This is a side event right?

The main event of vintage worlds doesn't happen until later today I believe.

Usually legacy and vintage champs don't run side by side so I know Rich would vintage if he only had to pick one.

Thanks for the updates anyway, sounds like an interesting side tourney.

Possibly. He didn't specify, but I do remember that the main events were usually on Saturday and not Friday.

Just got back.

I top 8ed both the legacy champs PRELIM yesterday and the vintage champs PRELIM today.  I lost in the first round of each.

Rich was winning in the legcay champs and so didnt get into the vintage prelim.  He ended up going 6-1-1 and finishing 10th on tiebreaks after going 6-1-1 and finishing 9th on breakers yesterday in the Time Spiral Block Constructed Champs. Sad

When I left it was Seroogy vs Kolowith and Steve M vs. guy with shop.Magus of the moon.dec for the two round bye.

More updates to come.

I know this is about Vintage mostly, but I do have some info on the Legacy event, the real one.

1st Place = Peter aka DicemanX
2nd Place = Ryan Trepanier
4th Place = David Caplan aka Goobafish (lost to Peter)

Couldn't get decklists phone call was long distance but I believe David was playing U/G/R Threshhold.  More info to be posted as it comes in.

Top 8:
1st Alex ?????
2nd nicholas calcaterra
3rd rich shay
4th steve menndian
5th ray robillard
6th steve conway
7th richard mattiuzzo
8th vicent forino

Alex Gws Long vs. Vincent  forino tendrils deck with main bob, nights whisper, bazaar, therapy

Smmenen Growatog vs Ray Stax

Rish Shay Growatog vs steve conway stax

Nicholas calcaterra Ichorid vs richard mattiuzzo landstill

So no Flash, but 2 tendrils and 1 Ichorid....strange.

Both GAT decks are matched up vs. Stax, so that should be interesting.

Bazaar Storm in the top 8!!!!

just got off the phone with Ray, he lost in a close three to Steve. not too sure about the other matchups, I believe he said Shay was in the finals, and he would be playing the winner of Vincent and Steve so we may see the GAT on GAT finals.

Rich just called me and is waiting for his finals match.  He beat Ichorid in top 4, the same one that beat him in the swiss.  The phone call went like this:

Rich: Steve just got completely blown out game one by Vicent Forino
Me: You think you have a good match on him?
Rich: No idea.  Steve's playing the exact same deck as me so if he loses I should probably be worried.
Me: Can you offer a split?
Rich: There is no split.
Me: What's first get?
Rich: A painting.
Me: What's second get?
Rich: Probably a booster pack.
Rich: Steve just pointed at me and said he wants to face me in finals.  I don't know if I should be creeped out by that or not.
Me: Lol.  Good luck.

More to come when I get it.

My sources conflict with Dave saying Steve won game 1.

Quote from: Kevin Brewer
Finals is Rich Shay, and Steve was paired against Vincent with the IGG deck, and was up 1-0. The matchup is in his favor (Vincent has no Xantids), so he'll probably win too.

It's about time Shay made it into the top 8 of a Vintage Champs.  He was overdue.  So was Ray

No Flash in the top 8?  2 Tendrils decks?  What the hell happened there?

Did Goblins show up--if so that's why Tendrils could cruise.

The Steve/TK match had to be epic.

I wonder what the DCI is thinking of their unrestricting Gush.

Steve had his camera last year, I wonder if he has it again this year (I'm sure he'd like footage for himself at the very least).  If not, well... that sucks, this has gotta be the match of the year

I wonder what the DCI is thinking of their unrestricting Gush.

With his domination of New England Vintage since returning to the Magic world, I'd consider Rich to be the top player in the world.  I do not know Steve personally, but many consider him to be one of the worlds best.  With two of the best in the world facing each other in the finals, we are going to have a deserving champion.

The varied top 8 is good to see.  2 GAT, 2 Stax, 2 Tendrils variants, Ichorid, Landstill is perfectly split among deck types.  I am thrilled to see such an excellent result in the face of the recent complaining I've been hearing.  The best players with decks they are best with are winning, which is what should happen at the end of any tournament.

Agreed, the top 8 of both the Prelim and Champs were full of very strong, well known players.  That strikes me as the sign of a good place for the format to be.

The finals are between two GAT decks, I don't know exactly what your getting at past 'play something else if you want to make T8 and scoop to somebody good with GAT'. : Wink

To be fair, Rich is pretty much the best player in Vintage at the moment, and Steve can't be that far behind.  Its not like some random average GAT players blew the rest of the top 8 out, it's two of the absolute best in Vintage playing what is probably the best deck.  I would pick Steve and Rich to be the last two standing in that top 8 every time.
