The time has come again for the monthly Montreal Type 1 tourney.
As always, the first prize is cash, while the rest of the top 8 will be store credits.

Last month, part of the Toronto and Quebec crew joined us, and Razor went all the way to first prize with his Oshawa Madness.

Expect to see lots of Goblins (combo or sligh), Landstill, Madness, Tog, Control, Suicide, TnT and Workshop.dec variants, and of course some random. Overall, the environnement is quite healthy! And 90% of the players are actually fun to against!!!

Your's truly will be there again, making sure that everyone has fun.

(For those of you who don't know me, I'm the loudest player there!)  Razz

I don't think I'll be able to come this month to play, as it's Superbowl Sunday and I've got crap loads of homework, but I'll probably stop by to trade/watch.

At this point I've no one to carpool with so it is looking doubtful that I'll be defending my title.  I haven't completely given up yet tho'.

Francois Mathivet won with Dragon after his opponent agreed to split the prize with him.

I'll have a complete listing of all the decks tonight or later this week.

Well, this is my first real report. I'm gonna try to give iy all and hope that I won't stick on the details too much. I've asked all my fellow opponent to write down their initial hand and what they sided in against me. I was really surprised by the generous help they provided me. Thanks a lot guys!

I hope you enjoy it!

This time around, we were only 30 players, mostly due to the fact that it was the Superball that Sunday. So we duked it out for five rounds.

The top 8 was composed a these following decks:
1. Maxime Godbout l'hébreux with LANDSTILL.
2. Jean-Phillipe Keable with LANDSTILL.
3. Guillaume Ouimet with U/R STACKER with Lodestone Myr + Winter Orb.
4. François Mathivet with DRAGON.
5. Martin Éric Gauthier (MEG) with MINDSLAVER.
6. Siméon Lajoie with U/R STACKS.
7. Éric Côté with A BEAUTIFUL MIND.
8. Olivier Cloutier with SLIGH.

Top 4 was composed of Dragon vs Mindslaver and U/R Stacks vs ABM.

Finals was ABM vs Dragon.

Congradulations to all!

I was playing my slightly modified version of TNT (Toad's build). I ended up with a 3-2 records, and one of them I lost because of mana screw.

Here's my decklist:

1 anger
4 goblin welder
1 squee
1 uktabi oragutan
1 duplicant
4 juggernaut
1 karn, silver golem
1 platinum angel
2 solemn simulacrum
4 su-chi
1 triskelion
3 blood moon
4 pyrostatic pillars
4 survival of the fittest
7 solomox
1 grim monolith
1 mana crypt
1 mana vault
2 mountain
4 forest
4 mishra's workshop
4 taiga
1 strip mine
4 wasteland

Sideboard

1 viashino heretic
1 elf replica
1 triskelion
2 naturalize
2 artifact mutation
3 chalice of the void
3 powder keg
2 tormod's crypt

The changes I made to the deck were to replace Wooded Foothills with an additional mountain and forests. I removed them because there is a lot of control with Stifle in Montreal. Also, the addition of Powder Keg in the sideboard was to control the board against weenies such as goblins and elves.

Round 1: Justin Wilder (Jamino) playing VENGEUR MASQUÉ.

Justin is this 15 year old kid who'll ask everyone to lend him cards in order for him to complete his deck. I lend in 3 Birds of Paradise and 3 Back to Basics. He's a great kid and knows how to play well.

Game 1: He starts!

Justin's hand: Forest, Birds Of Paradise, Brainstrom, Volrath's Shapeshifter, Phyrexian Dreadnought, Zantid Swarm

My hand: Taiga, Grim Monolith, Goblin Welder, Forest, Black Lotus, Juggernaut, Mishra's Workshop.

1. He play a forest and a Bird.
2. I draw a Wasteland, play my Workshop and Lotus, sac the Lotus for 3 red, bring Welder and Juggy! ROAR! Burn for 1.
3. He plays a Tropical and brings out Volrath's Shapeshifter.
4. I waste his Tropical and swing with Juggy!
5. He declares an attack phase, discards the Dreadnought and swings for 12.
EOT: I switch his Shapeshifter for his Dreadnought to clear the board on his side (Birds is tapped)
6. I draw a Strip mine which destroys his forest and bring out Su-Chi. He concedes.

Sideboarding:

Justin: 2 Uktabi Orangutan, 1 Viridian shaman and 2 Ground Seal.

Me: 2 Tormod's Crypt, 3 Powder Keg, 2 Naturalize, 1 Triskelion and 1 Viashino Heretic.

Game 2: He starts!

Justin's hand: Tropical Island, Wooded Foothills, Illusionary Mask, Survival of the Fittest, Ancestral Recall, Phyrexian Dreadnought.

My hand: Mox Sapphire, Goblin welder, Mishra's Workshop, Triskelion, Wasteland, Platinum Angel, Taiga.

1. He plays Tropical.
2. I draw Karn, waste his Tropical. In response, he Ancestral's. It resolves, and I play my Mox Sapphire.
3. He plays Wooded Foothills. Discard's Squee and other cards.
4. I draw a Powder Keg. Play Taiga and cast the Keg which needs permission. He forces it with a Shapeshifter.
5. He's misses a land drop.
6. I play Workshop and drop Karn.
7. Draw-Go! Missed another land drop.
8. I play a forest and cast a Triskelion. Karn swings for 4.
9. Draw-Go! Missed another land drop.
10. I draw a Su-Chi which I cast along with a Welder.
11. Justin Concedes...

2-0

I really hate it when this happens. It feel cheap by winning when he's mana screwed. Oh well... It's bound to happen to me also!

Justin' decklist:

1 black lotus
1 mox emerald
1 mox sapphire
4 illusionary mask
4 phyrexian dreadnought
4 brainstorm
1 ancestral recall
4 force of will
1 xantid swarm
1 time walk
1 tradewind rider
1 phage the untouchable
3 volrath's shapeshifter
4 birds of paradise
1 nantuko vigilante
2 quirion ranger
4 survival of the fittest
3 wall of root
1 voidmage apprentice
1 squee, goblin nabob
2 flooded strand
4 forest
4 island
4 tropical island
2 windsweapt heath
1 wooded foothills

Round 2: Giullaume Ouimet playing U/R Stacker with Winter Orbs and Lodestone Myr.

Game 1: He starts!

Guillaume's hand: 2 Winter Orb, Sphere of Resistance, Mana Crypt, Goblin Welder, Stripmine and Volcanic Island.

My hand:  Goblin Welder, Squee, Pyrostaic Pillars, Forest, Strip Mine. (I had to mulligan twice!!!)

1. He plays Volcanic and a Welder.
2. I draw Survival, and play a forest.
3. He sacs a Wooded Foothills for Volcanic, plays Spheres and swings with the Welder.
4. I draw a Blood Moon and and strip his Volcanic.
5. He strips my lone forest and swings again with Welder.
6. I can't believe my luck. I draw my third Blood Moon, and then play my Workshop.
7. He swings with Welder.
8. I draw a Juggy!!!
9. He swings with Welder.
10. I draw Anger, which I discard.
11.He discards Orb.
12. I draw and play a Mountain.
EOT: He Switches Spheres for Orb.
13. He plays Mountain, Mox Pearl, Crypt, Sol Ring, Orb, welds the Crypt for Sphere.
14. I play a Mox and discard Squee.
15. He casts Tangle Wire and Lodestone Myr, to which I concede.

He got a somewhat good start while I had to mulligan down to 5. Even then, my hand wasn't very good.

Sideboarding:

Guillaume: He sided out 2 Winter Orb, a black vise and a Gorila Shaman for 4 Tormod's Crypt.

Me: I side out 2 Pillars, Angel, 3 Blood Moon and Duplicant for 2 Naturalise, 3 Keg and 2 Artifact Mutation.

Game 2: I starts!

My hand: 2 Wasteland, Taiga, Uktabi Orangutan, Survival of the Fittest, Pyrostatic Pillars, Juggernaut.

Guillaume's hand: Wooded Foothills, Mox Emerald, Sol Ring, Goblin Welder, Strip Mine, Winter Orb, Volcanic Island.

1. I play a Wasteland.
2. He sacs Wooded for Mountain, casts Welder, Emerald and Sol Ring.
3. I draw Su-Chi, play Taiga and Survival.
4. He strips my Taige and brings out Lodestone Myr. Swings with Welder.
5. Draw Artifact Mutation and play Wasteland.
6. He plays Wooded Foothills and Crypt. Swings with Welder and Myr for 6.
7. I draw Welder.
EOT: Sacs Wooded for Vocanic.
8. He draws and cast Juggy. Game over.

As you can see, I was somewhat lucky by having Stri Mine in his starting hand for both duels. Meanwhile, having to mulligan twice during the first game doesn't help much either. I was somewhat unlucky during game 2, because I had a couple of Wastelands, Uktabi and drew an Artifact Mutation early on. As they say, sh*t happens.

Here's Guillaume decklist:

2 thirst of knowledge
1 tinker
1 time walk
1 ancestral recall
4 goblin welder
1 gorilla shaman
1 whell of fortune
4 lodestone myr
4 tangle wire
4 sphere of resistance
4 winter orb
3 juggernaut
1 triskelion
1 memory jar
1 black vise
1 mana vault
1 sol ring
1 mana crypt
1 black lotus
1 mox pearl
1 mox sapphire
1 mox jet
1 mox ruby
1 mox emerald
4 mishra's workshop
4 volcanic ilsand
4 wooded foothills
3 wasteland
1 stripmine
1 tolarian academy
1 mountain

That's all for tonight.Keep in touch as I'll be posting my 3 other match-ups....That is if anybody cares!  Very Happy

Thanks y'all!

Only 30 players? That's a low turnout but you said it, the SuperBowl does have some influence.

I'm interested in hearing more from your performance.

I felt pretty sick saturday night, so I figured I'd wake up sunday, see how I felt and decide from there.  When I woke up with a fever, a hacking cough, sneezes and an ear infection, I decided Magic just wasn't in the cards.

Quote from: Jamino
Well, here is my little report on the superbowl Sunday t1 tourney

I wake up at 8:30 and I decide that I will play UG Vengeur Masque. I had played the deck once befor online and stoped because I did not have the masks and thus no way to play it in real life. However lucky me, the day before me and Francois Mathivet (Tom Bombadil), who owns every playable t1 card ever arrange a trade for my extra Unlimited Lotus for a Mox Emerald (which I was missing) and 3 Illusionary Masks. I was very happy, and arrived at 10:30 at the Mc. Dos, for the trade and end up talking with another T1 player also waiting for the store to open and to finalize a trade about what he would be playing and odd choices. Finally at 10:50 they come, and we end up making a trade that we thought would take a half hour in 5 minutes and I borrow a few cards I need like a tradewind Rider, a wall of roots, and other random cards no one has with them. Lucky for me though, a few minutes before the tournaments starts, Jules (Cancerman) has the birds and back to basics that I need, I am off and ready.
I feel quite good about my build, but not to good about my ability to play and understand all the tricks with the deck as I have had no time to playtest it.
Here is what I played:

1 Black lotus
1 Mox emerald
1 Mox sapphire
4 Illusionary mask
4 Phyrexian dreadnought
4 Brainstorm
1 Ancestral recall
4 Force of will
1 Xantid swarm
1 Time walk
1 Tradewind rider
1 Phage the untouchable
3 Volrath's shapeshifter
4 Birds of paradise
1 Nantuko vigilante
2 Quirion ranger
4 Survival of the fittest
3 Wall of root
1 Voidmage apprentice
1 Squee, goblin nabob
2 Flooded strand
4 Forest
4 Island
4 Tropical island
2 Windsweapt heath
1 Wooded foothills

Sideboard:
4 Ground Seal
3 Back to Basics
2 Xantid Swarm
1 Gilded Drake
2 Uktabi Orangutan
1 Viridian Shaman
2 Stifles

Round one: Jules Verault (Cancerman) with TnT

Bah, out of thirty plays I have to be paired against the one person I did not want to face in the early round. After a little talk about TMD and him writing a report, I agree to write my hand, and sideboarding.

Game one:

I play a forest and a Birds of paradise
He goes all broken with Workshop, lotus, Jugernaut and Welder. Gota hate those starts.
After a few shifter and survival tricks, I get a naught, attack and being a complete numbskull forget to play the land and untap my brids with my ranger. As a result, he welds my Shapeshifted Dreadnaought with a real one, and I lose it. I die soon after to a piece of fish.

Game two:

I play Tropical island which he wastes. I respond with an ancestral recall and draw some good cards. I play a Wooded foothills at some point and I force a Poweder Keg, but I get terrible mana screwed and his threats just never die out. Juggy, Sushi, Karn….BAH so many. I scoop soon after.

Record: 0-1-0
What a way to start the day. I now have to win all my games. I do not want to draw unless in the last round, as I phear the tiebreakers.

Round 2: Someon with Mono U Fish

I do not remember very much except him trying to beat me with a flying man and me resolving, a mask and a survival, then killing him with Dreadnaght/Phage through wihich I had to explain how the damage went on stack and all. By the time that was over we still had 40 minutes to the match.

Game 2: He gets me down to a really low ammont of life, with his little faeires and merfolk, but I soon slip through a Mask, and procede to beat him to death with a creature in wich all the creatures in his deck would need to chump to kill.

After the game he asks me to take a look at his deck, and I help him, and even give him a set of null rods with which I said he should play ontop of some stifles. He was playing a very suboptimal build with Counterspells and a morphling and no wastes/strips. I wish him luck.

Before the third round I go blow bucks on some really good candy.

Round 3: I have no idea but I don’t remember what I played against and who played it. Sorry (to the readers and the opponent) All I know is I won.

2-1-0
Well, at this point I am not feeling terribly bad as I need to win the next game and hopefully be able to draw into top8.

Round 4: Someon with ABM

Wow, im not to sure what to do, and I panic when he goes lotus, moxen, seal of cleansing and devote witness. Follows it up with a scroll rack and a land tax and starts drawing and drawing. I concede soon after, seeing as how it would take me a really long time to win if possible, and that I had no more shifters, he plowed them all.

Game 2, the deck comes out like it should, a few birds and rangers, survival, mask, kabam, phage goes in for the kill. Not to much to say here. He does get a witness but he somehow forgets to use it and prefers to play a tog which he chumps and discards everything btu doesn’t even want to remove to kill my tog? Go figure. Anyways, damage on stack phage kills him.

Game 3: Well this was really messed up, we had 20 minutes left, and nothing happens at all. I am at 42 and he is at 13, he plays a witness, and I attack during my 5th turn of the last. He has a swords however and has another one for my force of will. We end up tying.

Now, I canont stress how pissed I was here, he made so many mistakes, and was just a plane bad player. He however owned all the power, and miraculously always top decks a swords or witness when he needed. I would cry if this guy made finals.

2-1-1 and this is 5 round, so I need to win this one if I want to have a shot at top 8. I get paired down, and my opponent gives me the win knowing that I have a shot at top8. We play a few games for fun without side, and he crushes me with his bargain/rector/illusions madness. Standings go up, and I am as angry as can be when I see my place. 9th.
And this was decided by the 3rd tiebreakers. ARRRGRHHGH! How frustrating. Now I had to watch a top 8 where I wasn’t in L, o well, not much I can do.

However guesse who was in the top 8? Mr ABM, well, I am happy for him making the top8, and I guesse he must have been doing something well if he is able to go all the way!
That is right, he went to the finals where he split with Francois (Tom Bombadil) who was playing dragon.

Good for them!
