I think mana crypt deserves the slot, mainly because you can do a turn one oath of druids with forbidden orchard.(It's an extra Mox) it also makes it possible to do a turn 2 Jace tms.
These two things make it worth running imo, despite the risk of taking 3 damage each turn, you just have to decide whether this card is crucial enough for your gameplan considering the downside and ocasional losses.

Great job on the event, Rich. I think an Academy-friendly mana base is important to augment the Jace plan and the hardcast monster plan. I'm not sure what the best way to achieve that is without the toys of Auriok slotting so conveniently into the Academy-pumper role.
The card See Beyond is very reasonable for shuffling monsters back into the library.

How about siding out Mana Crypt in matchups where lots of hate is expected to be bearded in by your opponent and the games are likely to go long?
Usually, in g1, t1-2 Oath + Orchard can only be stopped by FoW. In g2, it is far more risky to tap the Orchard (or Mana Crypt) to play t1-2 Oath, because they will probably have an answer for your Oath. Just an idea though, it might not be the correct approach.
Also, one way to up the count of artifact to support academy might be the addition of Top and/or Engineered Explosives. EE is somewhat similar to deed (which is superb here) and fits nicely to the 5c manabase.
Anyways, this version of Oath is awesome, it reminds me of the Terastodon Oath to some degree - very robus and flexible.

Sun Titan was too situational. I played Inferno Titan over them and was very, very happy. I appreciate your write-up, Rich. This part stood out most to me, mostly because Sun Titan sounded so good on paper. I still need to play more with the deck (was busy all weekend and missed the p9) but Inferno Titan wasn't a card I was super excited about running.

Wouldn't Bogardan Hellkite be better than Inferno Titan?

I guess the turn you Oath into it, in theory, yeah. However, if you end up having to hardcast it, 6 is a lot more manageable than 8. Plus, with all the ways to Firebreathe him in this list, Titan swinging in unblocked can be substantially more damage. In the end, I think on the balance Titan ends up deal more damage. For example, versus a goldfish, Hellkite does 10 over two turns. Titan deals 12, plus 1 for each Red mana you have over the same two turn.

Being able to hardcast the Titan is very important. We can certainly Oath into a better monster. But Inferno Titan is much easier to cast than those better monsters.

Makes sense. At times I am ok with paying more mana for Hellkite having Flash. Then again, I run Mana Drain in my Oath list. I will give Inferno Titan a whirl, though. Also, kudos on assembling a masterpiece, Rich.

What kind of creature sideboarding have you been trying against the various matchups? I've usually been pulling Inferno out for Elesh against dredge.

Rich, I am curious if you considered any number of Engineered Explosives for the sideboard?
An EE for 0 can certainly help clear up tokens you gave them, or of course Monks or Elementals. I have also used it often to destroy my own Mana Crypt when need be. There is also it's effect versus Shops and Spheres, which I also consider a benefit over Pernicious Deed. Don't get me wrong, Deed is one of my top 3 favorite Magic cards ever, but this is just an idea that came to me when reading over your issue with Mana Crypt.

I played your list yesterday at mr nice guy for the vintage CQ, and ended up 3-2. My only change was to swap 2 tormod's crypts in the side for 2 ravenous traps, and they won me at least one match/round. My losses were to grixis pyromancer and... *gasp* modern eldrazi + tombs . The pyromancer matches were fairly close but dack fayden going unchecked into an emblem was very bad news. The list definitely proved itself against shops and storm though, and void winnower was fantastic. The strip mine was also great. The only card that never felt right all day was yawgmoth's will, given we no longer have vault/key.

Great looking list Rich, kudos on your brewage! I will be testing your ideas, but I'm pondering about Yawgmoth's Will as well. It might suffer from the inclusion of both Dig Through Time and Treasure Cruise (and the omission of Vault/Key obviously). However I would consider cutting Treasure Cruise before Will, as the thought of not using Yawgmoth's Will makes me incredibly sad .
