Team Vacaville

The last time I went to a Tyler Daykin sponsered tourney, it was called (I think Deck Fest (or Mana Fest) and was held in a casino in Reno and Webster pwned a field of 58ish for a Mox Jet.

When I heard that an UNLIMITED PROXY memorial tourney was being held on Sept 1 in honor of the recently deceased Glen Angus, and that all of the entry fees would go to Glen's family/children, I was actually kinda moved.

On Thursday, I got word that I could take the day off so Team Vacaville represented. Then I wondered, what kind of field would there be if it was NO LIMIT PROXIES?!?!? My sideboard would definately have to wait until we got the and saw the field.

However, only 13 showed up for such a great prize/opportunity, so there goes the global impact to the meta.

But in honor of Glen, and in appreciation of Tyler and Tyler's mom Bianca for coughing up the Mox GLADLY, and thoroughly enjoying themselves at the event (EVERYONE had a blast!), here are the top 4 decklists for those who like decklists.

4 Rounds of Swiss followed by cut to top 4.

(I jacked the lists from Tyler, so this is my first non cut/paste posting of lists. (Tobi will undoubtedly catch any errors Smile )

Some notes:
Austin assembles his decks in the card on the ride up to these things.  His idea of using Empty the Warrens main was as an answer to Leyline main (as in win now or soon in spite of leyline). Wheel of Fortune was never cast ever (he could, but chose not to every time), so it is now ETW#2

My SB: Platinum ANgel sucks. I know. It is gone. I just had to rush to get the SB settled on, and I just fleshed out the "Staxy" lock peices to deal with a potentiall "scrub" meta (meaning I didn't know half the field. They might be newbs for all I know. No Ochoa or Luis, you know? No offence intended to anyone).

Round 3: Kevin had nothing on field. Whoot! (random pic, really!)

Zac's Bomberman vs Richie's, uh, Fish? MaskNaught?

Junior kicking Cory's Dragon deck in the NUTS with a GATtline gun PWN MOFO! Whoot!

(ok, Junior got 1st turn FastBond both games. Barooken! Whoot! Junior got Flashed by Flash.dec later.

Team Vacaville had a relatively easy ride to top 4 due to Austin getting a bye round 1, Junior and myself getting paired up round 1 (ID), and I faced a newcomer to the vintage scene round 2 (no proxies, just belives in using his own cards. Black Vice deck). I had to actually fight round 3 (versus Kevin, and I won barely in 3) and got paired up against Austin round 4 and he scooped to me ensuring that we both got in. Both semi finals games were I.N.T.E.N.S.E. games played to 3 rounds each!

Anyways Kudos to Tyler and Bianca and team Scrubby Bubbles for making this happen for such a great cause.
Props to Bianca for buying like 6 Pizzas for the tourney! Whoot!
Props to Kevin for winning not just his FIRST EVER PEICE OF POWER, but an Alpha Sapphire to boot! and Zac for pwning his way to 2nd. Kevin and Zac had to fight all six rounds, as opposed to Austin and my 2-3 rounds.
Props to Circus Circus for not jacking my money at the BlackJack tables, but instead giving me $40 to cover entry fee, some smokes, and Diet Coke/food,etc! Love this town!

Slops: No slops, this was for Glen. That's right, not even slops to the bicicaly security guards trying to bust Austin and Junior for Attemped Deckbuilding In A Car on Level 6 of the Circus Circus Parking Garage Unattended by an Adult Cuz Said Addult was playing BlackJack. No, not even slops to them. Smile

Decklists will be modified soon to be more organized. My list is organized because that's how I separate my deck for decklists. Everyone else was some degree of sloppy. I haven't slept since noon Friday so I'll deal with that later.

Some token pics soon (tonight)

If anyone wants the WHOLE story (the FULL report, even though it's for this small tourney, PM me and I will send you one by PM as I enjoy doing them.

Final slew of pics/commentary

Junior (GAT) vs Cory (Dragon) two 1st turn FastBonds, biatch! 2-0

Glen Angus. Whoever took original pic lost the poster pic that this pic would show if this pic would pic pics.

Pic of Zac's opening hand game 1 on the play (I have 60ish shots of the finals, pretty much every single play, if ANYONE wants to see it, lemme know, otherwise, enjoy what you got!)

Kevin's 4ft Straw into his 1 Gallon Cafeine dispensor unit. Not a hooka.

Cory never thought he would get ass-raped by a 15 year old mexican kid, but here's proof.

Of course, all of Team Vacaville are damn cheaters during Yawg Will turns.

This is a game I won vs Kevin. The Pain!

Guess who has echoing truth to save the day?

The "D&D Miniatures" crowd having a blast.

Keeping Flash in check...

Nothing interesting here, but this is the angle Junior shot this pic at. Why? I don't know, but it just looks "angular".

That tourney is such a great cause.  Very disappointing to see only 13 showed up =(

Glad to see that it was still a fun time from what I can tell.

It never dawned on me that mindslaver could be very effective in stax.  I never saw Roland or Travis or anyone else try it out so I just assumed it wasn't worth it...
but now that I see it in the winning list it makes me wonder why no one used it earlier.  Random slaver to tinker/weld/power out with shop seems just too good not to use.

Lotushead seems to have had continued success with Travis.deck.  How this is I do not know ;p  But keep it up Wink

Again thanks for the pics and commentary.  It blows my mind that only 13 showed up.  Although I never could attend due to it being on the other side of the country, maybe more people would show up if a second one was held?  You simply can't have a better reason to hold a tourney than this one.

I think Web didn't want to travel 4++ hours for a tourney.  Luis had a wedding to attend to, while I was moving out of my old place.  The GP took a huge toll from us (Web was in contention till the 2nd to the last round and I day 2'ed, 9 round day 1), maybe less so of Luis because he won it.  Other than the GP, the week before was the Lotus, and etc etc etc; we needed a break.  And we were glad we took it, so did........ ^^"

But regardless, great tourney, too bad we didn't make it Sad Pics are always nice, thanks Jeff.

Great job on the report/pics as always. Team Lincoln didn't make it because I was doing on walk thru on my old place and recovering from a week of moving. D'oh only 1x on my team so far. Keep up those reports!

A lot of guys weren't able to show up, but it was still a lot of fun. I was going to play Scrubby Long, but I had my son's baptism that was happening and I had to leave by 5:00. Since I figured there was no way I'd be able to play in top 4 because of time constraints, I threw Dragon together for fun (it's my favorite deck ever, but a HORRIBLE choice in this metagame). I played Bomberman first round (bad matchup #1) and got rolled. I played Tog second round (badder matchup than bad matchup #1) and got rolled again.  Flame edited.  -DA  I got the bye in round three and played John Stocks for fun. He was playing Solution (baddest matchup of the day) and I got spanked during the bye round. In round four I faced the resident Reno Mexican, ST and FINALLY wrecked some shop (he tried to steal my bike during the round, though, so the win was bittersweet)!!!

As it turns out, the tournament was done and we had walked out the door by 4:20, so I could have at least tried to have been competetive. Kevin played well, though and deserved the win (though I almost wet myself when he adjusted his Lotus while figuring out what to sac to Smokestack; I thought he was giving the match away for a second). The Tahoe Crew has come a LONG way since they showed up amazed that I played decks that won on turns one of two.

Here are the obligatory props/slops (in reverse order):

Slops:

Carl for not knowing that Pact of Negation costs five with four mana in play and a mox still in hand. Smile

John A. for complaining instead of calling a judge. You're playing for power, son; don't give it away and grumble. You were in top 4 if you spoke up.

Tyler for being a bad player. Smile

I'll leave the other slop alone in the interest of sportsmanship, but he knows who he is.

Props:

Kevin at Heroes and Dave at Hit & Run for supporting a great tournament.

Tahoe Kevin for pulling it out and having a GREAT day of play. I only saw two little play mistakes all day. BIG UPS TO THE TAHOE CREW!!! (Slops for that damned straw, though; WTF is up with that thing???)

Errin for insisting on playing his own deck and always being a good sport.

Jeff for his willingness to chronicle the Vintage adventures on the (too often forgotten) West Coast.

My son Jeffrey- I hate losing at Magic, but I was glad to play the wrong deck to know I could be there for your baptism. I love you, buddy.

Wow.  You're a parent and you think it's appropriate to make that sort of remark in public?  On TMD at least, it won't be tolerated.  Full Warning for violation of Rule 2, Inflammatory Posting (flames).  -DA

I'd totally be willing to run another memorial tourney to get better attendance. We didn't even raise $500 and would have made more for the family just scrapping the tourney and selling the mox on eBay. If the rest of Team Scrubby Bubbles were up to it, we could do it again (we'd probably have to charge a little more for entry to pay for the mox this time, though; I wouldn't ask Bianca for such amazing generousity again).

Verbal warning to Lunar for his remarks in a post I deleted.  You guys should know better than to let the discussion sink to these levels.  -DA
