Night's Whisper  1B

Sorcery

Draw two cards and lose two life.

Would you rather sacrifice a permanent or lose two life in the early game?  How about the mid game?

First, analyzing a card in comparison to another is pointless when done out of the context of a deck. Second, what matters is how the card functions in a deck, and in SX, the question is whether or not the increased blue count for Force of Will out of the SB is worth not being able to cast the card off Dark or Cabal Ritual and whether or not sacrificing a permanent is better or worse than taking 2 points of damage. Such an ascertion can't be made in SX with out testing the card, because it can be argued that sacrificng a permanent is irrelevant to a deck that is designed to win on turn one and that sacrificing that permanent is beneficial, because it increases threshold for Cabal Ritual and gives an additional accelerant for Yawgmoth's Will. The 2 damage from Night Whispers is ALWAYS relevant, because the deck utilizes Spoils of the Vault and Necropotence.

SX won't become good due to a blue crappier night's whisper. So the argument seems to be moot here. Wow the card helps a deck taht isn't tournament worthy and won't be without a signficant improvement.

I stand by my original statement that the deck that wants this card is some sort of blue or 5C stax.  It lets you pull the plug on Smokestack once the opponent is locked down, or turn Tangle Wires with 0 counters into card advantage.  Or even sacrifice redundant Crucibles.

In my opinion hatching plan should be used with blue hate cards that are strong on their own. This will lead to a deck packed with hate and a lot of other cards trying to fill up the other holes. Blue and splash red and green because they are the antiblue colors

Hatching Plans plus REB is just assembling Thirst for Knowledge Voltron-style...at sorcery speed.

it doesn't matter, you will use the reb on the hatching only when you play a deck were it is non usable against. I wanted to explain how i think hatch should be used. With strong hate cards that would still be usefull if they are completely out of place.

As opposed to just running Thirst in the same slot?

another potential good fit for this card is something with SDTop in it. If you have an extra top you can T: draw a card on the stack and sac it to this.
Yes this is really similar to thirst and top but it does net you +1 card adv just the same.
There might be a deck there with Research Confidant and Top's considering they all work well together

So UR Hate.dec with  REB (and maybe Crucible) maindeck and Hatching Plans, or UGxHate.dec with Naturalize (and maybe Crucible) maindeck, and Hatching Plans?

The Draw engine sounds good enough (with brainstorm or something else as usual), but a kill condition (fishwise or otherwise) is neccessary.  Perilous Research can't be dropped into just any ol' T1 deck.

Green is not really an anti-blue color (colorwheel be damned). Blue is an anti blue color. Smile

If they´d put a gun on my head and said that I had to create a deck with Hatch Plans and Perilous Research it would be an U/r Fish like type deck that runs Abjure.

Something like:

4 Flying Men
4 Cloud of Faeries
4 Lavamancer
3 Ninja

4 FoW
4 Hatching Plans
3 Abjure
2 Curiosity
2 Perilous Research
1 Ancestral
1 Walk

2 REB

3 Null Rod

1 Sapphire
5 Strips
4 Fetches
4 Volc
4 Factory
5 Island

There are 11 cards that can make you get rid of Hatching Plans and the 7 cards that can do it while Hatching Plans is in play are not useless on their own.
But I don´t think it would work really well.

Research is a bad Magic card that won't see Type One play.

C'mon Rich you should hype up the card as it would be great for your opponents to play when your playing slaver!

I hate dredging up the dead, but it would also be another way to sac an Academy Rector.

Edit: Removed erraneous statement.
