Fair enough; the Atlanta airport was only bad for me the two times that I've been there, and both were supposedly due to weather delays from earlier in the day.

In conclusion: Traffic sucks in Atlanta, but it could be worse. Airports frequently suck, especially around holidays.

Well, I'll go ahead and welcome you to the South, too.  If you ever find yourself in the New Orleans area, stop on by.

Regarding speeding tickets:
My advice is to get a southern plate as soon as possible.  When we moved from Cali to NC my mom got something like 4 tickets in six months before getting an NC plate.  After that she only got about a ticket every year or two.

Generally on the Interstates they tend to be more lenient, but in town you should stay within 5 mph of the speed limit.
On the interstate I generally aim for 8 over and most folks go about 10 over.

has your mom ever considered going the speed limit?

the world's in such a damn hurry.

most people do aim for 5-9 over. on interstates it seems up to 20 over is fair game.

Well I'm all settled in, thanks for all the responses!  I might try and make it to legacy on wednesday, and I think I'm going to try and hunt down the gaming pit this afternoon, just to get my bearings.  Any other weeklys I should know about? where can I find a draft? where are the best FNMs?  Unrelated, any suggestions on cheap, local places to get lunch would be greatly appreciated Very Happy ... I hope to meet some of the gamers down here soon!

Wow. 142 years and spare change after Atlanta fell to Union forces, Andy moves there. (I know this because it fell on my birthday. Or you know, on the same date, anyway). It is a little known fact - at least over here - that it was not Union troops, but Confederate troops that burned Atlanta, so that Union troops would not get anything of use. Having been to Atlanta once, I am of the opinion that they succeeded. But now they have Brassy, who will no doubt soon reenact that quaint little piece of history!

That, Bram, was the most eloquent two lines I have ever read on The Mana Drain.

I don't mean to nitpick, but I'm a History major and I've studied the American Civil War ad nauseam and I noticed that this was directly contrary to my understanding of the situation. I tapped into a number of credible online resources

From http://www.history.com/minisite.do?content_type=Minisite_Generic&content_type_id=632&display_order=3&sub_display_order=6&mini_id=1074
Quote
On November 15, Sherman began his march to the sea. Leaving Atlanta in flames, his army of 60,000 men moved virtually unopposed through Georgia on a 96-km (60-mi) front. Living off the land as they advanced, the Union troops systematically destroyed anything that might help sustain the Confederate war effort.

A copy of his reply to an appeal of an evacuation letter by the mayor of Atlanta can be found here: http://www.sewanee.edu/faculty/Willis/Civil_War/documents/ShermanMayor.html and he indicates that he has every intention of destroying the city he currently occupies.

Perhaps you've confused the situation with that of Columbia SC?

Quote
Sherman turns north: Having seized Savannah, and undeterred by relentless rain, rugged terrain, or sporadic resistance, Sherman ordered his Union armies to move into South Carolina on January 17. They laid waste to much of the state where the rebellion began and reached its capital, Columbia, in less than a month. Southerners blamed Sherman for setting Columbia ablaze, although the fire seems to have begun among cotton bales lit by retreating rebel cavalry before his army ever reached the city. In any case, Sherman said, "Though I never ordered it, and never wished it, I have never shed any tears over the event, because I believe that it hastened what we all fought for, the end of the war."

I have WAY too much time on my hands...

It seems both sides liked to lay waste to cities:

Quote
On September 1, 1864, Confederate General John Bell Hood evacuated Atlanta after a four-month siege mounted by Union General William T. Sherman and ordered all public buildings and possible Confederate assets destroyed. The next day, Mayor James Calhoun surrendered the city, and on September 7 Sherman ordered the civilian population to evacuate. He then ordered Atlanta burned to the ground on November 11 in preparation for his punitive march south.

From elsewhere:

Quote
On the night of September 1, Hood evacuated Atlanta, burning military supplies and installations, causing a great conflagration in the city (the dramatic fire scenes depicted in the 1939 film Gone with the Wind).

So basically, union troops burnt down whatever confederate ones hadn't already ^^

I've seen plenty of thread hijacks before, but stealing a goodbye and goodluck thread to argue over events almost 150 years ago?  That's got to be a first  Smile

Hah! That's nothing! Watch in horror as I hijack your very post. The Dutch Thread Hijacking Team has been inactive for far too long! Huzzah!

Andy, good luck in Atlanta.  My company sends me down there for a trade show every year and to be honest, I love visiting Atlanta.  I've thought of moving down there many times.  Awesome weather, great food, nice people, an all around relaxed-southern atmosphere.  It's like an upgraded version of Boston.

So, Andy's in Atlanta for like what?  Two or Three weeks?  and he's already top8ing our tournaments like he owns the place...

Though, apparantly Ichorid is some good against GAT :p

Good to meet you Brassy, we should throw some cardboard around sometime, especially when Anusien's in town and Zherbus doesn't decide that there's more important things than a mox tournament.

I honestly didn't think Atlanta would ever have had so many quality vintage players...
