I'm still shocked Marty made the top8. He's a good player and a good guy from Wisconsin but he barely plays vintage. Congrats to him and to everyone else.
Wow. The midwest repped this one, taking 1/4 of the top8 spots with the one car that went. I'm impressed.
Becker Marty Seroogy Carp
Have to admit, I'm kinda dissapointed that Oath did well. I want it to bomb events. Did I mention I hate oath?

I get sick to my stomache seeing all the pitchlong lists take after Tommy as far as maindecking Infernal Contract over Windfall. Seriously, Windfall is the stone cold nuts. If you're going to play Contract, play it over Imperial seal.
I personally would just run nights whisper, since 2 cards without wasting a ritual should win you the game or get you out of the hole enough anyways. AND it doesn't normally get countered.

I was playing Bomberman Day 1 silly Billy's and I beat 3x Pitchlongs with it, and niched myself a nice Emerald losing to Becker in a very very close match.
I played pure insanity day 2, Jotun Grunts, Dryads, and MORE! With a final record of 4-2, running into bad.dec with lots of LD beating me.

I get sick to my stomache seeing all the pitchlong lists take after Tommy as far as maindecking Infernal Contract over Windfall. Seriously, Windfall is the stone cold nuts. If you're going to play Contract, play it over Imperial seal. The original list that I began testing after SCG Boston had Windfall and no Infernal Contract but the more I played with the card the more I disliked it. Personally I feel that if you can minimize that amount of Draw 7's you cast while going off you decrease the odds of your opponent hitting counter magic. Contract acts as a one sided Draw 7 where the life loss can be pretty negligible when your running 2x Tendrils. You may also notice that my list of Pitch Long is a little slower than most with 0 LED, 0 Windfall, and 0 Time Walk. Cutting Time Walk was a conscious decision and wasn't done due to card constraints. I don't think I'm the only one that likes Contract though as I was talking to Spooky Kid and Eric Becker and they were wondering how many I was running (1 or 2).

Jeff, are you going to write out a tournament report? I would really like to hear your thoughts on PL in addition to seeing how your matches went down.
Feinstein said that you were the best Long player he's ever played against (or something along those lines), so I think we'd all like to hear your analysis of the deck and why you built PL the way you did. I'd also like to hear more specifically about why Time Walk is not included - I have always included it in my builds, but have been questioning it lately.

LOL you've been playing GWS combo decks for ages haven't you? Didn't you play IT for a long time too? Yeah I pretty much consider myself a GWS barn because all of the decks that I do well with have come from GWS. I made some random T8's with IT and I made the finals of a SCG:Rochester with GWS Oath. @Evenpence I would have liked to write a tournament report about Day 1 but my short-term memory is very poor so if I don't write the report directly after playing in the tourny then I tend to forgot most things. I am looking forward to Fenstien's because his reports are the best.

My bomberman list was the same as Boston with one sideboard change...
-1 Tormod's Crypt +1 Trickbind
I beat: Paul Mastriano, funny story he says while tutoring "OMG THIS IS INSANE I CAN WIN WITH ALL OF THESE" I respond with "IT'S SO INSANE I HAVE TO CALL A JUDGE FOR SLOW PLAY" revealed a bit about his personality A random Pitchlong An ICBM'r with Pitch Long An Ubstax Drew with U/W Fish Lost to Eric Becker in round 2 and top 8...FTK is insane.
Thats like the 8 Pitchlong player I've beaten with Bomberman, in testing I always lose to it.
Day 2: Me, Becker, and Klep all design a deck that I want to play with zero testing. Since I am insane it actually works out.
GRO-A-?
4x Dark Confidant 4x Quirion Dryad 2x Jotun Grunt
4x Force Of Will 3x Misdirection 1x Gush 1x Ancestral 1x Time Walk 1x Mystical 1x DT 2x Orim's Chant 4x Duress 3x Merchant Scroll 1x Wipe Away 1x Yawgmoth's Will 4x Brainstorm 1x Regrowth
Heres the fun part: 4x Flooded Strand 4x Polluted Delta 2x Tropical Island 2x Underground Sea 2x Tundra 1x Scrubland 2x City OF Brass 4x On color Mox 1x Black Lotus
SB: 4x Seal OF Cleansing 3x Sacred Ground 2x Tormod's Crypt 2x Trygon Predator 2x Threads Of Disloyalty 1x STP 1x Darkblast
I lost to bad.dec with 9 strip effects, Vindicates and Sinkholes, IT WAS SO SAD.
Then I lost to Gifts in game three with an EXTREMELY questionable play on my part, and a lot of bad luck. I think the match is really favorable for this build...
I beat Stax (don't ask how), Sullivan Solution, Oath, and Pitch Long. All bad matches probably aside from Pitch Long most likely.
The competition was extremely tight this weekend desipite low turnout, I played tons of good players and I was impressed by the tightness of this tournament.

It was a really well run event, and it was my first trip to the SCG center in Va. I must add that the SCG building was beautiful and very spacious. Everything was wonderful, except:
1. A bearded Judge with long hair who though he was the worlds most important person, and hassled probably every person in the building at at least one point.
That was the head judge, which means that for that event, he WAS the world's most important person.

Yeah, Klep. But the guy was actually a total jerk. He wouldn't let anybody watch the top eight matches, he was constantly pestering my friends and I about all sorts of stuff, and he totally had that Simpson's 'Comic Book Store Guy" attitude about everything. Every time I heard anybody ask him a question, magic related or otherwise, he was always sarcastic and condescending with his answers.
He came over and yelled at me and a few friends for selling cards, and there was no money anywhere near our cards. We were not even trading, just having pack wars with our winnings. It seemed like he made it his business to concern himself in everybody else's business. I guess he just rubbed me the wrong way, but from talking to several people, I know I was not the only one. If you think he is the stone awesome, you are more than entitled to, I have a different opinion on the matter as a result of my experience at the event.

Just got back from the event, so time for random comments on the event0rz! Good things -Meeting Dave Feinstein, Machinus, KLEP!, Demars, Evenpence and assorted other guys for the first time was cool, and always good times chilling with Elias, Travis, Paul M. and others. -A 4th of the power given away being claimed by people I drove down with. Should've been 5 pieces, but Spooky Kid made a play error that cost him the top 8 day one. -Gro-A-What? That deck is AMAZING. -Travis for playing BROOOODSTAR~! in his deck day one then going 3-0 to start. Bad things -Murphy's Law. Oh my Jesus (not you Roxas) did that own me all weekend. I get sick on the ride down, dealt with severe stomach cramping all weekend long, had two cards stick together while sideboarding costing me a game loss and the match to Feinstein day one, playing Dragon day two and getting a SECOND (only two times I have ever gotten game losses in a event ever) game loss for a misreg on my deck because we were running late, dropping my breakfast on the floor of the tournament center (yes I cleaned it up Pete), seeing some of the worst draws in the history of ever with Dragon and scrubbing, and dropping 100 more bucks on this trip than I wanted to and I STILL owe people money. I loathe you Murphy, I really and truly do. -Brassman not showing up. </3 man -Spending like 45 minutes searching for a mall that we saw from the highway but apparently didn't exist when we actually got onto the city streets. Paul claims he went there. I say he was lying to make us feel bad. Overall though, was a great event and I look forward to the next one (and Murphy better leave me alone, my MTG karma has suffered enough because of you).

Just got back from trip. I must say the SCG location in Roanoke was great. It was very spacious, well lit, well air conditioned. It had easy access to food, and pretty much everything. It was definitely... VERY NICE!! I should have top 8d both days. I got 15th on day 1, from a $300 play mistake. and I took 5th place on day 2 with an all new 4 color stax deck. My good friend Marty Kostner also went with us and got 8th place with a very similar build. I think his was 4 cards different maindeck than mine. Overall the experience was a good one. If they had more events at the same location I'm sure that ICBM will make the trip. Also the Jet I got was in amazing condition. I would like to thank Pete for holding another great event with excellent prize support. I'll be writing a primer within a week or so about the new stax build, and it was great seeig everyone in the vintage community again. You all are great. -Jeremy Seroogy

Maybe it comes from knowing him, but I can tell you he was not being condescending (though I can understand how you could get that impression). He just likes to be very thorough whenever he explains something, so he'll end up explaining more than he needs to. As far as watching top 8 matches, he's perfectly fine with that. He just (rightly) didn't want anyone hovering over the matches, crowding the players and distracting them. That's why he set up the barricades. He takes his responsibilities as head judge very seriously. If he thinks something fishy is going on, he will investigate and if he's wrong, he'll typically apologize. I'm surprised he didn't in your case.

This tournament was a lot of fun. I enjoyed my hanging out with my fellow Meandeckers that I came with, but as usual hada good time with all the rest of you guys. Demars and his crew, Pirate Evenpence, Spooky Kid - you guys are all cool in my book.
I had a blast kicking everyone's ass while playing on Klep's Type 4 stack, which was pretty sweet. I got to play with Hydra this game, and he was a cool guy.
I lost to Travis. I definitly made some mistakes, but damn was his deck interesting- as usual! Never know what to expect from that guy, well, you know, other than workshops.
I hadn't met Elias before, he was a really amusing opponent, and we had some hilarious banter between us durning the match. Congratulations on making top 8! I didn't know what deck he was until after the match... I never saw a Salvager.
I resolved Turn 1 Necro 4 times on day 1 to a LOSS. Pretty ridiculous. Statisticly, it HAD to make wins for me on day 2!
I got re-paired after Ben Carp had just drawn up the TOTAL NUTZORS against me. How lucky!! Maybe another day, Ben.
I beat Eric Becker! He made up my deck! To his defense, I got pretty freakin' lucky in game 2. Eric is an awesome guy, and we got to check out some of the new decks he has cooking up in his mad-scientist laboratory. Let's just say that once he gets a few things fixed up, he has some really strong looking decks comming out.
I didn't get a re-match with Fienstein either day, which is a shame. Oh, well, maybe next time. Congrats on the T8's Dave!
The Sutured Ghoul deck was really sweet to watch, and looks like a blast to play.
As usual it was a well run event and the SCG gaming center is a really nice place to play. OH, and the food there was pretty damn good, which was very surprising. I guess I'm used to convention center food which is over priced and sucky, while this food was reasonable and delicious.
I would like to thank Pete for keeping the advertised prize support, even with the low turn-out. There were LOTS of prizes given out to places below Top 8 that people probably wouldn't have been too pissed about if they were taken away. It's nice to know that when you take off work, drive a bunch of hours, spend a ton of money on food and hotels, that you won't be disappointed.

I ran this list of URBana fish both days
Mana 25 4 Polluted Delta 3 Flooded Strand 1 Island 3 Usea 3 Volcanic 4 Wasteland 1 Strip Mine 5 Moxen 1 Black Lotus
Creatures 15 4 Gorilla Shaman 4 Ninja 3 Waterfront Bouncer 4 Dark Confidant
good stuff 2 1 Ancestral 1 Time Walk
Disruption 18 4 FoW 3 Chalice 2 Daze 3 Remand 2 Pyroblast 1 REB 2 Duress 1 Fire/Ice
SB 4 Flametongue Kavu 2 Hydroblast 4 Rack and/or Ruin 1 Annul 2 Arcane Lab 2 Planar Void
For day 2 I cut the 2 voids in the sideboard favor of a 4th REB and 4th Chalice. I don't really have time for a report but here's what I played against.
Day 1: 3rd Ben Carp with Oath 2-0 Elias Vaisberg with Bomberman 2-1 Travis Leplante with stax 1-2 Jerry Yang with Ichorid 2-0 Cody Vinci with Drain TPS 2-1 ID into t8 Elias Vaisberg with Bomberman 2-1 Mike Hetherington with Gifts 1-2
Day 2: 10th Chris Coppola with Gifts 2-0 Steve Menendian with Gifts 0-2 ???? with Uba Stax 2-1 Jerry Yang with Gifts 2-0 Paul Mastriano with Pitch Long 0-2 Ben Carp with Oath 2-1
Even though this event had a small turnout, the caliber of players was the highest I've seen for an event this size. All but 1 of my opponents has already made top 8's at big events.
As always the weekend was a blast. I met a lot of great people and had a really great time.
Props: SCG for everything ICBM for the ride and for cool to hang out with......but I'd never join your team Card Throwing Fights Elias for being awesome and Gro-a-??? Mox Ruby Tuesdays BroodStax an idea by Ben Carp, and perfected by Seroogy and I BILB

When I first read Card Throwing Fights I thought it said Carps Throwing Fists which would have been similarly awesome depending on at whom they were throwing the fists. I have a story about someone almost being banned for life from PES events for throwing cards on the ceiling. Ask me to tell it the next time you see me at a tournament. I love telling stories.
