I had a great time at the tournament this Sunday. These semi-casual (in climate, not in quality of players) are what made early 2000s Vintage so much fun. Maybe in another year or two I'll learn all the rules changes again and play in another tournament!
Many thanks to the Tournament Organizer as well as to the store which hosted us.
Worldgorger Dragon (slightly modified list of Demonic Attorney's "Minus 6") led me undefeated in the Swiss and up to 3rd* place, taking my loss to Mr. Kowal.
* Well we didn't actually play out the 3/4 match, but I beat Sam Best during normal rounds so am claiming it!
*Ahem* This post is brought to you by wicketsnatcher ... who has apparently been tricked into taking on an angelic persona!

Well here's my list that scored a 5th - 8th slot.
I will be the first to admit it was shamelessly taken from others. Or rather the basic list was taking from the two highest finished at the SCG event that Brassman won and I made them have sex with each other to spit out this. I hate sideboards, so I didn't care that I put a Tundra in it. My one regret though is having NOTHING against Dragon. That scared me.
4 Force of Will 4 Mana Drain
4 Brainstorm 4 Thirst for Knowledge 2 Gifts Ungiven 1 Ancestral Recall 1 Fact or Fiction
2 Gorilla Shaman 1 Darksteel Collosus
1 Demonic Tutor 1 Burning Wish 1 Mystical Tutor 1 Merchant Scroll 1 Tinker
1 Yawgmoth's Will 1 Recoup 1 Mana Severance 1 Time Walk
2 Pithing Needle 1 Goblin Charbelcher 1 Sensei's Divining Top
1 Black Lotus 1 Sol Ring 5 Moxes 1 Mana Crypt 1 Mana Vault 2 Flooded Strand 2 Polluted Delta 3 Volcanic Island 2 Underground Sea 4 Island (I forgot about the Snow Covered's interaction with Gifts. Or rather I didn't realize it, because I had never played with Gifts before) 1 Library of Alexandria 1 Tolarian Academy
SB: 1 Eye of Nowhere SB: 2 Pyroclasm SB: 1 Deep Analysis SB: 1 Echoing Ruin SB: 1 Rack and Ruin SB: 2 Annul SB: 2 Red Elemental Blast SB: 2 Pyroblast SB: 1 Tundra SB: 2 Sacred Ground

I must say, any sort of enthusiasm and smilin' on my part for our T16 match was completely misread.
I was actually absolutely terrified of the matchup! I thought I was totally done for. It was a consequence of having practically zero playtesting with my deck - I had never faced any sort of aggressive creature deck. I was just in generally high spirits to have made the top anyway.
Game 1 was all about Dave laying serious pressure on me, and I could do nothing but pull back and desperately seach for some way to pull out. He was right that the victory came out of sheer luck in drawing up the Mana Crypt which was able to give me just enough mana to nab the kill.
Many props to the River Boas and Kird Apes - both of which give the big ol' middle finger to my fallback answer of Pyroclasm. Coulda' killed them if they were joblins.
Cheers.

I really never thought about breaking this format. I guess you are right though. I just thought of it as a way to get back to our roots. When black vise and juzam were staples and you didnt leave the house with out a braingeyser and a recall.
it's too bad they are abusing balance like this. "Unfortunately" was the exact right word. oh well though. when in rome....
And you, chewy, get a medal. You have have truly struck the heart of the matter. This format has been being played around our local CT haunt for a good amount of time now. Actually it began as "Legends and Back" and after a half a year or so of playing it, we added in The Dark. A friend of mine wanted to play magic with a friend of his. Unfortunately this friend of his hadn't played since, like, 4th edition time. The solution? Make decks using only cards he would be sure to know and understand. Since that time, I have around ten decks for this made - all a blast to play and none very competitive. The fact that "competitive" and "Balance is too broken" has eeked its head into this format is a shame. Granted, of course that was going to happen when announced as a side event for Waterbury. However, I absolutely love it in the way that it was intended. It produces the best casual games ever. Over the past month I've gotten to play with Phantasmal Terrain, Ley Druid, Paladia Mors, El-Hajiajj, Scarwood Bandits, Divine Transformation, and Unholy Strength (just to name a few). It was designed for us old time players to grin as we tapped mana for bad creatures and inefficient spells just because they made us smile. There's an incredibly rewarding feeling when you sit down with a bunch of guys to play a game and it's lighthearted and fun as people send bad creatures in to attack, and play bad spells just because they have cool artwork or bring back a certain memory. There's an added joy when people who just don't understand can't comprehend why a Bird Maiden is in your deck.

This is a really old thread... but totally unanswered. I hope Bean gets it.
The Portal issue was always a quandary, but with October (I think) rolling around, Portal gets introduced to T1. So cheers for all of us - Portal's legal!
Generally, the rules are as per T1 (banned and restricted). Any proxies (which there really shouldn't be in the first place) should be absolutely sure to have the full card printout and artwork since, well, it's all about the art. Everything but your basic lands need to have artwork by the same artist.
That's it really. You win for nonbasics if you choose, like, Rob Alexander and get a bunch of dual lands. Heh.

You know, the hardest thing right now is chosing the order of these three.
1- tom simmons - 7.gif
2- squattingdog55 - sunflowerofpride.jpg
3- kappa21 - 1st.jpg
Tom's has a wonderful shape pretty unique among the standard fractal. Squattingdog55 used color wonderfully in an elegant design. Kappa21's was simple and stylish and appealed to me.
I have to say, whichever student is "mr r" should get a swift kick to the balls or something because his work is just complete and utter garbage. I'd imagine that any misery and pain sent his way has been deserved for a looooong time.

Man, it's been a while since I've been in the TCB scene. I'm so happy to have gotten Raze banned. Let's see if my magic works as it's done before and I'll just come out of no where and win the whole thing.
Now alls I need to do is think of a deck.

Sam's in Meriden is most of Team Ct's offical hang out. Although as of late we've seem to be a bit lax in our tournament level Type 1 focus. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! That somehow implys that we ever have a strong tournament level T1 focus. Right now my focus is on T1, but with my pirate-style 15 Drudge Skeletons. -J:tD (And Large Charles - Sam's is also a primarily T2 store. Sure I'm there sometimes to make it worth going to sometimes, but that's not the point.)
