So my friend at work is going to sell me her PS2 for like 15 bucks and I now need to pick up some games for it. I'd like to hear from my esteemed comrades on some kick-ass games.

Main categories of intrest
RPG's (Please nobody suggest the worthless FFX/X2)
Action (Ico or MGS for example)
General goodness (Katamari Damacy and Co.)

Ones I don't care about at all
Fighting games (Already play the good ones in the arcade)
Sports (Real life sports > virtual)

Surprised

I can only recommend 2 at this moment:

- Grand Theft Auto Trilogy (3, Vice City, San Andreas)
Amazing games. Hands down my favorite series for numerous reasons. Give it a try. GTA3 and Vice City should be relatively cheap.

- Shadow of the Colossus
Every level is a boss battle! How can you go wrong Very Happy

You didn't specify what your stance is on racing games, but I'll throw my chips in for the Burnout racing series (3, Revenge). I like 3 better, but that's just my opinion. These racing games are mad fun.

I used my PS2 exclusively for the MegaMan anniversary which you already have, and PS1 games.

FF Tactics and Bushido Blade ftw.

Dynasty Warriors (any) - kill thousands of people, ride an elephant, turn the tide of battle

Gran Tourismo (any) - drive real fast, curse the license exams.

The only game I ever bought for PS2 that I really enjoyed was a game called "Rez."

For RPGs, you can get the odd-numbered Sakura Taisen games on PS2.

As far as "action" games go, if that counts platformers, then Jak 2 is an incredible game. Jak & Daxter (1) isn't quite as good, in my opinion, but because the stories are continuous, it's worth playing for the backstory. Also, a "fighting" game that you couldn't play in the arcade that's good if all you're looking for is a slaughterfest is Devil May Cry. You're much stronger than most of the enemies in the game. Unfortunately for you, the enemies will attack you in twos, fours, and twelves.

Devil May Cry

I'm a big DMC fan.  Just remember to get either the first DMC or the third, but NOT Devil May Cry 2.  That game sucked ass, and was ridiculously easy.  On the other hand, DMC3 on the hardest levels is basically impossible (at least for me, since I only end up playing it about once every couple of weeks).

I'll second the GTA trilogy. And don't just cheap out and get San Andreas because you think it's the upgrade of the previous two; they're all different games. I still own all three and go on rampages in different ones depending on my mood. GTA3 was the reason why I purchased my PS2.

For some other non-GTA games that are super sweet:

The Suffering 1&2
It's kind of like a cross between Resident Evil and Devil May Cry, but like a gazillion times better. The plot isn't dumb and there's no trace of any kind of anime roots (unlike DMC). Plus the gameplay is really fast-paced (unlike Resident Evil). That's because it was made by people like me. Make sure to play it alone with the volume up and the lights off. And wear some Depends. I tried both DMC and Resident Evil before I found The Suffering. When I played Resident Evil I was all like "man...I wish the freaking gameplay wasn't so slow and tedious and I didn't have to keep running back and forth; the story and setting are pretty cool, but the game itself is friggin' torture". Then when I played DMC, I was all like "man...I wish they had made Resident Evil like this; I can't stand the friggin' storyline and setting, even IF the game plays like an oiled-up hooker". The Suffering is the happy medium; pretty much the best of both worlds. AND you get to kill everyone in the game if you so choose. With shotguns.

Fight Night
Granted, sports are better played with live humans, but this game is the one exception. I absolutely HATE sports games to death, but I love Fight Night.

Way of The Samurai
I don't really know why this game is good, but I found it very addictive when I played it. Plus, you get to jump-kick townspeople in the chin.

Rune: Viking Warlord
Yeah...the story mode of the game gets kind of frustrating, but that's not why I have it. The one-on-one mode is sweet. Not because it has amazing graphics or groundbreaking gameplay, but because you're vikings. With axes. And it sells for like ten bux these days.

And I also must recommend Red Faction 2 for the obligatory multiplayer FPS. If you want to get some friends together and have a good time with some of the sickest muppet-mowing gats to come along in a while, then this game is for you.

For the record, every game I've suggested with the exception of San Andreas and The Suffering 2 are like 4 years old and under $20. Because I'm a cheapass who doesn't keep up on new developments.

DDR MAX 2

Seriously, I own 2 games for PS2, that and Madden 2004. Madden is mildly entertaining, but I've been playing DDR for like 6 months now. The shit is SAVAGE. Good music + workout =  Very Happy.

I agree. I thoroughly enjoy listening to Alice In Chains when I'm deadlifting DDR players.

There are still arcades?

Seriously though Soulcalibur II and III blow Tekken away.

Dragon Quest VIII is supposed to be really good. I'm about 10 hours into it, and so far so good!

I also really enjoyed Lego Star Wars,  Cool.

I live in Northern California, there's like an Arcade every 30 minutes from wherever you are.

SC2 is fine, got bored with it except when the good people show up the play. SC3 seems fun.

Personally I'm still a 2d fighter guy. 3S and GGXX ftw.

And I thought I was the only one who wanted to try that!  Dragon Quest fucking rocks though.

At Toys R Us (where I work in the R Zone) Lego Star Wars is one of the best sellers, and it's not always the moms wanting to buy it for their kids either.

I'll second God of War and add the entire Prince of Persia trilogy (although the second one was much worse than the other two).
