Fastest deck in vintage? I believe that both Belcher and Ad nauseam are atleast equally fast, but that aside, your report was good, although you did poorly.

Our version of long has 3 night's whispers...they rarely help achieve a turn1 kill, but the amount of turn 2 kills they achieve are amazing.

But to be honest, i think all of my playtest partners and myself prefer ad nauseam atm.

Here's our test version anyways: (SB excluded)
Mana: (29)
4 Polluted delta
1 Flooded strand
1 Bloodstained mire
2 Underground sea
1 Badlands
1 Swamp
1 Tolarian academy
7 Solomoxen
1 Mana vault
1 Mana crypt
1 Lotus petal
1 LED
4 Dark ritual
3 Cabal ritual

Protection: (6)
4 Duress
1 Chain of vapour
1 Hurkyl's recall

Draw/Search: (8)
1 Mystical tutor
1 Vampiric tutor
1 Imperial seal
1 Ponder
1 Brainstorm
3 Night's whisper

Bombs: (14)
3 Grim tutor
1 Demonic tutor
1 Yawgmoth's will
1 Wheel of fortune
1 Timetwister
1 Memory jar
1 Necropotence
1 Yawgmoth's bargain
1 Ancestral recall
1 Tinker
1 Mind's desire
1 Time walk

Win: (2)
1 Tendrils
1 DSC (Probably should be inkwell)

And 1 mystery card i'm not quite sure what is....Probably and island i think.

zeus, can you post your ad nauseam list and why you prefer it over long?  Ive been playing with both and I think long is a little better.  Ad nauseam only really plays 5-6 bombs and a bunch of support cards.  4 ad nauseam and timetwister or necropotence.  It cant afford any more expensive spells.  I played ad nauseam recently and it seems to lose every time if the first ad nauseam is countered.

Id, love to hear your opponion on why its better than long.

It's pretty simple actually, i just find that ad nauseam is a little faster, and has enough disruption to push the vital cards through....Also with:
1 Mystical
1 Vampiric
1 Demonic
1 Consultation
Can't remember if we've got imperial seal in it aswell...but we probably do...
Aswell as 4 ad nauseams, 1 necro and a twister there's always access to a bomb quickly....

Another important thing is that the bombs in ad nauseam are almost always game over, where long's bombs can be a little swingy, like wheel and jar. When i cast my bomb i really want to win on the spot, and i just feel that ad nauseam's bombs are more game-ending and powerfull (in relation to the deck, longs cards are stronger in the abstract, but that really does not matter much).

I am not too fond of tournament reports in general, especially with an old an rusty deck. Also you performed kind of poorly, so I did not enjoy this article nearly as much as I usually like your articles. Still it wasnt terrible by any means but I usually enjoy your articles very much so the bar is quite high. I likeit more when you do deck analysis which I usually gind outstanding. Anyway thats just my personal view.

Seems like the discussion about this deck has died down...

@ Steve:
Although it's been a few weeks since I read your article (which I really enjoyed btw), I only recently have sleeved up Grim Long once again and am hoping to play with it at tournaments in the future. This deck brings back fond memories for me as well: constantly goldfishing in my college dorm room (while procrastinating) and playing it in a few tourneys when back home on break Wink

It seems to me from the tone in your article that you're not really sure how viable the deck would be in current tournament vintage, and perhaps may be more of a relic of the past to sleeve up and play for fun ...? I'd personally like your take on whether or not this is what you've concluded, or if you think there's actually a place for Grim Long in this meta. Also when you wrote your Grim Long article in '08 you did it in more of a primer style with matchup analysis, etc. That would be interesting to read.

I personally love playing Long b/c of the myriad lines of play and intricate decision trees that must be navigated when playing. I continue to be confounded by the complexity of the deck at times Wink I'm not sure though of the advantages of playing this deck as opposed to, say, Ad Nauseam, which seems to have more redundancy in its threats / bombs and is actually a much more consistent deck than people may think.

Sorry if this is a bit of an unfocused post. But would love to here yours (and other peoples') thoughts.

I think you read my feelings pretty well.

Grim Long is a blast to play, and I hope that the article conveys some of that excitement.  However, I definitely felt outmoded in many respects.  I was lucky to be able to race Elves, and felt like I was clawing for dear life to beat Oath.

Notably, I wouldn't have lost the last match in that way had we been playing under M10 rules.  So, there is that...

@ Everyone else: this article is now free.  Enjoy!
