My "Not So Good Tournament Report" to a not so good tournament turn out  Sad

Only 4 People showed up Monday night, and while Jessie and Bill were getting pizza/hoping other people would show up, I made the mistake of convincing someone hanging out there, who plays Legacy, to just play their Legacy deck and see how it goes, because looking at it, it would probably beat the Meta we've been having. So we were up to 5 people, woot...  Sad . So everyone plays everyone with no time limits and every gets a bye, is what we decided on. Top 4 get prizes as usual, so odds of going home with something versus nothing were pretty good  Very Happy

Round 1 Me vs (Kid whose name I forget, that I convinced to play) piloting Red Deck Wins, Legacy Version

Game 1
I turn 2 tinker for Sundering Titan, Tinkering a Mox and blowing up his Mountain and my Island putting him on a short clock and leaving me with an Island. Unfortunetly he's playing Red Deck Wins, and literally wins, the turn before I do. I only manage to draw a couple cards off a Capsule and Force of Will a burn spell to lessen the damage to non-lethal the turn prior to the turn he won, during that game.

Game 2
He burns my face off in about 4-5 turns and I don't do much of anything except tell him "See told you, you would beat the Meta"
1-1

Round 2 Me vs Eric Dupuis piloting Etherium Slaver

I unfortunetly can't remember much of this matchup except for a few key points. I remember I won it 2-1, and one if not both of the games was because I had an early Gorilla Shaman, Heretic and/or Welder. I remember basically throwing the matchup away, cuz I'm queitly a hyper person, by: Not discard TWICE after resolving two seperate Thirst for Knowledge's, dropping the top card of my library on the floor when I drew a card, and by flipping the bottom card face up when taking back my deck from being shuffled by Eric. So big props to Eric for just not throwing game/match losses at me for being a tool, and instead making it a learning experience by at least reminding me that I should be more careful, because in normal tournaments, I won't be as fortunate.
2-1

Round 3 Me vs Jessie Martin piloting Etherium Slaver

Unfortunetly, same deal here, but for a different reason. I can't remember this matchup either, but because our match took 1hr 20mins!!! I remember Jessie won it and I believe 2-1. Game 1 took the longest I think I recall, ending in around 40 mins and then the next 2 games were about 15-20 mins each.
2-2

Round 4 Me vs Bill piloting Bill's Homebrew

Bill ended up leaving instead because he was x-0, so I was given a sweep  Sad Sucks I kinda looked forward to not playing against Slaver.
3-2

Results

1st ? with Red Deck Wins
2nd Eric with Etherium Slaver
2nd Jessie with Etherium Slaver
2nd Chris with Etherium Slaver
5th Bill with Bill's Homebrew

The results ended like they did because the kid playing RDW went undefeated in matches (as I predicted) so he was obviously 1st. But the rest was because after me and Eric played some long games of Slaver mirror and then me and Jessie played a really long Slaver mirror match, no one really wanted to play anymore, nevermind another really long Slaver mirror. So after some thought we realized IF Jessie beat Eric we'd have a 3-way tie for 2nd. So, because Eric is awesome (lol), he agreed to just take the hit and do a 3-way split for 2nd.

Even in this small tournament environment, I've managed to enhance my play skills, which I am happy about. I've learned I've really gotta slow down a little physically with handling my deck and as well with resolving spells in their fullest. All in all, good overall tournament and really, I'm just happy to be playing some Type 1.  Very Happy

we had a good turnout, with about 10 players, lets keep it going guys!

an overall good time was had, a great learning experience for me, especially when i "learned" that rich shay had that 3rd blue card in his hand when he proceeded to live the dream and commandeer my tinker lol  i just wanted to find out what that 3rd mystery card was, i just couldnt wait haha =[

^^^^ I got to "live the dream" as well and dismantle the meta a lil, playing TPS lol. Damn homebrew's though. Lol. Getting 1st after deciding not to be the 3rd slaver player, literally 3 mins before the start, was intersting. Also building a SB from scratch in that same 3 mins was interesting too, considering some of the cards thrown in were absolutely garbage and I just needed to get to 15 lol.

? playing Goblins 1-0
Bill playing Bill's homebrew 1-0-1
Eric playing Etherium Slaver 2-0-1
Rich playing Etherium Slaver variant 3-0-1

As usual thank you Eric for the great learning experience, and helping me and others to become better players. Oh and.......stop beating me in draft.

Top 4, but do realize he had a bye round 1, and it was only 3 rounds of swiss due to a slightly lower turnout than usual.  I think he drew in the final round as well.  Don't want to take anything away from the deck, as it was a blast to watch and he did beat a good player in the round he played.

I just wanted to add here that I went by last night to play, and I was pretty impressed.  10 players on a weeknight and it was a great meta with top quality vintage lists, and players who had seemingly a good amount of experience with their decks. In my four rounds I played against Slaver, TPS, Salvager (a good list), and Slaver.  So quality stuff.  If anyone is in the area I'd check it out, it's more of a casual local type night but those can be a lot of fun, especially with top decks like this.  It was really good practice.

Last two weeks were fun playing in this, too bad I'm going to be out in CA for a couple months for my senior project.  I suppose I finally know what people mean about T1 when they say they can play (mostly) the same deck after leaving for a couple months and still do well.  Its also nice to see people again.

Hope its still running in March!

Eric. Buddy. Pal. Please. We're begging you for tourney results here. Its so much more fun to see your name in "lights". For the past couple events, if ya could, please. Personally, I'd like to start seeing deck break down too. Like for last night I believe it was:

3 Tezzeret Control
2 Tezzeret Control Welder
1 Ichorid
1 G/W Fish
1 Whatever you were playing (Eric)

I ran into snags with the internet access.  I'll try a different approach next week.

1   Jesse Martin    Tezzeret Control Welder
2   Barry Everson     Ichorid featuring Fatestitcher (Now Dredge cares even less about counterspells!)
3   Nick Vallis  G/W Zoo with Gaddock Teeg, Mindcensor, Canonist and StP
4   Eric Dupuis    Tezzeret Control Welder

We don't do decklists on Monday Nights, but I can post what I use:

// Lands
    2 Flooded Strand
    3 Island
    1 Library of Alexandria
    2 Polluted Delta
    1 Tolarian Academy
    3 Underground Sea
    3 Volcanic Island

// Creatures
    3 Goblin Welder
    1 Gorilla Shaman
    1 Triskelion

// Spells
    1 Ancestral Recall
    1 Black Lotus
    1 Brainstorm
    1 Demonic Tutor
    4 Duress
    1 Fact or Fiction
    4 Force of Will
    1 Gifts Ungiven
    1 Mana Crypt
    4 Mana Drain
    1 Mana Vault
    1 Merchant Scroll
    1 Mox Emerald
    1 Mox Jet
    1 Mox Pearl
    1 Mox Ruby
    1 Mox Sapphire
    1 Mystical Tutor
    1 Sol Ring
    1 Tezzeret, The Seeker
    4 Thirst for Knowledge
    1 Time Vault
    1 Time Walk
    1 Tinker
    1 Tormod's Crypt
    1 Vampiric Tutor
    1 Voltaic Key
    1 Yawgmoth's Will

The deck has Welder where other decks have cards like Echoing Truth and Engineered Explosives.  This allows for disruption vs artifacts, especially combined with Gorilla Shaman.  Welder also allows you to assemble the combo directly through disruption such as counters, discard or even Chalices.  I'd really like to fit Sensei's Top and the 2nd Tezzeret back in, so this deck is definitely a work in progress.  I use Triskelion for his synergy with Welder, as well as additional disruption he provides.  I think the ability to use more dynamic cards for disruption as opposed to dedicated cards like E. Truth is a solid game plan, but I am currently sacrificing a little bit of consistency (less filtering) and a little bit of power (no DSC only 1 Tez).  My sideboard is literally haphazard, so I won't bother with it.  In these colors, there are tons of options, so there's no reason one shouldn't be able to shore up bad match ups with the SB.

When talking to TAL about incorporating duress effects (which I find extremely strong right now) he mentioned they couldn't really work (maindeck) because of the early game demand for red and black mana.  Have you had trouble with this?

Can you at least divulge whether your SB had master of etherium?  I've had widely different results with him maindeck depending on the supporting cast and/or matchup, but I'm curious if the more experienced players like him as a on-color, low-cost hedge against slaver's traditional enemies.

Thanks.

@ Barry

That list is a powerhouse.  Fatestitcher is insane, and I can't see how to get more of him in there.  3x sounds like it would be so much better.  I'd be looking at the 4th Thug, but the deck is so tight it's hard to say.

@ GI

My SB was literally random.  I had like half my Legacy SB with like 6x Artifact destruction spells.  It was a total disaster, and I didn't take the time to fix it before the event started.  That said, I'm not on board with Master of Etherium.  He plays a similar role to Goyf in GAT's SB.  I never liked that plan, and I've always regretted playing it.

This decks is very resilient, and I plan to make changes to make it a little more explosive.  As far as the Black/Red mana issue, I generally focus more on one that the other depending on the deck.  I'm much more concerned with Black early, as it allows for Duress and Tutors.  Red is more for answers, and you really need to have a question before you start answering anyways.
