Game time is getting close. I expect to see lots of people there casting brainstorm. It would be a shame to miss its going-away party.

Brainstorm will live on forever, in our hearts. Sad

6  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [Report] 1st place on Aug 11th in Sacramento, CA @ Adventures on: August 30, 2007, 04:57:31 pm
4 rounds cut to top 4 has ALWAYS been a problem at adventures so im guessing they will not soon fix the round amounts to the proper numbers which is a total drag..but alas.

grats to web of course, he pretty much always deserves it I suppose.

With 16 people, 4 rounds cut to top 4 is the standard tournament procedure recommended by wizards here. (Note constructed vs limited on single elim cuts) And the alternatives (swiss +1, cut to top 8) were pretty much just moving the suckiness around, not removing it.
At +1 person, I would gladly have run 5 rounds with a cut to top 8. I run the T1 and 24k events at Adventures to the highest quality that I can, and you'll find that they are very close to a PTQ or PT side event, except with a smaller staff. If you've had issues with their other tournaments in the past, let me know the details and I'll pass it along.

A big thanks to everyone who showed up, and I hope to see you again next month at our Beta Ruby tournament.
And if you have any comments or suggestions about the tournaments, let me know.

* * *
There were announcements on multiple messege boards . . . . Granted that there wasn't as much time between the tournament announcements and the dates that they were being held on as other tournaments, they were still announced in multiple places.

I suppose this is my fault for not checking the week prior, and for not frequenting ssg or the norcal vintage forums. I'd thought the latter were fairly inactive, but apparently they're not--although they're not especially user friendly.

Going forward, it would be awesome if events were posted more than a week prior, ideally (at least for me) on TMD.  Is there another one of these scheduled as of now?

I'm going to personally PM you with the date of the next tournament when I know it.

I know this is the same day as the Eudemonia Twister tournament. Apparently our calendar was made and printed up before the dates for this month's Eudemonia were posted on their website. Sad It's something we really did not want to happen and there will be more steps taken in the future to avoid conflicts with other vintage tournaments in the region.

Actually there was another combo deck as well. He was playing Taiga's and Glimpse and Kobolds with the Squirrel Nest and Earthcraft possibly(never saw the Earthcraft). I don't think he fared to well as his deck was severely underpowered compared to the decks that floated around.

Yeah, it was kobold clamp and squirrel craft merged into one great deck, running no proxies,  power, search or storm.
12  Vintage Community Discussion / Type 4 / Re: Type 4 Stack Lists and Resources on: May 03, 2007, 11:59:11 pm
My group has this errata:

Quanar - Once per spell.
Betrayal of Flesh - Entwine = 3 life.

Everything but Quanar is written right on the card.

I've seen other T4 stacks use that errata, but I use a different one because that one doesn't actually do anything. Quanar copies are new objects and should be legal targets for another Quanar flip Sad
I went with limiting his flip face down ability to once per a turn. Gives you up to 2 uses in one turn, and a bit of skill testing on when to flip him back down.

Betrayal of Flesh is entwine 0.
Jokulmorder: in my stack has Trample, and lots of blacked out lines in his text box.
Kumano: has 'or player' removed
Krosan Tusker: Removed "basic"
Death of a thousand stings: changed "each" to "a"
Akuta: Removed "sacrifice a swamp" and changed "each" to "a"
Wurmweaver coil: Removed green
Stronghold overseer: removed "+1/+0"
And removed mention of basic lands from cards like incarnations and shackles.

Except for Quanar and Betrayal, all my errata is using a sharpie to remove text. Removing text seems to be easier for players to understand than adding or changing text.
13  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Confused by Black Lotus Art? on: July 20, 2006, 02:24:46 am
I always thought it looked like some bacteria growth or maybe green slime mold. Or with it being aquatic, algae would work.

Seriously, if "Flower in front of a green backround" isn't good enough, then my next answer would be "Flower in front of a blown-up picture of green bacteria".

Don't forget Rumbling Slum and Wurmweaver Coil (if you have enough green creatures, that is). I also like Skarrgan Firebreaker, Bioplasm and Yore-Tiller Nephilim.

Wurmweaver coil is so much better if you take a Sharpie to the word green.

The reasoning is the most important thing here.

Paul mastriano claims that Flash is the strongest card in the deck.  I do not agree.  Alot would depend on the game state.  Agenda is the easiest card to stop.  If you can definatively stop the Agenda from hitting play, then you have removed the other two cards from his deck.

Intuition is a broken card in the deck with all the sick flashback and incarnation stuff.

I'd give him the Whispers, unless I had an instant to deal with Agenda, or it's very early game and he couldn't use Agenda effectivly.

Intution and Gifts Ungiven are both really good in t4.

That's right:  the Mist is actually invulnerable.  Smile

On topic:  I'm surprised no one has mention Acquire.  Acquire is Orrery/Slaver/Memmnarch/Tower/Fang/Lamp/Flute/Portal/Orb.

Grinning totem is Orrery/Slaver/Memmnarch/Tower/Fang/Lamp/Flute/Portal/Orb and Desertion/FoF/Opportunity/Deflection/Mist Dragon/Rout/Anything

All for the cost of another spell slot... Sad

I really like Spinal Embrace, too.  I'll probably get Clone last, and hopefully not Hunting Pack, which I personally hate

This one is tough, I really like Second Thoughts and Spinal Embrace. Slaver can be so good but it can also be a very mediocre effect, I've never seen it be as amazing as Smmenen claims.

Picks like this are really fueled by my deck at the time. A 1st pick like this would probably be whichever of those 3 I randomly decided was best at the time.

Soul Foundry.  I've found that unless you have something like Holistic Wisdom in your deck, you can't make a good use of all those cards from Tower of Fortunes because of the one spell per turn rule

If you first pick it, though, you can grab a lot more instants than usual.

You can never have too many instants.
Seriously, next time you draft t4, try picking very rigidly to this order:
1. Bombs
2. Instant card draw
3. Instants
4. Cyclers.
5. other

Trying a couple drafts like this showed me just how good instants are compared to the better sorcery cards I had been taking.

I've stoped picking cards like mask, canyons and timmy early because my deck has to be so much weaker overall to support them. If I see the right pieces, I will still build a creature centric deck. But that archtype is much harder to put together than what I normaly play.

^^^^^^^^^ I've been assuming it's first set, first pick.

Hanna is so fucking bad. As in unplayably terrible.

FoF is my first pick, with crush and plaugebearer up for second.

I've never used Augury, so I'm not sure how good it is, but I seriously doubt it's better than FoF.

Quote
The creator of type four, Paul Mastriano, is also in sync with this strategy, and he usually only drafts a few ways to win. Staying alive and setting up a solid board is more important than what you use to actually finish the job.

Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner.

You're always going to get some good cards to kill with, the important things to pick up in the draft are options (instants). Card drawing gives you access to more options (duh) and digs to your bombs faster.

Don't let the fact that the format is filled with huge fatties sway you from what you've learned about resources in normal magic.

There's very few large instant draw spells in t4, don't let them pass you by easily.
22  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Type 4 draft of the Day--5 Oct 04 on: October 05, 2004, 01:17:05 am
Here's the order I'd pick this set, with Goo being banned.

1. Tower of Fortunes - Card draw one, right? Activating this feels like cheating. If it resolves, you're at least at +3 cards. Card advantage wins t4, my clear first pick from this

2/3. Balance - Good wrath, but not first pick worthy.

2/3. Reiver Demon - Good sized body with a useful ability. Would be my first creature pick out of these because he pulls double duty as beats and removal, utility is so good.

4. Morphling - Small, hard to kill creature, good blocker. Tough call between this and Jareth on which is better. Morphling can be worth infy life with diamond valley though.

5. Soul Foundry - This is best with a high number of creatures in your deck, I hate having lots of creatures in my deck.

6. Jareth, Leonine Titan - Solid creature, slow kill though.

7. Treachery - I don't take sorcery speed targeted removal unless I have to

24  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Evolution Experiment on: August 22, 2004, 09:57:08 pm
This is a cool idea, a chance to combine modern deckbuilding with oldschool card pools.
To get a good view of deck evolution, I'd suggest going with unrestricted deck changing after each round, adding restrictings to deck building will only give an example of deck evolution for this tournament, not actual magic progression.
For rules, mirror and tapped blockers are the only significant changes, could we possibly just allow for life totals to be checked at end of step? The 6th change to Mirror's interaction ruins a card that had a huge impact on the game, while the blockers thing mostly just effects factories (common in decks then anyways) and Icy.

I'd like to see the restricted list for this based off the results from the experiment, like did these cards ever need to be restricted?

Ali from Cairo 1/25/1994
Dingus Egg 1/25/1994
Gauntlet of Might 1/25/1994
Icy Manipulator 1/25/1994
Orcish Oriflamme 1/25/1994
Rukh Egg 1/25/1994
Shahrazad 1/25/1994
Candelabra of Tawnos 5/2/1994
Feldon's Cane 5/2/1994
Ivory Tower 5/2/1994
Divine Intervention 8/1/1994
Recall 8/1/1994
Sword of the Ages 8/1/1994
Underworld Dreams 8/1/1994
Maze of Ith 10/10/1994
Zuran Orb 11/1/1995

And what about cards that have either been proposed for unrestiction or re-restriction now?

Braingeyser 1/25/1994
Channel 3/23/1994
Mishra's Workshop 6/13/1994
Mirror Universe 8/1/1994

These 4 interest me the most.
Is the Braingeyser effect running more than 1 or 2 of in a world with almost no other draw, and no Misdirections?
Can we build a deck to abuse Channel without any modern combo pieces?
Aggro-Shop decks still have the base 8 creatures, and can have almost any color built around it. Can the enviroment handle that?
Would Mirror decks want to run more than one, and if so, would they be hurt by its restriction?

These things can't really be answered by one match in a tournament though, would need like some reported exhibition matches and minis to get good results on what needs to be restricted.

I'm pretty sure that combo doesn't work anymore.

Quoted from Magic Comp Rules, 6/10/04

302. Untap Step

302.1 First, all permanents with phasing that the active player controls phase out, and all phased-out objects that the active player controlled when they phased out simultaneously phase in (this game action doesn't use the stack). See rule 217.8, "Phased-Out," and rule 502.15, "Phasing."

502.15. Phasing

502.15a Phasing is a static ability that modifies the rules of the untap step.

502.15b During each player's untap step, before the active player untaps his or her permanents, all permanents with phasing the player controls phase out. Simultaneously, all objects that had phased out under that player's control phase in. (See rule 217.8, "Phased-Out," and rule 302.1.)

502.15c If an effect causes a player to skip his or her untap step, the phasing event simply doesn't occur that turn.

Been awhile since I've commented on this, but I really think Visions should go lock-combo, and there's nothing for it to lose at this point.

Yeah, so it probably still loses to the control heavy decks, but atleast it can sweep the floor with the creature based decks.

//NAME: Sandsipoise
//  combo
        4 Equipoise
        4 Sands of Time
        1 Squandered Resources
//  search
        1 Teferi's Puzzle Box
        4 Anvil of Bogardan
        4 Vampiric Tutor
        2 Inspiration
        4 Impulse
        4 Foreshadow
//  other
        4 Vision Charm
        3 Coercion
// Mana
        9 Island
        6 Swamp
        6 Plains
        4 Undiscovered Paradise

If you're not familiar with the combo, it involves phasing out creatures with Equipoise and preventing them from ever phasing back in with Sands of Time. Then locking out thier lands with Squandered once the creature lock is in place.
Kill is via decking with Vision Charm, Anvil and Inspiration. All of which also have an alternate function in the deck.

Tonight was our first T1 event at Arena, so the turnout was kinda small and I had to loan out my madness deck to get another player.

Turnout was a massive 6 players:
Me with Meandeck Slaver
Dan (Cuandoman on TMD) with Keeper
Dave with Dragon (Judge and TO for the event)
Shawn with madness
??? with elves
??? with plains and things that are cast off plains

We use double elim for the tournament, which is still slightly confusing to me because I keep thinking it's swiss.

Round 1
VS. Bye
I eat my sour gecko and watch the two other matches.

Dragon beats elves (2-1)
Madness beats plains (2-1)

Round 2
Vs. Madness
Game 1
I get an early Welder followed by a Slaver that comes back for a few time walk effects powered by an Ancient Tomb that adds 10 to the dmg he's delt with Rootwallas and an A.wurm. I end up doing a desperate Windfall for 5 while I'm at 2, but all I get is a bunch of blue cards I can't cast, so I die.

-1 Slaver, -1 Windfall, -1 FoF, -1 Gilded Lotus, -1something else
+3 Bloodmoon +1 Plat Angel +1 Duplicant

I drop a turn 1 Welder that gets Tempered, he plays lizards, i start playing out the 3 Workshops in my hand, 3rd turn jar into Welder that gets tempered. next turn Duplicant an A.wurm (I tried getting him to cast a Roar, but he didn't go for it Sad ). Duplicant chumps a Roar token and I go to 8 with a Roar and two Rootwallas on his side. On my turn, I go off with Thirsts and a draw 7 and wind up with a smmemnarch, Blood moon and enough mana to steal his Roar token during his attack phase. After I cast an Angel on my next turn, the game is over.

Game 3
I drop a Blood moon before he's played more than a Rootwalla, then play a Pentavus a few turns later. He Lotus's down an A.wurm, Mongrel and Tempers my Welder. Pentavus's super attack+block skills combines with his Mana Crypt to win the damage race.
2-1 (1-0)

Dragon beats Keeper (2-1)
Madness beats ????

Dan and the two unknown kids leave after this round, leaving 3 of us in.

Round 3
Vs. Dragon

Game 1
We play mana for a few turns, then I drop a Welder and  play a Chalice for 2. He Intutitions for Necromany and goes off on his turn. I make him play through, hoping to get a draw during my upkeep by welding back Jar if Laquaatus is in the last 6 cards of his deck. Laquaatus does turn out to be at the bottom of his deck, but he senses my trickery and Dematerializes my Welder after milling me.
I don't play blessing, so I lose.

Game 2
+3 Blood moon, +1 Plat Angel +2 Tormad's crypt +1 BEB
-2 Gilded lotus -1 Memnarch -1 Windfall -1 FoF -1 Pentavus -1 Brainstorm -1 Wheel

I go first, and end my turn with a LoA, Gilded Lotus and Mindslaver in play. He plays mana and a Swarm. I draw a Blood moon and Slave him. I get rid of a Lotus, FoW and Vamp on his turn, then drop Blood moon on my turn. Chalice for 0 followed by an Angel ends the game a short time later.

Game 3
Let's play Spot the Errors!
My opening hand has 2 FoW, 2 bloodmoon, a pearl and 2 volcanics.
He leads off with a Swarm which I let go, then he drops a Sapphire and another mox and plays a Null Rod. I FoW the rod. On my turn, I draw a Volcanic, play land and mox. He Intutions for Squees. On my turn I draw a Lotus, play moon #1, holding Lotus for Moon #2. Moon #1 resolves and we're off to playing draw go for a few turns while I take beats from a Swarm followed by a  Squee. He gets a Compulsion and starts digging with his blue mox.
After taking some damage from Squee, I finaly have a Welder and Gilded Lotus down and draw a Thirst, I end up pitching a Chalice to a Thirst, Time Walking, drawing another Chalice and playing it for 0 with 7 mana untapped. Then he plays a basic swamp and I'm like OMFG who plays basic lands?? Sad

At the end of my next turn, he activates Compulsion and in responce I weld his Sapphire for a Null Rod, in responce he casts Necromancy and goes off with Compulsion, along the way to Laquaatus he discards a Coffin Purge and Dematerialize. Laquaatus ends up being one of the last few cards in his deck. He mills my deck then takes his turn, sending Swarm at me, then casts a Null Rod, using his Swamp. During my upkeep, I weld the Angel out of my GY and pass the turn, he's out of cards and loses.

Yeah, this game was filled with mistakes, possibly from turn 1. But somehow I end up winning after being ready to scoop.

Anyways, next match is Dragon(2-1) V Madness(2-1) for the double elim finals against me. (Omg I hate double elim)
This match lasts a total of 5 turns, most of which are in the first game, as Dave gets a first turn kill in the 2nd game. Sometimes dragon is just nutty like that.

We worked out a split instead of playing again, since everyone there would rather play T4 than sit through 2-6 more games of slavery vs dragon.

Maindeck for my slaver is the same as Smmenen's latest(?) build with Windfall and two fetchlands.
SB was modified for missing cards and metagame and was as follows:
3x Blood Moon
3x REB
2x Trike
2x Tormod's Crypt
1X BEB
1x Platinum Angel
1x Duplicant
1x Gorilla Shaman
1x Shattering Pulse

Jacob, Im pretty sure you can't play Lotus during upkeeps.

Oh, I assumed it was my turn, and that I had to set up a win on his.

No, all during the opponent's upkeep. Assume you start the game there.

Doesn't aluren in play, and then using cavern harpy, maggot carrier and soul warden do the trick?

Yes it does. Good job, I wasn't even sure if my puzzle had an answer.  Twisted Evil

Opponent has 7 cards in hand and 53 in deck, all are blank cards.
You have 52 cards in your deck, of whatever you wish (t1 legal)
