So let's say that hypothetically I were putting together an application to track your deck's pimpness. How would people rate the pimpness of the various lands? I'm curious to see if there is a strong consensus or if it's really a matter of personal preference.

I suppose mine might go something like this... I can't even really decide.

Guru
APAC
Euro
Arena
Urza's Saga Foil
Unglued
Alpha
Beta
...

Guru is by far the best, followed by Unglued. The rest are all so much worse than those two that it doesn't even matter.

What about those anime lands that someone(can't remember who) made?

I wasn't counting those, because Jeff has like the only ones ever. Plus, those vary in quality from land to land--the island isn't great, but the swamp is amazing.

Shouldn't an objective pimping program rate by quantitative rarity? Unglued would lose out majorly based on that.

But when you compare the number of Unglued style lands to the number of "regular" lands, Unglued totally wins. All the other non-guru lands are essentially variants of each other, so collectively they're much less interesting than Unglued lands are.

I've tried poking around for print runs and came up with nothing conclusive. I wouldn't have a clue how to estimate how many APAC land packs were distributed, for example. This problem covers the whole board, not only lands, since I'm including the different languages and printings. I mean, if I were actually working on this.  Cool

Edit: FWIW, I personally love Unglued lands and I rate them much higher on that list, probably second after Guru, like Jacob. I just wanted to spur discussion.

I think Eurolands are pretty high on the list myself.  Gurus are the best by far however.  Though for some reason unglued lands just don't do it for me.

Asian Beta works for me.  Guru is for rich people and Unglued is ghey.

The real money is the Foil 4th Edition lands, particularly the basic Islands.

http://www.magiclibrary.net/rarities-arena-2001.html

They were given out as arena prizes, as well as the occasional FNM extra stuffs.  Some of the Ice Age ones are pretty cool, but the 4th ed Island is money.

Foiling land is VERY VERY BAD.  It's easy to want to include foil land since they're easy to get ahold of, but when you have a deck where like all your land are foiled and only a couple other random cards are (espescially if it's stuff like Brainstorm) you have a savagely marked deck which can easily get you DQ'ed from a tourney.

Okay, what I was calling Arena lands you call 4th Ed. foils. Done and done.

Man, I wish I could get a hold of print run info so I could bring a little objectivity into it. I'm tempted to allow users to set up their own pimpness ranking order, but then people could just pick Revised everything and get 100% pimped certification. Revised is clearly not pimped. Clearly.

Signed revised/unlimited by cool people.  Sometimes I like to draw on my basic lands from the big box.

That, or beat revised Islands.  I find it much more satisfying to beat someone with cheap, non-pimp cards.  It's like going to your opponent's homecoming and schooling the hell out of them.  That's pimp.

I prefer Unglued, myself. I'm still undecided as to whether I'd rather have them or Guru. Though probably Guru.

But the term "Arena" lands is sort of misleading. With 3 versions of the mural theme, the Saga foils, the Ice Age foils, and the 4th foils, it gets pretty hard to know which lands in particular someone means.

Since this thread is about lands, I was referring to basic land Smile.  The first Arena Lands were non foil.

If you're referring to the set by Tony Roberts, that was already included in my list. Yes, I'm very well aware that you were referring to basic land. However, you'll note that this topic is about the varying kinds, so it would have been at least courteous to specify which.

The guru lands are the topmost by a wide margin. Nothing even comes close.

I'm big on the Unglued land and Guru's are solid, but I like revised lands too. Granted anythin revised rocks, I've even got the pimped out T tap symbols on my proxies. I think I should win tournaments just for that.

Guru is insane.

I myself prefer (and use) jpn signed lands, or urza's saga foils.

Saga foiled lands are definitely the best looking, since they correctly picked the best looking basics for each one. All of the basics except forests were drawn extremely well for Saga. Beautifully illustrated + foiled + from Saga = "pimp."

Is there anyone who disagrees that Guru lands are not at the top of the list?

and if so, how can this be?

Rare, expensive, hard to find, mural form, great pictures ect...

urza's foils, unglued...yea, pretty good I suppose.

but better then Guru?!?
