1  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / ALL the waterbury decklists (except for the t16 ones) on: February 16, 2005, 05:18:41 pm
Would anyone be as kind as to post the decklist for PTW's sex.deck?

I have downloaded the whole thing, but it is very hard to figure out which one it is without literally spending hours going trough the lists...

Thanks,
Hans
2  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Discussion] Transmute Artifact, what's the best build? on: January 21, 2005, 08:11:37 am
Hi,

I just wanted to bring to your attention a slightly different build, used by Andreas Klaes to top 8 in Essen on the 4th of december.

His build differs in two ways. 1) He uses FoW, 2) He has added 3 Solemn Simulacrum which provides some extra draw when tinkered away and also gives the deck mana stability.

To make room he has cut the 2 Gilded Lotus, 2 Fire/Ice, 1 Brainstorm, 1 Transmute Artifact and a land.

Other things to notice is that he has 7 basic lands and uses Mind's Eye and Duplicant instead of Crucible of Worlds and Platinum Angel.

The list:

Andread Klaes "Greets to NL"

1 Black Lotus
1 Duplicant
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana Vault
1 Memory Jar
1 Mind's Eye
1 Mindslaver
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Sol Ring
3 Solemn Simulacrum
4 Su-Chi
1 Sundering Titan
1 Triskelion
1 Ancestral Recall
3 Brainstorm
4 Force of Will
4 Thirst for Knowledge
1 Time Walk
1 Tinker
3 Transmute Artifact
4 Goblin Welder

Lands (17):
4 Island
4 Mishra's Workshop
3 Mountain
1 Strip Mine
1 Tolarian Academy
4 Volcanic Island

SB:
1 Duplicant
1 Eon Hub
1 Forcefield
1 Jester's Cap
2 Rack and Ruin
2 Red Elemental Blast
2 Shattering Pulse
1 Tormod's Crypt
4 Trinisphere

I don't know if Andreas has an TMD account. If he has it would be great to hear from him. Otherwise perhaps the other experts on this deck have something to say on this list.

And lastly, thanks to the creators (Morefling, Bram, BigMac?...) for this great deck.

3  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Enchantress / Endless wurm casual deck on: January 18, 2005, 08:37:51 am
Hi,

As one of those who played Enchantress back when it was good in type 1 (well, sort of) and liked it a lot, I am trying to come up with new ways to abuse this extremely fun card.

It is quite clear that the result will not be the new best deck in vintage, so here it is in the casual forum, though I still like my casual decks to be somewhat competitive.

I am looking for suggestions to make the deck better or more fun.

The relatively untested list:

4 Endless Wurm
4 Argothian Enchantress
4 Enchantress Presence
4 Rancor
1 Ground Seal
1 Sylvan Library

4 Auratog
1 Worship
3 Seal of Cleansing
1 Spirit Link
1 Enlightened Tutor
1 Replenish

3 In the Eye of Chaos
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Time Walk

1 Fastbond
3 Exploration
1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana Vault
1 Sol Ring
3 Ancient Tomb
4 Windswept Heath
3 Tropical Island
3 Savannah
1 Plains
1 Forest

Any and all suggestions are very welcome!

Great article!

Your first list is missing a card but since you wouldn't play that list again I guess it's irrelevant what the missing card is.

However, I'm curious to know why you cut skullclamp and also why Elvish Spirit Guide was replaced by Fyndhorn Elves?

5  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Oath/Mask on: September 25, 2004, 07:27:54 am
Hi Bebe

I just want to say great deck and _please_ do not stop sharing tech since it always is a true joy to see your newest creation.

Several times in the past I have tinkered around with your earlier u/g mask lists, but as you say, the dryads just wasn't doing enough. The main problem (after gush got restricted) was that the deck often would run out of steem, but I guess you haven't had that problem with this list. The oath sideboard truly looks like a beast vs. aggro.

I really have nothing else to add to this, but I will test the deck as soon as possible and then hopefully return with some useful comments.

Oh, and Cermit, would you mind posting your list? Or if you don't want to clog up this thread then just send me a PM with it?

Bebe - thanks for sharing!

Cheers,
Hans

I think your list looks very good. I'm sure you have seen "The Man Show" and your deck is pretty similar but with the addition of the SotF engine, which I at first glance think is a good addition. Henceforth a few things:

Have you tested "The Man Show"? And if yes, have you found the SotF engine to be better than the cards it replaces (i.e. primarily the burning wish and the Colossus combo)?

Have you found the need for 2-3 Su-Chi to make the chance of a 1st turn threat higher?

Again a very promising list which I'm going to test as soon as I get the chance.

Drake won't block a lavamancer with sigil on it...

IMO Ancestral Mask looks terrible, it's cc3 for what, +4/+4 if you're lucky and then it's card disadvantage if the target creature gets plowed or bolted in reponse (or just blocked by a juggy). Rancor would be better but I still wouldn't play that. It is just not worth it to cut down on creatures (= curiosity targets) in order to play rather weak enchant creature spells.

It's just that v. masque seems like it could be more consistent w/ permanent tutors in the form of survival.

It sure is. I don't think I have ever played a more inconsistent deck than Spoils Mask.

Regarding splashes:
Quote
I really can't see the relevance of the white splash. It gives you swords, but honestly, a horde of 12/12's seems just dandy vs. aggro.

Swords are also good against Dragon. For this matchup you also gain True Believer, which is a bit hard to cast since it is WW (except under mask) but that is no different than Withered Wretch, which you mention as one of blacks weapons against Dragon.

Playing UGb i have never been too crazy about Duress. Possibly because there are so many other things to drop on turn one (notably BoPs and Rangers). It is however obviously very helpful in a combo heavy field.

On the other hand I simply love the 3 Chains of Mephistopheles in my UGb SB.

Quote
Red gives you a faster win, which is irrelevant, as combo can still race you, and control can still stabalize. The only good thing you get is blood moon, which is an absolute house.

Yes, Blood Moon is wicked good. The effect of Anger is nothing to dismiss, though. It might not be that important to make the kill a turn faster but for the minimal investment it takes to put it in the graveyard, it also allows for better (faster) use of the creatures you find via survival as well as a certain surprise element. These elements can be crucial.

Quote
I have come to the conclusion, though, that lightning greaves NEEDS to be Maindecked

I play 2 in my UGb build and I'm pretty happy with them so far. Sometimes they are golden and sometimes they are unnescessary gravy, I'm still not completely sure that the matchups they are golden in are the ones where the deck most needs it, and likewise that they are of lesser use in matchups where you should have an advantage either way, but I'm leaning towards this conclusion.
(actually my main concern is that my Dreadnoughts will look somewhat out of place wearing those damn fancy lightning boots  Very Happy )

In fact I'm switching between the UGr, UGb and UGw at the moment but so far I haven't been able to pick a superior combination nor am I expecting to. IMO it just depends on what you expect to face.

Quote
Anyways, I feel like mask SERIOUSLY needs a tune-up.

I think Carl has been working on something, but I don't know how succesful he has been.

Clown of Tresserhorn: As you say yourself your experience is with Spoils Mask and not Vengeur Masque. I completely agree with your critizism concerning Spoils Mask (I was so disappointed by that deck). However, Vengeur Masque is a different story and is by far the best deck of the two IMO.

To support this statetement I will focus on the points you raised about Spoils Mask's incapacity to compete and show that Vengeur Masque does not share these:

Quote
The deck relies on a "combo" that doesn't win the turn it's cast

Quote
It's based around a creature. An artifact creature. Soooooo many decks can deal with it. From Swords to R&R, decks now have a wide array of weapons to deal with dreadnoughts. Not to mention, it takes 2 attacks to finish an opponent. Decks like FCG and Tog get away with "comboing out" with creatures simply because they win if they get a chance to attack

Volrath's Shapeshifter (+ Phage) will win you the game right there and it is not an artifact. It can even win on the turn cast if you are using Lightning Greaves or Anger (in UGr Masque).

Quote
V. Masque has about the weakest manabase I have every seen. I played a few matches against it, and it was terrible (although I was playing landstill, a probably favorable matchup).

I don't know why you would say this. It hs BoPs and 2-3 Forest to protect it against Blood Moon and further it has 2-3 Quirion Ranger to protect it from Wasteland. I think your experience is biased by the Landstill matchup because I have never had any serious problems with the mana base of this deck.

Quote
I really don't see how V. Masque is much better than, say, TnT. You do get some counters, but with TnT, you get threats along with better, proactive disruption. I would GLADLY take bloodmoons, wastelands, and pillars over a set of forces.

Well, in addition to having FoWs it is better in quite a few ways - to list the ones I can think of now:
1) Ability to win in one turn by shapeshifter + phage.
2) More resilient to artifact hate.
3) Favorable matchup against TnT.
4) Better against Dragon (Due to FoW and a faster kill). Not a good matchup though.

Also, I play 3 Blood Moon in the SB of my current UGr list, so that card is not a reason to choose TnT.

Quote
Has anyoner considered FeverMask? I know it sucked in the past with Ankh sligh running rampant (It ran like 7 fetch lands), but ankh sligh is all but dead. It seems like it may work pretty well as it has a plethora of cantrips and cheap counters, as well as GREAT tutors in the form of lim-dul's vault.

I have, since I really liked the list back then. Sadly, I think Finkels are a  tad bit slow these days, so I never got around to really test it. It would be great if you would take on the task, though  Very Happy

To sum up I definetly think Mask decks in the form of Vengeur Masque is a contender today. While it isn't the "best deck" it can take on pretty much everything and still has the advantage of being "undertested" by many players due to its relatively rare showings.

As regards to splashing in Vengeur Masque, I think it is hard to pick a best color. White gives you an edge against aggro (StP) plus Meddling Mage, black offers good weapons against control (Chains, Duress) as well as graveyard hate (Whittering Wretch) and red gives you Land hate in Blood Moon, artifact hate in Gorilla Shaman and Goblin Welder while also allowing you to play Anger.

As for the deck, I'm very torn on it. It looks like a pile, but then it looks interesting at the same time.

This was exactly how I felt when I saw it and hence thought it would be worthwhile to discuss the deck.

JACO:
Quote
If you analyze his card choices, you will see that outside of Turbulent Dreams, he will never be hard casting a spell with double-blue or double-black in the casting cost. No Mana Drain, Hymn to Tourach, Sinkhole, etc. Throughout most of the game he will simply need one blue or one black.

All true. Perhaps it isn't all that shaky after all. One thing to notice is the lack of fetchlands compared to the list posted by Matt which has 6 compared to 2 in the Madrid list. While it is obvious that drawing lands is often good under a Void extra fetches could help against color screw. As it is there is actually quite a few permanent on-color lands (6 of each to be exact). This number is higher than what you find in a lot of other decks (e.g. there are usually only 4 taiga and perhaps 1 mountain in TnT).

Looking at Matt's list again, he has chosen to cut a couple of moxen which seems right since they are bad under Void. Also adding the lotus seems like a no-brainer since it allows early (broken) Intuition and Nether Void plays.

This frees up one or two slots depending on if we're keeping the Ruby or not and I think another slot can be found by cutting 1 Turbulent Dreams. Sure it's neat utility and a discard outlet for Ghoul but with UU in the cc I think 3 is at least one to many.

However, by cutting moxen we are in danger of becomming too land light - so any ideas on what else to cut? Duress? Stifle? Perhaps cut the 3 Duress in favor of the 3rd Stifle and the 4th Circular Logic which as a side effect gives us more cards that pitches to FoW? Duress is nice, though...

I'm also not sure if the 3/3 ratio between infestations and ghouls is the right one. Testing the 4th infestation seems obligatory.
12  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Deck discussion] Madrid 1st - Nether Void w/ Bazaars on: February 15, 2004, 03:36:58 pm
I want to direct attention to the deck that recently won a tournament in Madrid. From what I can tell from the top 8 the tournament was rather power heavy (6 of 8 lists), so I think this somewhat unusual deck deserves a bit of discussion.

First of all here is the deck list (from Morphling.de):

// Gul's Roul's by Alejandro Escribano

3 Ashen Ghoul
1 Demonic Tutor
3 Duress
1 Entomb
3 Nether Void
3 Zombie Infestation

1 Ancestral Recall
3 Circular Logic
4 Force of Will
2 Intuition
1 Mystical Tutor
2 Stifle
1 Time Walk
3 Turbulent Dreams

4 Squee, Goblin Nabob

1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Sol Ring

4 Bazaar of Baghdad
2 Island
4 Mishra's Factory
2 Polluted Delta
1 Strip Mine
2 Swamp
4 Underground Sea
3 Wasteland

SB:
3 Chalice of the Void
2 Coffin Purge
1 Duress
4 Energy Flux
2 Sickening Dreams
1 Stifle
1 Wonder
1 Zombie Infestation

Initial Thoughts: Well, a few things don't look too good:

1) It's a whooping 63 cards. Cutting down would surely be an improvement.

2) The mana base contains a record breaking 12 non-colored lands and has only 9 blue and 9 black sourcess, though 4 basic lands help a little. Also the opponent probably wants to save his wastes for bazaars and factories.

3) It has only moxen and Sol Ring for accelleration which combined with bazaars means Nether Void will hit rather late.

On the plus side there is clear synergy between the Nether Void element and the ghouls and zombie infestations in addition to the traditional synergy between the discard outlets and squee, ghouls and circular logic. Also Turbulent Dreams looks interesting...

So what do YOU think? Is this a "pile" that caught a lucky break or a deck list with potential? Any suggestions on improving the list?

Finally if Alejandro or any players that have seen this deck in action are here at TMD it would be great to hear from them.

Hi

My name is Hans Henrik Rasmussen and I'm 23. I live in Denmark where I have been studying political science for about 4 years.

I've been playing since Antiquities but had a 2-year break after Homelands came out (wonder why).

I have relied heavily on BD and TMD  in the last years due to a short supply of testing partners but luckily it seems as though the Danish type 1 scene is expanding so things are starting to look up  Very Happy

The last 5 month I've been on an internship in Brussels, Belgium where I was lucky enough to hook up with Carl Devos and so got a chance to go to Dülmen.
