I was sitting in my room last night alphabetizing my collection (I was bored and there was nothing on tv, ok?) when I got to thinking about creating a database system for my collection.
Do any of you have any reccomendations on how to do this? Is magic suitcase a good program for getting raw data? I am looking to create something on my computer that I can just go to and see what I have, without having to go through my boxes to try and find it. I can also mark what decks my cards are in as well. I could also keep track of prices. It would also be useful to bring a list of my "unpopular" rares/uncommons with me. That way, if someone doesnt see what they are looking for in my trade binder, I can give em a list of what I have at home and take a mailing address with me.

I am unsure about any programs, but i would start by sorting them by series. Then by colour and then by alphabeth.
I have almost all cards and this system works for me as i always will find the cards i need unless they are in a pile on my desk. (I really need to clean that desk one of these days)

I think MWS offers some of the functionality you might be looking for, but I never use it for that, so I don't really know. The program itself is much more powerful than just MWSplay, but nobody I know actually uses MWS for anything else than playing. Check it out, though, it might work. Offhand, I can't think of another tool short of "real" database programs.

/edit: MWS is Magic Workstation, obviously. Minor oversight on my part not to spell it out at least once...

I use to use Magic Workstation to keep track of my collection ... From the worst Commons, to the best Rares ...
I haven't updated it in awhile though because it does get time consuming ...

I just use Microsoft Works Database. I have a separate database for each binder, and I have fields for condition, number, language, foiliness, set, whether a card is decked, etc.

I usually just accumulate junk and then sell it to Pete whenever I'm at an SCG power event. They take bulk stuff as well as bad rares, and they actually give a very fair price on that stuff. I'd rather have the cash or good cards, rather than try and find random people who are looking for Timesifters and Sway the Stars.
It is actually not worth the time and effort to sort out bad cards, it is just so much more practicle to bulk it off.

MWS is great for keeping track of your collection. You just have to be mindful if you trade often to keep it updated. I keep my colelction stored in a cabinet built to accomodate 1000ct boxes. The collection is sorted by color then set the alphabetically. I can find a card in under 20seconds.

So can I, there's just no guarantee it'll be the one I'm looking for! I just keep my smallish collection in some binders and boxes. I have just one shelf of cards, though, because I've always gone for quality more than quantity. That's fine by me, though. There is no need to accumulate 10,000 cards and then having to sort them. What forcefieldyou said sounds good, although you don't always find a place that buys cards by the pound. There's just too many cards noone ever needs... or wants. Dozer

I sold off about 500 commons yesterday for $5. Mostly Ravnica and Darksteel. PLenty of good, playable stuff - I wouldn't rip anyone off!
That's how I keep my collection trim.

yeh, constantly unloading the chafe is a great way to keep things down to size...if I start accumulating a number of decent commons/uncommons that I already have a playset of (say dark rituals) ill go unload about 30-40 of them to get into a decent rare or two...there isnt too much of a need for 50 of a single card unless you are a dealer or its one of a FEW special cards you like to collect.

http://www.a12c4magic.co.uk/free_downloads.phpI am trying out this site. I have slightly modified the database to include a foils section, a set section, and an "in deck" section. It seems to be working fairly well, except for the saviours set, which doesn't sort right for some reason, but I emailed them back and am awaiting a response. Every time a new set comes out, I can just go to the site and paste it at the bottom of the spreadsheet, and resort it into its proper place. j
