Quite apart from the established fact that TMD would rather see Midgets than Dwarves, after reading
Matt Cavotta's MTG.com article I began to think about Dwarves in Magic.
Every color has an archetypical creature type that does not bleed into other colors. Zombies (and Rats) are always black (Metathran Zombie doesn't count), Goblins are always red, Elves are always green, Illusions and Merfolk are always blue, and White is known for its Angels (the two black Angels were white once anyway).
Now, Dwarves. With every color and especially Red having the archetypical race already firmly established, wouldn't it be time to treat Dwarves like Humans, recently introduced to Magic? Dwarves have many different traits when you look at established fantasy: there are evil Dwarves, benign Dwarves, Dwarves sharp as knives or dumb as fuck and probably even some tree-hugging Dwarves. There is huge potential to bring on the Dwarves as a major race, one of the few that can be found in all colors (right now, only Dragon and Human fit that category!).
Dwarves do not have to be red at all. In fact, it's easy to imagine Dwarven woodcutters (green), Dwarven smiths, soldiers and guards (white), Dwarven miners, warriors explorers (red), Dwarven traders, wizards, mages and necromancers (blue, black) and many more! Dwarves definitely deserve determined defenders diligently doing daring deeds to bring them back to Magic. There is no other non-human race that can survive the blocks ahead and become a fixture of Magic across all colors, showing up everywhere and in all areas of life.
Go away, Cephailds! Piss off, Loxodon! Here come the Dwarves. Back in full force!
