40-42? In that case I must ask if the prize was a Black Lotus or higher, so I can invoke 'condition two' for getting into the June report, kinda like the NJ Lotus tourney last week. :P

Yes, a Lotus was given for first.

I believe a Mox Sapphire was given for second, but I'm not certain.  I do know it was a mox though.

Other prizes included a Library and a signed Juzam.

The Charleston contingent placed 5 players in the top 16, two of which were in the top 8. Smile

I may have to give a full length tourney report for this one because finals at applebee's is just too AWSUM for me to not write about.

Additionally, the concentration of truly good vintage players was very high.  There were only 43 players as I recall and obviously I've been to larger tournaments before, but not since gencon have I been to a tournament with so many names I have recognized.  It was a very competitive field extremely dense with type 1 experts; Charlston, Meandeck and Shortbus all represented.  LOTS of very high level characters Smile

Indeed.  It was highly competitive.  I was X-0-1 and first seed going into the top 8 and lost in the top 8 to eigth seed PTW.  (Big Frowns).

On the day I lost three games until playing Marc (one from the swiss and two in the trial).

I won the trial in the morning (four rounds) to get two bye's in the main event.  And then I played 3 rounds and drew in round 6 to be X-0-1.  I didn't get to draw in round 5 becuase there was no one else at 4-0 and so my opponent refused to draw with me.

My teammates got taken down by the gay Fishies as well.   Marc played very well and I had a great time.  I will have my revenge though.  Watch your back.

Just a few notes:

The Tournament organizer told me that something like 10-20 different carloads of people got turned away from the site because some schmuck at the front gate didnt know a magic tournament was going on... so turnout should have been significantly higher (if even half of those people were there for the T1)

The Type 1 had as many players as the main event.

As PTW mentioned, I dont know if I've seen so many upper level players since GENCON.  you couldnt swing a psychatog without hitting a TMD'r or other veteran. I think this bodes very well for the SCG tournament.

Metagame Notes:

Psychatog was everywhere. By Smmemen's count there were 14 in the field of 42, and I think that may have been low... and definetly didnt include the GAT builds.   The last round though the Gay R and 7/10's were surrounded by Psychatogs. it could easily have been a 5 tog top8.

Hill Redwine finished 9th with an updated Stax.  My opponents for the day were:

Gay/r (W)
Hulk - CHAIN5 (W)
Hulk - (W)
Gay/r - PTW (ID)
7/10 variant (L)
Keeper - (W)

Top8 -  Hulk from round 3 (L)

Thats garbage. I think a stipulation of winning is the fact that your list is going to be published.  Hell, you've already won a major tourney with it and all the participants have seen it, why continue trying to keep up the secret?

If they put 3 or 4 Pro Tour's in the same 2 month period using the same format for all of them, I bet you would see more people trying to get their decklists withheld.

As it stands, there are several major tournaments scheduled for the summer:  SCG, Origins, GENCON.

Its not like anyone played any new deck archetypes (except hte mindslicer suicde decks that didnt top8).  And furthermore its not like anyone, even a winner, owes anybody these decklists. Some people publish them, others dont.   Their creators are the ones who put the effort into it and if they dont feel like spreading their ideas, thats their business.

What was there and what did well is known, and frankly thats the important stuff.. does it make any difference if the Gay/R decks used In the Eye of Chaos as their secret board tech?  Any major innovation would have leaked already because so many people were there...  so instead of bitching over decklists that nobody owes you, take the metagame knowledge and apply it to your next tournament build.

Wow, Smmenen, I thought you were the only one holding this view. I'm stunned.

SliverKing, if there's no tech on the line, why try to withhold the lists? If it doesn't do anybody any good to know whether some minor variation was made, then what's the harm in letting me make tables to entertain the masses weeks or months from now?

More importantly, this particular tournament is right before one of the regular upheavals of the format: a new set. All of the lists will by nature not reflect the post-5D metagame, which may or may not have some shifts in what archetypes are played--GAT comes to mind. Anyone who netdecked from this tournament and didn't put in their own playtesting time would be clearly disadvantaged. So I see no reason why someone would make a big secret out of these lists, even moreso than my ordinary belief in the meager gains to be had from this type of secrecy.

I'm in the camp that says witholding decklists is just wrong.  Type One is the only format people are allowed to do this, and I don't think it should be allowed to continue.

Withholding of decklists is done in other formats, don't fool yourself.  While the metagame is likely to change somewhat, and as such some decks may be obsolete etc, it is completely a person's perogative if they choose to release their decklists.  As SliverKing's teammate, I fully support his position for the reasons he listed.  In time the decklist will come out and strategy articles/threads will be written, but with the volume of prestigious tournaments on the horizon (Origins, SCG, GenCon) that TSB members will be attending, it is in our best interest that we don't reveal this information.

In short I am saying it is my opinion that the short term interests of the team are more important than the vintage communities need for decklists.  There are Loti, Moxen, and Trophies to be won.

So your opinion is that the interests of 5-10 people are more important than the interests of the Vintage community at large?

In addition, Wizards publishes decklists from most large tournaments.  I go to the page of past tournament coverage (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=sideboard/coverage), and I can see an assortment of decklists from each Pro Tour, Nationals, Invitational, Grand Prix, and Worlds (including, of course, the Top 8 lists).  In fact, it seems the only formats Wizards doesn't publish decklists for are the ones that don't receive large-scale support from the company (Types 1.5 and 1).    So I guess what you really meant by "other formats" was "Type 1.5,"  unless, of course, you want to say FNM is analogous to the Central Coast Championship.  Even then, it's hard to say that some decklists are "being withheld" when they really just aren't publishing any in the first place.

In my opinion I would say my interest in the performance TSB is more important to me than the interests of others.  Do your own deck development and research, don't rely upon Short Bus, Mean Deck, Hadley, the French, Dutch, etc for new tech, you can do it yourself.

I am interested to see Smmenen's thread on this topic when it comes up.

I think most people are really just curious as to what the top 8 looked like and played out, without having to piece it together from 16 different posts....it sounds like it was Hulk, Gay/r, and 7/10, but if someone could clarify what the top 8 looked like, I think most people would be happy.

I find it absolutely fascinating that Fish pwned the two most successful other decks in the tournament THOROUGHLY and CONVINCINGLY.  The fact that each fish deck had to beat Two Togs and Two 7/10s is just ridiculous.

If Fish can make top 8 - I think it is VERY difficult to beat.

I am the Tog deck at the top of that list.

The other Tog was AJ Fields from Charleston.

The "7/10" deck he played against was Squeak, also from Charleston, although I wouldn't really call it 7/10 (unless he changed it when I wasn't looking).

Squeak's deck is definetly a variant, really a blend of several decks, but it fit most neatly into the 7/10 category (welder, thirsts, workshops, fatties).  That it had so many other card choices is really not relevent. Since half this thread was about NOT revealing decks, I figured that if he wanted to talk about his variations he would.... but for purposes of which deck-types beat which decktypes (as dante asked for)... it was ok to just lump it into the 7/10 category.

On a side note I agree with Smmemen. when Fish makes top8, its in great shape... actually when fish gets past round 3 its in great shape.  its those early rounds with decks that actually use creatures that fish can wither and die.  Marc and I were discussing it on the way home and we decided that fish beat togs,  but Ernham Djinn rolled it....

Fish is most definately a clear threat.  The majority of all of our testing was to beat the Fish matchup, and we still kept running into problems. Razz

Still working on it though.
