It's back, like you've never seen it before.

Expanded.

More top 8s.  More tagging, more analysis:  by tournament size, by geographic region.

More Decks.

Tournament winning decks from around the world.

Way more decks.

Oh yeah, and: its FREE!

The Q4 Vintage Metagame Report.  Set a half hour aside, and enjoy:

Matt was hyping this article all weekend, and I was not disappointed!  Fascinating stuff man.  This really ought to be premium content -- anyone who doesn't read this article is going to be at a big disadvantage over the next few months.

Pleasepleasepleasepleasepleas e continue doing this kind of metagame analysis, the article more than made my day!

The only thing I would change is the formatting, it would be easier to view if you put the metagame percentages of the US and Europe right next to each other horizontally, with the percentage difference added. Same thing with small and big tournaments.

Starting with the next Metagame Report, it would be nice if you could include a graph that highlights the popularity of an archetype over time (I think Menendian did this in the past, I found it very useful).

Again, thank you for the pure awesomeness in article form!

Absolutely amazing! I printed this off and went over it twice at work which equates to an excellent day at the office.

That was an amazing article, Matt. Both the EU/US split as well as the inclusion of smaller tournaments were interesting additions as far as content goes.

Including a couple graphs in future iterations would be nice.

I really appreciate all the work that goes into this, thanks Matt.

Probably another three months are needed to expect full maturation of Gush strategies, but at this stage it looks like the unrestriction of Gush has had the desired effect: adding another pillar to the metagame without obsoleting an existing pillar.  As hypothesized by several members during discussions on TMD before its unrestriction, Gush has not (yet, perhaps) proven to be dominant without the support structure of 4x Brainstorm and 4x Merchant Scroll.  Hopefully this test case will continue to create evidence that previously dangerous combinations of cards are not necessarily each dangerous alone.

Again, it would require continued balance of the meta for some time, but provided that I would hope to see another experimental unrestriction in June of this year.  This argument is also contingent on the sets to be released between now and June not containing another format-defining card like Lodestone Golem or Jace, the Mind Sculptor, which could easily shake things up without DCI intervention.

I'm interested what peoples' take is on differences between 'Overall %' and 'Winner %', it seems to me like the differences arise from a combination of factors including: small sample size (matchup dependent outcomes), degree to which a deck rewards player skill, and deck 'power'.

Vintage is a lovely format, it's too bad so few people can play because the supply of power is so small.

Chess really changed when they decided to stop making Queens and Bishops.  I'm just glad I got my copies before the prices went crazy.

I will include a trend line graph for key archetypes in the next report.

Seconded! Great stuff, thank you!!

Indeed:
  • putting relevant stuff next to each other makes it easier to compare
  • I'm a fan of putting results in graphical form, it makes it easier to read
  • I loved Steve's popularity of archetypes graphs.

I didn't want to compare to Stevens data as the selection criteria was not the same but I will track against my own. I hope you all saw that the full excel sheet can be downloaded thru the article and makes data comparison a snap. That is a powerful and free tool!

With excel you can auto-graph highlighted data by hitting F11. But yes - I will make an effort to include more visual / graph elements in the next one.

Thank you for doing this.  I haven't had much time to look through everything, but I will.  So far, I'm a big fan of the expanded coverage to include all tournaments with a T8 cut.  I'm hopeful that this will help promote Vintage in areas that don't get a lot of coverage because their tournaments don't reach the six-round cutoff (like Richmond, VA).

Matt,

Great work.  I'm glad that you decided to pick up this project, and it sounds like from the positive response you'll continue to do this, which is a great boon to the community.

As you continue to do this, I imagine you'll refine the process towards improvement.  You'll find new measures you think will provide insight and better ways to represent data.

Just one note: the reason I chose 33 players as the cutoff wasn't because I was concerned that a player with only 5 wins could make the finals.   I would be comfortable with that data point.

My concern was that a player with only 3 wins would become a data point at all.  In other words, I was concerned that a player with only 3 wins would make 8th place, and thus become part of the overall % of top 8s.   With 33+ players as the cut off, every single data point represented at least 4 wins.

That said, this was great, and I think it just shows how awesome/diverse Vintage is right now.

I think this was the best article I've read of yours, Matt.  I felt that the data presented was not only useful but your analysis was very insightful.  I liked the way you broke it down by archtype and by "Europe vs the US" where some different tournament rules obviously affect metagame.  Nice work.

Thanks guys.  If you feel strongly about this article, write SCG and let them know!

Steve, thanks for the feedback.  While I always appreciated the fact that these articles had a positive effect on Vintage in multiple ways, I didn't fully appreciate how long they took to do.  Thank you for doing them for such a long period of time.
