1  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: A Perspective on the Health of Vintage: Why do You NOT Attend Tournaments? on: January 20, 2009, 03:11:38 pm
Well, since it has been awhile since I posted anything, I at least can start giving some reason why I haven't been around in the past few years.  Its been up between financial issues (i had a 2nd job for awhile while the wife was between jobs), trying to get the house set for foster parenting & generally spending half, if not more, of my weekends volunteerring.  I've noticed as I've been getting older, I have to really really plan my time in advance (usually more than a month).

I was already planning on either sealed or a superbowl party feb 1st.  So, now that there is something at the Circle B, I think I might just do that instead... and hopefully bring a friend or two I've been drafting with.

Well, at least I top 2'd and 4'd at gen con.

EE Consultant: Low/Medium Voltage Power Systems Analysis / Protection & the IT Manager (small businesses are the awesome)

Since business in through the roof and I'm working random weekends, I haven't been able to get around to play... sooner or later I'll be back.

If you like Ska/Punk here are a few:

Choking Victim/Leftover Crack
River City Rebels
MU330
One Fan Band
Impossibles
Suicide Machines

or you could just do what I do since I can't stand the commercial radio around here and find yourself a live365.com station that suits your fancy.  I have Ska Punk and Other Junk playing on the headphones at work most days.

5  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Single Card Discussion] Leyline of the Void on: January 18, 2006, 10:38:34 am
For reference now that we know how it is worded from the FAQ:

Leyline of the Void
{2}{B}{B}
Enchantment
If Leyline of the Void is in your opening hand, you may begin the game
with it in play.
If a card would be put into an opponent's graveyard, remove it from the
game instead.

* Leyline of the Void affects cards that would be put into opponents'
graveyards from anywhere, not just from play.

* Leyline of the Void's effect prevents the cards from ever reaching
your opponents' graveyards, so abilities such as haunt never trigger.

* Your "opening hand" is the hand of cards you decide to start the game
with after taking any mulligans.

* After all players have decided not to take any more mulligans, players
choose Leylines to put into play, starting with the player who will be
going first and proceeding in turn order. Each player may choose any
number of Leylines. The cards are revealed and put into play at the same
time.

* Leylines that start the game in play aren't played as spells. They
can't be countered. After each player has exercised his or her option to
put Leylines into play, the first turn of the game begins.

* The player who will be going first chooses the relative timestamp
order of all Leylines that start the game in play.

7  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Best Community of People EVAR on: September 01, 2005, 03:33:54 pm
That was a very beautiful story.  Time and time again it amazes me how upstanding the T1 community is.

I just wanted to share my "lost deck" story from Gen con 2k4.  It was the late Friday night for the T1 that started at 10pm where crappiness fell down upon myself.  10pm the tourney was supposed to start.  So, I'm all ready deck registerred, backpack put in locker and happy to be able play. It wasn't a good week so far for me.  I brought fully poweredTog with me and I think I've only won one match so far that week.  I couldn't care less; I get to play with the cards I've been collecting for 6+ years. So i sit, wait and talk a bunch with the GWS crew as we are waiting for it all to start.  6 or so of us are sitting around gabbing and wondering when it is going to start.  We completely miss the call for pairings.  We end up waiting around until about 10:30 before we finally find out we all lost the first round.  It wasn't that bad at least, I was paired up with Matt Endriss. Since we both didn't show up, we both get a match loss.  We got a good laugh out of that.  Some of us are thinking of dropping, but we already paid for the thing and the practice is always good.

So, next round comes up and I notice my deck is not in my pocket.  I walk up to my opponent, hand him a match win and start looking for my deck.  Some of the guys hanging around still try to help looking around tables and down the long path to outside were I took my cancer breaks.  A good hour after we were looking I gave up the search.  After a bunch of encouragement from everyone around me, I gave my wife a late night call to vent my sadness.  She gives me about a half hour pep talk while I consider what I have left with me.  If all else failed, I could always put together unpowerred Fish, which made me happy.  I was down but not out.

I decide to pick up my backpack out of the locker and head back to my room to open up my sealed winnings from that day and the day before.  I  sucked at T1 all week, but I at least won a bunch packs playing sealed.  So I get up to my room, and tell my cousins I lost my deck and get more sympathy.  I open my backpack and low and behold - missing deck.  I can be such an idiot sometimes.

Next day I go 0-3 drop and win more packs playing sealed.

I just wanted to say thanx to everyone for their help, thoughts, encouragement, and comfort.  It makes me feel part of a decent community of caring and helpful people.

I've been to past Pre-releases at Pastimes and usually it is a Satuday and Sunday affair.  It is kind of wierd that their events schedule shows neither.

I just gave them a call and the person who answerred didn't have any information about it and told me to check the events page sometime next week.  I feel kind of ran around.
10  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: just what is it about type 1... on: July 19, 2005, 09:55:44 am
Patience

As we get older our time sense speeds up. When you are a kid, that 4 hour drive to the parents cottage in the middle of nowhere was hell because it appeared it took so long.  When we get older, some of us will just take off right after work on a Friday for that 4 hour trip like it is nothing.  Compare how long an average T1 turn takes compared to the other formats.  Keeping kids busy keeps kids interested in what they are doing.  Sitting and waiting out the "5 minute brainstorm" can be taxing on the less mature mind.  I've played enough sealed and drafts recently* to realize that games last about the same as vintage, I draw about the same number of cards as in a vintage game, but I don't play them all in one spurt as I do In vintage; Many more turns are taken.

As a younger kid starting out, it is going to take time to acquire simple vintage staples like duals, forces, etc due to money concerns (read: saving) or just finding people that have them for trade.  Heck I remember Gen Con back in '96 where it took me forever with my crappy cards to find someone to trade me a berserk for my then best T1 deck:  r/g beats with ball lightnings and Ernham Djinns.

Now that I'm older (I just hit 30 last B/R announcement - so nice to have a bday on important days), I find I can wait out that 3-4 months between playing in a tourney.  In my early days of of cardboard crack, I couldn't wait to get into a sealed or casual thing with the friends because there where always new cards I didn't have that I could trade for and make new bad decks with.  There are way more things that take up time as you get older: wife, family, house, career.  Hobbies tend to go on the back burner, but tend to be more enjoyable when they actually get time.

11  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: [Forsythe Article] Cards That Will Never Be on: July 13, 2005, 09:40:11 am
Back in my early days of magic (about '95 or '96) I remember seeing a few around on usenet like:

Table  {4}
Taping table does not cause table to tap
{Tap} Table: annoy target opponent

Keg {1}
{Tap}, Sacrifice Keg: Tap all Soldiers and Knights

I remember about that time in either Inquest or Scrye had a card contest for such things.  I just wish I could find a copy of this one which included a great pic:

Baby In a Blender {2}
Play Baby In a Blender to scare the living bejusus out of target opponent. (or something along that line)
12  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: a "flame retardant" TPS on: April 15, 2005, 02:43:04 pm
The reason I will not run Dream Halls in TPS is Dream Halls creates a situation where the opponents Counterspells and Mana Drains all turn into Force of Will.
13  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Determining the best form of tendrils combo in Type 1 on: April 13, 2005, 09:20:32 am
A couple of things:

1) After playing basically the David Besso version of TPS last weekend (-1 Chain of Vapor, -1 Library, +1 Time Spiral +1 Tendrils main), I noticed a little better than half the time, plan B - Tinker->Colossus won more games than Tendrils or Brain Freeze especially during game one.

2) Two Cranial Extractions in the sideboard worked extremely well, especially in the Oath match. In the oath match, the 2nd game turn into turn 1: CE Oath with FoW backup followed by the oath player playing Arcane Lab next turn. Hardcasting Colossus did win the game though.
14  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Magic Online Reprint Policy and How it could affect Vintage on: February 08, 2005, 09:12:26 am

Magic Online Reprint Policy

Once Wizards of the Coast declares that an online card set is off sale, we will never sell the product again. We will, however, make a very small amount of the product available for use in limited tournaments and as prizes as we deem appropriate. The amount of an out-of-print set that we release in a year will be less than 1% of the initial online print run of that product. Print run is defined as the product purchased in at the Magic Online store as well as product awarded as prizes between the onsale date and offsale date of the product in question.

Individual cards from every set available on Magic Online are eligible to be reprinted in future sets.

Apparently the prices for older useful IPA cards are reaching the price of say Drains, Libraries, etc.  So now Wizards is trying to add more supply to stifle these costs.

Why Couldn't this work for older OOP sets that are staples for for vintage?  Assuming that WOTC could still print Beta, Arabians, Antiquites, etc.  Is there any reason they couldn't or shouldn't hold limited events for these?

I realise at events like GEN CON and such, they do try to hold Ittalian Legends drafts.   Although, when I was there, I did not see much in the way of interest for it.  Then again, I remember the price being a little steep.

Any thoughts, comments?

It should be easy. I have never heard of anyone that actually failed their Eagle Board.

What did you do for your service project btw?

I cleaned up our local dump and helped people put recycleables in the right place.  Then again, this was over 10 years ago before mandatory recycling and when paper drives still brought the troop money.

As a continuation of http://www.themanadrain.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=18809 and seeing that I'm a basic user and can't post in it, I thought I'd post this here.

I will have a Timetwister to lend to someone if they need it.

Also, I should have an extra Jet unless I can trade it for an Emerald before sometime Thursday. So If I cannot get the Jet traded, I would like to borrow an Emerald from someone, if possible.

If anyone is up for some Wednesday night testing/partying/networking, I will be at the Omni Severin Hotel sometime after 5pm.  Hopefully my cell works in Indy (414-405-GEEK)

So now we have this minivan with "SLURPIE" plates in deference to our black lab.

First turn, round 1 of the day my opponent tried to Mis-D my Time Walk.

Also, Blecher just wins games when their opponent (Me) doesn't draw a Force of Will even after 3 mulligans and Timetwister. I can only blame the shuffler, therefore me, for losing that match.

Please come one down. The more people, the merrier.  If there is a question rulewise (and we've had 'em), If I remember correclty, there is a net connection to look up answers.

Seeing as we're talking trades and stuff around here for sunday,  I have this extra Mox Jet now from the last tourney that I traded away for my Emerald.  If anyone has an Emerald for trade, that would make me most happy to be again fully powerred.

Adding or subtracting charge counters once your Explosives are in play does nothing to the value of “X – the converted mana cost of this particular artifact will still be equal to whatever you initially paid. (Thought you might want to know that, you know, just in case another Engineered Explosives were to show up.)

First off, Misinformation is double plus ungood.  The CMC will be 0 once it is in play, right?

The only deck I can think of that uses keg at this point are Sui-black variants.  It might be 1 turn faster to get rid of welders, but it won't kill roided Dryads.  It might find a home somewhere else.  The only deck I can see utilizing it at this point is RG beats.

What would be the difference between these two events?  I assume a "creature feature" means nothing but creatures. Am I wrong?

Also, It appears WOTC isn't doing much in the way of supporting 1.5  this year seeing as one of these events is the only 1.5 event.  Any 1.5 players have a comment on that?

For those of us already registered, you should have gotten a message by now that the event schedules are.  For those that are not registered already, here is the schedule (seeing as I got bored and tried to find it while not logged in and failed)

Code:

Day          Time          Duration          Cost
Thursday      1pm           4 hours          $6.00
Friday       11am           4 hours          $6.00
Friday       10pm           7 hours         $10.50
Saturday     10am          12 hours         $10.50
Saturday      9pm           4 hours          $6.00
Sunday       11am           4 hours          $6.00

*Each event has 128 slots besides Sat. 10am (500slots).

On a lighter note, if family and friends don't get off their buttoxes by mid june or so to figure out if they are coming or not, I will probably space in my hotel room. Skyway access is going to kick so much ass.

27  Eternal Formats / Creative / Reputable places to buy power on: April 10, 2004, 10:45:28 pm
http://www.cardshark.com is also a decent place to buy power.  Even though cardshark does use paypal, you can get your money back quite easily if there is some sort of problem.  Cardshark basically holds your payment for a month before they pass it on to the seller.

Looking for cards on cardshark is alot like lucking out on findin low ebay "buy it now prices".  For instance, right now there is an unlimited "good" condition lotus for $699 while about a month and a half ago I picked one up for $395.
28  Eternal Formats / Creative / Best/Cheapest way to get Power!? on: March 05, 2004, 05:07:26 pm
What I advocate may not be the quickest way to get power, but it has been has aquired my a Lotus, Library and (hopefully in the next month or two) my Time Walk.  Sell Cards. Search through your brinders and your boxes, for things you haven't looked at in months and sell them.  If there is one thing my wife has brow beaten into me, it is to evaluate what I have, and if i'm not using it, get rid of it/make it into something useful.  Use Ebay, use Cardshark, whatever, but make something useful for the stuf that is sitting in the corner collecting dust.

You would be amazed what what people will buy and for what price. For example, my last cardshark sale was  2x Sould Warden, a Browbeat, Reiver Demon, 2x Extract and a Serenity for ~$6.50.  I've made probably another 75 little transactions like this and another 50 or so for cards of higher value (forces, duals etc).  Heck, I thought priceing duels for $12 a piece was a bit high but people snatched them up quickly (less than two weeks). The money goes to sit in paypal untill I find a decent price on power on Ebay, etc.

And yes, Paypal does suck, but then again, I haven't had a problem with a transaction online yet <cross fingers>

OTOH, I am going to advocate getting power in the next year or less if you can.  I am making the prediction when Extended rotates again this year, there is going to be even more of an interest in T1/ 1.5.  As it is right now, extended encompasses 20 of the 32 sets that have been printed(not including reprints!).  Once extended rotates, it will encompass 13 out of 34(5th dawn and Earth have yet to be printed).  That is alot of cards and decks people will already have and want to use and won't be able to use in many tournaments.  I don't see WOTC doing all that much more to promote T1 since the masses complain about Power.  I can see WOTC trying to prote 1.5 since there seems to be less complaints about that format.[/b]
29  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Stifle And Maddess on: March 01, 2004, 01:07:22 pm
I'm almost complete positive I can stifle a Basking Rootwalla being played via Madness with Stifle, but as of yet I have not seen a decent explanation for why it works, or what happens to the Rootwalla once the Madness thrigger is stifled.

My thought is that it would go something like this:

a) (per some discard effect) discard Rootwalla
b) Player A removes Rootwalla from the game
c) Player A Plays Madness Cost of 0 and Rootwalla is put on the Stack
d) Player A passes priority, rootwalla does not get put into graveyard since the Madness cost was played.
e) Player B Plays Stifle targeting the Activated Madness Ability.
f)  Stifle resolves, Countering the Rootwalla, leaving the rootwalla in the Removed From Game Zone.

Can someone please confirm (or disprove) my thoughts?
