come at the cost of cards like Ancient Tomb.  Playing something like Thirst for Knowledge also dis-incentivizes playing Spheres, which is really dangerous right now.

Consider this; is Thirst for Knowledge better in a blue deck with counter-magic, draw spells, etc., or is it better in a Shop deck?  Many of the strategies that the Shop deck wants to put to work nerf Thirst for Knowledge.

I've actually played Thirst for Knowledge in Shops before (though I had Gilded Lotus in my deck back then).  It's an ancient reference, but it's one that can be called on.  If you were going to play a Thirst for Knowledge Shop deck, you'd need to be light on Spheres and you'd want to make use of Welder (to turn Thirst's pitch aspect into an asset).  At the very least, you'd likely want to be U/R.

That leaves you with an awkward mana base, a fragile creature you need to lean on (that's hit by Misstep (and it's not like you can just throw Caverns in this deck, like we did with MUD Marinara)), and a draw engine which you may not really need, and makes your Spheres counteractive.

I'm all for trying new things, and Lord knows I've been wrong many times before, but I don't like the idea of Thirst in Shop decks.  I'm exceptionally pessimistic on Shops right now, and if I had to play in a tournament, I wouldn't run them.

I guess it boils down to this:

If you're playing Thirst and Welders, would you rather have:

Force of Will
Ancestral Recall
Dack Fayden
Jace, the Mind Sculptor
Time Walk
Demonic Tutor
Yawgmoth's Will
Time Vault
Mana Drain

Or:

Mishra's Workshop
Smokestack
Crucible of Worlds
Wasteland
Strip Mine
Sphere of Resistance/Thorn of Amethyst
Tangle Wire
Sundering Titan/big game-ending bots

Honestly, I'd rather have the blue spells.

Well I have the 4 German Foil Thirst for Knowledges set aside for you for when you want to add them to your Workshop deck. I hear there are a lot of fans of 7/10 Split and The Gilded Claw. Smile
