DAT ART!

« on: September 16, 2005, 02:47:49 pm »

Hot off the press at mtg.com

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=mtgcom/daily/bd193

Looks like every tournament pack will come with a free pro player card.

Ok, this idea is bad.  Really, really bad.

Though I will find it amusing to use about ten of them, add a "I <3 Male Genitalia" speech bubble and use them as tokens.

Just about the best I use I can think for them that does not involve burnination.

Anybody have a different opinion?

This is officially the worst idea WOTC has ever came up with.

Forget Phasing, Forget Memory Jar Pre Restriction, Forget Magic Online.

I wouldnt be surprised to see these trade for less than crap commons.

Why on earth would a Magic Player (99% male) want a picture of Antonio De Rosa making a complete ass of himself.

"What a hunk...OMG he is sooooooooooo dreamy."

If they are trying to glorify professional magic, I think they are heading in the wrong direction.

Oh man.

This is dumb. Like, seriously dumb. The very last thing I need is some large magic player staring up at me from my cards. It's one thing if a guy wins an invitational to be on a card -- and quite another when Wizards starts putting these cracker-jack prize rejects into otherwise fine packs of Magic cards.

Still, not as bad as new card faces.

Maybe if I could open up my very own Toad card, I'd be happy with this. Until then...

Step 1) Find hot female gamers and train them to kick ass at professional magic.
Step 2) Take a lot of pictures of them, not necessarily playing magic.
Step 3) Rake in the profits of selling pictures of hot magic playing girls to lonely geeky magic playing guys.

Machinus, you're making this far too diffult.

I'd say that most folks on TMD would be happy to accomplish just half of Step One.

For some reason these don't bother me. They're pretty pointless, but they don't actively detract from any of the positive aspects of the game. Just throw them away if you get one.

I'll agree that it's probably a dumb move on their part, though.

I want to see cards of famous T1 players.  We're much cuter than pro players.  Also, some of us are just plain funny looking (Kowal, anyone?).  Everyone will get a kick out of a BrassMan one if they use the picture of him with his two thumbs up and that goofy smile. Smile  Also, I want to see one of me with a pose like the Doom on my avatar.  That would be badass.

And totally unintimidating, but I still wholeheartedly endorse the idea.  On the back:

You know what we should do? Everyone from this site, when you get one of these, keep them. Have someone (JDizzle?) collect them all, then send the huge lump of 2000 pro cards to Wizards.

You know, like those people did with AOL cds.

I suppose they make good tokens, for stuff like Goblins and whatnot.

I don't think this is so much a bad idea as a pointless one.  The people at the prereleases aren't the people who care about pro players, and these cards won't make them care.  I expect there will be a lot of these on the floor of the convention center next week after people leave.  Also, Rich is right.  The new card faces are still a much worse idea.  We're now about to have an entire block where most of the cards look like they've been peed on.

Seriously, I'm going to be pissed every single time I open one of these things and have to look at those  bastard's UGLY faces.  Why not include something relevent like, I don't know, tokens, textless cards, or lottery tickets.  Something that isn't a complete waste of paper.

the cards are fine, like WE ALL HATE THEM (including me)

BUT there will be some sap somewhere who excitedly gasps I OPENED ANTONIO DE ROSA!

and if that made his magic experience a little better, so be it. At least there trying new things.

Yeah, but they oughtta try something more than just some lone nut is gonna like. Imagine if they included a token card in every pack, or a textless land like Unhinged, or something similar that had play value! Even if they just included a blank proxy card like in the World Champ gold-bordered decks, that would be better.

Hell a freaking checklist of the set would be better. Inserts aren't a bad idea, but THESE inserts are!

C'mon guys. Give these pro's a break. What's so bad about getting these cards? It's not like they're taking up a rare slot or something...

I know we're not too impressed with the likes of De Rosa, but lots of younger kids are, and kinda look up to them. To WotC, Magic is a way of setting yourself appart, of accomplishing results for kids who would otherwise completely fail at competitive sports etc. If the jocks get their heroes printed on baseball cards, why can't the geeks?

Besides, I think it'd be kinda cool to have a card with me on it. I bet te pro's feel the same way. If I get these, I'm def. not gonna throw them away. Nor am I gonna use them as tokens; I have the far cooler "LEARN TO PLAY"-neopets cards for those. These pro cards will just sit in my binder collecting dust 'till the point where everyone else in the world either set fire to theirs or sent them back to WotC, and then I'll trade them away for multiple Black Loti Smile

Seriously, I don't see what all the fuss is about. Who cares?

... and some people, like me, actually think these cards are a good idea to have around. Y'know, if I have to explain Magic to anyone new, it makes such a nice addition to all the fantasy stuff when you pull a Kai and show the other guy the number on his back.

The execution could be better, but for people who care about the character players in this game (like me), they make a nice gimmick. It's nothing anybody needs, but it's nice to have these. Adds another facet to Magic, somewhat. I'll be trying to pick up the complete set -- shouldn't be too hard with everybody else throwing them away.

Most geeks' heroes are already on the cards! Dakkon Blackblade is much cooler than some dork.

I like that idea. But it would be just as cool to do that with pale moons, or one with nothings. Hell, why not have everyone on the mana drain all set out to collect as much Kai Buddes as possible, and then burn them all but three. Then sell one to Kai, one to wizards, and one to some collector, and use the profits to buy some new power.

...Yeah, back to real life. These cards suck, I would much rather have the old legends rule insert then these. Enough said.

Rare cards only increase in value when they're desired by players. Try to buy a Natural Selection, then try to buy a Mox.

How hard would it be to make a set of these, now that we have a basic layout?  Either with a laser printer or careful forgery?  Make a TMD set.

probably not very hard at all.  Once they are released it will be even easier as you can get a high quality scan from which to run amok on photoshop with.

If people want I could photochop out the info once rav gets released, so that TMD'ers can manipulate away.
