I'd post the IT decklist but...

1. GWS has a history of extensively testing decks and figuring out the perfect 75 cards...then changing like 5 of them in the car, so I don't know exactly what list was used.

2. It is Eric's deck and he should post it.

3. Eric is working on a primer and I don't want to blab about specifics of deck if he's already written about it.

The Jester's Caps were very strong in his list.  If he had capped my Duplicant instead of my Mindslaver I wouldn't have been able to win game two.

I don't know how I feel about the Defense Grid.  It can be situationally amazing, but at the same time when he played that on the first turn I was kind of relieved it wasn't anything else.  I'm pretty sure that Tangle Wire would have been infinately worse for me than the Grid was.  Caps were the hots though.  I can see that really stealing a lot of games especially against Gifts or Tendrils.

I will say this:  Evenpence is a really cool dude.  I'm glad I got a chance to play against him.  (and I'm not just saying that because he was my best match up in top eight!)  Congrats on making top eight both days!

The main thing is that he was somewhat unfamiliar with the MD Jester's Caps.  I was doing my best to explain "cap" theory to him as we played, but remember, he only started testing a list with Caps in it after he and I finished coming up with an optimal version of the deck, and that was 6 AM.  He was also having to travel later that day.  I'm still really happy it did well.

He said that if my list performed better than the Ubawire list he had in testing, he would run it.  My guess is that he ran it Day 1, was happy with the results (as per the T8) and likely ran it day 2 as well from those results.  Although I don't know if he did in fact run it on Day 2, he did T8 again.

From Shay's cell phone about 30 min ago.
Hi-Val is 2-0 (Hi-Val equally had a game loss for some random reason, but pwned shay in the only game that mattered)
Shay is 1-1 (Shay played Hi-Val and got a game loss for dropkicked Tinker on the floor)
Ray is 1-1
Ashok is 1-1 (Losing to Glacial Chasm!)
Cron is 1-1
Andy is 1-1
Buhler is an Ornithopter. (0-2 for those who have never seen one)
JD is 1-1 or 0-2 I THINK, the phone started to cut out.

Shay is playing CS as usual. Andy has Gifts. Hi-Val and Meandeck are playing "terrible meandeck ichorid.dec". Ashok is playing Sui Black. No idea on the rest.

Ashok was playing Frigorid.  If he played Sui Black he would have had sinkholes and wastelands to get rid of the retarded Chasms.

The decklist I played on day two was identical to the deck i piloted to top 8 at SCG chicago , the previous SCG event I attended, except I ran 3 Gemstones and 2 Underground Seas. http://sales.starcitygames.com/deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=14156  The SB was a bit better though.  Grim Long was insanely strong all day.  We had  multiple Grim Long players in contention until the final round when JD and Paul M - both playing Grim Long had to play and then JD got 9th place.

The highlight of my weekend was winning on turn one in games 1 and 3 of my match against Rich Shay, knocking him out of the day two tournamnet.  Rich only got to play turns in game two, when I had a turn one goldfish that he ruined.

I got back from this event a couple of hours ago, and it was really a blast. My highest finish was 16th on Saturday. I was hoping to place higher but the Gifts mirror went to time twice : (

The field was pretty tough on Saturday. There was a lot of pressure at the tournament, and some players let it get to them. However, I watched some really great games (like smmenen with grim long), and met some cool people.

This is as close to a report as I'm going to get, and some people deserve props, so I will give those here:

Marc Perez for actually showing up and bringing the beats; that was awesome.
Randy Buehler for showing up, and listening to some of my concerns about WotC support for Vintage (please let me know what Scott has to say).
Hill Redwine for savagely good transportation, letting me borrow cards, and like 100 other things.

It was fun to hang out with people I hadn't seen since the very first Richmond P9 event, and meet new players. Thanks to all the people who showed up.

He did, with Ichorid day 1, and Grimlong day 2, as did Becker (GWS IT both days) and Evenpence (Uba both days).

I like to switch things up.

I'm the only person who plays different decks all the time, apparently.

Although I think my chances of winning the event in day one would have been much higher with Grim Long, I actually try to push things along a little bit.

I'm always dissapointed when "name" players play the same old shit, predictably.  It doesn't really do anything for the format.

I came in 4th Day 2 with Control Slaver, losing to Kowal in the semis.

I roomed with Shay, Brassman, and Stefan E. Day 1 Stefan played Rich's deck, but Day 2 he decided not to play, so I figured I'd give it a go. This was the first Mana Drain deck I ever played at a tournament---whaddya know, they're pretty good!

Control Slaver (from memory)

Mana
5 Moxen
1 Black Lotus
1 Sol Ring
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana Vault
4 Volcanic Island
2 Underground Sea
3 Flooded Strand
2 Polluted Delta
3 Island
1 Tolarian Academy
1 Library of Alexandria

Essentials
4 Force of Will
4 Mana Drain
4 Brainstorm
4 Thirst for Knowledge

Artifact Stuff
3 Goblin Welder
2 Mindslaver
1 Triskelion
1 Darksteel Colossus

Broken
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Yawgmoth's Will
1 Tinker
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Time Walk
1 Fact or Fiction

Utility/Other
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Merchant Scroll
1 Echoing Truth
1 Fire/Ice
1 Duress
1 Rack & Ruin

SB:
1 Pyroblast
1 Red Elemental Blast
2 Rack & Ruin
3 Annul
2 Ensnaring Bridge
1 Duress
2 Tormod's Crypt
2 Lava Dart
2 Pyroclasm

That's only 59 cards in the main. I'm probably forgetting something really obvious. I think the only difference between this list and Shay's is Duress in the main is a Tormod's Crypt, and the boards are a bit different.

EDIT: Remembered 60th card.

Team Meandecks ichorid deck that put me into top 8 is revealed here:

The list we ended up running was a few cards different, but the basic idea is all there.

JD got 9th place.

It was a fucking beating.  My breakers actually went down after the last round (and my 6th round opponent made it in), so I guess my earlier opponents all jobbed out and lost on me, sending me to 9th.

Also, anyone who asks about the decklists before Thursday will be shot by my personal team of mercenaries.

The entire weekend was savage, mad props to everyone I met.

Sorry about the confusion Doug, but random flirting is still appreciated. I'm also sorry about the "Death Cloud everyone for a million" play in the Type 4 game, but it was late and I needed to go.

JD, I can't believe that.  You won and your tie-breakers went DOWN!?  I feel so sorry man.  Don't stay up too late writing those decklists up.  Petition for more Top 16's!  Smile  I really liked the way the SCG was run, most professional vintage tournament I have ever been to by far.

That's what tiebreakers do. When you win, your opponent loses, thus bringing down your first tiebreak, which is opponent's win percentage (the total of all of your opponents). Plus, if everyone else that you played drops a match, your tiebreaks will go down. Note: there is a floor of 33%, so going 0-1 is the same as going 0-8, tiebreak-wise.

I placed 7th on Day 2 playing Roland Stax as suggested by JD. It was slightly different from the list posted here, the only thing I can think of at the moment is in the board no Heritic or Fastbond and +2 Choke.

I managed to 5-0-2 and lost to Fisher in the first round of the top 8.

  (snip)
With that said, I think the deck below is surely something to be reckoned with.

Changstax 2006

1 x Black Lotus
1 x Mana Crypt
1 x Mox Emerald
1 x Mox Jet
1 x Mox Pearl
1 x Mox Ruby
1 x Mox Sapphire
1 x Mana Vault
1 x Sol Ring
3 x Sphere of Resistance
1 x Trinisphere
3 x Crucible of Worlds
4 x Tangle Wire
4 x Smokestack
1 x Triskelion
1 x Sundering Titan
1 x Darkblast
1 x Imperial Seal
1 x Vampiric Tutor
1 x Demonic Tutor
1 x Ancestral Recall
1 x Tinker
1 x Crop Rotation
2 x Gorilla Shaman
4 x Goblin Welder
1 x Swords to Plowshares
1 x Balance
1 x Barbarian Ring
1 x Bazaar of Baghdad
1 x Strip Mine
1 x Tolarian Academy
3 x Gemstone Mine
4 x City of Brass
4 x Mishra’s Workshop
4 x Wasteland

Sideboard:
3 x Chalice of the Void
3 x Duress
1 x Fastbond
1 x Jester’s Cap
2 x Rack and Ruin
2 x Ray of Revelation
2 x Tormod’s Crypt
1 x Viashino Heretic

(snip)

I'm not sure 1 to 8 sets of Foil power are going to do much to the price of power globally.

also, let's keep this on-track to Richmond discussion.  Someone can open a thread in one of the community threads about foil power/prizes if they want.

Why is anyone surprised that Steve played Grim long? That deck is absolutely incredible. I play it a lot and if you know how to exchange slots in the maindeck, it can destroy people.

I'm actually depressed no one really plays the deck.

i can understand why people dont play grim long as much as some of the other combo decks.  As i believe Steve has said before, that deck is rather unforgiving of play mistakes, and it takes someone who has A) either invested the time to test the hell out of it, or B) has a heck of alot of playskill naturally with combo decks to pilot it correctly.

I dont know, maybe because I have always played Ritual combo on the side can be the reason I feel comfortable with the deck. I like the skill level needed to pilot the list also. I Think if people played more Grim Long type combo ,it'd make them better at the game. I really didn't see many people playing this deck after the primer came out on SCG. I feel a lot of the community just pushed the deck aside due to the Ritual based nature of it. Also because of how difficult Steve's Combo decks can be.

Anyone play Grim Long that has a report from day two? That'd be sweet. Thanks to all.

Do you guys want me to write one?  I won't get to it until at least the weekend, but I'm pretty sure I can remember what happened in most of my games still, or at least the interesting ones (i.e., the ones you actually want to hear about), since I talked about them between rounds.

I hadn't planned to write one because I scrubbed out in 9th place and didn't feel proud enough of my performance to write a report on my own.  But we all know that I'm a sucker for public demand when it comes to reports.  Razz

Not everybody has the time or the ambition to be a pioneer for the format, Steve. A lot of players are quite content playing their pet deck and finetuning it to perfectness for each tourney/metagame they play in. So you´re a generalist. Other people are specialists. Perfect.
