Casting Cost of X on the stack vs in play.

Example: Turn 1 Mishra's Workshop, mox Chalice for 2
My turn, land mox...chalice for 1.  The chalice for 1 gets countered.

But an engineered explosives w/ 0 counters on it will kill the chalice at 2.

Explain why it works that way please. It gives me a headache trying to get people to understand the 'why.'

--What this thing called the "combat phase" is--Vintage players always seemed to get confused by it.

The "combat phase", as it is ambiguously called, is how you get Drain mana if you cast Mana Drain during your first (pre-combat?) main phase. Also, I think Darksteel Collosus has errata: "{T}: Darksteel Colossus deals 11 damage to target player. Play this ability only during the "combat" phase." I don't know whether this is power-level errata or not, as it clearly does not match the printed intent.

When calculating a converted mana cost treat "X" as zero everywhere *except* the stack.

Chalice/EE in you hand/library/graveyard/RFG pile has a CMC of 0.
Chalice on the stack has CMC of "X + X" and EE has a CMC of "X".

Chalice set at 2 counters a Chalice cast at 1 because *while it is on the stack* that new Chalice has a CMC of 2.

Engineered Explosives set for zero will destroy all Chalices because while they are in play their CMC is zero.

If there is a Chalice set for zero in play, it will counter the EE set for zero (since "X" is zero) *unless* there is colorless mana used to pay for the EE (off a Wasteland for example, in which case the CMC is 1 but it will get no Sunburst counters on it).

Chad - what did you end up sending/distributing to the judging staff?  Or did you just direct them to read this thread?

I am still working on the document.  As I said in an ealier post it would most likely not be finished in time for the Boston P9. Unless something drastic happens, the FAQ should be finished well before the next P9.  The Vintage FAQ is only a small part of a much larger Judging Document that we are currently working on and will all be released together.

Not sure if this comes up much anymore but duplicant targeting pentavus or another 0/0 with +1/+1 counters.

I've had judges tell me that I couldn't "fail to find" cards while resolving Gifts Ungiven, so I'd include a note on that.

I didn't see this the first time I read through this thread.  You can indead fail to find with Gifts Ungiven. Gifts Ungiven has you search for differently named cards, and that qualifies as a restriction. Anytime there is a restriction on your serach, you can fail to find.  Please remember, your opponent chooses two cards and those cards go into your graveyard.  So if you only search for 2 or less cards, they will all end up in your graveyard.

--What searches can and can not be failed (fetches, wishes, tutors)
It's worth pointing out that Wishes are not a search.

But yeah, when Gifts can be used as a double Entomb is significant.

I'd also talk about missing Drain triggers, and whether the opponent has an obligation to remind the player that s/he has Drain mana floating.

a general instruction not to read older cards to see what they do would be nice.  arguments about animates or illusionary mask get so much more heated when someone reads the cards and trys to figure it out since they're in no way similar to the printed wording.  Also the impulse misprint should be noted somewhere as most players still use versions that say "shuffle your deck" at the end of the rules text.

Some people don't seem to understand the interaction between a tapped Mana Vault and Yawgmoth's Bargain/Necropotence (player skips draw step so doesn't take any damage), so maybe something on that should be included, too.
