Not only are the prizes super awesome (not that I really care about prizes, I only really went to the double lotus because I wanted the trophy), but there's a breakfast buffet held in the Marriot before the tournament with a mullet station, a make-your-own-waffles station and infinite O.J. and danishes. Yes, danishes. INFINITE DANISHES!!!    /me grabs a tissue

Y'all better show. This is like what people were expecting out of Stokinger, except with more prizes, a real round two, a TO that's paying attention, and a higher attendance.

Wait, isn't your dopeness factor negative? :< Volume can't be negative. However, I don't remember enough about calculus to rely on my skills to calculate the given volume without looking anything up about shell/washer methods. :)

It's just a triple integral IIRC, and while obviously volume can't be negative the integral gives a negative value. It could be ABS(triple integral), but I'm pretty sure it's just the basic multivariable calculus.

You have inspired me to look up volume calculus. (CURSE YOU!) And I don't think I ever want to hear anyone suggest a triple integral again. http://archives.math.utk.edu/visual.calculus/5/volumes.6/2(pi) {Integral:[-2,2]} x (x^2 + 4) dx = 2(pi) {(x^4)/4 + (2x^2)} [-2,2] = 2(pi) {4+8-(4+8)} Unless I'm doin' it wrong, that's zero. Was that the intent?

Aaaah...you guys and your sloppy math.
The function is f(x) = -x^2 + 4...you forgot the negative...that means... Using the method of cylindrical shells the volume is 2pi*INTEGRAL FROM 0 to 2 of (-x^2 + 4)*x dx 2pi*INTEGRAL FROM 0 to 2 of (-x^3 + 4x) dx =2pi*[-x^4/4+2x^2] evaluated from 0 to 2 =2pi*(-4+8) = 8pi

My algebra teacher would be so disappointed in me.
Wouldn't it have been inherently geekier to make it 6pi, since six is a perfect number? :)

Real people do it in different coordinate systems and with multiple integrals. I probably just didn't do the coordinates right.

No, Phelon... see, you play Magic, so you are a nerd. They are doing recreational mathematics (sans Ray, cuz he's a teacher and all) while being magic players, so they are simply nerdier than you. Just wanted to make that clear.
Also, what was the point of this thread again?

So we can whip it out and see who's the nerdiest. I consider myself the inevitable winner of any such contest, though I suppose if there were someone who could best me, this would be the place to find him.

You'll need to define "nerd," because for instance I tend to score really well on like online nerdity tests despite the fact that I am in a non-techncial major and I don't like programming.

I'm polisci and don't like programming either. I think we can go with the definition of nerd as someone who does things well outside the social norm, most often with a connotation of social n00bishness (at least earlier in life if not consistently). Such as Magic.
