I had my collection stolen a few years back, and my homeowner's covered $2,500. It was a drop in the bucket, but it's at least something.
When I started amassing a collection again I talked to my insurance company and was able to get my collection covered. It just took some pictures as well as a 3rd party appraisal.
Were you able to go to a Magic dealer for the appraisal? If not what service did you use?

Also, I have a meeting with my Home Owner's insurance claim adjuster Tuesday, and they say it's a long shot, but maybe they will do something for me.
Sorry to hear about your collections being stolen David and Rich. I actually work in auto claims so I have some knowledge of the homeowners side of claims. I strongly recommend anyone that has sizable Magic collection, or any collection for that matter, to take pictures of it. Most homeowners policies, and even some renter's insurance polices, have personal property clauses in them that allow for a limit of around $2,500 to be claimed in the event of theft. Unfortunately, I'm almost certain no homeowner's polices will allow you to add a rider for a collection of cards onto the policy due to the nature of risk involved. If you do have pictures as evidence of your collection you may be able to claim up to the $2,500 personal property limit though. I'll check this week with the property department head just to clarify. $2,500 going towards a collection that looks to be around $15k-$20k definitely doesn't accomplish much, but it's something.... That being said this is a great event and I'll try and be there with a full car!

Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / EDH/Commander league in Newington, CT!!!
|

So after the sad demise of Fables Comics in Southington I decided to venture out to a new store. The closest one to me is Connecticon in Newington, CT. It's a pretty small shop in an awkward building but the staff is really friendly and welcoming. It's $30 to join and the prize support is split up between the highest ranking members of the league at the end of the season. There is a point structure which awards non-cheap combo strategies (for instance winning with a Felidar Sovereign doesn't count nearly as much as being the last man standing).
The season is run over the course of 3-4 months and the person who has accumulated the most points gets the bulk of the prize support, split up between the top 4. Come out and play some EDH/Commander!!! The league generally meets on Wednesday nights from 7:00pm onwards and on Sundays sometimes at night. You can register up to three generals each season.
This season I'm going to smash face with Karn, Ghost Council, and Omnath, which I just dumped a ton of money into!
Hope to see you there!
-Sean

Very glad to see the strong attendance at this event! Not surprised to see Dredge did well, Jesse's deck looks awesome, congrats to teammate Nick Detwiler, as well as the brave soul playing Ooze/Devourer combo.
Jesse's list stomped all over me post-board. Tendrils' answer to Dredge: I'm too fucking fast for you and laugh in the face of your Leyline of Sanctities! Although I did almost stabilize game 3 after mulling to 1 because tinker-> Myr Battlesphere is WEAKSAUCE. haha, hey I had to amuse myself somehow in that slaughter of a third game! Also Standings after 6 rounds of Swiss Place Name Points 1 Orcutt, Sean 14 2 Copes, Bill 14 Bill Copes isn't a man who likes to see his name second. In fact Bill Copes is going to "get there" in team car and run your ass over Ray for disrespecting his name and putting it after anything. This is the revised list of the standings after 6 rounds of Swiss: 1. Bill Copes 2. God In the Beginning there was Bill Copes.

Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Legacy tournament 1/15/11 Fables Comics, Southington CT
|
on: January 09, 2011, 02:27:53 pm

Fables Comics (formerly Kevin's Comics) is hosting their first ever sanctioned Legacy tournament! If the turnout is decent, they will be hosting more Legacy and possibly Vintage tournaments, which would be awesome! Details: 11/15/10 - starts at 4:00PM Sanctioned Legacy (no proxies) $10 entry, prize support dependent on # of participants Location: 5 N Main Street Southington, CT 06489-2518 US the parking lot is located in the back. I can attest that this shop is awesome. The staff is extremely friendly and courteous. They also host weekly FNM Magic with drafting of the most recent set and $5 Standard tournaments on alternating Fridays. Wednesday night is freeplay night and there's usually a decent turnout for multi-player and EDH games. Here is their website: http://fablescomicsonline.com/

I plan on taking this one down with meandeck iditarod tendrils.
Not until you run into my Winter Orb tech. My Polar Bear with an awkward orb shaped tumor will thwart your attempts to untap lands and feast on the flesh of your sled dogs.

I heard basic lands were actually banned for this event and you could use only snow-covered lands. This may have an affect on your attendence.....
In that case, I will Icequake the shit out of your lands and run Zombie Musher sui-black. My snow-tech will fuck yo penguins up.

Ok I've got my 3 Sun Titans. Now where's the asskicking list with sun titan shenanigans They're back in mediocere Type II decks where they belong. I'd run the Sharuum combo or Flamekin over Sun Titan any day. And there's no way in hell I'd even run those. Dredge is fragile enough to graveyard hate already without relying on a janky 3-4 card combo. DR a Primus or Angel of Despair, blow something up and be satisfied. Dreade Returning is a very overvalued strategy in Dredge.

This guy will beat bitches up in my EDH Rofellos deck.
But seriously, anything that costs 6 mana or more in Vintage needs to say "win target game" or get reallllly close.
Examples:
Yagmoth's Bargain: win game Mind's Desire: win game unless you have garbage luck
Just about every other card that costs 6+ mana can either be cheated into play somehow in Vintage.

Adan, I like your mainboard list a lot. If you're running the Flamekin win, Sphinx of Lost Truths is a strict upgrade from Cephalid Sage. Cutting the Sharuum engine is mainly a personal preference. I've been running the Flamekin engine lately because it frees up slots for Ichorids and Unmasks in the mainboard, which are both very strong in games 2+3 (Unmask is obviously better g3 than g2 because you're almost always on the play in g3 if you win g1 and lose g2).
Your sideboarding strategy is slightly off. Side out G2: -4 Unmask is correct -1 Dakmor is correct -3 Fate is correct -1 Flame kin -1 Sage -2 Dread Return = you should be taking out the DR package because your opponent’s disruption package is going to render it useless anyway. If you decide on keeping Terastadon in then that would be okay. I always keep 1 DR in because returning a Grave Troll is usually enough in games 2+3. -2 Thug = leave one in for added dredges + Ichorid fodder, you'll need it -1 Bloodghast = worse in games 2+3 than Ichorid
Side in g2:
Whole board
Changes for game 3 (assuming you're on the play)
Keep in the Unmasks -3 Darkblast -1 Chain if you know they're not running Leyline or just -4 Darkblast if they're not running Jailer
Those suggestions are for your current sideboard. Obviously some situations will change up your decisions, but that is a good template to go by. My board looks very different from yours:
4x Nature's Claim 3x Ingot Chewer 2x Chain of Vapor 2x Wispmare 3x Darkblast 1x Contagion
Mainboard I've been running a 3/3 Bloodghast/Ichorid split and I’m really liking it. I think I'm going to cut the Flamekin kill and try out 2x Terastodon. He's just fucking nutty. He can blow up 3 permanents, blow up your own critters if you need more zombies with Bridges your graveyard, and any combination in between. Correct me if I’m wrong but the tokens your opponents get don't even remove your own bridges if they die. If Rich Shay backs it in Oath, it has to be testable at least. The way I see it, if you nuke 3 permanents and you still lose a game of Magic, you're either retarded or have god-awful luck.

If you're looking for a substitution for Tops + SOFI the you should consider Serum Powders. They provide virtual card draw. The most critical part of any stax game is almost always the opening hand. You need to put constant pressure on your opponent in order to lock him/her out of the game. Serum Powder prevents you from mulliganing to oblivion. If stax has a strong enough starting hand, it's usually enough to lock your opponent out of the game. In every stax game I've ever played, as long as I have at least 2 threats + supporting mana in my opening hand, I'm completely fine without having a draw engine in the deck and playing draw->go. Serum Powder definitely enables you to do this.

Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: Where have all the Fish gone?

I've been tempted to run fish decks before. It seems like a pretty poor metagame call right now. The reemergence of Oath as a tier one deck has a direct correlation to fish dropping off the East Coast map. My real fundamental problem with fish, and any other 'hate' deck, is that the power/broken level is sooooo low. By that I mean pounding someone's face in with a 2/2 over 10 turns is just lame. Winning on turn 2-3, or locking someone out of a game is way more fun for me. Realistically, Fish, and most other metagame hate decks, get stomped on by nearly every type 2 deck. That just feels so wrong.

Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Strategies against goblins

The better question is: are you really worried about goblins showing up in mass numbers at any tournament on the East coast? Oath has been pretty prevalent on the East coast lately. Oath slaps goblins around like a little bastard red-headed stepchild. Goblins can win against Tezz but they are still a sizable underdog. Once Oath subsides, budget players may start bringing goblin decks out again in greater numbers. Until then, it will be very difficult for a goblins deck to make the top 8.
