This past weekend, I ran the Philly Open for the sixth time.  I had decided to run a Day 2, in the hopes that I could encourage players to make the trip a weekend, stay, and play in multiple tournaments.  I had gotten feedback in the past that "if you made it a full weekend, I would definitely make the trip".  So, starting a few months beforehand I booked the PA Convention Center for a 300 person room on Saturday and a 150 person room for Sunday, scheduling two events on each day.  This was the only available weekend for me; unfortunately it fell on Mother's Day (Sunday).  I had 90 players for Type 2 on Saturday, and 41 players for Vintage on Saturday.  I try to figure out the math on prizes so I break even (including the venue, staff, etc), with an eye towards optimism.  I had a total of 26 players between the two events on Sunday.  Because of the low turnout on Sunday, it will be a long time before I run another tournament with a Day 2.  As a TO, I lost about $4,000 running the events this weekend.  I was set up as a dealer there, but I don't think it comes close to me breaking even.  How do I proceed in the future? If anyone has any suggestions (other then avoiding holiday weekends Sad) that they feel would help, I'd appreciate your suggestions for the November Philly Open 7.

P.S. I am in the process of assembling all of the standings to create the Player of the Year Rankings.  I know this is taking forever, and believe me, I apologize.  Once everything is up to date it should be much easier to maintain tournament to tournament.  Thank you for your patience.  Also, my old computer crashed and I haven't installed the software to update my website yet.  It will be out of date for a few weeks, but then everything should be back up and running.

Thanks guys,

-Nick

I don't think that you're doing anything wrong.  I think it was just an unfortunate situation with PTQ dates, Regionals, and other tournaments.

You run a great show Nick.  I really think this is just an outlier.  I hope you treat it as such.

Sorry things did not go better Nick- your tourneys are great and I try to let people know about them as much as possible. Hopefully I will win the next one, as second place is miserable.

Dom was playing drain tendrils and he defeated David in the top 8 then promptly got STOMPED *snicker* by Nate.

It's a shame more ppl didn't turn out for this thing. May has been and will continue to be a busy/stacked month as far as tournaments go, hopefully it was just a bad luck weekend.

Starcity would jump at that... Maybe call it "Meddling Mage exploring Vintage."

I wish I had taken better notes on the tourney. Also, I don't really want to talk too much about decklists or deck choices, as I think that the some of the popular notions about some of the popular decks are quite wrong. So, I'm not sure how great a report I could produce.

Most of my matches were not that interesting:

Round 1 vs Dredge: I basically won this match 3-0. I should have won game 1 but both of us failed to realize I should have been trampling with my Inkwell Leviathan which I had Tinkered out on turn 1.  It was quite embarrassing for me, but I had acknowledged at the start of the match that I was feeling foggy and was not ready to play. Luckily this mistake pissed me off enough so that I got my head in the game afterwards.  I won both sideboarded games with Dredge hate.

Round 2 vs Dredge (I think this guy just beat Matt Elias in a finals somewhere): I lose game 1, but dredge hate works game 2.  In game 3 on the draw I keep a hand of Leyline of the Void, Ponder, and 3 random cards and draw a land in my first draw step and win.

Rounds 3 and 4 I believe I beat another Tezz deck and a Drain Tendrils deck, but I'm pretty sure both these matches were blowouts where I just drew tons of restricted cards very early in the games.

Round 5 I lost to Nathan (who also beat me in the finals).  My draws were quite poor in these games.

Round 6 I IDed.

In the quarters I played Evan and his MUD deck. The first two games were both blowouts.  Game 3 I should have won easily but failed to play aggressively and nearly lost because of it.  I do not have the experience of playing against Smokestack that other vintage players have.  I managed to win the game despite being Jesters Capped and left with only Dark Confidants to win.

In the semis I beat another MUD deck, I got decent draws here and won pretty easily.

I won game 1 of the finals- I believe I had Ancestral Recall in my opener with Spell Pierce backup.  Game 2 I was destroyed by Library of Alexandria (I'm the only Tezz deck in the world with Strip Mine and Wasteland, there is no justice!).  Game 3 I mulliganed into Ruby, Sol Ring, Ancestral Recall, Dark Confidant, Force of Will, Blue Card and decided to keep and did not draw a land in time to put up a fight.

Would you mind elaborating more on this point either here on the forums or in an article, I'm always happy to see different perspectives on Vintage.

Seconded - especially if you have thoughts on the current direction of Oath, various Dredge builds, the role of Jace the Mindsculptor, and the (overly long) restricted list.

I'm not a big fan of Oath.  I think it is a deck that is really good at beating bad and unprepared players and is otherwise mediocre.

I think Mr. Hangley plays much better and sober magic than the god of thunder. Nice result Jimmy, and to all. Very sorry I couldn't make it, Nick your tournaments are always a blast. Hopefully the low numbers will improve.

I'm not a big fan of Oath.  I think it is a deck that is really good at beating bad and unprepared players and is otherwise mediocre.

Hi Chris, this is Brad.  You probably wouldn't know my handle on this site from the times we've talked in person.  As a bit of reminder we've played the Tezz vs. Oath match a couple times in tournaments.  The most memorable event was at the last Philly Open (not a week ago, the one before that), where my own Oath ended up backfiring and you decked me with Ancestral.

In many ways I agree with your statement.  There are times where playing Oath feels like playing Tezz, except I also have these completely dead draws taking up valuable deck space.  The benefit of "upgrading" Dark Confidant into Oath doesn't change the fact that Bob himself is pretty good too.  There are some other cards like Sower of Temptation which may be the right card...but are completely unplayable in Oath.

Because of those reasons I was heavily debating whether or not to even play Oath at this tournament.  Are these reasons similar to why you have the view you do?

Brad I know who you are, and in real life you definitely come across as a Rico Suave type.

I don't want to get into this too much. I just think Oath has too many dead draws, and it is too easy to hate out.

When you beat me with Oath in Philly, I had specifically decided to ignore Oath in my deck building and knew the match was going to be difficult.  Making the adjustments to make me feel really good about the Oath matchup is not hard to do.  I can't say that about a lot of other decks.

This was my first vintage event ever, and It was run super smoothly. I went 3-3 after a rough start, and a ton of play errors, and came in 22nd. I had a fantastic time, learned alot, and met a ton of cool people.

keep running these, great time!

This was my second vintage event.  I had a lot of fun just wished i fared better than 3 wins 3 loses.  I look forward to improving and playing on in the world of vintage.  I've only been at the game of magic for just over a year and i enjoy playing with and against all of these veterans who i can learn from and hopefully someday beat. Thanks Nick for the event i look forward to coming to more of your events.
