Eternal Formats / Creative / What happens when the werewolf eats the silver bullets?

As I am somewhat of an outsider still to the Type 1 scene and only recently come back in I may still have an outsiders perspective. That is the only apology I will give for this thread. The metagame as we have seen it has been shifting at this very moment towards decks that run collections of wins, but how many wins are these decks truly running? What follows are deck lists directly from the Vintage Encyclopedia with their win conditions emboldened. Composite Tezzeret Control Stephen Menendian
LANDS (16): 2 Island 1 Snow-covered Island 3 Flooded Strand 1 Library Of Alexandria 3 Polluted Delta 3 Underground Sea 2 Volcanic Island 1 Tolarian Academy

Sideboard: 2 Yixlid Jailer 2 Phyrexian Negator 2 Shriekmaw 2 Slaughter pact 2 Pithing Needle 2 Tormod's Crypt 2 Hymm to Tourach 1 Rebuild Double Dragon Oath: by Matt Elias
4 Force of Will 4 Oath of Druids 4 Impulse 3 Thoughtseize 2 Duress 2 Lim-Dul’s Vault 2 Hellkite Overlord 1 Ancestral Recall 1 Brainstorm 1 Ponder 1 Negate 1 Misdirection 1 Demonic Tutor 1 Vampiric Tutor 1 Time Vault 1 Voltaic Key 1 Regrowth 1 Lat-Nam’s Legacy 1 Scroll Rack 1 Gaea’s Blessing 1 Wipe Away 1 Merchant Scroll 1 Time Walk 1 Black Lotus 1 Mox Jet 1 Mox Sapphire 1 Mox Emerald 1 Mox Pearl 1 Mox Ruby 1 Wasteland 1 Strip Mine 1 Island 4 Forbidden Orchard 3 Polluted Delta 2 Flooded Strand 3 Underground Sea 2 Tropical Island So after looking at the actual threats, things that kill/deck, we can see that each of these following decks is reliant on a silver bullet like approach. Utilizing most of their deck for resources to build up to the win or to secure board position. Whether that being counters or discard or mana denial they all work in some form to prevent the enemy from utilizing their own spells (duh). Where does this leave us? We see that the board develops beyond our control by the opponents denial effects and that is troublesome. But all of these decks rely on their win conditions for the actual win. If the tinker is stifled the opponent won't lose automatically, it just becomes harder for them. So out of this mess of an article I come with a suggestion. It's a bad card against decks with multiple win conditions, IE stax, goblins, and the like. But what it makes up for that is the readily availability of its ease in casting. Extract Sorcery Search target player's library for a card and exile it. Then that player shuffles his or her library. Pros: Blue, Eats silver bullets, always finds something good to get rid of, equal in Theoretical CA, cheap, decent sideboard alternative, lack of wishes in current meta raises effectiveness. Cons: Misdirectible, will not affect hand position, loses ground in techinical CA. I hope this will help in someones build of fish for the metagame.

Hey Guys won the random, and wanted to thank the person in 7th place and 8th place. You guys were awesome, first off 7th thanks for picking timetwister over emerald or pearl. thanks 8th place for picking pearl over emerald. Random prize = Mox emerald. Good tournament except for when they wouldnt let a couple people in for being 2-4 min late..... jerks. One of the problems i had was the judging staff acted condescending towards me when I had survival of the fittest on the board that was partially covering a root maze. He asked if there was a specific reason that my SotF covered the maze, with my response being no, he informed me that I needed to have every single card seperate unless they were the same card. I wanted to say "oh my bad I didn't know this was sanctioned, and that it was ok for you to be a dick." but I didn't.

I played at YMG too. It was a great tournament as well and a lot of TMD'ers were playing too. I played Oshawa Stompy. Yeah you can discredit it all you want, you can say "oh I'll never see that deck", keep saying it cause the metagame is ripe for it taking a niche with the budget players. Here is my list.
Oshawa 4x Hidden Gibbons 4x Wild Mongrel 4x Basking Rootwalla 4x Elvish Spirit Guide 4x Arrogant Wurm 4x Squee, Goblin Nabob 4x Null Rod 4x Survival of the Fittest 3x Root Maze 2x Chalice of the Void 4x Bazaar of Baghdad 1x Black Lotus 1x Mox Emerald 1x Lion's Eye Diamond 4x Wasteland 1x Stripmine 11x Forest
Sideboard 3x Ground Seal 3x Ifh-Biff Efreet 3x Maze of Ith 1x Spore Frog (uber anti-oath tech) 1x Genesis 4x Oxidize
Nothing has changed since Waterbury. There is very little room for change in this deck other then the anti-air stuff that Ifh does. Went 4-2, losses were to Brassman and another top 8 dragon player. Lost to Brassman in the Top 8.
Great event. Little hot in there but you get used to it.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Oshawa Stompy? Oh no another crappy report.

So here I am two weeks from waterbury, and I have just been laid-off. I'm not sure if I want to play magic anymore, but I decide to let the gods of waterbury make that decision. Do well = keep playing, do poorly = sell all 2k worth of cards. So w/o any mana drains, FoW, Workshops, any u/x lands, I realize that I have to play a mono colored hate deck.
Looking at the format I realized that Oath was not going to be there with all the Enchantment hate running rampant. I hope that by this time everybodies' s/b is shifting the 4 slots of ench hate to 2. I also hoped that people were going to be playing the fastest decks they could find in hopes of outrunning the 3Sphere. Lastly, I hoped that everybody had just forgotten about null rod, what with being able to weld it out and all.
I was dead right. Oshawa 4x Hidden Gibbons 4x Wild Mongrel 4x Basking Rootwalla 4x Elvish Spirit Guide 4x Arrogant Wurm 4x Squee, Goblin Nabob 4x Null Rod 4x Survival of the Fittest 3x Root Maze 2x Chalice of the Void 4x Bazaar of Baghdad 1x Black Lotus 1x Mox Emerald 1x Lion's Eye Diamond 4x Wasteland 1x Stripmine 11x Forest
Sideboard 3x Ground Seal 3x Ifh-Biff Efreet 3x Maze of Ith 1x Spore Frog (uber anti-oath tech) 1x Genesis 4x Oxidize
Pre-Tournament Happenings. Find out Meandeck has a new deck, so what else is new? PTW asks for some S/B advice, and I give him my 2 cents. Look at Brassmans' Brass man colection and on the very last page point out a wax back that we were just talking about trading to him. He had no idea it was there. Watch a little T4 and wait for the tournament to begin.
Round 1 Workshop Aggro /w mountains for waste protection He wins the roll. Game one Turn one 3sphere, I instantly realize I'm in a bad spot. Forest go. His turn stripmine cruicible. On to Game two S/B -4 Hiddien Gibbons +4 Oxidize Game Two Quick arrogant wurm does the trick. not much to say but I oxidized his Juggernaut. Game Three Got an active welder and w/o the Ground seal in my deck, and he had 2 trikes, the writing was on the wall. He did miss a turn where he could have killed me but it wasn't enough. He did make one mistake, where he durressed, saw arrogant wurm and 3x squee, I had 3 lands untapped, and he cast Wheel of Fortune. Fortune smiled on him and crapped on me giving me no hate whatsoever.
Matches 0-1 Games 1-2
Round 2 Oath He wins the roll Game one Akroma does her job to my face, little chance game one anyways. -4 Null Rod -1 Survival of the Fittest/ +3 Maze of Ith +1 Genesis +1 Spore Frog.
Game Two. Spore Frog swings for Lethal, having done 14 damage.
Game Three Make a huge play mistake, I have open Spore Frog and and Maze of Ith and I forget to Maze the Akroma.
Matches 0-2 Games 2-4 About this time I realize that all of connecticut hates me, due to an unfortunate incident involving two round 2's, and so I am preparing myself to sell all my cards after this next round that I lose, but no the god's enjoy playing with mortal's don't they?
Round 3 (A most assholish incident occurs) U/W angel thing like EBA Minus the black. He draws 4x Orim's Chant and 4x Abeyance, but alas they can not slow the bleeding. (side note: he would abeyance during my upkeep with squee's ability on the stack to prevent massive Mongrel damage) I could see that he was nervous with him being paired down and had lost game one, so I took advantage of it in game two.
S/b -4 Null Rod +3 Ifh-Biff +1 Genesis Assholish Event #1: I fake rules lawyer him, he casts mystical tutor and places it in his graveyard w/o searching. I yell Judge and say "Judge isn't it true that in a higher level enforced tournament if a player had placed mystical tutor in his grave w/o searching, it acts as though he just searched his library and failed to find anything? Not that I'm gonna hold it to him to do that, but is it?" The Judge agreed with me and My opponent went on to flub a few times during the match. He gets an active angel early but I get Ifh-Biff and it hurricanes enough times for him to see the writing on the wall.
Matches 1-2 Games 4-4 Round 4 GAT I win the Roll Game one I get the early beats= he gets the early demise.
S/b -4 Null Rod -1 Root Maze / +3 Maze of Ith +1 Genesis +1 Spore Frog He does very little but drops 2x togs and a dryad. I keep up the pressure with guys and spore Frog out on the board. He sees two attackers: Wurm and Frog and swings with one of his three guys. I have 2x lands and 2 guys. I decide to take it, and he passes the turn, but I have effects. Activate bazaar of baghdad draw two discard squee, squee, arrogant wurm. Madness on the stack Remove ESG from the game and madness it into play. My turn untap upkeep, return squees, draw, swing Game
Matches 2-2 Games 6-4
Round 5 Jacob Orlove playing the MeanCombo.dec He wins the die roll. Game one he drops a mox and says go I drop Wasteland go He drops Chromatic Sphere I drop Null Rod
No S/B Game Two He goes first I mulligan down to six He does the combo thing and falls short only doing 16 damage to me. Unfortunetly I have to do 36 dmg to him now. I ESG a root maze into play, I ESG a Rootwalla into play, and play Chalice for zero We Play draw go for a couple turns, while I build up my mana base and drop null rod. I can see him prepping it all for the win. He passes the turn knowing that winning is two turns away, just a land grant away. I topdeck Wasteland and play it. He could have won if any one of the three of the pieces of hate were not on the board. He entered his scoop phase after a long deliberation. I totaly lucked game two, not gonna lie.
Matches 3-2 Games 8-4 by this time I'm clawing my way out of the bottom bracket one man at a time.
Round 6 EBA Brandon Wentworth I win the roll I destroy him game one, so fast can't remember what I did but the life ticks are 19, 18, 17, 12, 7. No idea what I sideboarded here
Game 2 He keeps a hand of waste waste engineered explosives and some blue cards. I keep some hand that has first turn Rootmaze and rootwalla. He drops waste and passes. I drop forest ESG and drop rootmaze and and Rootwalla. I apply the early beats when he drops Balance wiping out my creatures it wipes out his hand and his manabase with me having only one forest he keeps Wasteland fearing bazaar. His balance was kind of enough to force me to discard 2x Basking Rootwalla. I swing again and he drops waste and says go. I drop my own waste, tapped because of Root maze, and at this point I think hes gonna waste the waste to save a real land. I swing again and pass. He drops a Fetchland and says go. I have end of turn effects, but I realize that the more time I give him before my upkeep the more likely it will be that he sees the waste about to toast his only shot at colored mana. I gamble and put another rootwalla into play off a mongrel. My Upkeep, waste the fetch, which triggers the, oh shit response. By this time I have 3x squee so the mongrel is pretty dangerous, and he concedes. Later I point out his mistake and he does the "oh fuck im such a noob".
Matches 4-2 Games 10-4 At this point I realize that I have done something amazing, I not only fought back from 0-2 but to 4-2 w/o a game loss. I am starting to play the decks that fear the Hate more and more. I chat it up with my friends Mike Panas, PTW and a few others. Look at the breakers, and realize that I will need 2x 2-0 victories for a shot at the T16. Round 7 is called and I check for my opponent...... Mike Panas. My playtesting partner, the only deck in the entire tournament that I fear with all the board control, and creature hate. We decide to play it out, but my hearts not there and in order for him to make it he has to 2-0. I make dumb mistakes and after about 15 minutes I give him the match. I can't play at all by this time and I'm wicked pissed. But thats the way it happens
Matches 4-3 Games 10-6
Round 8 Brassman playing TPS I whoop him first game, but we are having fun and Just for the hell of it im keeping track of his storm count for him. Game two he goes off turn 2 Game three he boards in his secret tech against aggro, Brass Man. He draws it and plays it not realizing that there is Root maze and Null rod in play. Quoted as saying "worst brass man ever."
Matches 5-3 Games 12-7
Slops: Oh ho ho me being an asshole. Me being dumb at 1:30 in the morning having Mike Panas get going the wrong way on I-84. Me making like 20 play mistakes. Me being my usual self and acting sarcastic to smmenen about his deck, and he took it to heart so I owe him an apology. Sorry Smmenen. And all you losers that thought that Oshawa was dead, w/o illdawg. Not staying for the after party festivities. And the crummy dealer that offered me 60 bucks on a library right after he said he could easily sell it for 100$. As soon as they started looking at it my Moronmeter went off. Everybody has a moronmeter, it's between the Pointer/Fore and the Ring Finger. The higher it raises above the other fingers the greater the moron that your dealing with.
Props: Realizing that not eating gave me and edge 2 fold. First: it made me focus on keeping sharp, Second: helped me get a buzz after one 5 dollar beer. Mike Panas for adleast representing us Spore Frog for winning me a Tropical Island for play of the day, beating out, selling magic packs out breasts, barely. Sorry Diana. Team Shortbus for being wicked cool, and Team Meandeck for being innovative with their deck design.
Peace.

I completely disagree with fork. The problem with fork is that either a.) you are casting a spell in your deck that is more powerful then the two mana your paying on it, i.e. the only card in his deck that would be worth it is fireblast. Or your opponent is casting a major spell and you just happened to havbe left your mana open rather then killing him, way too situational.

Mox Ruby- its a Mountain, except that it gets to drop a turn earlier than most lands. i find its they only acceptble mana acceleration in the deck . last time i checked black lotus was pretty good too. Just my opinion. If your concerned about them welding the lotus for iso scepter then you have a problem cause that means you let them have a welder. Also in Extended magma jet is being tested over volc hammer (or Incinerate in your deck) because of consistency issues. Plus Scepter+Magma Jet = gooseness.

Since the cards are revealed once at a time then you will know when the last card in their deck is a GB. If a process seeking one result is a possibility and the process is repeated infinitly until the order is acheived then it will be achieved. I really need some math genius help here. Example: if you were to roll a D20 only looking for 20 and were going to roll it until that number was rolled you would have a 1 in 20 shot. What you are looking for is like a 1 in 55 shot. If the process is repeated infinite times until the goal were achieved then the process will be done.
However as for saying I'm going to repeat said process until x happens, I don't know the ruling on that.
What you suggest would work, but it's completely irrelevent. The whole point is to win the turn you complete the combo if say, you're staring down an Akroma and SotN. Leaving them with one card in their library (Blessing), defeats the whole point of having the Altar in the first place. If you have an extra turn to play with, mise well just attack with a billion squirrels, amirite?
- Falc yes you are right but the idea behind this is insurance. what if they balance on their turn? its best imo to guarantee the win rather then just swing with all of it at stake.

Falc: Also, Altar doesn't work against Oath because they have Blessing. I have no idea what to take out though. Partially true: With only one blessing in their deck you can make it so that they draw that one on their turn. It's very simple really you just state that your repeating the combo until x happens and at this point your opponenet can draw the GB on his turn. There is a mathematical equation for this as to how many times you need to do it based on probability, but I failed math for calling my teacher an asshole. That and I'm an idiot.

Alright, alright, quit beating on the kid for him having made poor deck decisions. I'm sure everybody has made them. Let's adleast look at possible replacements so that he can cut blue but still have the overall same style.
The Trash (only in FCG) 1 Time Walk- Why this card? You say it helps setting up the combo? For this deck, it's an extra attack step + a draw. So in order for this card to be effective you need to have creature advantage and have your combo ready to go? Seems like a win-more card. If you must play a Walk style card try Final Fortune or Seedtime. 4 Volcanic Island -Wrong- 4x Mountain 1 Ancestral Recall -Drawing more cards is good, but the addition of blue has made this deck more inconsistant in its draws. This card adds speed but takes away from the fundamental thought of this deck, Get out all the goblins and smash-face quickie quickie. For speed try 1x Chrome Mox 1 Time Twister - As suggested earlier Wheel of Fortune 1 Cunning wish -Wrong- If your games are getting to the point where you need to cunning wish for an answer, then you need to practice with FCG. Replace this with a Gempalm Incinerator. 1 Ancient Tomb- Interesting thought- Nope still shit. Play wasteland, wreck their lands.
Board Trash 3 Glimpse of Nature -Nope- Blood Moon, not having it in your board made you lose to TPS. 2 Blue Elemental Blast -WTF?- Null Rod. This card is a must in all FCG sideboards. No questions asked.
4cc IS a tough matchup, and damn near impossible w/o your incinerators, and the same goes for fish. How the hell do you intend to win against decks that pack some disruption and goblin welder? or 4cc? or Fish? or whatever you face in your meta that runs creatures. Hell this deck in its current form would probably get pwned by sui-black.

A friend of mine tested Annul over null rod and found that it destroyed his opponents that were playing workshop or oath. So much so that one of his opponents was convinced that he had preboarded and needed to see the decklist to be proven wrong. Annul gives a better fighting chance against oath. What's null rod supposed to do? Shut down their artifact mana? oh no not that, hold on, whats null rod supposed to do against 5/3 when they cast 2nd turn jugz? or first turn CoW, or 3Sphere. IMO I think that Null rod is outdated and should be played in the board only to be brought in against Slaver.

IMO Rhystic Tutor is underplayed. It can be X4'd and it only costs one more then Demon, It should be played in combo. I think i will test it in belcher as another search card. Plus with the mana curves so tight on most deck, and some of them are aiming at dropping things every turn then why not run it? That and its a bulk rare.

I wasnt saying that your deck was a copy of mine, I was saying that this is a copy of my current deck, i.e. This is what my deck currently looks like. I do a little comparison at the bottom of the post as to how our decks are different. Didnt mean to offend you. I don't know about you but I love the look of my opponent when I drop eggs on first turn.
I will probably end up testing Vedalken Archmage, but it seems so weak to any creature hate, that and it helps to trigger their oath.

Andystok just killed me with coalition victory and marked it down on it. Yeah lets not get into it, but it involves coalition victory sliver queen and dragon.dec
Edit. I have a gush that i turned into a nuke, i just need to find it. As a side note I turned a bunch of the Apocalypse lands into Housing property, i.e. Putting up "for Sale" signs, and putting the prices at the bottom of the text, with the coastline being the highest one at 400k and i think the caves were 25k.

i never joined the boy scouts because when i was a kid my family moved about every other year with my father in the army. however, what benefits other than the neato title come with becoming an eagle scout? do you get a scholarship of any sort (this is my guess)? some other physical reward? or is it just the badge and the feeling behind it? i am just curious because one of my friends is getting ready to do his eagle scout project Thats an excellant question, and here is an answer that relates to you kinda. As an Eagle Scout you automatically get a rank adjustment in the military. Just for joining you start as an E-2 and proceed as normal, i.e. 3 months your an e-3 and another 6 months and your an e-4. same sort of idea. Not to mention that it looks great on a college application, and a Resume'. I wouldn't give up mine for anything.

I did some thinking about the maindeck disruption, i.e. Uktabi Orang and Lyrist. They could easily be replaced by Living Wish. This would allow for a sideboard of tricks. This is just a rough sketch but this is what I have so far:
Mox Monkey Old Man of the Sea Bazaar of Baghdad Stripmine Genesis Sex Monkeys
Quick explanation:
Mox Monkey: Eats jewelry, if you need a greater explanation, it functions as a way to disrupt most artifact decks.
Old Man of the Sea: Have heard, but not tested, that this card is great against opposing welders.
Bazaar of Baghdad: This card will allow you to have another method of getting your artifact men into the yard while also drawing cards, it's a psuedo-thirst.
Stripmine: The oddball of the board really, but it functions as another mana source and offers more defense against dragon.
Genesis: I noticed that this card was originally cut and I understand, but if SotF is countered then your going to want to get your welders back.
Sex Monkeys: When you absolutely must destroy that platinum angel.
The deck seems really tight, and I like the innovation behind it. Man I hope I spelled everything right.
