I'm weary about black having life-gain.
A megrim-like ability is better anyway. Do that. That'd put me to ease and make it a better card. C'mon. Appease me.
Do the drain life thing and call him Megrim El-Hajjai, Preacher of Madness. *grins*
C'mon. The drain life thing is cool. And he'd be great in suicide black then. He'd be phenominal. And it'd only be for ONE MORE MANA.

Black has friggin' tons of life gain. All the counter-arguements so far hold absolutely no validity.
In the current Standard environment, Black currently has these cards for life gain:
Cabal Archon
Consume Spirit
Dross Harvester
Essence Drain
Profane Prayers
Sever Soul
Soul Feast
Syphon Soul
Tendrils of Agony
Vicious Hunger
As Jebus has pointed out, Black gain's life by draining it from other sources. Not only from other player's (Soul Feast, Syphon Soul), but from creature's as well (Cabal Archon, Sever Soul, Vicious Hunger, etc.)
So, with that in mind, the card should either focus on player's or creature's. Black has no business in gaining life from discarded sorceries, instants, etc., imho at least.
If I may make a suggestion, I'd say that something like this would be more in line with Black's flavour:
Whenever an opponent discard's a creature card from his or her hand, you may gain life equal to that card's converted mana cost.

To me this card is balanced, in flavour and in colour. You grow stronger due to the suffering of others. I just can't see the argument here.
Black has always had this sort of ability and probably always will.

Well, I've been partially swayed by the arguments of those who think that this card is too white in flavour. Looking at cards like Spirit Cairn and Astral Slide, it isn't right to claim that only black can benefit from discarding. Granted, this limits the discard to the opponent, but I'm going to suggest some other ideas for consideration, anyhow. Whenever an opponent discards a card, you may pay  . If you do, that player loses 2 life and you gain 2 life. OR Whenever an opponent discards a card, you may pay {B}. If you do, that player loses 3 life and you gain 3 life. OR Whenever an opponent discards a card, you may discard a card. If you do, that player loses 3 life and you gain 3 life. |
