N.Y.S.E. XVI – 6/11 Lotus Tournament

Summer’s in the air, and so is another N.Y.S.E. Lotus tournament…

When:

Saturday, June 11th, 2011
Registration will begin at 11:00 AM
First round will begin promptly at 12:00 PM

What:

$30, 15 proxy non-sanctioned Vintage tournament. Deck registration sheets will be in use. First place prize of an Unlimited Black Lotus is guaranteed. All additional prizes are guaranteed at 50 entrants.

The prize structure will be as follows:

1st: Unlimited Black Lotus
2nd: $250 dealer credit
3rd/4th: $100 dealer credit
5th/8th: $40 dealer credit
9th: Mystery Prize, to be autographed by the top 8

As always, prizes will be scaled up with attendance.

The price on Unlimited Lotuses has slowly been working its way up.  Check this out:

http://completed.shop.ebay.com/i.html?rt=nc&LH_Complete=1&_nkw=mtg%20unlimited%20black%20lotus&_fln=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m283&_rdc=1

As always, if you have spare power, please get in touch with me at the event and let me know what you’re looking for on it.  Maybe it’s the boom in Legacy, maybe it’s just a natural cycle, but there seems to be less and less power floating around.

Side Events/Player of the Year Race:

Side Events:

There will be a side event that will start taking sign-ups after the second round of the main flight. As soon as we have 12 players the event will be held. If there's enough demand for it, there will be an additional side event held after the final round of the main flight as soon as we have the 12th sign-up. Entry for the side event is $10. It will be four rounds of single elimination.

Non sanctioned Scars of Mirrodin drafts will be available throughout the day, beginning after the second round of the event.

Player of the Year Race:

Starting on 1/8 there will be a Player of the Year race. Points will be accumulated based on match wins (3 points) and draws (1 point.) The event will run from 1/8/11 - 12/31/11. The winner of the race wins free admission to all N.Y.S.E. tournaments for 2012. Updates will be posted in the tournament reports for the tournaments.

The point structure will be as follows:

1st: 12 points
2nd: 9 points
3rd: 6 points
4th: 6 points
5th: 3 points
6th: 3 points
7th: 3 points
8th: 3 points

May the best player win!

I messaged Forcethewill asking if there was a NYSE this month and he told me "no, but the next one is prob a lotus"  This should be a good event to kick off the summer season - looks awesome. I def have to come and try to maintain my Player of the Year bid.

Nick Detwiler created the doc: "N.Y.S.E. XV Tournament Report"

First off, I’d like to thank all 46 players that made the trip out to Brothers Grim yesterday to play some Vintage on Long Island.  In the end Paul Mastriano won it all, taking down Shawn Anthony in the finals.

The Black Lotus that Paul won has some history to it as well – as it is the Black Lotus that Sam Berse won at the second Grudge Match, and the Lotus that I won by beating Paul in the finals of the Dan Herd tournament.

Complete Metagame Breakdown

Mana Drains/Force of Wills:

Turbo Tezz: 5

Golden Gun Oath: 1

Bob Control: 1

Empty Gush: 2

Tendrils Gush: 1

GAT: 1

Iona Oath: 1

Minus Six: 2

Meandeck Tezz Vault: 3

Jace Storm: 2

DeMars Control: 1

Grixis Control: 1

Painter/Grindstone: 1

Workshops:

Espresso Stax: 4

Panther Shops: 1

Precursor MUD: 1

Winter Orb Stax: 1

MUD Prison: 1

Metalworker MUD: 1

Hellkite MUD: 1

Affinity: 1

Bazaars:

Dredge: 4

Null Rods:

Noble Fish: 4

U/R/G/ Haterade: 1

Dark Rituals:

TPS: 1

Forino Sui Black: 1

U/B Belcher: 1

Replenish Combo: 1 (there are no Rituals in this list, but it’s filed under the combo pillar)

For a while it looked as though we had begun to see some definition within the blue decks, with DeMars Control variants and various Gush Storm decks claiming the top two seeds within the pillar.  Yesterday’s tournament showed that may not be the case, as Turbo Tezz outnumbered any other blue deck in the field.  The rest of the field remained relatively open as we did not see an oppressive presence of any given deck in the field.

Top 8 Pairings and Results:

Paul Mastriano vs. Jared Leshen – Mastriano wins

Mikey Noble vs. David Third – Noble wins

Ryan Glackin vs. Jack Impink – Glackin wins

Shawn Anthony vs. Will Magrann – Anthony wins

Top 4 Pairings and Results:

Paul Mastriano vs. Mikey Noble – Mastriano wins

Shawn Anthony vs. Ryan Glackin – Anthony wins

Finals:

Paul Mastriano vs. Shawn Anthony – Mastriano wins

My sincere congratulations to Paul Mastriano, Shawn Anthony, and all of my top 8 competitors!

The winner of over 150 Predatory Urges was Matt Pate!  Congratulations Matt!

Player of the Year Race:

The Player of the Year Race standings will be updated tonight, and should be available either later tonight, or tomorrow (at the latest.)  My apologies on the delay for updating the standings.

In Conclusion:

My sincere thanks to Gil, Dave, Frank, and all of the Brothers Grim staff.  You’re the reason why your store is the best on Long Island.  My thanks to Nick Coss, dealer extraordinaire, to Brian Paskoff, the best judge I know, and last but by no means least, to all my competitors.  You are what keeps Vintage alive.

Tournament announcements for events in July and August should be up soon.  Keep your eyes peeled, and I hope to see you all at N.Y.S.E. XVI!

It was a blast playing with you guys.  congrats to all the other winners.

I got to play against so many different decks every round was different. i played:

MUD (win) Dredge (win) Red Shop (lose) Grow (win) Oath (T8) UGW Fish with Mental Misstep(T4) and Gush Combo (final)

So whoever says Vintage doesn't have very a diverse meta is way off base.

The finals vs Shawn was epic - The last few turns of game 3 went like this:

Shawn had out Jace TMS and plays Mystical tutor for Yawg Will and draws it up with Jace's Brainstorm ability.  I sit there with a board full of permanents, Confidant, Top but pretty much tapped out.  I'm holding a couple black tutors and have Mystic remora in play, so i had been drawing a couple cards off the stuff Shawn was playing.

I couldnt counter Yawg Will and he had a pretty juicy graveyard.  I was pretty sure I was dead. The first order of business was to REB my Remora.  I drew one last card and he proceeded to Gush and  Acall and all sorts of stuff.

Then he played Mox Emerald, and tapped it.  The only spell i could think of that he could have for one green was Fastbond -  i was so dead.

But it wasn't Fastbond.  It was Sensei's Top!  He spun it, put the cards back, discarded 3 and passed the turn.

I untapped to a billion mana, spun my top, found Time Walk and Gifts ungiven.  Plus I had those tutors.  With 2 turns to work with I was easily able to assemble a deadly Key+vault combination.  The rest of the turns were mine.

Thanks to Nick D for assembling a good show, and Nick C for providing secondary prizes.  Good luck catching me for player of the year here now!

You definitely had a really good counter strategy with those Remoras and that Mindbreak Trap on my Empty the Warrens was wowza!  It was pretty fun that the advantage was going back and forth but once the game got to a certain point its really hard to come back through your Confidant advantage.  But since we already split I was playing pretty loose and I'm looking forward to a rematch someday.

I can't believe I survived the Stax matchup 4 times against solid opponents; I definitely got a little lucky there in addition to having a really good sideboard plan.

@my sideboard -- only 1 Jailer and only 1 Grudge

Reposted from Nick Detwiler:

Gents,

One of my guys had a Beta Lotus go missing at the last N.Y.S.E. event, and has just realized that it was gone. If you saw anything shady, or know of anyone who magically had one pop into a binder of theirs, please, LET ME KNOW.

This is the Lotus in question:
