1  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: Human Ingenuity on: November 11, 2013, 09:17:52 am
I like the maindeck of this build a lot, it is very similar to what i am testing since a while (i was never sold on the idea of human, i still think GW is more conistant). It is very solid, only issue i can see it that you might flood often with this with no benefit (no KotR, only one Conopy).

I would pack 2 caverns in any case, and play 3 cage in the maindeck lowering by one the number of Talia, Qasali and Porcelain.

The side i would do it entirely different (i woudl have 3 slots more as the cage would be maindeck already).

But all in all the Leggionaire imho at the moment are the best offensive threat in GW)
2  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: GWB Beats, the best beatdown right now on: August 24, 2013, 03:57:51 am
I'm surprised this thread, and the GWB Beats archetype, hasn't received more attention lately. Especially since GWB has got a few nice tools "lately": Deathrite Shaman and Abrupt Decay. Both has seen some play and to succes as well in BUG but they fit really well into GWB as well.

First, Deathrite Shaman is exactly GWB has missed: A mana producer. Noble Fish has always had Noble Hierarch and it has been used in GWB builds as well, but it has, in my opinion, never been optimal and instead stuff like Elvish Spirit Guide has been tried out. Deathrite Shaman is way better than Hierarch. It almost always helps you set up a strong T2 play as well as Hierarch (and from time to time even better because of its ability to produce B), and it has additional usability as a maindeck graveyard hoser. It deals unblockable damage and gains life which shouldn't be underestimated against other creature based decks.

Next, Abrupt Decay offers the deck some versatility being able to hit some of the most common creatures alongside the most common win condition and a lot of other annoying stuff. It has the added benefit of being able to take out a Chalice @ 2. It can definitely replace the sometimes too narrow Nature's Claim main deck.

I think that GWB is incredible strong and very underplayed at the moment. It has a lot of different ways of going and stuff to try out. For instance, does Thoughtseize and/or Mental Misstep have a place main deck? What about Liliana? What finisher, if any, should you play? Tarmogoyf, Scavenging Ooze or, my favorite, Knight of the Reliquary?

I'm not gonna post a list right now because I have a few different builds lying around, but I'm just wondering: Am I the only one playing GWB?

In fact i was tinkering around with that and despite i played little vingate lately with the summer and the many modern i have played something like this in my last tournament http://www.thecouncil.es/tcdecks/deck.php?id=11410&iddeck=83372 .
Btw ia m playing again a Vintage tournament tomorrow and will probably bring something very similar to the one i used last time.

The 20 years anniversary is approaching, and still no news on how will WotC bring Vintage to MTGO (a they announced at the beginning of the year).
Have we lost any hope ?
5  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: Human Ingenuity on: May 28, 2013, 05:00:33 am
A good idea would be to run grafdigger's cage maindeck.
Also Thornscape Apprentice, a human wizard, can give us some tempo relief to draw that StP equired to deal with BSC.

Fiend Hunter in my view is slow and suffer from the same problem suffered by Leonin Relic-Warden.If you do not have a target those cards sit in your hands for too many turns and a tempo deck cannot afford to waste time.

One alternative could be running stuff such as Metamorph ourselves (more of an hypoerbole but we could also play Mangara or Preacher).

To be honest Tinker is often a problem not as big as a turn 1 Oath (forbidden, mox, oath, go)turning dragon breath + emrakul or BSC on turn two.

In both cases (tinker or Oath) playning a cage in turn 1 seems to be the best proactive protection we could play.

9  Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: [Free Podcast] So Many Insane Plays # 24: Dragon's Maze Set Review on: May 02, 2013, 10:27:15 am
This is nonsense, it is not format defining at all, it is format polluting. This is the exact attitude I don't understand. We really need to get rid of these stereotyping, I mean come on now, brutality is what makes vintage vintage? I have a personal disgust for the statement 'Go play Legacy'. Don't ever use it again when responding to me.

Vintage without Tinker or Trinisphere will not make it less Vintage, it would make it more meaningful.

I think we agree to disagree here. I did not mean to say "go play legacy" sorry. I wanted to say that vintage without the crazy overpowered restricted cards "IS" legacy, whatever you like it or not, it is a matter of fact. Take a Deck like Stoneblade, remove LoA, Ancestral, Time Walk, Mox & Lotus, Mystical Tutor, now add back in Brainstorm 2,3 & 4 and the Vintage version of the deck looks a lot like the Legacy version of the same.

The power level of vintage is defined by broken plays.
10  Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: [Free Podcast] So Many Insane Plays # 24: Dragon's Maze Set Review on: May 02, 2013, 07:32:31 am
Guli, you are going overboard, Cards like Tinker, Trini, Balance, and the rest of the insane bombs are format defining stuff. Without them you can just play legacy. Vintage is brutal, and you should always be prepared for the worse. There are no excuses.

LoA could be unrestricted, becasue fondamentally it is true that give you a massive card advantage, but it is a tempo loss and played in 4x destabilize the manabase that a typical LoA deck needs. Workshop has more rationale to be limited than LoA.

But i do think that currently in the restricted list there are cards with much less reason for staying restricted when compared to LoA,  Ponder & windfall for example.

15  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: Humans: A Weapon Invaders Can't Comprehend. . . on: January 23, 2013, 11:02:02 am
Storm whatever you like it or not. It is simply the same archetype.
Just like Kuldhota, Stax, etc. etc. are all Workshop Deck archetypes this is a GWxx deck archetype. Different deck, same archetype.
16  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: Humans: A Weapon Invaders Can't Comprehend. . . on: January 21, 2013, 03:27:56 am
Storm is right in saying Moxes> ESG. For the simple reason he runs BoB in this deck and exposing himself to reveal an ESG is too poor compared to the mana fixing ability and zer damage you get from Moxes.

A lot of the people that criticize GWxx variants, do that because they have never played one. In reality it is a very strong archetype (if you need datas to prove it from Real Life tournaments, just ask i would be happy to provide them).

Last year i missed the Vintage Top8 because of rating and finished 9th ! this year will be very hard to repeat last year's result, but i am 100% sure i will be there to try! i just need some time to find out which hotel would be best to stay given the new location. Any suggestion Hemgath ?

Best tournament in the world probably.
18  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: MTGO for Vintage Feedback on: January 07, 2013, 10:15:10 am
Out of curiosity, for those quoting low numbers, is there any justification for why (or even feasible long term market mechanism by which) a top vintage deck online should/could cost less to outright buy than a top standard deck online (between 400-600)?

Apologies, when i said it should be around $300 i really meant: the set of P9 + Library of Alexandria should be all together $300. Not an entire deck.
19  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: MTGO for Vintage Feedback on: January 07, 2013, 02:52:10 am
I might be spending up to a maximum of $300. If the entry fee is more i keep on playing Pauper on line and Vintage in real as i do today with no additional expense ...
20  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Sound Off: How many of you will be playing Vintage online? on: December 21, 2012, 04:00:07 am
I assume that if WotC launches Vintage online they will also be providing support to the format. In the shape or form of Premier Event, sanctionned tournaments, etc.

If this comes true it would mean that vintage would get, for the first time ever in the last 15 years, the support it did not have form WotC. It might look irrelevant, but in reality it is a game-changing move. More people would be attracted if they make the cards available at reasonable prices. You do not hav eto own a full kernel to play vintage, it did not use to be like that. If like me you were playing Magic in 1994 you know what i mean.

If the cards will be available (and given we are talking of online cards, they can make them as available as they want) it would probably be possible to enter the fomat with a relatively small investment comparable to the investment you need to make to play Constructed on MTGO.

The interactions i see with the paper game are enormous, already the paper P9 prices are surging in anticipation. Big dealers are buying, starcity is buying P9 at prices higher than ever. There will be more people playing, and unavoidably, more decks will see playing, more cards and synergies will be exploited.

How can anyone - who plays vintage - not like the idea of Vintage getting some breath of new fresh air ?
21  Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: [Premium Article] So Many Insane Plays: The Return of Burning Long! on: December 17, 2012, 05:17:27 am
Steven - i promised i would have said it when this archetype woudl have made results in this side of the world and yesterday your deck (i think very a very close build if not the same) has won the tournament in Milan yesterday (26 people).
TO Report is in italian, but the lists of the top8 (amazing variaty btw) are in english - http://www.tipo1.it/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30244 (soon lists would be on tcdecks too) .

Last Thursday i was playtesting vs the guy that actually won yesterday. I was playing kuldotha and i was impressed how well this deck can deal with MUD if played properly.

And seems real fun to play too!
22  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Sound Off: How many of you will be playing Vintage online? on: December 17, 2012, 04:44:22 am
I would play it. I am on MTGO just for Pauper and the occasional limited, but if Vintage was available and accessible (i.e. would not require me spending thousands of Dollars to play it) i would defintely play it.

I do not like Legacy nor Modern. I think that MTGO Vintage would be the only way to revitalize a bit the paper Vintage world attracing maybe some players if the format would get some type of sponsorship from WotC.
23  Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: [Premium Article] So Many Insane Plays: The Return of Burning Long! on: November 20, 2012, 04:16:27 am
Unfortunately, and this is sad to say it, but Vintage is pretty much dead or dying in almost every region from what I've been seeing.  There has literally been one 11 person tournament within 3 hours of me in the last two months. Has there been a tournament of more than 30 players in the United States in the last two months?  More than one in the world?   If I had tournaments nearby, I know I'd be playing this every weekend.

Just in Italy:

Oct. 7th: Acqualanga 44 ppl
Oct. 14th: Milan 24 ppl
Oct. 21st: Florence 40 ppl
Nov. 4th: Milan 23 ppl (was a long bank holidays week end so many people were away)
Nov. 18th: Florence 25 ppl
Nov. 18th Acqualagna: 42 ppl

Next week end (Nov. 25th) we have both Milan and Florence and expecte respectively (30ish and 40ish people respectively)

I will chek the amount of Burning Wish decks in T8, if any.
EDIT: Checked, no Burning Wish deck in top8 of any of the above (but we had one Grow & and Cobra Gush Storm deck)

Any news on the Vintage Decklists by the way?

Peach, soon, so far we have all Modern, Legacy and the top 3 of Vintage ready - Stinfo should get us the last 5 as soon as he manages ...

Edit: my congratulations to Jaime, i have lost against him the 4th turn for 1-2. I could see him doing well at the tournament in fact I went back few minutes later to ask some questions about his deck! He deserved the victory coming with a very original deck and playing it flawlessly!

Actually the tutor is there to get you out of trouble, for example your opponent has two golem and a forgemaster down and you can only be saved by a kataki, or you have just been Shown & Told an Emrakul and you die if you find your Karakas, or you have a Wurmcoil looking at you and only a Swords to Plowshares can get you out of the troubles ....

I still have mixed feeling about Demonic Consultation. Smmenen always says it is the perfect tutor for this deck (and i agree with this, because the other tutors are unplayable here, Demonic is too slow and mana intensive, Vampiric gives a cards disadvantage from which is hard to recover), but the question in my mind is : Does this deck really needs a tutor ? Wouldn't a Sylvan Library be more versatile ? Less powerfull and less dangerous for sure, but more flexible  ... i have tested both options and i cannot find an answer.

I have done that -1Gaddock and +1Thalia fundamentally because she is a dead man (woman) walking and i want her always on the board - i have never been in the situation where i had too many thalia in hand. She is my ghost Quarter, but better because i do not lose a land and the sphere effect is good against everything including dredge and MUD (obviously use with care vs shops).  Additionally it is easier to cast her with 1W compared to GW of Gaddock.

Under normal circumstances Gaddock is still God vs FoW, Gush and Jace. But caverns naming human/wizard get rid of the FoW issue, Gush decks are not seeing much play over here (italy) so Jace remains the only issue and it is really an issue only in Keeper or if played in the early game.
