Not yet mentioned:

Kelly's Heroes
Blues Brothers
Indiana Jones trilogie
Beverly Hills Cop 3 ( I know it is a bad movie, but I've seen too many times not to list)

Already mentioned:

Snatch
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Pulp Fiction
Lord of the Rings trilogie
Starwars 4,5 and 6
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Monthy Python and the Holy Grail

Btw I can't believe ppl actually like Croucing Tiger, Hidden Dragon.  Confused The plot was terrible, the acting was horrible and the special effects where soooo bad it doesn't make sense to me why anyone would list it.  (just my opinion ofcourse)

I've been keeping a list of every movie I've ever seen for the past few years, and adding any movie that I saw before I started keeping the list as I remember them, so I narrowed this down from them.

A good way to do this is to vote on IMDb every time you see a moive.  That makes up a list automatically for you and then lets you categorize them in different ways.

Contact is a great movie if you're interested in sci-fi based movies.  Predator and Alien are up there also.  I'm suprised I didn't see it on anyone's list but a Beautiful Mind has to be one of the best movies portraying mental illness in an individual i've ever seen.

Lost Highway is just weird for no apparant reason.

The story of Lost Highway is simple enough. It's about a guy who kills his wife because he thinks she's cheating on him; then he ends up in jail and has a nervous/schizophrenic breakdown and then constructs an alternate reality for himself (Balthazar Getty); but the character (Pullman) is so broken in the head that even his fantasies turn to shit and become nightmares. Perfectly comprehensible. Smile

As for sci-fi, I agree with Dr. Sylvan, The Empire Strikes Back is the best of the lot. It's still good every time I see it. I can't say that for most of the movies that are made.

Yes. For those interested, this site offers the best explanation I've read to date.

The Usual Suspects and Equilibrium have both only been mentioned once each - definitely deserve another.

Also:
Rounders
The Matrix
The Rock
Anything Monty Python
Fight Club
Kill Bill
Pulp Fiction
Face/Off
Red Dragon
Both Shrek films (just because Eddie Murphy is SO FUNNY in them)
Rush Hour
The Shawshank Redemption
Ocean's Eleven (the new version)

...and plenty of others that I really can't remember at the moment.

Lists are fun so I shall chime in.

Million Dollar Baby- I saw this about one month ago and must say that it is one of the best movies I have ever seen.  Masterpiece.
Gettysburg (Pickett's Charge is probably my favorite scene from any movie. Armistead's dialogues are timeless)
Saving Private Ryan
Shakespeare In Love
Sideways
This should serve as a blueprint for future comedies.
Death of a Salesman
A Christmas Story
(Family tradition to watch this at least once around the holidays)

I would include Apocalypse Now if it wasnt a totally unoriginal film.  But I enjoyed Heart of Darkness and therefore enjoyed the film.

Wow, it only showed up once...

The Boondock Saints

Also, my 2nd favorite movie has got to be Versus, a Japanese Import from 1999. It's got the Choreographer from The Matrix doing the kung-fu planning, and it has Zombies. What more could you ask for?

I suggest everyone here go see both very soon.

Monty Python (and everything they've ever done)
Ocean's Eleven
Rounders (standard)
Both Kill Bills
All of the Clusterfuck British Movies (Snatch, Lock Stock, etc)
The Transporter
Full Metal Jacket (Private Pyle!)
A Christmas Story
The Rundown (Suprisingly good movie w/ The Rock)
Walking Tall (see above)
The full Evil Dead Trilogy
The Full LOTR trilogy

I know I'm missing some, but oh well.

In no particular order:

Nightmare before Christmas
Natural Born Killers
Goodfellas
Scarface
Jackie Brown
Resevoir Dogs
Pulp Fiction
Casino
Donnie Brasco
Secret Window (great ending)
Jeepers Creepers

Anime:

Cowboy Bebop
08th MS Team
End of Eva (I don't like the series but this movie is so screwed up)

I think I am the only person I know who hates Princess Mononoke...

I do have a thing for the crappy original SciFi channel movies like Sabretooth and Chupacabra: Dark Seas... They suck but are amusing nonetheless.

I haven't seen anything in theaters lately, but I caught about an hour of Cursed when I went to the City Club last night (Bootlegs 4L).  It looked pretty good... the werewolves looked very CG but Christina Ricci rocks my world. I just might go see the rest of that. Elektra was also on a TV there, but it wasn't too good from what I saw.

I won't get into this, because it will cause ranting, but I thought the Butterfly Effect SUCKED. Worst. Movie. Evar.

Dog Soldiers was amusing as hell though.

I'm kinda surprised that neither:

The Patriot (w/ Mel Gibson-not the other one)
Death to Smoochy

were mentioned.

Also, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is hilarious.  Almost as good as the TV series Smile  (I have a probably unhealthy obsession with the show...and a huge boner for Sarah Michelle Gellar)

You haven't hated it until your friend gets back from Japan gushing like a schoolgirl about how awesome it is and hands you a VHS, only to find out it is untranslated and unsubtitled, and when you call him his words of advice are "oh it's ok go download and print out a script lol" and print out about 50 pages of script.  And only then are you "treated" to the movie.

Maybe I'm just bitter though.

Well, a shallower level of analysis would allow us to conclude that Mulholland Drive > Lost Highway; if, for no other reason, than Naomi Watts + Laura Harring >>> Patricia Arquette / Patricia Arquette.

My apologies to Ms. Arquette if she is reading this thread; but the probability of that isn't much greater than me being cast in next seasons' Survivor = Not. Bloody. Likely. Very Happy

I'm just going to reply cause i really think these two should be in the list of the greatests movies ever:

 - Tonari no Totoro (Myazaki at his best, some might know it as "My neighbor Totoro") I really can't begin to understand how this movie was censored in the states  Confused
 - Magnolia P. T. Anderson's Masterpiece and a great portrait of humanity

There's plenty more, but most were talked about before. Smart and artsy movies are my favorite ... If you can watch Northfork too, but take it like a glass of wine.  Appreciate it, don't over rationalize Smile

One of my favorite movies of all time was surprisingly not listed in any prior posts or at least non that I saw. Also a few others I like.

The Cube

Saw
The Village
Falling Down
Fallen
Final Destination
The Relic (Which I haven't been able to find in any video store in a year)
Dawn of the Dead

All good movies in my eyes.

While all these movies sound good... but I have been in the future, and I know that there is one formula you can't fuck with...

The Ultimate Jason Vorhees Movie
Written & Directed by Quintin Tarentino

For the record.... this is not a joke.

BUT-- now onto my real list! The top five movies of all time...

1. Jerry Maguire
2. 13 Going on 30
3. Friday the 13th (SERIES- including the New Line movies).
4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1
5. Rounders

And the WORST MOVIES EVER include...

The Village, Wrong Turn, and AI.

I may be one of a handful of people on the planet that can make this statement: I loved AI. Everyone I know said it sucked, was boring, pretentious, too long, etc., etc., etc. But it was a gorgeously shot film and the story was very cool. I admit, however, that kid (the dude from The Sixth Sense) bugs.

Did anyone else like AI or am I alone in this?

The Village, while kinda inane and forgettable, was another film that's sort of a cinematographic orgy. Really spectacular technically, if otherwise unnecessary film watching. On the whole M. Night subject, I'm surprised no one put The Sixth Sense on their list, that was clever and effective as a creepy psychological thriller. Unbreakable was a good watch too; Signs was horse piss.

If anyone wants to see a truly AWFUL movie, please check out anything by the illustrious Mr. Albert Pyun, who is one of the worst directors I have ever run across. How he still gets work is beyond me, but some really hilarious shit is to be found in movies like:

Mean Guns
Omega Doom
Brainsmasher: A love Story (Starring Andrew Dice Clay!!!!!!! LOL)

These movies are all unintentionally hilarious, and terrible to boot, check out Pyun's track record on IMDB:

AI was so bad it made Gigli (J. Lo + Afflack movie) look good!!! If that stupid kid would just blink 1 time in the movie I wouldnt have been so creeped out by it, and could the movie be any more SLOW and disheartening... I left the theatre depressed after watching it, and people dont play $8+ for a movie to feel depressed.

1) Dark City - probably the only movie in the world I could watch on a continuous loop forever, as disrespectful as that would be.
2) Laurence of Arabia
3) Bonnie and Clyde
4) Life As a House - I strongly identify with the Kevin Cline character
5) Bridge on the River Kwai
6) Doctor Zhivago
7) The Count of Monte Christo
8) His Girl Friday
9) Cold Mountain
10) Citizen Kane - It really is as good as they say only becuase Orson Welles is ridiculously awesome.

Though i'm sure this topic is a thread-killer througout the internet, i have to comment:

Is Empire Strikes Back that good when viewed from the context of multiple viewings.  I love the Hoth scenes and cloud city and whatnot, but everytime i sit down to watch it for whatever-hundredth time, i still find the asteroid and yoda scenes IMMENSELY boring upon multiple viewings.  Give me Star Wars or ROTJ anyday.  Thank god for the skip button, or i would never get through Empires on a late night after clubbing.

jb

Disclaimer:  I'm not saying Empire Strikes Back is a bad movie (it's probably the best of the three), i'm just saying it's the least multi-watchable for me.  Oh yeah, and save the ewok comments.  They might make you cringe as much as Jar-Jar, but the movie still moves ALOT faster.

Oh man, this is soooo my question to field. (See this post for precedent of me tangentializing a thread for the sake of my opinions.)

I find TESB to be immensely rewatchable. This morning when I was watching the trailer for Episode III, the thing I noticed most was how many different scenes it promised with short excerpts. It has the potential to have by far the highest density of material of all six movies. When it comes to density, TESB is the current leader of the five released movies, and I think that's what makes it the popular favorite. Density is my term for the quantity of scenes that develop characters in advance of the plot movements that are swirling around them. The Yoda scenes that you don't care for, I totally love. The Hoth segment is my least favorite part of Empire (though it was not always so). When Lando goes to the cell on Cloud City, that is a dense scene: it is setting up what will happen later, with no real indication that the later events are inevitable. (BTW, Babylon 5 is a great show to watch if you enjoy this type of development as I do.)

The reason TPM felt so light-weight was that the characters did not really get any of these scenes. Liam Neeson's best acting opportunity was crushed by the midichlorian plot device disaster. AotC had more of these scenes, but the specific lines blunted the effect. ANH suffers from being the first film, so it couldn't spend time setting up things explicitly, because loose ends would annoy an uninitiated audience. RotJ is, as you say, faster-paced, but to me that makes it less dense, more like an action movie. (Also, learning about Leia totally doesn't fit into the male-centric world the saga portrays, plus, nothing comes of it---it doesn't make a difference for her character.) In contrast, TESB has the advantages of being able to explicitly set things up for the future, and have the climax of the movie be a development scene for Luke. (Anakin's swashbuckling in the end of AotC is also a development scene, not a closure scene.)

Oh, and obviously I agree on the asteroid. Totally pointless, no development, etc. Nothing's perfect; there are scenes in any of the movies that I would gladly have dropped. (Can anyone say, "serial puns from C-3PO ruined AotC"?)

JP, this is your cue to tell me that I'm ignorant and should take a film class so that I can use actual jargon instead of invented jargon.
