1  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Does Vintage Have Pros? on: March 07, 2005, 10:57:29 am
For me  the question is "Are you sure you want to be a magic pro?"

I have a few friends who are in fact magic "pro's" They spend 50+ hours a weeks testing, constantly travel (which costs money). They are all on the train and have not needed to PTQ it in a long time.

I like playing magic, quite a bit in fact. But It seems like they dont have as much fun as they used to. I still PTQ it now and then, and I've played at 2 PT's and Nats. But as much as I love this game, but there are many other things I love to do that I dont want to give up so that I can have zero free time and optimistically only make maybe 10-15k a year.

50 hours/week + constant travel + 15k a year = Crappy Job IMHO

Dont get me wrong, there is the alure of "I play magic for a living."
This Alure will end as soon as you exit college and you get your first real check from your first real job. It did for me.
2  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Who has Mob -err.. DCI connections?? on: February 25, 2005, 03:23:04 pm
Please trust me when I say there are several people within the DCI who are now and have been paying close attention and asking for opinions.

That being said, I can't vouch that they will make the "CORRECT"  moves with the B/R list.

But they are listening and looking.

My bad. Masticore's out. Caller's coming in when I figure out how to get both Dragon and Caller in the grave quickly. I'm still a bit unsure about caller. Ambassador's great 'cause he kills as soon as he hits play, Caller needs another turn, any other ideas?

Okay, so I need both the kill condition and Dragon in the graveyard to win. What are some quick ways to get that done? Are Intuition and Buried Alive quick enough?

Complusion....plain and simple...is the only substitute for Bazaar's

Check some of the older threads, im pretty sure there is an older primer on dragon to help you out Smile
6  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Should the Star City Game series be ten proxy? on: January 18, 2005, 04:45:57 pm
Im not sure how much power they sell at one of these events...but even a piece or two would negate a good portion of the cost to run the event.
Its nothing against any of you, but I dont think MOST players are aware of how MUCH its costs to run large events...

I agree tht 10 proxy would be a much better enviroment to play in. There is no dobt about it.

Except five proxies is faaaar more reasonable when you consider that they're also in the business of selling cards.

Yeah, but do you think that they make that much money out of selling power cards to not make it proxy10? Since, let's be honest, the power cards are proxied the most of all.

Pople who own 4 power parts usually have the money to get all 9, and thus the contrast is still too great in my opinion.

Yes, I'm fairly sure they do make more money running 5-proxy and selling some power than running 10-proxy and selling none.
Star City is in this business for two reasons; to make money, and to promote a hobby that makes them money. Dont get me wrong, I love SCG. They have done a LOT for this game and will (I'm willing to bet) continue to do more in the future. I repeat, I like SCG. But Pete has a business to run, and if I were him I'd like to think I'd be able to run it as well as they are.

The fact that they host events where the basic prize cost by EBAY standards is $3400 PLUS other stuff (juge pay, event site, etc), they allow you to play with 5 proxies and charge less than $30 is a good deal.

At least it seems like a good one to me.
8  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / How Should Wizards Recognize Unsanctioned Tournament Data? on: January 18, 2005, 12:11:56 pm
Though I'm sure no one will belive me, I have a VERY good guess that
the feelings of Wotc about this format as of the end of the year are as follows: They DO care about the format. They ARE designing cards with us in mind. They will NEVER hold proxy events. They DO care about proxy results.
And best of all they are working on a "gp" system for this format and for 1.5.

13  Eternal Formats / Creative / sorry on: November 22, 2004, 03:37:22 pm
I am a big fan of this deck back in the day too, and by all means have some fun with it.

But honestly, this deck is VERY obsolete; in many ways. Modern combo is better in almost EVERY way.

This might be a fun deck to try in legacy, but I doubt it will be competative in vintage.

Mods or admins- If you can post the link to the combo primers on TMD im sure the author of this thread would be thankfull.

Not sure if this is the right place or even if this will piss off the MODs....

The new upperdeck game came out, and I'm getting into it. Just wanted to know if anyone else on this site was as well and wanted to chat.

Alright. I know that Pestilence used to be a fairly good deck.

When exactly was that?

Major kudos for innovation, but this kinda thing is WAY too slow for type 1.

23  Eternal Formats / Creative / Do we need a Restriction Update? on: April 07, 2004, 01:12:40 pm
No it does not need to be restricted......Tog is fine the way it is.
24  Eternal Formats / Creative / 4C-Hulk Smash viable without Time Walk ? on: April 07, 2004, 12:47:04 pm
Im not saying that the deck isnt MUCH better with it.
I would still play the deck without it.
25  Eternal Formats / Creative / Do we need a Restriction Update? on: April 07, 2004, 12:38:50 pm
Once more, PLZ explain how intuion is in the same class as workshop and Bazaar.

You state intuition is broken, and even more so with DA and AK, plz tell me how its broken without these cards.

More importantly intuition costs THREE....yes its a tutor....yes it goes into yer hand...yes its an instant.....but i requires you (for the most part) to play three of the card yer going to get.

Besides restricting it wouldnt KILL tog....if we made the three restricions you propose, guess what? Tog is STILL the best deck in the format.
26  Eternal Formats / Creative / New Decks Are Hard To Make. on: April 07, 2004, 12:30:04 pm
Plz expain to me how intuition is "insanely broken" and/or its even in the same class as workshop and bazar?

Problems with intuioning? REB it :/
27  Eternal Formats / Creative / 4C-Hulk Smash viable without Time Walk ? on: April 07, 2004, 11:33:29 am

30  Eternal Formats / Creative / T2 Regional, cards, and the Type 1 player. on: April 05, 2004, 06:45:38 pm
My best? The one that got me into type 1?

I picked up a playset of english drains for $60 cash....this was four months ago.

I do appriciate you posting this thread as I will admit im not the best literary speker( ie I suck at writing stuff) and I plan on using the main post as an example to the players im getting into vintage in my area.
Its tough sometimes when the goal of power seems so far away, but I tell the players in my grounp (about 30% is powered) that they just need to keep their eyes open and look.

I plan on wearing a shirt to regionials that  has a sign on it with a picture of the power 9 that says "wanted- plz see management for details"
