Extirpate* {B}
Instant
Split Second
Choose target card, other than a basic land in a graveyard. Search its controller's graveyard, hand and library for all cards with the same name and remove them from the game.

This card seems incredibly strong.  Off the bat it's an uncounterable coffin purge, but the card obviously goes much further than that.  I can't see it not seeing play.

It's Root of Evil, and the text wasn't translated from Russian right; I would wait on this one.

It seems promising, I just can't think of where it would be put as far as decks go. I want to give it a try in one of my Fish lists, I just need to figure out what to cut for it in my SB.

If this card will come that way it will singlehandily change the face of Vintage

It seems really undercosted.   Naming Brainstorm alone could be brutalizing.

Yeah, nabbing things like AK after Intuition-> AK and Brainstorm seem really good.

I agree with Smennen though, seems really undercosted.

It was silly of Wizards to print this card as it is. It's powerful in every format (putting it mildly), and is going to see lots of play.

I am hoping that like Trickbind it will not live up to the hype, but I feel this is not to be. I have a nasty feeling that Wizards, instead of issuing bannings and restrictions in formats, printed this instead to hose various archetypes (at least in their mind). This is worth maindecking in many decks.

Note that it can function like an uncounterable Duress in Vintage so long as your opponent has played Force of Will or Mana Drain and can strip out the remaining ones and give you a peek at your opponents hand and library in the process.

Yes, the sheer versatility of the card is staggering.  At first I read the card without the split second line, but then when I saw that I was blown away.  Note that it is a translation from a Russian image, so it is not of course 100% verified.  Here's the picture if anyone speaks Russian:

Assuming the current translation is correct how will this card actually change the format?

Does this spell the end of Goblin Welder based decks? Can we expect CSlaver to reliably hardcast Slaver with protection? This card will demolish alot of decks even if only employed as a Wish target! Can Bomberman and Gifts survive this card? Certainly if nothing else both will be slowed by this card and further backed into a corner when this is coupled with Hide/Seek.

What if any effect will this have on ToA decks? Certainly the use of rituals early to set up becomes far more risky.

Really what decks are not effected by the nutering of their early game spells, most of which remain important the whole game, not to mention fetchlands, duals, wastes, and the complete destruction of card disadvantage tutors! As if we needed more reasons to not play Mystical and Vampiric.

I certainly hope this translation is not correct I just spent all weekend trading for the cards to build manaless Ichorid... now completely impotent if this card is printed! Oh well, I like change.

God I hope this is not the card. it would devestate my(only competitive Vintage) Oath deck. I suppose I could use it myself, but still.

duress, oath, root of evil.

counter oath, root of evil....

Sad

Yes,Tarmogoyf is probably better than Chameleon Colossus, but comparing it to Tarmogoyf is like comparing your girlfriend to Carmen Electra - one's versatile and reliable, the other's just big and cheap.(And you'd run both if you could get away with)

This card is absolutely ridiculous.  Hopefully something will change with this or Vintage will be going through it's own Planar Chaos.

The card is amazing for its cost. With Split Second it's nuts. If this card is true, I don't see how it can't be restricted in Vintage.

The bar would be set at Trinisphere: Not clearly dominating, but making people mad.

It's not Mind's Desire after all.

Still, it seems like scary news. (not BAD news, just scary)

And would someone change title to ROOT OF EVIL?

I can just see this in conjunction with Hide//Seek. Also, the spoiler on MTG Salvation has the name as "Extirpate."

Wow.  This seems insane.  And undercosted.  I can't believe this will be printed, but then again I thought Pithing Needle was just a silly rumor...

Remember that it only targets a card in a graveyard.  Basically it's a mini Haunting Echoes.  It's not the uncounterable Cabal Therapy + Extract that everyone seems to be making it out to be.  Still, at B it looks very promising.  There are a lot of potentially broken targets in Vintage alone: Wasteland, Dark Ritual, Mana Drain, Akroma, Dragon, just to name a few...

this card is brutal, it's a real beating vs the format imo.  the only thing it doesn't hit hard is turn 1 combo and fish.  but stealing fow from the fishes could be problematic.

Fish seems like the kind of deck that could really benefit from this card.

If this is actually going to be printed I think it will be a good thing for Vintage.  It's going to greatly reduce the brokenness of many of the current decks.  This should make room for plenty of fresh innovation in Vintage.

No immediate applications that come to mind but this may pave the way for some ultimate library manipulation (a la Doomsday) were it included in a deck with more than 40 Ravenous Rats.  Just a thought to keep on the backburner...

I just want to remind people of the fact while it might not seem so broken, remember its ONLY one black and it is uncounterable and unrespondable-to if thats a word.  You can do it in response to intuition AK, animating dragon, casting dread return, TRIGGERING an ichorid, and many many more things.  This is insane.

Sorry, I definitely got caught up in the excitement and started saying things that I shouldn't say.  Embarassed

Still, it's a very powerful effect for so little a cost.

The fact that it is so broken is actually going to be FAIR because then it might help get Gifts off its high horse that it's going to be on thanks to ETW.  I think ETW Gifts is going to become so popular right now thanks to Andy's win (congrats on that as well Andy) we NEED this to combat it.
