Conflux has more Vintage potential than any other set in recent memory.
Sure, well all know that Path to Exile is the most broken Rampant Growth variant ever printed (Instant speed? Really?),
but what about the potential Vintage
combos?
Here are my Top 5:
#5) Progenitus + Show and Tell
When he was first spoiled, there was a lot of clamor to put Progenitus in Oath.
However, as many have pointed out, Empyrial Archangel is much better,
since it has Shroud, stops Oath from losing to Aggro (a matchup which needed improving),
and presents a four turn clock to the opponent.
Show and Tell, however, has been overlooked,
and this combo seems downright scary with Personal Tutor unrestricted to assemble the combo.
How is the opponent going to deal with a second, or God forbid, first turn Progenitus?
The answer: They won't. He has protection from EVERYTHING. GG, indeed.
#4) Magister Sphinx + Hidetsugo's Second Rite + Oath
This is the Oath kill that's been overlooked.
It cuts down the Oath clock to a
single turn and it's Tinker-able. Wow.
However, except for the combo's synergy with Tinker, it pales in comparison to...
#3) Charnelhoard Wurm + Time Walk + Oath
That's right. It's cheaper than the Magister Sphinx combo AND it can assemble itself if you don't have Time Walk in hand.
So, worst case, it's a two turn clock. God
Daaamn!
However, these Oath cards don't stand much chance of success,
mainly due to an even bigger combo that's sure to shake the very foundations of the Vintage metagame:
#2) Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker + Mana Drain
That's right. Everyone knows that Nicol Bolas is the biggest card to hit Vintage since his Planeswalking buddy Tezzeret,
but the question has been how to break him. Sure you can hard cast him, but that's
almost fair.
However, once you add Mana Drain to the mix, it becomes obvious that he'll be the biggest dog on the Vintage block, by far.
In addition to all of this, he's particularly effective against Oath, since he's able to steal creatures!
So, how can Mana Drain and Nicol Bolas be number two? Well, take a look at number one.
#1) Nyxathid + Dark Ritual
That's right. You thought Negator was scary?
Well, this is going to put Suicide Black back on the map as the deck to beat.
Turn one, Dark Ritual, Nyxathid. You can guess who's going to lose that game.
Well, those are my picks, but I'm sure that there's plenty of territory left unexplored!
Let me know what your top combos are in the forums!
