1  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: [Worldgorger Dragon] A return to the past ? on: June 17, 2010, 08:16:57 pm
I've been playing WGDX since '04 when Diceman updated it with Read the Ruins and such. Unfortunately I have to agree, the way WGDX looks right now it really isn't the best choice out there by far. If you want to still win with Dragon then I would suggest something like the list below. It needs to be tested but I think it has a lot of potential:

Reanimator X

1 Black Lotus
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Sol Ring

2 Worldgorger Dragon
1 Oona, Queen of the Fae
1 Iona, Shield of Emeria
1 Terastodon
1 Sphinx of the Steel Wind

4 Force of Will
3 Duress
4 Entomb
3 Intuition
2 Deep Analysis
4 Animate Dead
3 Necromancy
1 Tinker
1 Time Walk
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Brainstorm
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Demonic Tutor

4 Bazaar of Baghdad
4 Polluted Delta
3 Forbidden Orchard
2 Underground Sea
1 Tropical Island
1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
1 Island
1 Swamp

Potential SB:
4 Oath of Druids
3 Ravenous Trap
2 Nature's Claim
1 Ancient Grudge
1 Ray of Revelation
1 Coffin Purge
1 Necromancy
1 Duress
1 Inkwell Leviathan

The list is a fusion of both WGDX and Legacy Reanimator. Entomb is obv the top engine and works very well with the Dragon Animate auras. I'll get back to you after some testing, but in the mean time, lmk what you guys think!
2  Vintage Community Discussion / Type 4 / Re: Type 4 Created Cards Proxies on: July 15, 2009, 07:07:57 pm
here are the cards that I made for my cube:

#1 - Glacious Flip Card

Side 1: Glacious the Planesglider 1UUU

Artifact Planeswalker - Glacius

Flash, flip Glacius when he runs out of Loyalty counters.

+10: Gain control of target permanent.
-30: Counter target spell. (You may use this ability as an instant)
-60: Ignore the one spell per turn rule for the rest of the game.

40 Loyalty

Side 2: Glacious, Vedalken Conquerer

Artifact Creature - Vedalken Dreadnought

Shroud, Unblockable

Counter the first spell an opponent plays each turn.

20/20

#2 - Chance//Purpose Split Card

Chance 1UBR

Instant

Flip a coin. If you win the flip each opponent discard their hands and you gain control of all permanents. If you lose the flip discard your hand and sacrifice all of your permanents.

//

Purpose 1GWU

Instant

If every other player has cast a spell this turn draw 7 cards and gain 1 million life. If not, you may put as many creatures from your hand into play until the end of turn.

Here's my Flip Planeswalker/Creaature that's in my cube:

Side 1: Glacius the Planesglider 1UUU

Artifact Planeswalker - Glacius

Flash, flip Glacius when he runs out of Loyalty counters.

+10: Gain control of target permanent.

-30: Counter target spell. (You may use this ability as an instant)

Loyalty 40

Side 2: Glacius, Vedalken

Artifact Creature - Vedalken Dreadnought

Shroud, Unblockable

Counter the first spell an opponent casts each turn.

20/20

This guy is so much fun to play with! On paper he's insane but at a table of 4-8 he's fair to deal with.

are kids getting dumber over time, or what?

Yes, yes they are. If not dumber, they are definitively getting lazier and need everything to be easy to understand so they don't have to think too hard.

Agreed.
5  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Major Rules Changes Announced!!! on: June 13, 2009, 02:56:54 am
This is just me but the ONLY rules change I have a real problem with is the loss of Stacking Damage in combat. All the Wizards personnel who say "Stacking Combat Damage isn't flavorful" is just horse shit. I've been playing for quite a while and have taught many people how to play magic at a competitive level. Sure the stack was hard to teach but the hardest part of the stack they couldn't understand at first was putting, ordering and resolving abilities and spells not combat damage. Here's how I would explain combat using the stack to I guess "my students" with very clear flavor behind the "Damage on the Stack" phase: (this explanation will be completely flavored to show you a full combat step in the land of Magic the Gathering, enjoy!)

Scenario - How Mogg Fanatics should be able to kill a Grizzly Bear: (a major usage of Stacking Damage)

I am an all mighty Planeswalker seeking battle against another Planeswalker who threatens my land.

To start my the first wave of attacks, I summon my battalion of Mogg Fanatics who are ambushed by my opponents Grizzly Bear pack. (Declare Attackers and Blockers)

During the battle, my Mogg Fanatics are dealt fatal injuries while the defending Bears barely survive. (Assigning Damage)

While suffering, I order the Fanatics to use their self-destruct ability (sac: deal 1 damage to something) to try and finish off the Grizzlies so they perish aswell. (Damage on the Stack)

My apposing Planeswalker sees the order I have given the Fanatics and trys to think of something to save his Grizzly Bears before they share the same fate. (Opponent being able to respond to the Fanatics ability during Damage on the Stack)

Fortunately for me, he has run out of Mana and is unable to save his Bears from the Fanatics kamikaze final blow. (Ability resolving while Damage still on the Stack)

Finally the Grizzlies die due to the initial attack and finishing attack of the Mogg Fanatics. (Damage resolving)

Quick Scenario 2 - How Unsummoning your attacker with damage on and the blocker still dieing should work flavorfully as well.

- I attack with a Hill Giant
- Opponent blocks with Hill Giant
- We both put damage on the Stack
- While both creatures are suffering from their fatal wounds, I cast unsummon returning my Hill Giant to my hand to aid his wounds so he eventually recovers and survives.
- Opponent has nothing and watches his Hill Giant bleed to death from his wounds. (Damage Resolving)

The world of Magic is a Mythical place with Dragons breathing fire, Humans wielding swords and Elves shooting Arrows etc. Unless every kind of weapon in Magic kills you instantly (cards with split second), you'll usually be able to do one final attack (an ability) or have your commanding Planeswalker heal you before you actually die from your wounds. To me, assigning damage is when the creatures actually deal their damage. Actually putting the damage on the stack is the window of opportunity where the creatures controllers can heal their creatures wounds before they actually die after damage resolves. Using damage on the stack makes combat more realistic and believable in my opinion.

The way the rule is after M10, combat is like 2 or more creature being shot in the head simultaneously with a shotgun at point blank range. There is no time to actually save/heal your creature(s) without potentially getting blown out by your opponents removal spell (before damage). This will make limited a lot less complicated and skill intensive because Wizards is extracting an entire Phase from the Step and not replacing it with anything. It also ups the value of the already favored combat trick - targeted Removal, and greatly devalues the already less favored tricks - Pump/Protection spells. Actually, Pump spells might not even be playable in limited anymore because of this.

I will be attending GP Boston and will test out the new rules and see if they will be bearable. If I get blown out and get 2 for 1ed too many times because I couldn't stack damage, I'll probably be limiting my Magic play to mainly Eternal formats where only the Mana Burn rules changes will mainly only apply (not a big deal). Although this will make aggressive strategies not as appetizing unfortunately but that's another story I don't have time for.

I'd like to hear your opinions on my argument. Noah Long
6  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: New Worldgorger Dragon Combo -- Still Viable? on: April 21, 2009, 09:26:36 pm
I think in the current Vintage, you need to be playing Tinker and Inkwell over 2 Oona. Extirpate kills you if yo play 2 of the same win condition. Inkwell is better then Oona anyways.
7  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: New Worldgorger Dragon Combo -- Still Viable? on: April 14, 2009, 11:11:19 pm
true, but it also doesn't double as a Storm defense too. The fact that you can Tinker it and Animate it in my mind is just better.
8  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: New Worldgorger Dragon Combo -- Still Viable? on: April 11, 2009, 10:16:31 am
Chant isn't played because it doesn't stop Crypt/Relic, other activated abilities. Orchard token you could really care less about because you are a combo deck. The only real time I'd ever tinker, is when I had an opening grip of a tutor and not much of the combo. The token also do not block Inkwell because the guy has Islandwalk and if need be Shroud, and will probably ot race the tokens.
9  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: New Worldgorger Dragon Combo -- Still Viable? on: April 08, 2009, 04:10:58 pm
Hey, long time no post. So WGDX is up for discussion again... here's the list I've been working on for the past while (bare in mind, this is for a Landstill, Fish heavy meta with some Ichorid and Tezz):

WGDX

4 Worldgorger Dragon
1 Oona, Queen of the Fae

1 Tinker
1 Inkwell Leviathan

4 Intuition
3 Read the Runes

4 Bazaar of Baghdad

3 Necromancy
3 Animate Dead
1 Dance of the Dead

3 Deep Analysis
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Brainstorm
1 Imperial Seal

4 FoW
3 Duress

1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Ruby
1 Black Lotus
1 Sol Ring
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana Vault
3 Polluted Delta
3 Forbidden Orchard
2 Underground Sea
1 Tropical Island
1 Island
1 Swamp

SB:

4 Oath of Druids
3 Bogardan Hellkite
2 Abeyance
1 Duress (or 3rd Abeyance)
1 Echoing Truth
1 Platinum Angel
1 Yixlid Jailer
1 Entomb
1 Tundra

Different main deck choices:

1 Brainstorm: I like BS over the 4th DA in this list because of the SB Oath package.

1 Imperial Seal: I cut the main deck bounce from Peter's list (DicemanX) and went with an Alternate win in the main deck. Seal helps get an card for either win condition and also helps get other win conditions and singletons after board.

1 Tinker and Inkwell: Inkwell Leviathan has shown it is the best P/T win condition to date in Vintage. It is such a house in all of WGDX's bad match ups, and I thought it was necessary main deck.

Different SB choices:

Fish: I really like Bogardan Hellkite as the main win with Oath of Druids, especially in this match up. I also board in Duress.

Landstill: Before this was THE unwinnable match up. Since Ichorid is an auto loss for them, they have opted for no GY hate. So, the plan with WGDX is to keep the combo in and just win through Abeyances and an extra Duress along side Inkwell Leviathan which is a house in that match up. If you do see GY hate in game 2, you could also board into Oath for game 3.

Tezz: This match up does board into GY hate but most of it come in the form of Yixlid Jayler and artifacts. So again with the Abeyance and extra Duress plan along side the Inkwell Leviathan ftw.

Long: This match up is also a little hard because their deck is faster then yours. So, my goal for WGDX is to become faster then Game 1 and have more disruption then them. Platinum Angel replaces Inkwell, Abeyances and the Duress come in aswell as the Entomb because it speeds up the deck a fair amount. A couple years ago, I used to main deck Entomb but DicemanX and I have agreed that Entomb is only good in that match up and Ichorid too.

Ichorid: This is the next scariest match up next to Landstill. Platinum Angel, Echoing Truth, Yixlid Jaylor and Entomb all come in for this match up. Intuition and your tutors are probably now the most important cards for you because it can get Yixlid Jaylor or Platinum Angel into play by turn 2-3. So mulligan until you get one of these cards or a really fast combo hand.

It's the list I've had success with. The list DicemanX made with the Oath SB. I've posted it a while ago in the WGDX thread.

Hey, I split in the finals of a Lotus Tournament in Tornoto with Menedians Composite list he posted with 1 change to the main deck (I played Relic over Crypt main deck).

Composite Tezzeret Control

1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Sol Ring
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana Vault
3 Polluted Delta
3 Underground Sea
2 Flooded Strand
1 Tolarian Academy
2 Island
1 Snow-Covered Island
2 Volcanic Island
1 Tropical Island
1 Library of Alexandria
4 Force of Will
4 Mana Drain
4 Thirst For Knowledge
2 Tezzeret The Seeker
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Time Walk
1 Brainstorm
1 Tinker
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Fact or Fiction
1 Merchant Scroll
1 Gifts Ungiven
1 Ponder
1 Misdirection
1 Echoing Truth
1 Voltaic Key
1 Time Vault
1 Sensei’s Divining Top
1 Relic of Progenitus
1 Darksteel Colossus
1 Yawgmoth’s Will
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Regrowth
1 Duress

Sideboard:
2 Tormod’s Crypt
2 Red Elemental Blast
1 Pyroblast
2 Duress
1 Yixlid Jailer
1 Hurkyl’s Recall
1 Extirpate
1 Pithing Needle
1 Relic of the Progenitus
1 Rack and Ruin
1 Engineered Explosives
1 Pyroclasm

Round 1 - Painter

Game 1 - We counter all our spells but I started with Library so we get to a point where I have 3 cards and he has none. I finally draw something other then permission and seal the deal.
Game 2 - I get a busted draw with the turn 1 Duress, Tinker for Vault, play Voltaic Key and take all the turns I want. 2-0

1-0

Round 2 - U/R Landstill

This match wasn't even close. I mulligan game 1 and have a hand full of Artifact mana. he sticks a Null Rod and then rips a rucible for Wasteland lock. Game 2 he resolves another Null Rod an I shit my pants again. 0-2

1-1

Round 3 - U/G/B Fish

Game 1 - I keep a sketchy hand and gets a turn 2 Bob to stick follwed by a couple of Goyfs. I can't draw something in time.
Game 2 - I keep a spicy hand of turn 3 Tezzeret with lots of back up.
Game 3 - I keep a Library hand and draw about 3 cards off it till he Wastes it. I'm way up on cards now and try for a Tinker. We go back a forth until it resolves and Darksteel Colossus has his way with him. 2-1

2-1

Round 4 - Mirror

I don't really remember much about this match. All I remember is that he wins the first but I win the match. All the games were complete blow outs on both sides. No mulligans. 2-1

3-1

Round 5 - Shop Aggro

Game 1 - I keep a sick hand of Tinker, Thirst, Ancestral and Force with some other blue card but no blue source. I do have a Mana Crypt and a Relic of Progenitus so decide to keep knowing what he's playing. I play the Crypt and cycle the Relic but fail to hit the U source on turn 1. He plays a Mox a Workshop and casts a Solemn which I let resolve. I rip the U source (HL) the following turn and pass. He casts a sword of Fire/Ice which I cast Thirst in response pitching an Artifact. I counter the Sword and take 2. I untap and cast Ancestral hitting another Force and another land. I cast Tinker for Colossus and win out.
Game 2 - I keep a slower hand with a couple draw spells and a couple Drains. He casts a turn 2 Jester's Cap which he cracks the following turn taking 1 Tezzeret, Colossus and the Time Vault. If he had just taken the 2 Tezzerets and the 11/11 I would have scooped. So I keep playing and he fails to play creatures for the next couple turns. I finally draw a tutor for the last Tezz and I attack for 20 with 4 artifacts for the match. 2-0

4-1

Round 6 I draw making it in in 8th. 4-1-1

Top 8 - Mana Ichorid

Unfortunately I have to play a Teammate in the top 8 so we talk, prize split and play it out. I mulligan to 5 game 1 and draw nothing. Game 2 he keeps a poor hand and I Tinker for Colossus. Game 3 he casts an Unmask which I think a while about countering. My hand is Force, Ancestral, Tinker, Relic, Land, Mox, Top. I think and think and finally decide to counter it by removing Ancestral. Marty shits his pants after seeing Recall RFG, plays Bazaar and passes. I cast Mox, land and Relic and pass. He Dredges and hits nothing important. and passes. I hit a Mox but I don't cast Tinker so I can keep mana up for Relic. So I just play top and pass. He does the same and passes without hitting a Meoba, Therapy or Needle for the Relic. I top EOT and hit a Land. I cast Tinker and get Colossus. He fails to ripo a Chain of Vapor and I get there. GGs Marty.

Top 4 - Mirror

Game 1 - I keep a slow hand but it's ok vs the Mirror (4 lands, Drain, FOF, Regrowth). He duresses and takes the Drain. I play Reegowth and get Drain back. He Thoughtseizes and take FOF this time. I draw a Thirst and Pass with 4 mana up. He plays land and passes. I opt not to cast Thirst so I can have a Drain back up next turn. I draw, play a land and pass. He casts his own Thirst main phase and I respond by casting Thirst. He lets it resolve and I draw Tinker, Drain, Mis Direction. I discard 2 lands and let his Thirst resolve. Then he trys to cast his own Tezzeret which I Drain he casts Force of Will which I MisD to his Tezzeret so I don't burn for 5. I rip a Mox and cast Tinker for the GGs.
Game 2 - I don't remember much of this game but I remember finishing it with a Darksteel Colossus and 2 Counters with him having nothing in hand.

Finals - Split

I would imagine Flash being the best deck in this format no?
14  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: 1st Ottawa Lotus with Mana Ichorid on: November 06, 2008, 01:28:46 pm
agreed. Unmask was abolutely insain. It also acted as a discard outlet for me in the Semis game 1 which allowed me to win on the first turn with Careful Study and then Breakthrough off a Mox. It also allowed me to fight through Forces all day and strip draw effects and win conditions to solidify game 1s all day long. I didn't lose a game 1 all day.
15  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: U/W Workshop on: October 17, 2008, 10:15:10 pm
So after some games we dfound Tinker did nothing but search up Karn and Tolarian Academy only made up mana burn a lot. So, I did this to the deck:

- 1 Tinker, 1 Academy

+ 1 Crucible, Ghost Quarter

We also descided that Razormane is better in the deck over Glowrider because it gave the deck some kind of win condition plus the added bonus of beating up on the Fish decks running around in my meta. Why Masticore over Triskelion? A) no Welder in deck, and B) Null Rod is big in my meta too.
16  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Worldgorger Dragon Combo -- Still Viable? on: September 16, 2008, 06:18:15 pm
Hellkite is probably, off the top of my head, the fastest clock for Oath of Druids with animate spells. You oath a dragon 5 damage, oath a second 10 damage, attack with first dragon 15 damage, then pitch and animate 20 damage. Plus, in my environment there is a lot of fish and stax and Hellkite is nuts vs. that meta.
