I would like to host another TMD Open somewhere near the end of May.

Ideally, for me...Memorial Day weekend would work, though I imagine many people will be doing other things that weekend.

So, tell me honestly, which of the following three dates would work best for you.

Please, answer honestly.  An answer of all three just to appease when not true is not helpful.

Thanks as always, guys, for your time.

EDIT: SCG is June 4th and I don't plan on conflicting.  Poll changed.

College Finals for most colleges take place from May 17th to May 23rd... That being said, I beg you to run the tournement on the 27th, because it would give more college students the oppertunity to attend your event, OR at least attend your event with some preperation!

Regardless, I will be there. Waterbury is Waterbury end of story. Prizes may not be as big for top 8, but the TMD prize structure is still crazy good for a smaller entrance fee, and it reaches a greater percentage of the players!

1 Idea:   Your original Waterbury events gained fame because they were more fun then the stricter tournement settings that we have now. I feel waterbury could regain this by trying to regain the community/teams in some of the original games that made waterbury popular about 4 years ago (YES I AM GOING WAY BACK).

Proposal:

The Type 1 Team Challenge:

Teams of 6 people would compete in the following events (PLAYERS CANT BE ON MULTIPLE TEAMS)

Event 1: Trivia - 20 Trivia questions... Each question is presented to all teams at same time... Teams will have a whiteboard where they will secretly write down there answer, and all teams reveal answer at same time... If your right you get a point... Simple! 1st place gets team 5 points... 2nd place gets 3  pt... 3rd place gets 1 pt...

Event 2: Card Throwing Tournement - Each player on each team will throw 1 card... It will be to difficult to measure exact card thowing distance... So points on a toss will be broken up into zones...Every 10 feet = 1 point... Add up group totals to get total score... 1st place again gets team 5 points... 2nd place gets 3 points... 3rd place gets 1 pt...

Event 3: Three Card Stud - This has been popular on the mtg casual forum... 1 deck per team to be played by team member of choice... Teams will randomly paired in bracket and will be single elimination tournement... 1st place 5 points... 2 place 3 points... 1 place 3 points...

Event 4: Taco Eating Contest - 1 Player chosen from each team in a simple taco eating contest... Most taco's eaten in 30 minute time period wins... 1st place 5pts... 2nd place 3 pts... 3rd place 1 point...

Event 5: Pack wars tournement - 1 Player chosen from team... Packs provided (as part of team entrance fee)... Single Elimination tournement from bracket... Sure luck is envolved but its magic! 1st place 5 pts... 2nd place 3 points...3rd place 1 point...

Bonus! Each team gets 2 Bonus points for each player who finishes in top 16... 3 Bonus points for each top 8... 5 points if your team has the TMD champion...

This could be a day 2 event... If run efficiently I did some math and would take only 1-2 Hours... and could be done without interfering with the event... Trivia could be run inbetween rounds 2-3 (around noon) for 1/2 hour so players on teams could compete and those who decide not to can go grab lunch/pizza...

Just an idea!

I am likely going to be in Japan or graduating whenever this happens, but I promise you, one of these days, I am going to get up there for this tournament.

I am concerned that it is still close to SCG if you run it on the 27th.  I think you'll find some people who won't go to one event or the other who would otherwise go to both.  My prefernce is the 20th and I'd say there is a 50% chance I'd go but a 0% chance I'd go on the 27th.

As always I'll go to any date. However, while it will be in the middle of college finals, I think a larger hit would be taken if the event is held literally 1 week away from Starcity.

I think it definetly changes things in the minds of the people who would have had to "choose" between events. With the extra week apart regardless of date it will allow more people to feel more reasonable about attending both events. However, for the majority of players I believe they would attend both events anyway, and remember waterbury is waterbury people make things happen to come to this event!

I like the idea of the syrup contest travis! I thought of that innitially, but decided to say taco contest because that would be more appealing to Ray who loves taco's more then sex.

I received word back from the Marriott...they have the ballroom for Memorial Day Weekend, but sadly, they are completely booked from sleeping roomds(it is a huge travelling weekend).

My next consideration is July 8(since pretty much everything in between is booked a conflict).

Anyone see a reason why the July 8th weekend is bad or can you make it?

I don't know how it will affect people, but I notice that SCG has a back-to-back P9 weekend on 1&2 July at Origins.

My goal is typically to avoid SCG events.  I aim to never have my dates on the same day as any SCG and not even within one week of a New York SCG.

Origins is about as far as Chicago SCG's and so I don't imagine that there will be much of an effect.

Furthermore, people will usually go to the first of two big events, and so if anyone would take the hit it would be me.

If TMD open and SCG tournament would be a week apart and not to far away from eachother i may actually try and get some people together to go to both and see some sites in the states inbetween. That said, not this year as this year is to expensive for me allready as a marriage is costly, not to speak about the upcomming move. But still, perhaps a couple of other europeans may actually try and come when not to far apart and away from eachother.

Indeed Marco: I've been saying forever that I might attend, however, it always was on too short a timescale, which meant I couldn't get a few days off, book a flight etc. If this is announced a few months in advance, I'm probably able to actually attend Smile

Also, if someone can tell me what the neaerest "big" airport to Waterbury is that international flights can arrive at, AND if I could arrange a ride with someone there and back, that would also be a big help Very Happy

Bradley International Airport is most likely your best bet if you're flying in.  It's in Connecticut, only about an hour outside of Waterbury.  I'm sure if you were able to get that far, you'd be able to find a ride from one of the many locals that would be attending.

TF green wouldn't be terrible either if you're going to have a rental car. TF Green is an awesome airport.

TF Green is probably my favorite airport of all time. Its pretty much the only one I haven't been lost in.

Anyway, if you head in through it, there are a ton of RI people who wopuld be driving that way. I'm sure you'd find a ride.

Since no one else has said it:

June 8th is a week away from SCG Charleston double P9 tournament.

Ironically, May 28th is actually two weeks away from the SCG tournament in Rochester, which would make that weekend fine sine they moved it further away.

Memorial Day Weekend is probabbly out because the Marriott has no sleeping rooms whatsoever.

arent there ALOT of hotels in waterbury, and in CT in general... At worst you could get a hotel im middlebury/southbury which is only 10 minutes away from waterbury... However, then finding rides could be a little tricky etc... So I think moving the date to June 8th makes perfect sense. ANYBODY who would take a plane to waterbury is a hardcore type 1 player, and those kinda players dont care if tourneys are back to back weekends, because they will make both generally.

I would bet that not having rooms available at the mariott on the 28th wouldn't impact day 1 attendance at all.  However, many of those people that don't want to have to drive from an outside hotel to get to the tournament for day 2 wouldn't come day 2.

I personally don't see the issue of people finding another hotel to stay at to play day 2. And memorial day weekend is a great time to do the tournament regardless.  However, was it memorial day weekend last year when attendance for day 1 dropped to 140ish?  And was the cause of the drop due to the holiday weekend?

No the problem last year was that the event was held on April 30 and that was too close to when people were taking finals.

I'm looking at the following schedule:

May 27 (Memorial Day weekend is good, but Mariott is sold out of sleeping rooms)
June 3rd (too close to Rochester SCG)
June 10th (Rochester SCG)
June 17th (Beanie 4x Workshop)
June 24th (Battlegrounds + kinda close to Beanie + Origins)
July 1st (Origins SCG)
July 8th (Coldsnap Prerelease)
July 15th (RIW Event)

I think I may have to go with May 27th and warn everyone to book rooms at nearby hotels now, since they may not last.  Opinions?

Origins, HeroesCon, whatever Very Happy. Being in New Zealand, I obviously can't play in any of those, but May 27 is probably the best bet, if only because the later you leave it, the more likely it is people will go to other stuff instead, especially regarding events in the middle of a sequence (I've had lots of practice scheduling chess tournaments, and that's what I've found).

I had to reschedule around many large events SCG, Beanie 4 workshop, etc.

To make matters worse, after not hearing back from the Marriott on a date for 2 weeks I called to find why my contact person, Lisa, wasn't returning my calls.

"Sorry, Lisa doesn't work here anymore."

Great...thanks for telling me.

But, now I can finally say what you all are waiting to hear.

TMD OPEN 9 WILL BE HELD ON JULY 29-30th.

(I know this is the same day as nationals.  I don't expect too large a spill over in terms of players.  For those that can't make it...I apologize but no weekend seems to ever be perfect.)

Complete info will be posted tonight...but I wanted to make it known for people who need to make reservations, request time off, etc.
