Et in Arcadia ego

My name is Brian and I started playing Magic in the Homelands/Fallen Empires-clogged days. I gave it up around Visions due to money and the fact that my playgroup fell apart, and then played a few games in college before returning with a vengeance around Shadowmoor's release. The game was a lot more stimulating and the players were a lot more advanced, so I began gobbling up theory and game history as much as I could. I randomly played in a 10 proxy Legacy event and loved it, and then found out about 10 proxy Vintage events in the New York area. I have been going to these events when I can find the time and a ride. I've met a lot of the super nice folks in the NYSE/Philly Open scene, and they could not be a better group of gamers. After I had months of trouble getting on this board because of spam problems, they put me in touch with the right people and got my reputation cleared. Stellar work, fellas! I was told to post in this thread to make sure my account works, so I hope I'm not considered necroing an old thread.

I'm 27 and live in Brooklyn. I work in Manhattan as a writer. When not playing Magic I like to read Pynchon, DeLillo, DFW, or history books. Always up for WWII or colonialism chit chat.

My name is Kristopher and I'm turning 27 this year, and I come from the Philippines. I started playing Magic way back around 4th Ed/Ice Age, and kinda went on/off through the years. I finally started to play competitive Vintage here in our country around six(?) years ago, first playing budget 2-land Belcher, then on to TPS (also on a budget), and once I finished college, I settled on Stax.

Although I'm somewhat semi-retired here in our local T1 scene, I am still an avid reader/lurker here in TMD, primarily in the Workshop-based prison forums. I hope to learn more about the archetype, and that someday (soon, hopefully) I could contribute to the discussions here.

Hey all, I'm David Ho, and after lurking as "Guest" for a while on these boards, I just wanted to introduce myself to the Vintage community.  I've done a few proxy events in Houston at my local card shop and at the GP Houston side event (Top 4!...thanks to my Top 8 opponent dropping...I think there's a thread here somewhere on that), but I attended Gen Con this year and picked up the last pieces of Power to unproxy my deck all in one go so I could attend Vintage Champs and proceeded to 0-2 drop from it.

However, later that weekend I attended an 11 PM Vintage Win-A-Camera side event and realized that the Vintage community is pretty awesome and hilarious.  Now that I can entered sanctioned events, I hope to see more of the same cool people at events in the future.

My name is Derrick Correia.  I've been playing MTG since late 93 or early 94.  I took a break from Alliances to Time Spiral and I've been having a blast since I came back.  I hope to start playing in more T1 tournaments but my time is limited.

Since I haven't done this yet, here it goes.

My name is Kor, 24 years old, living in the Netherlands and I've gotten into magic around the year 2000.
started with a portal: Three kingdoms starter set, but never really got into it to the point of buying boosters or additional card packs.

I stopped playing when Wizards introduced a new card frame/layout in 2003, partially because I disliked the new frame/layout,
but mostly because the people I played with stopped playing and I didn't find any other players.

I can't exactly remember how, but in the summer of 2007 I met some new people that, to my surprise, played magic. this was around the time Lorwyn was about to be released, and being a fan of elves and fae, I decided to 'restart' and bought a starter deck. Soon after, I realized I didn't quite like the fae, but I discovered treefolk and 'the game was on!' I built a treefolk deck and actually started winning games! This was a pretty good motivation to keep on playing, and so I did. I own a variety of decks now, playing a bunch of different formats and having a great time every time I pick up my cards to play. I'm still rocking the treefolk deck, and it's a pretty decent multiplayer deck, even with the eldrazi hanging around.

I came across this website when I was looking for ideas for a new deck and discovered the 'vintage' format because of this. Even though I still haven't built a vintage deck I've been lurking here for a while and will probably get a bunch of 'staples' [as they're called here] in the near future.

I'm hoping to learn heaps more about the game, how to be a 'better' player and the 'vintage' format in general by browsing these fora. It's been a pleasure hanging around in the IRC chatroom accompanying this website, and will hopefully be around for quite some years.

Hello everyone, I'm Reuben Gosewisch.  My brother and sister in law got me into magic back in Lorwyn and have enjoyed it ever since.  I took a break last year, but kept my "Magic Budget" and instead of doing the FNMs, collected old cards to get into Eternal Formats.  I have tried Legacy, but Vintage is what I really enjoy.

I decided to finally join after lurking for some time to find others in my area to play and get tips on refining decks I am playing.

Thanks for the great discussions, looking forward to more.

Well, why not?

My name is Roel Jans. I am a dutch lvl2 judge and Advanced T.O. I've judge quiete some vintage events for both Marske and crew and in Mol. I've also organised a few and I am currently the TO of the Dutch Legacy and Vintage Championships. But next to that I organize everything from FNM to PTQ's. I've started playing somewhere around urza's saga and started to play tournaments during oddessy-onslaught. I tested for level 1 in 2007 and for lvl 2 in 2009 (so I guess that level 3 will be next year Smile)

Sometimes I get to play as well, my favorite format is legacy followed by boosterdraft, mostly because I don't have the time to explore every nook and cranny of vintage (so I ususally just copy-paste a decklist that seems fun). I mostly registered so I can actually post some vintage announcements when needed.

Ola!

I'm Ron from the Philippines. I just came back to Magic this year after a looong hiatus (started revised, ended mirage).  I didn't want anything to do with standard so its all eternal for me. I got a great deal on a legacy goblin deck and needless to say its been a slippery slope from there.

I've also recently acquired a set of zaars so I can bore people!  Wink

Hi TMDers,

I'm Chris Zhou and I play at Asgard Games in Houston, TX.  ho_master and grahaminator who posted here recently are also people from Asgard Games.

Brief history of my MTG career:
I started playing MTG when my group of best friends in middle school were playing the game.  Since the intuition when you were in middle school was just to hang out and have similar interests as your friends, I bought my first magic pack after a friend gave me a bunch of commons (mostly from Mercadian Masque and Torment).  The first pack I opened was a Torment pack and when I saw the art of Sengir Vampire, I swore I was hopping in the store and telling my friends how awesome the card was.  And started my MTG deckbuilding: I built my first deck with my first rare Sengir Vampire.  It was a black/green deck that ran a bunch of Mercadian Masque mercs and green was played with whatever green creatures I was given to.

As a competitive individual at heart, I slowly got more engrossed in the format.  Playing with my group of friends in middle school taught me that white weenies was a powerful deck with White Knights, Disenchant and Cataclysm.  There was simply no way to beat it.  I thought about ways to beat it, and built a fast red deck that could sometimes win, but whenever he got Paladin-en Vec or Mother of Runes out, I lost all the time.  Reading more articles, browsing Scrye magazines and fishing for more decks and ideas, I eventually fell in love with Extended.  At that point I was fairly competitive, and would go to magic scenes to playtest my decks.  I borrowed ideas from Aluren but made personal changes to it.  I ran Intuition + Vampiric Tutor + Hickory Woodlut.  It was close to being unstoppable.  My good friend built monoblack reanimator with 4 Vamp Tutors, 4 Entombs when Akroma was spoiled.  It became one of the hardest decks to beat.  Finding the best decks 'cheesy', I refuse to play them, but would always be on the 'innovation' and 'design' side when playing MTG.  I built Red Sligh in Extended, and it was mostly homebrew.  I ran 4 Wastelands, 4 Ports which were not common in most sligh lists, but my philosophy was I needed the land-tax to beat Reanimator while putting a clock.  Running 4 Waste + 4 Ports allowed me to abuse Veteran Brawlers, which at that time was the only efficient 4/4 for 2cmc in the format.  People did not expect him, and he won games fast.  My deck was completely foiled out (wastelands, ports, lightning bolts, volcanic hammers) and it was my favorite deck because it could beat most of the powerhouse decks when it played right.

After middle school, I decided to take a break from MTG and start life fresh in high school focusing on sports and academics.  I sold my collection for $600 Singapore dollars ~$400 USD.  Looking back now, I regret the decision, but no one can change the past.  I did well in high school, was a competitive canoeist that won a number of medals, and scored 8/9 distinctions to be placed high in the ranks of my school.  I then left Singapore to study at Rice University, Houston TX. It was not until sophmore year where my group of friends were playing MTG and I got caught back in nostalgia.  I thought to myself "Let me just play casually".  Oh man, I was wrong.  I first purchased all the cards that I had for my old Aluren deck since it was my favorite deck of all time.  And since I played Extended 9 years back, I made the move into Extended, and sleeved up Tron.  However, I have been out of the game for 9 years that I never heard about Legacy.  After looking more into the format, I realized that this was the format for me.  It had all the cards that I loved (tempest, saga block) and I instantly became hooked.  The girl who was responsible for bringing me to MTG is now my girlfriend whom I enjoy her company and she trolls me for being lame with my MTG hobby lol.

And then my girlfriend and I heard news that a game store was opening 5min walk from my off-campus apartment.  We got very excited and headed there.  People at Asgard were cool.  At that time, I played mental MTG/Legacy i.e. I owned the cards and played on MWS and not having anyone to play Legacy with me.  In school I would play Dragonstompy/Stax against my casual friends' decks and they would always complain how unfair it was.  Two weeks into going to Asgard Games, I spotted two people playing decks in one corner.  When I creeped up, I saw a Dreadnought on the table and a Tarmogoyf.  Immediately I went ape-shit.  We introduced, and started meeting weekly to play some games, and over time, our group has grown from 2-5 people to over 12-20 people that attend Legacy weekly.

That is my story of MTG.  How has this any relationship to Vintage/TMD?  I do have goals in getting into Vintage.  Cost is an issue at the moment, but I am willing to fork out for the staples I need for Vintage.  I do enjoy the very essence to what I believe is MTG: Vintage.  Being able to play with the historical cards that spanned from its beginning to end will be the biggest motivation for myself to play Vintage.  Over my few years of playing Legacy, I have begun to love control decks, and I feel that nothing more can be fulfilled with playing a playset of Mana Drains.  I am a control player at heart.  I would sleeve up Survival decks or some aggro decks, but tapping non-lands sideways always felt wrong.  I enjoy the challenges of the control role, because even though being the underdog, I truly enjoy the interaction against decks that want to avoid interactions (combo/prison/fast aggro).  I want to be able to deny their denial of interactions, and turn their position around after I stabilize, and overwhelm them with cards and board position.  If I were to sleeve up a Vintage deck, it would be Drain Control decks, namely Landstill.  I have not actively played Vintage, but I read articles and do the 'mental magic' again, and I feel that Landstill would be my deck of choice.  Despite its unpopularity, I do feel that it is quite well-positioned in today's meta, but this comes from a Vintage novice, who is more than willing to learn.

So be easy with me and nice to meet you all!

Hi all,

Trikky here, nice to forum-meet you all.

I'm sure I know some of you, I have been playing since the tail end of beta. Exclusively type 1 though I also like to draft and played some other formats for fun in tourneys in Florida during the 90's. I didnt play from 2000 until the last few months.

I am from South Florida, spent many years in Gainesville Florida and now live in Atlanta. Nickname is "Carlos'. I played thousands of apprentice games in the late 90's, knew almost everyone on IRC.

I'm getting back into playing T1 tourneys, I maintain 1 tourney deck (T1) and thats about it. I also have a fun deck that I use to play normal decks, but my main focus is one T1 tourney deck. I dont collect, I dont trade, I only tune the one deck. And I draft. I played a 4 vice burn deck until they restricted vise, then switched to control. I quit playing competitively when they nerfed mirror.

Sadly my deck, strats and experience has been sleeping for 10 years. Im trying to turn a late 90's keeper into something that wins now. Look forward to participating in tmd online community and play testing online.

My name is Jonn Lewis, and I've just recently discovered the awesomeness that is Type 1.  Very Happy

I started collecting MTG cards when Masques dropped, but I didn't really start playing until Fifth Dawn. (I know, i wasted alotta time hahaha)

The Standard landscape of the past 2 or so years has really bored me, and with the introduction of New Extended, I'd say I'm not likely to be playing either of these formats for quite some time. So in an attempt to still get my deckbuilding and strategizing fix, I started looking into Vintage play and haven't looked back. The diversity is astounding and the feel is unlike any other, it's how magic should be.

I'm from Dallas, Tx and am eager to get a deck finalized and begin playing some tournaments Smile

Mike Hajduk here.

I usually play in the MidWest, but am going to be moving in the near future.

I was wondering if anybody could give me a hand in finding where I can play (especially vintage) near Stamford CT?
I am not very familiar with the area and would like to continue playing the format.

My name is Manuel, chingpaq in these forums. I'm 34+ years of age

I'm from Manila Philippines

Long time Magic player, the last few years strictly playing Vintage (and some Legacy), does not playtest at all and would march at tournaments with only a day of preparation.

Eats, breathes and sleeps combo. Very fond of Food Chain Goblins, Belcher, ANT, Doomsday, and the rest of the Tendrils-based archetypes.

Been a long time member here. Its only now that i got the chance to really jot some text here

My name is josh, and i've been around the forums for a little while, but since i'm getting more serious about vintage, finally, I thought i'd actually join the forums and contribute something.  I'm from the Philly area, and I've been playing at Blue Bell and Bloomsburg.  Bloomsburg is a nice venue, but more people is always nice.  Although I'm not sure if i'm allowed back after beating the TO at NYSE. Sad

I used to be a tendrils fanatic, but now i've been working on Stax, and it got me my first top 8.  The best thing about Vintage, in my opinion, is the vast depth that each archetype goes.

Finally... somewhere I can post. Smile

He everyone. My name is Dan. I'm from New Zealand. I've pretty much started a phase in my life where I can attend very few tournaments and have now focused on Legacy and Vintage. Haven't got much time anymore to do playtests and as such, have to rely on articles on sites like TMD to help me prepare.

I am running a Stax deck and have really tried to read as much as I can about it. I've some success with 5c Stax (won a dual of an 8-player tourney) and made a couple of stupid plays (TfK -> Draws Welder, Thirst, Sundering -> Discard Welder, Thirst... DOH!). Currently in process of updating it into MUD Stax and doing some research.

Hello, my Name is Kyle Edwards and I am from a city in West Texas with a population of a little over 100,000 named Odessa.

I have been playing Magic since 2006 and spend most of my Magic time playing whatever format the current PTQ season has to offer. I have played in two SCG Legacy Opens, making Top 16 in one. I like to play Legacy when I can, however there aren't many players in my area who are interested. I have also had a great time playing Vintage a few times and would like to get into playing that more.

I currently organize and judge events in Midland, Texas at a game store named Astral Castle. I have been a tournament organizer since 2007, was certified as a Level 1 Judge in January 2010 and gained Level 2 later that year in August.

I hope to gain some insight to the Vintage format and community through this forum.

Hello all,

I thought I had introduced myself on here before, but I couldn't find anything.  I'm hoping to get some names for playtesting or tournaments near the San Antonio, TX area where I now reside.  So, here it goes.

My name is Eric Miller.  I first played magic in 1996 right at the tail-end of Revised/beginning of 4th Ed.  I frequent MWS as KillerKarma.  I only play Vintage and a type 4 variant I created (sorta).  I moved to Texas from Virginia.  I forayed into serious tournament competition back in 2003?  It was StarCityGames's first P9 tourney in Richmond, VA.  This was after my first real job and putting my disposable income into Vintage staples, which I now own 97% of them.  I had success in several P9 tourneys, top 8ing in my first 4, and then won a few local tourneys in SA, TX.  I pioneered a few decks like The Man Show, The Riddler, Non-gush-bond tyrant oath, and other decks.  I consider myself a deckbuilder/innovator above all else.  If you want to see any of my decks or tourney history, you can just look it up on here.  As the scene for Vintage is all but dead in SA, I'm looking for players in Texas to have actual card games with.  If anyone hears of a tourney with good support (I'd only drive 2-3 hours for a shot at a mox), or wants to meet up in SA for testing (or to start up a tourney), then hit me up.  Peace and chicken grease.

Hello there, TMD-ers!
I'm Alex, and I just played in my first vintage tourney today. I started playing during Onslaught block, then quit when vs system came out and I played that until it died and came back to magic at Conflux. I spent a year drafting, then built a budget standard deck, then built a real standard deck, and I've been playing standard basically since Zendikar.
Then I was exposed to vintage events at Myriad Games in Salem/Manchester NH, and was intrigued. It wasn't until today where at my school the gaming club held a 75% proxies (!) event that I decided to get into the format. I built R/U Painter Servant, and made it to the finals where I lost to Oath, so I'm pretty pumped. I'm looking forward to getting better at this format, playing back at Myriad when I go home for the summer and figuring out decks/strategy/metagames, which I figure this site would be good help for that. See you on the boards.

hi to all,
My name is Arcadio Briseņo (I know for english speaking persons it is not easy to pronounce), I am from Mexico (yes we do play eternal formats in Mexico) , well I lived in Mexico city for ten years and there i started to play magic the gathering and quickly jumped to Legacy and Vintage, the problem is now i moved to hermosillo, sonora (very close to tucson, arizona) and there are no mexicans that play this formats, so I am trying to go online to play,

if any of you can recommend a place in arizona to play legacy and vintage tournaments i would appreciate it

and if somebody can help me on getting started to play online i will also be very happy, since i have never played magic on the web, I really enjoyed playing and interacting with other players in real life, i do not know any software to play magic online

on a personal note, i am an orthopaedic surgeon and a important collector of magic the gathering

So I totally forgot that BrassMan had told me to register for TMD.

I'm Joshua; I am a very new player (as in I never played before M11) who has dove headfirst into all aspects of magic; I started out with Type 2 and Limited, expanded to Extended for the recent PTQ season, and just finished building a Legacy Merfolk deck. The one format that has eluded me so far has been Vintage, simply because in Florida the demand for it seems criminally miniscule. With any luck, TMD can help me fix that.

I run a Tumblr blog where I have written a few articles about the game, and I have feelers out to start writing for one of a few sites that might be interested in having me. I am in love with all aspects of the game, though for the time being I'm stuck searching for vintage games on MWS or Cockatrice. I'm excited to be here and see what TMD has to offer me, and what I have to offer to TMD!
