[Results, Lists and Pics] TO Report: All Combo Top 4 at Cary, NC

Location- Cary, NC at the Sports Zone: Saturday April 7th, 2007

We had 20 people show up for this tournament!! For me, this was the best tourney we’ve had so far. Lot’s of fun, and lot’s of great players with great decks. Thanks to everyone who came from out of state to make this happen. Without you guys these things wouldn't be possible. We did 5 rounds of swiss and $20 per person to play for an unlimited Timetwister, FBB Underground Sea, Mana Drain, Force of Will, Revised Tundra and $20 each in cash for 5th – 8th place. I’d also like to extent a HUGE thanks to 5 members of Arsenal who kindly donated $20 each to provide prizes for 5th – 8th place and let me base the prize structure off 20 people.

The metagame break down was:

3 Drain Tendrils
2 Control Slaver
1 Pitch Long
1 Grim Long
1 Gifts
1 Five Color Stax
1 MonoRed Stax
1 Workshop Aggro
1 Hide/Seek Control
1 W/B Fish
1 U/W Fish
1 UWB Fish
1 Sullivan Solution
1 Oath
1 Izzet Control (Xerox)
1 Masknought
1 Parfait

After 5 rounds of swiss, we cut to a top 8. Here were the standings:

Top 8
1. Jesse Pinchot with UWB Fish
2. Jarrod Keesling with Control Slaver
3. Chris Coppola with Grim Long
4. Andrew Polyniak with Sullivan Solution
5. David Earley with Pitch Long
6. George Goanos with Izzet Control (Xerox)
7. Cody Vinci with Drain Tendrils
8. Bert Kyle with Gifts

Congrats to David Earley for winning the Top 8 Prediction Contest for a Flooded Strand!!! He correctly predicted 6 of the top 8!!

Top 4
David Earley (Pitch Long) DEFEATS Andrew Polyniak (Sullivan Solution) [2-1]
Cody Vinci (Drain Tendrils) DEFEATS Jarrod Keesling (Control Slaver) [2-0]
Chris Coppola (Grim Long) DEFEATS George Goanos (Izzet Control) [2-0]
Bert Kyle (Gifts) DEFEATS Jesse Pinchot (UWB Fish) [2-0]

Brace yourselves… WE PLAYED PAST TOP 4!

Top 2
Chris Coppola (Grim Long) DEFEATS Cody Vinci (Drain Tendrils) [2-0]
David Earley (Pitch Long) DEFEATS Bert Kyle (Gifts) [2-0]

David and Chris split 1st/2nd place and get a Twister and FBB Sea. Cody and Bert play it out for 3rd place to see who gets the Drain.

3rd/4th Place
Cody Vinci (Drain Tendrils) DEFEATS Bert Kyle (Gifts) [2-1]

*On a side note, I lost 3 matches today with Drain Tendrils, which is equal to the number of matches I’ve lost in the last 9 tourneys I’ve played in (all with DT). Ironically, I still managed to top 4 and get 3rd. End side note.*

*****PICTURES*****

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you see this kid? Innocent? Kind? Honest? Loving? His name is Abe and he is NONE of these things.

Flashback to round 2 of swiss. I’ve won game one and I think I have game 2 wrapped up. I’m riding my Library of Alexandria in the control mirror and everything seems good. Abe comes up to our match and looks at Jarrod and says, “You should Demonic for Strip Mine.” Literally 10 seconds later, Jarrod casts Demonic Tutor. After some brief searching, a Strip Mine appears out of his deck. Abe didn’t look at his hand and claims he wasn’t even talking about our match and it was just the biggest coincidence of all time. I was still pissed off for about 2 minutes. Look at that picture. Can you stay mad at him for more than 2 minutes? I didn’t think so. But anyway…. I ended up losing the match and the losing continued after that. Also, Abe managed to sneak into quite a few of my pictures… see if you can spot him.

Here’s Abe telling Jarrod to Demonic Tutor for Strip Mine. Coincidentally, Demonic Tutor AND Strip Mine were Jarrod’s MVP cards of the day!

Abe deep in thought while playing Jesse Pinchot. Abe’s one of the best triatheletes in China and he plays Drain Tendrils! When you have a Billion people I guess anything is possible…

Jeremy Sauld of ICBM rocking Control Slaver with Isochron Scepter

Ben and Dave fighting it out

Ryan getting more pissed off as the day goes on. Losing to a kid probably wasn’t a good way to top things off.

David Earley looking all badass

BigP is crying as he imagines what TK is going to say about his SS modifications. Charlie and Abe laugh at him.

Ever lost to a 10 year old? Come to our tourneys!

Can you tell who’s in the middle of a match by the looks on their faces?

Everyone having a good time!

Thanks to everybody who came!  Pictures that I took, in addition to a possible tournament report, will be forthcoming.  Additionally, you left Mox Diamond out of my decklist. Wink

My favorite picture is the second one from the end with the huge counter war involving Time Walk and Izzet Guildmage trying to copy it.  At one point the question was asked "whose turn is it?".

I think someone should mention Andrew's surprise win against David in the top 8.

David was playing Pitch Long and Andrew was playing SS.  Andrew got an early Planar Void down so David played Empty the Warrens for 16 tokens or more.  I forget the exact number.  Anyway, Andrew was holding Mystical Tutor and Imperial Seal so he Mystical Tutors at end of turn.  He rifles through his deck several times and remarks:
It looks like I boarded out Echoing Truth.  He also had no Explosives.  Andrew puts Brainstorm on top.  At this point I considered the game over and walked away to do something more interesting.  I come back later to a what appears to be game 3.  This is impossible because Andrew had lost game one and was staring down 16 Goblin tokens with no answer to them in the previous game.

I was informed that Andrew had concocted some series of insane plays  involving Brainstorm, Imperial Seal, Black Lotus and Tendrils of Agony.  In the process he played some other spells and some how managed to storm for enough to beat David Early on the spot with Tendrils of Agony.  This did not involve Yawgmoth's Will as Andrew had a Planar Void out.  I was impressed!

Play of the day #2 was when George Cunning Wish for Twin Cast in response to a Yawg Will.  He then Twin Casted Yawg Will while he had Trickbind in the graveyard there by preventing the first Tendrils' copies from resolving.

That SS list looks pretty interesting, can anyone comment on the effectiveness of CB in there?

So once again Xerox makes another top 8 appearance. Good job with that deck, I really like the Guildmage tricks. When is the deck going to get any credit for being good? Ever?

Copying Time Walk. Cool.

All pictures are up. Let me know if you spot any errors.

@GrandInquisitor- I added the Massacre last minute-- thanks for spotting that.

Hopefully Andrew will comment on his SS deck.

@David- You should definitely write a report! This is probably your last tourney in this area.

I had fun at this tourney. The best part was beating Cody with his own deck in the rounds of swiss.

I will most likely write a report; I just have a lot to do.

Nitpick about the portrayal of my game 2 with Andrew:  The Mystical Tutor was not at end of turn because Xantid Swarm prevented him from playing spells.  Therefore, it was during his upkeep the turn he went off.

The picture where we were asked whose turn is it, is the last picture. The second to last pic was George's turn obv. because of him being able to cast Time Walk.  Both of those were insane counter wars that I barely won. The last picture kind went like this:

He plays ancestral recall with 7 cards left in his hand.  I respond by breaking one of my two fetches that are on the board. He responds by activating library. I respond to that by breaking my other fetch land and get Volcanic Island.  I REB his Ancestral still in response to the library activation. He Forces pitching Fire//Ice. I force back pitching Brainstorm.  On the stack currently is my FOW, his FOW, my REB, his Library Activation, My Fetchland, and his Ancestral. This where someone walks up and asks "whose turn is it?" while we are trying to figure what in the hell is goin with the stack. We respond with....Uhhh... Ummm...I'm not real sure...At a larger event we might have got warnings, but we just sat there and laughed about it until we figured it out.  That may be one of the reasons we went to time.  Who knows?

Here is Andrew Polyniak's comments about his top 8 SS deck with Counterbalance and Tendrils of Agony:

"To be honest, I only drew into counterbalance once the entire day. However, in that game, counterbalance was unbelievable. I had played a Sensei’s Divining Top earlier in the game, meaning that I had the combo online as soon as the counterbalance hit play. It turned the game around and gave me such a huge advantage that there was almost no way for me not to win. In that game, counterbalance countered 4-5 spells, all with a converted mana cost of two.

Also, the game that Bert is describing went like this:
Penultimate turn: Mystical tutor for Brainstorm during the upkeep. Draw. Pass the Turn.
David’s Turn: Attacks. He brings me down to a low enough level that I would die next turn. I don’t remember how many tokens he actually had, although I think it may have been only 10 or 12.
My last turn: Draw for turn. Play a Mox. Cast Trinket Mage. Find Black Lotus. Cast Lotus. Cast Imperial Seal finding Tendrils. Cast Brainstorm. Cast an extra Planar Void. Cast tendrils with Storm of 7 for 14 damage."

According to my game log, the life went from 16 to 6, so I must have had ten guys.  After that you go from 5 to 3.  I assume the 2 is Imperial Seal.  The last damage might be breaking a fetchland or something.  It's good you didn't go any lower, as I could have played Tendrils of Agony for 2 damage the previous turn, therefore preventing Andrew from doing what he did (well, maybe).

I didn't take notes for this tourney, but I'll write what I can remember. If I played against you please correct me or fill in details.

Round 1 - Brandon Todaro, Drain Tendrils

Game 1: I play first and cast timetwister. I upgrade his hand to two Mana Drains but I have enough gas to push through.
Game 2: He plays first and casts timetwister. He draws the combo.
Game 3: I play first and cast timetwister. My hand is better this time and I win quickly.

Round 2 - David Early, Pitch Long

Game 1: He plays first and Ancestrals into FoW, which counters my Ancestral. Then he seals for Desire and I go off before he gets a chance to play it.
Game 2: I play Bargain and win on turn 1.

Round 3 - Charlie Durham

Game 1: He plays first and says Island go. I play either Bargain or Will and win on turn 1.
Game 2: He plays first and says Tundra, Isamaru, go. I play Bargain and win on turn 1.

Round 4 - ID
Round 5 - ID

Top 8 - George Goanos, Izzet

Game 1: I think I get an early ancestral which allows me to Duress my way into the win.
Game 2: He has set up a big turn with Warrens, and I have to go off. I tutor up a second Tendrils to ensure I don't lose to permission.

Top 4 - Cody Vinci, Drain Tendrils

Game 1: He bluffs an early Drain and I don't want to risk going all in with LED on my turn 2. I keep some pressure on and go off as soon as I feel it is safe, and he doesn't have Drain.
Game 2: He plays first and makes 14 Goblin tokens. I make a Bargain on my turn and win.

Finals - David Early, Pitch Long
David readily agrees to split with me and I get a FBB Sea and some cash.

Thanks again to everyone who showed up.

Machinus congrats on the finish, I was wondering what matchups you brought the Orim's Chant's in against as that has been a point of contention between me and some other Long players.  I like how there were only 2 Long decks in the room and they split 1st/2nd, combo is some good.  Nice pics btw.

I used chant against two strategies: storm wins, and counterspells. I think it is better than duress against counters because they are forced to pay for two counterspells to stop your threat, whereas they only have to pay for one with Duress. I also think it's solid against storm since you can respond to all kinds of spells that generate mana/cards and prevent your opponent from going off.

Thanks for the great and ever improving effort in the pics department!  Pics get addicting, don't they?
People in my meta say they always appreciate the spruced up pics in tournies, and I am sure you get the same response.
Vintage (in America at least) is a self run community, and we don't get Pro Tour Cards (except for maybe LSV someday), but we do get cool self run tourneys with pics and analysis.  Thanks again for upping the ante.

This sounds like the best game ever! Smile

I played Drain Tendrils going 2-3. This is the second tourney for me, having just picked up Vintage recently.

Round 1 : Jesse Pinchot, UWB Fish
Won game 1 with either EtW, Tendrils (memory is fuzzy, damn you Cody), lost Game 2 & 3.

Highlight - Jesse consulting 80% of his deck away for Bob. Nearly decking himself at the end, he eventually kept Jotun out long enoughto beat my face in.

Round 2 : Steven Goanos, Oath
Won game 1 with EtW, Won Game 2 with Tinker, Colossus.

Highlight - I cast Intuition during Steven's end step for 3 AKs, with 1 AK already in the yard. On my turn, I lead with Ancestral Recall, which resolves. Then I cast AK for 4. Just a stupid hand. Which is okay, because I lost to some later.

Round 3 : David Earley, Pitch long
Won game 1 with Tendrils. Mulliganed in Game 2, lost eventually because I never saw another mana source until too late. Game 3, was pretty amazing.

Highlight - In game 3, David baited a counter to resolve Xantid, then a few turns later he casts Yawg Bargain. He bargained to 1 life, drawing about 18 or so cards; cracked a memory jar, still unable to find Tendrils. In desperation, he Brainstorms and finds the Tendrils kill. Sick.

Round 4 : Conceded to CodI Vinci, Drain Tendrils
Wasn't in the mood to play the mirror...lol.

Round 5: Dave Dave Dave the Babe! Playing jank.dec, j/k.
Won Game 1 & Game 2 with either EtW or Tendrils, can't remember.

Highlight - Dave thought he was cute by cutting my deck giving me the bottom 7 cards, giving me Ancestral Recall in the opening hand. In the next game, he cut my deck giving me another opening hand with Ancestral Recall. Thanks Dave. <3

Makes me sad to look at the pictures and count the score as being:

Mishra's Workshop appearances: 0
Birds of FRIGGIN PARADISE: 2

What is the disagreement?
