1  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Black Fish on: June 14, 2005, 01:56:42 pm

Fish and WTF are really really hard.  Not unwinable, but they're creatures are a lot better than yours (WTF in particular).  For example, two games in a row I got off a quick Negator and mana denial and dropped my opponent down to 5, only to have a mongrel get in the way and sweep things up for him.  I want something better in the board than Echoing Decay and Plague Spitter to bring in against these decks (though Diabolic Edict is OK).

Hi, I was probably your opponent on apprentice today with WTF, we played on mIRC Very Happy

I was also interested in this deck and I want to compare it with other tempo-creatures decks, such as WTF. I confirm that Skirges are really good versus aggro for their evasion. Have you tested against combo? It seems that you have not good chances of winning. What can we side in? Any idea?

Isn't Gaea's Blessing necessary? In my little test I found myself many times without creatures.

I would cut Rorix for a Woodripper.

Umh... I'm not convinced. Woodripper is quite awkward, of course he can kill Platinum and other nasty artifacts, but maindecking him seems too narrow.

Instead, Hydra can kill Platinum AND other creatures, such as Welder or other stuff. Besides, she can ping herself in order to oath up another creature.

The only good reasons I see to maindeck Woodripper are the fact that you can cast him from your hand or the fact that you play in a meta full of artifacts.
I´m sorry, but I still don't understand why Cabal Ritual was included...

I mean, the original BG Oath used to have 1 Chrome Mox, 1 Mox Diamond and 1 Mana Crypt (besides Lotus Petal) to go for a first turn Oath, and Stephen version uses... 2 Cabal Rituals? Whats the point?

Probably because you run null rods maindecked.

Hi, I'm now testing this deck, but I made only few matches, especially against Sensei-Sensei. I won the majority of them because the hate level is so high and well backed by strong disruption (Duress, Cabal Therapy, Unmask).

What would you suggest for the side in a generic meta? What about Root Maze and Naturalize to begin with? Are there any cards that are good against particular  match ups? For instance Fish can be a bad matchup with their Meddling Madge and stuff like that, or also a fast aggro.

As other sideboard options, I thought of [card]Smother[/card] against Welder or Psychatog decks, [card]Mutilate[/card] or [card] Night of Souls' Betrayal[/card] against Fish-esque decks. Are these too mana expensive?

Also, is Ancient Hydra playable in the place of Rorix in order to have a response to Platinum Angel maindeck?

Thanks for the suggestions.

Bye, Fabio
5  Eternal Formats / Creative / [Budget] Oath on: April 04, 2005, 02:46:37 pm
I'm trying a budget version of oath with B/U/G too, but I strongly think that Intuition+Ak is too mana-intensive for a deck without mana drain. Intuition+Ak in one turn costs 5 mana! You really can't afford to wait until turn three to cast an intuition EOT and then wait another whole turn to cast an AK.

I prefer to run Skeletal Scrying, which can't be blasted, and takes less slots.

Where i live, no proxy are allowed, and this sucks. However, what are your suggestions for a deck without proxies? In particular I have concerns regarding the manabase, I'm afraid of using artifact land because they weak the manabase.

Besides that, splashing black would weak the manabase, which is my principal concern because it seems to me very fragile

yeah, you're right about the graves. What card would you put maindeck against fish decks?
9  Eternal Formats / Creative / 5-Proxy Welder-Intuition on: January 27, 2005, 04:21:21 pm
Very good idea, I was interested in that survival-welder deck too.

I have not obviously tested your list, but I will post to you the first questions which came into my mind:

My meta is plenty of Fish decks, how this deck work with a Null Rod in play and wastelands?

You said that you would cut Bazaars, what card do you think to use to replace them? Have you ever tried Lightning Greaves?

Thanks for posting this deck, bye

Hi,

the problem with this very funny deck, as already said, is the fact that when your opponent put a threat creature during the first two turns, there is very little you can do, besides hoping to find a powder keg in time. Can this problem be avoided by splashing another colour, also if I understand that this make the deck a little different?

Hi, I tested the new decklist with skullclamps in a few match against control (4-5), in particular against a MonoBlue version with Ophidian, Back to Basic and a ton of counters; this deck is excellent againt this archetype. With maindecked Swarms, Survival, Genesis, Skullclamp, Witness, they simply can't compete with your treats. If you play your Survival and they counter it, you have 4 eternal witness which let you replay it. I won easily these matches. Also, with the stabilized manabase, their wastelands and B2B aren't so scaring.

From other tests, I've come to the idea that Genesis is really strong, both versus Control decks, in order to replay countered welders or swarm, and against decks with many spot removal such as Fish or Sligh.

Also, I'm running a budget version, with the use of a Shield Sphere, two Tree of tales and 4 Wild Grown in order to accelerate the green sources of mana for the survival chain and for the Witness and other more expensive spell, and they are working pretty well for me.

This is obviously only a small contribution to this deck, but I feel that I post this as a sort of thanking for sharing your work.

Bye, Fabio

First of all, I like very much your deck, expecially his resistence to control. I tested a few games against various decks, and I appreciate the cutting of blue. Yes, tinker is Broken, but too often welding in a Titan was more a problem for me that for my opponent. It really hurts welding in a Titan when you have in play 2 taiga and a tropical, you are stalled more than your opponent. I'm testing a budget version of this deck, and I think that it can do very well; I wonder how many artifact lands should I play in order to have a target for the welder, and if I can replace some acceleration with the use of Wild Grown, which often has given me a good quantity of green mana for the survival.

Duplicant recursion via Goblin Welder is just like double-SToP against Darksteel Colossus, and the uprising of Control Magic is definitely bad news. TnT can play Gilded Drake, too, which ruins your game-plan.

...Furthermore, I think that Masknaught's ultimate failure to be competitive is a result from having only 4 "must counter" spells. Limiting your game-plan to winning only after activating an Oath is a bad idea these days.

Barry

Probably you need to remember that when you oath up a colossus you have al least 2 manas open and that you run 12 counterspell, following the list previously posted

Of course, silly me. If I splash green, it adds the option of Crop Rotation.

If you do this, you could eventually play strip mine in the side and abuse it whit a multiple copies of living wish, and this looks good expecially because in your deck list Crucible does not seems as a "bonus" card (4x), but as a foundamental piece of the deck.

To jp:

I would suggest to include Crop Rotation, which can transform a forest in a Strip Mine when you have Crucible out.
