Eudemonia Mox Emerald Tournament (4/20)

Day 2 of the Shadowmoor prerelease was the likely culprit to the low turnout. Fifteen people showed up to duel for the best looking unlimited mox emerald that I have seen given away as a prize (probably PSA 8/8.5). There were four rounds of swiss followed by a cut to top 4. The top 4, in no particular order included:

Mike Klemic (Deez Noughts)
Austin Martinez (Tyrant Oath)
Cory Redmond (UR Landstill)
David Ochoa (Doomsday)

Decklists should be up at Eudemonia's web site in the near future.

Top 4:
David Ochoa (Doomsday) defeats Austin Martinez (Tyrant Oath) 2-0
Mike Klemic (Deez Noughts) defeats Cory Redmond (UR Landstill) 2-1

Top 2:
Split.

Here is the list that I used:

Doomsday:
4 brainstorm
4 ponder
4 gush

4 force of will
1 misdirection
1 chain of vapor
4 duress
1 thoughtseize

3 merchant scroll
1 demonic tutor
1 mystical tutor
1 vampiric tutor

1 ancestral recall
1 fastbond
1 time walk
2 doomsday
1 necropotence
1 yawgmoth's will

1 research/development
1 tendrils of agony

4 dark ritual
1 black lotus
1 lotus petal
1 mox jet
1 mox sapphire

2 flooded strand
4 polluted delta
3 island
1 tropical island
4 underground sea

Sideboard:
4 leyline of the void
4 dark confidant
1 swamp
1 research/development
1 thoughtseize
1 hurkyl's recall
1 tendrils of agony
1 tormod's crypt
1 engineered explosives

The list is obviously taylored for a low-workshop meta so before anyone tries to preach nonsense to me about only running chain of vapor in the main, don't assume that I didn't know what the meta was going to look like. Rather, praise me on my godlike clairvoyance; that would work out better for all parties involved.

Any participants, please feel free to post reports/photos/decklists/experiences here about the tournament.

Congratulations.  Was there any Flash?

There were five people that I know of who played flash.

Rather, praise me on my godlike clairvoyance; that would work out better for all parties involved.

I spit out my drink. Very Happy

I have to let people see my personality sometimes. I must use caution though otherwise the world would curl up on the floor in a fetal position dying of laughter from my jests.

If someone was taking notes during the tourney, I'd really like to see how the matches played out.

@ David:  I was really hopping you would have been able to write out a semi detailed match by match report.  Seeing as NLD is just released, I would have loved to see it in action and illuminate the differences between it and TTS.  All the same, good on you for the split.

"I said, no." ^^

I took some pictures for the tourney as Lotushead wasn't able to show up.  I will upload them and post them on here sometime in the future.  "In the near future"

15 people, exactly 5 played Flash.  No Ichorid was present, 3x Doomsday, 5x Flash, 1 Oath, 1 Landstill, 1 Salvagers, 2 u/w/b Fish (represent!) 1 Stax (weird stuffs in it though), and I forgot what was the last one. One of the u/w/b Fish (Campee on TMD) got 5th due to TB.  ><

I had some unbelievable draws in the tourney, such as no lands on first twenty cards I drew.

And I would like to point out that I think I might have seen the shortest post posted by Huantedechos.

Congratz on your finish with this new deck,

How did Necropotence work for you during the  day, I myself had often the problem to fizzle with Necro is this and other Gushstorm decks.

Did you miss Timetwister in you deck or didn't you. The reasson that i ask this is because I'm not sure if it belongs in NLD or not.

Further more I'm very interested in een match report if you have the notes to make them.

Greetz Arjan from The Nederlands (For short this is NLD, thats why i like this name so much)

Necro is awesome just like usual. The deck has more tutors than most other gush-based combo decks since doomsday is a tutor itself which helps the problem of drawing into nothing.

I never wanted to run timetwister in this deck even though I am usually the person who advocates for it amongst friends. I wanted to focus on non-symetrical card advantage first before looking at other cards.

I didn't take any notes from the tournament and the matches are a bit more blury than usual so I'm affraid a tournament report will be out of the question this time.

I'm still unsure about the 4th ponder vs the 4th scroll. One was cut for time walk. I'm afraid I may have been wrong in my decision.

Congrats, Web, on yet another great finish. Good to see Norcal Vintage going strong! Wish I could be back in NorCal to partake Sad

Oh, and because Albert rudely failed to do so, I will be the first on this thread to compliment you on your "godlike clairvoyance." And really, dying of laughter isn't such a bad way to go...

I really felt like my Fish deck was going to be excellent in this tournament. Missing the top 4 on tie breaks was a real heart breaker. Well, there's always next time.

Just for correctness sake, I wasn't playing Doomsday, just TTS with a single Doomsday in the main. Interestingly, my Doomsday seemed to be more useful than Web/LSV's. In one match I drew it and had no intention of casting it, but it got hit by a Duress anyway, taking the bullet for one of my better cards. Then in game 3 of that match I tried to make the "Win through a Leyline pile" but my inexperience with the card and my general scrubbiness combined to help me misbuild the pile and I lost anyway. Que sera, sera.

Also, I think the 15th deck in your meta-breakdown is Klemic's Deeznaughts.

Pics! Stealing tech from Team Vacaville is tech! Smile

Thanks for putting up great tourney reports in my absense.  My job gave me a $2.25 per hour raise because I am irreplacable at the moment, so T1 on Sundays is put on hold for me for a while.

As this is relevent to the NorCal Scene, Austin and Junior went to the Woodland tourney today (8 attending as it's sandwiched in between 2 other tourneys) and Junior split with someone (Junior's first "Win").  Then venue was nice (I picked them up after work), and the place could seat comfortably at least 20 players (ie, total re-structure of the site), and plenty of T1 staples are availiable for sale etc.  Basically, much improved over the last version of the venue.

Again, thanks for pics, I hope to be online regularily within two weeks or so...

I was the person Junior split with in the finals (also my first "win") after beating Austin in the semis. Not that 8 people is enough to determine anything off, but the meta was:
1 Tyrant Oath
1 Flash
1 Mana Ichorid
1 Goblins
4 Storm Combo decks (2, I believe, were NLD, I was on TTS, and the other had Tolarian Academy, but I think he had 0 Gush)

I would like to thank Bob Maher for helping me to some sort of victory, as he is a total effing house.

"4 Storm Combo decks (2, I believe, were NLD, I was on TTS, and the other had Tolarian Academy, but I think he had 0 Gush)"

I played Storm Combo w/ an Academy (I ran the GushBond combo though), perhaps I played you Rd. 3 for the chance into the T4? GJ on your's and Juniors split.

Store seemed alright, wish there would have been more player's/rounds but it was fun none-the-less. I got to Misdirect a Pact that was aimed at my FoW to his Flash, so at least my Misdirections did something.

Yeah, we played in rd 3. And, now that you mention it, I remember seeing Gush and Fastbond in play against me in that match.

The low turnout was unfortunate, but I thought the event itself was pretty well run and the store was nice. The TO said that they'll hold more t1 whenever they get appropriate cards to put up as prizes and I, for one, will be willing to head back out there.
