1  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Discussion] Isn't it obvious? on: February 15, 2005, 12:38:47 pm
I truly believe that something has to be done.Countrol Slaver is a Top Deck since it came out and now people tweaked it and it turned out the most powerfull Deck in the format since it can just outdraw most of the other Decks.

In my opinion Thirst of Knowlege just has to be restriced. Not that Control Slaver is too broken but TfK makes all the difference. It is the reason why Contro Slaver is soo much better than all the other Control Decks in the format(i.E:Tog,4CC).
Also TfK seems much more powerfull to me than FoF was espacially in Decks like Control Slaver.I renember when people complained about turn 4 FoF but turn 2 or 3 TfK seems to be a stronger Play if you ask me.
2  Eternal Formats / Creative / MonoR Goblins on: January 29, 2005, 04:11:31 am
If you donīt want to invest money in Taigas or if you donīt want to learn how to play FCG I would recommend you to run Goblins with the Goblin Recruiter/Goblin Charbelcher combo. It is about the same power level as FCG, eventually it is slower a whole turn but it also has some advantages over FCG.First of all have a better Mana Base so you can support to run 3 Ancient Tombs along with a full set of Striplands. Also Goblin Charbelcher on its own is much more usefull then Food Chain on its own.Last but not least you have Seething Song, which may seem clunky but in fact it is a    accelerates your deck much more then Elvish Spirit Guide.

But if you wanīt to stick with Goblin Sligh and if I take a look at your metagame then Pyrostatic Pillar is almost a non brainer. As for the 8 Blast SB-Plan I like it.Chill seems to be a real problem for your deck when it comes turn 2 or 3 and Fish also has some other usefull cards against you(Fire/Ice,Mancer,MisD,Stifle..).You could always board out your Fireblasts and some other Spells to add the 8 Blasts in game 2.It should also be usefull against Tog.
As for Goblin Vandal, I never tested it actually but when I played my Goblin Recuiter/Belcher Deck I found out that Pulverize was absolutly nuts against MWS-Prison Decks however I canīt see any Prison Decks in your Meta but the TnT Deck always has some blockers left for your creatures, yes you can shoot them down but I prefer to destroy all their Moxen,Jugger,Trini instead of just getting rid of a mox or so.

Sorry for my bad english.
3  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Rector-Tendrils ....Better or weaker than TPS ? on: January 09, 2005, 06:44:43 am
After readong the TPS and the Rector-Trix thread I wanted to try out a Rector deck with Tendrils as its win condition.

After a month of testing I came up with this build:

Rector-Tendrils aka Rectal Agony aka Pain in the ASS.dec

Lands
    2 Scrubland
    3 Underground Sea
    1 Tolarian Academy
    4 Gemstone Mine
    1 Polluted Delta
    4 Flooded Strand

// Creatures
    4 Academy Rector

// Spells
    2 Tendrils of Agony
    1 Lotus Petal
    1 Mana Vault
    1 Memory Jar
    1 Tinker
    1 Balance
    1 Mystical Tutor
    4 Brainstorm
    1 Mox Jet
    1 Yawgmoth's Will
    1 Mox Pearl
    1 Mox Ruby
    1 Mox Sapphire
    1 Mox Emerald
    1 Black Lotus
    1 Ancestral Recall
    1 Time Walk
    1 Mana Crypt
    1 Timetwister
    1 Yawgmoth's Bargain
    1 Necropotence
    4 Dark Ritual
    4 Cabal Therapy
    1 Sol Ring
    1 Vampiric Tutor
    1 Demonic Tutor
    4 Force of Will
    1 Mind's Desire

SB:
 1 Darksteel Colossus
 1 Form of the Dragon
 2 Tormodīs Crypt
 2 Seal of Cleansing
 4 Hurkyl's Recall
 4 Phyrexian Negator
 1 Chain of Vapour

Card Analyses:

Gemstone Mine:I am sure we will debate about this but it is the reason why I never have any problems finding the white mana source I need or the multiple black to cast bargain or necropotence. On the other hand its wasteable..

2 Tendrils of Agony:I run 2 because I felt that this is the more secure way.Fish and Landstill are still around with their Stifles and I also find myself into casting double tendrils to make lethal damage with a few moxen and with the addition of Minds Desire I felt that I could not run less than 2.

Lotus Petal:Since my main winning card has 4 CC and I think that this Deck should a bit more mana Accelaration than other Combo Decks.

Balance:Since I am not running Illusions/Donate I had plenty of room so I added this to the Deck.I donīt think theres too much to say about this card, sometimes it is amazing sometimes its dead.

Tinker,Memory Jar,Timetwister,Mindīs Desire:All these Cards allow me to go off even if I donīt get any Rectorīs,Necroīs,Yaw.Willīs or Bargains. And Tinker if they board out their removal you can try to get DSC.

Force of Will:I canīt choose between Duress or this.FoW seems superior and the interaction with Bargain is sweet but Duress also has interaction with Therapy and 14 Blue Spells seem a bit too low to support FoW however most of the time you are able to pitch a brainstorm.

Machtups:This Deck has similiar Machtups to TPS and I think that it is even better against Control but slightly weaker against WS.The Combo Machtups are either quite even or slightly in your favor.

Why to run this Deck > TPS?
This Deck has a high number of Bombs(Rector is a bomb imho) and it can combo out much easier than TPS(the only thing you need is to resolve a rector and sac him to therapy).Someone mentioned that it dies to graveyard hate but It does not.It can also go the Draw 7 route and win with Timetwister;Memory Jar and/or with Will.Therapy seems to be better than Duress combined with Rector and Spirit Tokens.Well their are also reason to run TPS over this(the first thing that comes in my mind is the mana base).

Why to run this > Rector-Trix?
Rector Trix does the same thing like Rector Tendrils,it tries to get Bargain ASAP most of the time, but it its combo is much more distruptable then Tendrils. While Oath has recently popped up Enchantment Hate is getting more and more popular.Trix has also problems to win without Bargain. But it also has some advantages over Rector-Tendrils:It is more resilent to Hate Cards like Pyrostatic Pillar(Null Rod isnīt a that big problem I would say and Chalice for 0 is also not a that big issue for Rector-Tendrils) and it has more blue cards to support FoW more effectively(this makes it more vulnerable to Red Elemental blast)

There are some Questions I have about this deck:

Do you think that this could work out in today meta?
Do you think we should make the mana base more like TPS?
Do you think we should run duress instead of FoW?
Do you think we should make room for a Cunning Wish and fill the Sb with goodies so this could be more resilent to hate cards?
Do you think that Hurkyl's Recall is the best choice for this Deck against MWS?

Thank you for reading and apologize my bad English.
4  Eternal Formats / Creative / Card Discussion: Trash for Treasure on: December 26, 2004, 03:09:08 pm
Quote from: Jacob Orlove
Between Anger and Survival, Welder is pretty much strictly superior to Trash For Treasure in every way possible. So, since you don't actually need the ability of Trash, you have to compare it to other cards you could run, like disruption.

I wonīt argue that Thrash for Treasure is better than Welder but since in a format were almost every Deck has a way to kill Welder Trash for Treasure could be a secondary way to get an artifact after a Thirst of Knowledge.I can imagine that the Control Slaver variants that splash Black could add Entomb in the Maindeck to support Trash for Treasure. The list from Smmenen that I recently saw on SCG used a single copy of Crucible as well as a Strip Mine.So entomb might not be a that odd choice.TfT(heh) would also interact with Intuition.

I am not claiming that it should deserve a MD slot in Control Slaver/Goth Slaver I am sure that it definatly should be tested.

On TnT:Since this Deck can win without Welder Trash for Treasures seems unnecessary to me.Instead of Trash for Treasures it used Survival which is a better choice since it can guarantuee you a long term pressure on your oppenent while the single creature you get with TfT can easiely be Sworded.

SSAOT (And the only anti-Oath tech a deck like this should ever need to run, if at all): Reverent Silence.

I donīt like the idea of Reverent Silence because if you let your opponent gain 6 live he will probably live about 1-2 turns longer so he will have more to set up his combo.[/quote]
6  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Optimizing TPS on: December 22, 2004, 03:54:04 pm
Personally I donīt like Rebuild and 1 Hurkyl's Recall because you donīt need them for your stormcount and you Cunning Wish does  the same job against WS.TPS wants to be the Control against other Combo decks so the option to cunning wish for stifle or BEB would fit into that theme. You can also cast a tricky meditate against a smokestack or Tangle Wire.

Also with that many Bombs Gifts of Ungiven would be really good.During my testing when I resolved Gifts it was like:"Next Turn I will win because I get 2 Bombs I have FoW and Duress so I will resolve at least 1 of the bombs and win".

And finally Skeltal Scrying seems to be a lot more powerfull than Deep Analyses because DA just says "drain me".Even if you flashback it you already spent 6 Mana on it so you probably wonīt win that turn and next turn your oppenent will try to get a Huge Card Advantage with all the Mana he has from the drained DA.
7  Eternal Formats / Creative / Locked.dec, Why need Welders? on: December 21, 2004, 03:46:59 pm
*The main problem of Mono Brown Decks are that they all loose to Mana Dran.If they cast something really explosive on turn 1(3Sphere,Worker)then on turn 2 something important is going to be drained and in your oppenents turn he will cast cast Cunning Wish and then RnR/ArtMut you or he will cast his Intuition followed by Oath/Ak or he will simply just slave you.At this moment your oppenent should win the game, if nothing goes wrong.

*I suggest Rishadan Port as an answer to Mana Drain. Also he has a great Synergy with Crucible and under Tangle Wire its even better.

*You have a lot of Mana Ressources, you could fit some Sundering Titans in the List, they are sooo good(and they wonīt kill a single land of yours).

*Donīt run 4 Grafted Skullcaps.3 Seems to be a good number because you donīt wanna draw dead cards and if you donīt have a Worker out Grafted wonīt be that good anyway(allthough he would be really good with Welder)

*UBA Mask simply doesnīt house control. At the casting cost of 4 it can be countered with ease and even if you resolve it a good control deck will play around it(in other words it will just kill you without actually caring about your card advantage)

*Caltrops doesīt do anything against Oath.A good Oath Player will tap his Orchard eot.

*Mindstorm Crown is too situational, but actually I have not tested it yet so maybe it might be quite good with Skullcap and Worker.

*Against Oath the best Card, that would fit into your deck, would be Duplicant or Claws of Gix.

*I am not sure but in the "MWS-Prison" Mirror I would rather cast Worker instead of a lock piece. At least that was the Experience I had with MUD Mirrors.

I hope I could help you and I apologize for my bad english  Very Happy
