So 3 of my friends and I go to the store thinking we were going to be the only non-scrub like last time we went. God were we wrong. The tournament consisted of 11 people. Five scrubs playing random scrub decks, 1 ww, 1 Goblin-Sligh, 1 Gro, 1 Burn,1 Worldgorger(me ), and (the most unexpected deck there)a FULLY POWERED blue control deck( I believe he said it was O.S.E., but I'm not too familiar with blue control decks in Type 1). I didn't know about the powered deck. I just thought he was another scrub, at first. Anywho, the pairings for the first round were as follows:
WW vs. Burn Scrub vs. Scrub Scrub vs. Goblin Sligh Scrub vs. Gro Scrub vs. Blue Control I get the bye, wahoo!!!
I figured this would give me time to check out the metagame, as I didn't know what my friend was playing(ended up being gro, no big deal). I was just walking around, and I get to the end of the table and see the guy with the powered deck. I just glance, and see a mox on the table. Of course, I am amazed as no one with power ever plays here. I start watching him play. He drops power card after power card. At about this time, I start to reconcile with God, and ask him to please not let me face him next round. He wins and they announce pairings for second round(it's single elimination):
burn vs. scrub gro vs. Goblin Sligh Me vs. Blue Control
Ouch.....horrible horrible irony, I get the bye, but get stuck with him.
I take a deep breath and just prepare to lose, as my deck is the most non-optimal deck. Anywho, here's the list:
Scrubby Dragon.dec
4 Worldgorger Dragon 4 Entomb 3 Buried Alive 4 Animate Dead 1 Dance of the Dead 4 Dark Ritual 1 Sol Ring 2 Diabolic Edict 1 Demonic Tutor 1 Diabolic Tutor(I couldn't get a hold of a vampiric in time) 2 Magma Mine 2 Grindstone 1 Millstone 1 Telim Tor's Darts(pure comedy, losing to this hurts) 4 Duress 4 Hymn to Tourach 1 Nevinyrral's Disk 1 Phantom Nishoba(alternate win condition) 19 Swamps
I win the die roll and chose to play(BIG MISTAKE). I draw: Grindstone, Duress, Animate Dead, Worldgorger, Ritual, 2 swamps
Not a bad hand, I could go off on turn two with this hand(had I drawn instead of played). Anyways, here's how it goes. Turn one: Swamp, Duress. His hand consists of Ancestall Recall, Library of Alexandria, Morphling, Chainer's Edict, and land. Ancestral Recall goes to his graveyard, his turn he drops the Library and passes. I drop a Swamp and Grindstone, go. He draws, then draws from Library, drops a land and passes. I draw, luckily, an entomb, entomb worlgorger, pass. He drops another land, passes. I draw and drop a swamp, attempt to animate the worlgorger, and he mana drains it. Next turn he drops a Sol Ring and morphling. I attempt to Edict it next turn, which he counters, and he wins.
Game 2:
Learning from my mistake, I chose to draw this game. My starting hand was: Worldgorger, Magma Mine, Hymn, Dance of the Dead, 3 Swamps. Turn 1, he Drops Library, passes. I draw, then discard worldgorger and he's up. He draws, then draws from library, and drops a land. I drop a swamp and a magma mine. He draws, and doesn't do anything. I draw, drop a swamp, and animate the worldgorger. He brainstorms in response, but doesn's draw and answer.
Game 3: Blah, I try to animate Worldgorger 3 times, they all are countered, I lose via morphling.
It end up being him vs. Burn, with Goblin Sligh getting the bye. He crushes burn, and him and Goblin Sligh split the prize. I kick myself in the ass now, because if I choses to draw 1st game I would have gone off 2nd turn and he had no counters. Oh well, I need to greatly improve this deck(i.e. More win conditions, Defense Grids possibly, and deinately Cabal Therapies.) I must now go and sleep more before going to play this game we all love some more. Adios.
