Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Deck] budget stasis

Well, you already have Forsaken City so add in Jace the Planeswalker and it turns into a quick way to keep stasis going. I had a versions with Jace and Garruck providing the way to make the mana needed and doubled as kills. If you get Garruck out, you practically can play everything without worrying about stasis so much. It's like playing under a Winter Orb.
I also used Root Maze since it's effective against a lot of Vintage type strategies anyway and provides a quick hard lock with Jace and Stasis.

Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Sanctioned Legacy in Traverse City, Michigan

We finally convinced our local store to sanction the events so now it finally is. It's every week on sunday.
If you feel like playing and actually building up some of those DCI points, you have a new spot that doesn't require you to play standard format. The textless cards are always nice if anything.
When: Sunday 1:00p
Where: Fun Factory 1043 South Airport Rd Traverse city, MI 49686 231-946-4064
(right across the street from K-mart and next to J and S hamburger) any local will know that place.
It's a nice place with a good amount of tables and a usual average crowd of 20 or so. We have had weeks where it hits in the 40 range of people, but it's usually around 18 to 20. Proxies are not allowed. Foreign language cards are allowed.
Decks tend to be actually good builds with the occasional scrubbies tossed in. Thresh, Gobbos, TES, and even the off chance of seeing stuff like 43 Land, Faerie Stompy, and Death and taxes are pretty normal to see. Good range of stuff to play against. As close as you will get to a good testing ground aside from making a gauntlet. You will run into tier one decks.
Of course there's still FNM on Friday for the rest.
Hope to see some new faces.
You can ask anyone for me, my name is Chad, they'll know me.

Bridge from Below bbb Enchantment (TS) R
Whenever a non-token creature is put into your graveyard from play, if Bridge from Below is in your graveyard, put a 2/2 black Zombie creature token into play. Whenever a creature is put into an opponent's graveyard from play, if Bridge from Below is in your graveyard, remove Bridge from Below from the game.
Oh, I wonder what this could go in. lol Ichorid will enjoy this one. Want to block with your Welder to get rid of it? Oh if you insist. Nice addition.

Quick question, when exactly is the Gravestorm counted, upon resolution or announcement of the spell?
I'm assuming announcement. So that makes this not so great since you can't go nuts with a Zuran Orb or such in response to bump it up a few copies. This makes it quite hard to get anywhere near the power it needs to be devastating enough on the first few turns to do real amazing damage. It does go well with Petal though.

This will really just end up being one of those cards you keep in the back of your mind for future reference. It's not aggressive and blacks best cards are at this point. It has the use of being a black misdirection, but at this point, that's not something black wants to do. You can just remember it for those games where you really want misdirection, but don't have the blue base to support it.

In all honesty, it makes a decent sideboard card since black has never been fond of the random red decks roaming around at the lower levels of the tournament. Sending bolts flying in the wrong direction isn't too bad. I doubt it's really worth playing though since you can just duress an ancestral anyway and being on the offensive is much better with black so far as it's card pool goes.

To be honest I think we should think about what this card can be used in and easy ways of dealing with it. We will definitely see the card hit play in Vintage so might as well accept it, drop the "omg broken" comments, and get anything you play ready to take a second turn hit from one. It's just like when old fashioned Sligh took the hit from Chalice and virtually became extinct. Along came Goblins to take it's place. No different really. Just adjust for it and everything fine. Sure there will be decks that get hurt so bad they can't keep up anymore, but that happens all the time. I remember Pithing Needle almost singlehandedly taking out Survival Decks out of Legacy. It only changed things a little.
Using the Rav Duals will help (good thing I got a foil of each one) so you aren't completely screwed out of a color on accident. It's not like 2 life is a big deal in Vintage anyway. You can always go painland if you feel you really need to. Decks that use mostly one-ofs will be practically immune anyway so that's good. Aggro plain won't care unless they only run a few copies of critters in the first place. Get resourceful and vary things up a bit, no problem.

What I wonder is why are these people doing this over and over? Is it that easy to get away with it? If so why isn't there a shit ton of people doing it? Obviously, the people paid for it hoping it was legit. So they get the money and then what? The only recourse through Ebay is that shitty settlement thing and Paypal is not better. Can you really fight that? Seems like there should be a ton of people scamming at that point especially if you don't live in the US.

It works better if you right click on the program and play it in win98 compatibility mode. After all Windows XP wasn't around when this game was made. It slows down the map and corrects a few graphical distortions. Directx9 wasn't invented yet so doing that helps.
Hope that helps some.

I know one deck I am thrilled to play it in. GAT.
I run maindeck Duresses anyway, not to mention I have been playing around with Willbender as it was just because Sudden Death/shock was driving me crazy from the random people. I'll play a couple in there just because it's already a single mana and my deck loves anything that's easily castable and gains an advantage.
As for being super format changing, yeah I guess it is in a way. It's more akin to Chalice of the void really in how Chalice made aggro decks stop relying on 1cc cards totally. You'll have to take this thing into account and maybe it will make Willbender an actual Vintage worthy card (wow that's weird). Nothing like getting hit with your own Extirpate.
Though I do hope they make some more static ability type things to defend against Split second though. It's starting to get annoying not being able to counter quite a few cards. I'd kill for a misdirection that can hit Split second stuff. I'd settle for it even if it was similar to Commandeer. Luckily, it's not that popular in Vintage so far.
Look at it this way, at least Aggro might make a comeback with this card. It's been a while since we saw an Aggro deck do well in Vintage. That's one of the few deck types that really won't be affected by it much.

They should really just emphasize white's already in print cards. They decided against things like Blaze of Glory and such for some reason and I think that what hurt them. Make White the master of combat tricks. Make Banding understandable with a few lines of text. That would be an accomplishment all it's own. Reprint a good Blaze of Glory. Give white the best in combat spells. Make lifegain a serious issue if ignored. I think that would be the biggest one. Lifegain is kind of crap. Sure, it can swing a game that's fairly even, but what if white just happened to have cards that could outrace a Legacy sligh deck just in pure lifegain? That would be interesting.

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: 2006 In Movies
|
on: January 02, 2007, 05:26:03 pm
|
Keep in mind my wife is the usual one who picks out movies. I usually just buy whatever I like. I didn't buy much this year.
Annapolis (1/27/06) Crap, almost a chick flick if it had anything to do with love scenes, but it doesn't so it just sucks.
The Ant Bully (7/28/06) If you liked Ants or A Bug's Life, you'll like this, it's along the same lines and pretty decent.
Barnyard: The Original Party Animals (8/4/06) It has it's funny moments, but that's about it.
The Benchwarmers (4/7/06) Has it's funny moments, but that's it.
BloodRayne (1/6/06) This could have been really good, too bad it wasn't and sucked the big one.
Cars (6/9/06) It's yet another Disney movie and a generally decent one, it's good for the kids.
Click (6/23/06) Definitely worth the rental, but I would have been disappointed to pay full movie price. It's pretty good though
The Covenant (9/8/06) I heard this sucked? True?
The Da Vinci Code (5/19/06) I liked it, but I didn't read the book. Worth the rental
The Descent (8/4/06) An interesting horror flick that's more odd than scary. Wait for it to hit the $1 rental section or HBO
Eragon (12/15/06) I read the book, this made me sad. That and wanting to kill the director for butchering such a good book.
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (6/16/06) Another Fast and Furious, if you liked the rest this ones ok too.
Fearless (2006) (Jet Li) (9/22/06) Good flick, though I was hoping for more. Loosely based on the original guy.
Final Destination 3 (2/10/06) I don't know why I watched this. It's like the others and I really didn't like them either. Stupid wife keeps renting them though.
Firewall (2/10/06) Straightforward really, read the box and you have the jist.
Lady in the Water (7/21/06) You can easily tell who wrote the script. It's a really strange movie, but if you follow the story close it's not too bad.
Little Man (7/14/06) Can you tell my wife has bad taste in movies yet? wow this was dumb.
Madea's Family Reunion (2/24/06) I need to stop letting her have money or something.
Mission: Impossible III (5/5/06) I mean seriously, her taste in movies is seriously deranged.
Monster House (7/21/06) Ok, she gets a good one here and there.
My Super Ex-Girlfriend (7/21/06) But usually it's crap like this. though I found this one amusing.
Nacho Libre (6/16/06) Usually though she just brings home stuff I want to use as Kitty litter scoopers.
Nanny McPhee (1/27/06) or maybe I have to sit through a total rip of Mary Poppins.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (7/7/06) And then when I pick a movie it says "to be continued?" wtf?
Poseidon (5/12/06) Guess who rented this one. I'll give you a hint, it sucked.
She's The Man (3/17/06) I feel like I should shoot myself.
Silent Hill (4/21/06) Ok, that was a weird flick.
Superman Returns (6/28/06) I rented this one, but was a little disappointed. I liked the old ones. Well the first two anyway, the rest should have had "warning suckage" labels on the tickets. This one just needed less love crap and more asskicking.
Take the Lead (4/7/06) YES! I fell asleep during this.
Tristan & Isolde (1/13/06) Ok, I'm going out on a limb for this one. It's a love story that's for sure. Did I mention my wife likes chick flicks? Anyway, it's actually damned good. I highly recommend it.
Ultraviolet (3/3/06) Ok, I'm entitled to rent one that sucks occasionally too.
Underworld: Evolution (1/20/06) As a movie, it's a little lackluster, though has it's moments, but man she's hot.
United 93 (4/28/06) A very good movie, well worth it's rental.
V for Vendetta (3/17/06) Probably the best movie I saw all year.
The Wild (4/14/06) Women suck, so does this movie.
X-Men: The Last Stand (5/26/06) My single largest disappointment for the year. It's X-men, how can you bash that? I guess you can, sadly.

Well since I got asked in a few PM's about this and people want to know about getting power easier also, I figured I'd help out.
Ok, find one of these files like this. 0094.dck It should be under the decks folder in the games program folder. Now open it with Notepad. You'll get crap like this.
Fungus Master (G/U, 4th)
.91 11 Forest .126 11 Island .193 4 Prodigal Sorcerer .94 4 Fungusaur .125 3 Ironroot Treefolk .269 2 Wall of Brambles .208 4 Rod of Ruin .305 2 Carnivorous Plant .831 2 Untamed Wilds .285 2 Wild Growth .275 2 Wall of Wood .445 2 Oasis .201 4 Regeneration .260 4 Unsummon
.vNone .191 3 Power Sink .vBlack .191 1 Power Sink .136 2 Kormus Bell .vBlue .191 3 Power Sink .vGreen .147 2 Living Lands .191 1 Power Sink .vRed .191 3 Power Sink .vWhite .191 3 Power Sink
Now using this file you can save it as a different name. That's so you can put this back to default later. I just changed mine to 0094a
In this file replace anything with some of these values.
.165 1 Mox Emerald .166 1 Mox Jet .168 1 Mox Ruby .167 1 Mox Pearl .169 1 Mox Sapphire .230 1 Sol Ring .510 4 Mishra's Workshop .528 4 Strip Mine .17 1 Black Lotus .529 4 Su-Chi .480 3 Candelabra of Tawnos .398 2 Bazaar of Baghdad .162 4 Mind Twist .10 4 Balance .282 2 Wheel of Fortune .1 4 Ancestral Recall .249 4 Time Walk .250 4 Timetwister
now add this to the bottom after hitting enter a couple of times .vNone .vBlack .vBlue .vGreen .vRed .vWhite
The number refers to the number of that particular card he will have. Now when you run into one of those creatures he will only have the cards you entered in. Duel him with some Bronze Tablets and Demonic Attorney's and take everything you can. Keep going after them until you get all you want or they give you cards from their deck. lol
Remember whatever you put in that file is what they are going to have and they will try to play it like a deck. It's pretty funny, but make sure you only add one timetwister or Wheel of Fortune or it will go into a loop recasting it over and over everytime they draw it. You don't want to accidentally deck yourself. Put some stupid crap to fill in the gaps or they will cast mass creatures off moxes faster than anything. Look in other files if you want a particular card or I can give you the number.
Go back into the file and put it back to normal. Play as usual with some new goodies.
You can make your own files like this also or edit the utter crap out of theirs. I remade them so their decks don't suck. They have actual good ones now. It's more fun when they try.
As for the rest,
Too add cards is a lot trickier but too bad as long as it does something similar to one already in the game. This part you need to be a half assed programmer for. Now remember, you can only add them to decks, the game only looks for certain numbers of cards. You will have to change the value to have it look for more cards than what was in the database.
The folder cardart is exactly what it says. There's your borders and such. They are in PICT format so you'll have to convert them if you want to view one, but there's no need. You can pretty much figure out what they are from the names. It sucks trying to find a converter for something like this anyway.
The folder Deulsounds is fun to edit. It's just sounds so you can add whatever you want. They do carry over to all cards that use the sound though.
The rarity, info, and deckbuilder files can be opened and edited in Excell of all things. Those are easy to edit. You can figure those out pretty easy.
The card art unfortunately is in a DLL file so it can't be edited easily. You'll need someone with an editor to add that.
You basically use an existing card to use the mechanics from. For example, Shock is just a toned down Lightning bolt. Take away 1 damage in the file for it. Simple enough if you can get into the DLL's. You can see why Affinity is becoming a hassle, there's nothing remotely similar. Most cards deal with something already done, just in a different fashion or different numbers. The 6th edition rules is the worst part. They don't quite work right especially with that damage prevention phase we used to have a long time ago. You can edit the interupts as instants pretty easy though.
I'm not a programmer by the way, but I can lead you in the right direction of some people that can help if you want to mess with it.

I'll have to post it as soon as the bugs are worked out but me and some friends added some cards to the game. I have all of Fallen Empires, The Dark, some of Ice Age, and the missing cards from the previous sets working now. I am working on Affinity since a friend wanted me to make it into the game, but that particular ability is hard to convert since there's nothing similar to it already. Cards that already are similar to one in the game are simple to add. I want to get rid of the interrupts also and add 6th editions stack into it. That's a lot of work by itself, but the game is too much fun to let die.

Here's a less known fact. GAT started as an enchantress deck with 4 Yawg Wills. The original was based on a goofy idea of putting wild growths and fertile grounds on islands then casting high tides and turnabouts with a stroke win. The enchantments were to draw enough cards to set up the combo originally.
Planeshift came out later and changed the premise. I playtested the crap out of it with Chapin before it evolved to it's current form. We argured forever over the name since it was pretty decent even then. He wanted to call it the Masterbator. True Chapin style no less. He said "I just play with myself for 10 minutes then stroke off in your face, it's a great name!" My name was Enchantress. Ok, so it was a lame name. At least it didn't end up being named the Masterbator.

I have an odd situation. I live in Traverse city. It seems to be the Vintage and Legacy capitol for some odd reason. We have regular tounaments every weekend with damned good turnouts especially for the Legacy. Type 2 (standard) and Extended have been tried time and time again and just die horrid deaths. No one wants to play them.
Now, if I drive just 20 minutes south to Houghton Lake or even further to Lansing or Detroit it's all Type 2 and no one could care less about older stuff. You can get duals with not much problem. I traded for some Bayous at the equivilant of $5 apeice for them once down there. Tells you something.
I drive a lot with my job so I stop in to the shops and do a lot of trading whether it be the shops or the people playing. I trade type 2 rares to the southerners for good older cards and trade them back to the northerners for good type 2 rares which I will just go back down and make trades yet again for type 1 stuff. Lather, Rinse, Repeat.
I am usually doing damned good trades to these people in their favor because it doesn't really make a difference to me since I come out ahead on accident. They are happy in both places and I am happy since I get to keep a couple cards here and there.
I get treated by the stores pretty well now also. I bother to tell them about trends coming up (new sets hot rares or new decks making old cards popular) so they give me good deals too. I figure if everyone gets what they want it's fair.
Oh yeah, I agree with Clown, Dan Bock is pretty cool. Also Jody Deaton in Detroit is a damned good dealer too. I once saw him tell a kid (maybe 13 years old) exactly what his beta stuff was worth despite the fact he could have took him for a fortune since the kid had ancestrals in the mix.

I'll give this a shot over the weekend with all the players who come out for the tournaments and let you know if we find a problem. Sounds fun so far.
Making it constructed would just net you a reason to start banning cards. I like the idea of keeping it totally random. I was thinking of borrowing one of the stores common boxes (he separates them by set) and playing from it randomly. Just reach in and grab something. We could trade off what set we use each time.

We play Rainbow Stairwell in Traverse city on a regular basis among the better players. It's like the type 1 on the side from the type 1 tournaments. Amazingly fun format. I didn't know it had reached further than our town though. wow.
We found some of the best cards you can use are very underrated compared to normal constructed. Genesis, Citanul Flute, allied strategies, Sunburst creatures, clearwater goblet, and all of the Volver creatures.
Mindblaze is just tech.
Anyway, I played a deck that everyone had ended up boarding a ton of cards to fight because in our testing no one really found a good way to fight it. Because of this deck we ended up banning a couple of cards for next time because they have too much power for the format oddly enough.
Humility because no one likes playing against it anyway. Forbid turned into a powerhouse.
There's nothing quite like the satisfaction of winning with the Door.
Here it is.
Black 1 Seal of Doom 2 Fevered Convulsions 3 Dark Banishing 4 The Abyss 5 Thrashing Wumpass 6 caustic tar
Blue 1 Mystical tutor 2 counterspell 3 Forbid 4 Rewind 5 Force of Will 6 opportunity
White 1 enlightened tutor 2 Seal of cleasing 3 Words of Wisdom 4 Humility 5 rout 6 final judgment
Green 1 Drop of Honey 2 Sylvan Library 3 kodamas reach 4 explosive growth 5 rude awakening 6 desert twister
Red 1 bolt 2 Orcish settlers 3 hammer of bogarden 4 desolation giant 5 Shower of Coals 6 Wildfire
Artifacts 1 phyrexian furnace 2 journymans kite 3 skull of orm 4 jaymeade tome 5 door to nothingness 6 planar portal
The lands were the fetches and painlands.
The trick with it is abusing skull of Orm of all things to recycle the enchantments. Usually no one had much more than one seal of cleansing and maybe a dismantling blow to take care of enchantments. Words of wisdom and sylvan libray go make you go nuts also.

I think I would have to add sacrifice and Drain life because doing that to a Polar Kraken is just amusing.
Ok, on a half serious note, You could always add Temporal aperature just for a lil bit of an engine, plus you can always get lucky and hit one of the fatties. Not so good with the counters though.
