Thank you to everyone who made this event a success. 5 Rounds of swiss left 8 men left fighting for their share of these exciting prizes: I give out a door prize at each of my events to one lucky person who carpooled. Carpooling is what makes the Vintage community growing and sustainable. This is my way of thanking those who keep the community alive and well. Congratulations to Rich Shay, who won a Nicol Bolas Playmat for the Carpool Door Prize: Rich Shay shown with his new Nicol Bolas Playmat - Proof that Shay was visibly more excited about winning a Playmat featuring Tezzeret, than about winning another Mox Sapphire. I also give out a door prize to one lucky person who Pre-Registers. Pre-registering helps me in the task of planning for the event, and setting up the venue. Congratulations to Chris Roberts, who won a Nicol Bolas Playmat for the pre-registration Door Prize: Standings after 5 Rounds of Swiss - 1 Blaine Christiansen 11 UbaStax 2 Oliver Beaumont 11 Tezzeret 3 Rich Shay 11 Tezzeret 4 John Longo 10 Tezzeret 5 Arik Pogrebinsky 10 BUG Fish 6 Craig Dupre 9 Tezzeret 7 Jesse Martin 9 TPS 8 Andy Farias 9 Bomberman 9 Dan Cunningham 9 ANT 10 Brandon Jones 9 Tezzeret 11 Bill Copes 6 Transmuter Stax 12 Demonic Attorney 6 Tezzeret 13 Chris Freitas 6 RG Beats 14 David Charubini 6 Painter 15 Bill Rosa 6 Tezzeret 16 Eli Hamblet 3 Shaymora 17 Chris Roberts 3 TPS 18 Josh Cutler 3 Oath 19 Matt Macauley 0 Shaymora 20 Derrick Correia 0 BGRW Aggro Top 8 -------------------------------- 1 ( 5) Blaine Christiansen 8 ( 11) Andy Farias W -------------------------------- 5 ( 10) Arik Pogrebinsky 4 ( 7) John Longo W -------------------------------- 3 ( 16) Rich Shay W 6 ( 15) Craig Dupre -------------------------------- 7 ( 18) Jesse Martin W 2 ( 14) Oliver Beaumont -------------------------------- Top 4 -------------------------------- 8 ( 11) Andy Farias 4 ( 7) John Longo W -------------------------------- 3 ( 16) Rich Shay W 7 ( 18) Jesse Martin -------------------------------- Finals -------------------------------- 4 ( 7) John Longo 3 ( 16) Rich Shay W -------------------------------- Rich Shay and John Longo (When you're Rich Shay, it's just another day, another Mox, no need to get too worked up ) 1st Rich Shay3 Flooded Strand 2 Polluted Delta 4 Seat of Synod 1 Tolarian Academy 2 Underground Sea 3 Volcanic Island 2 Tezzeret, the Seeker 1 Black Lotus 1 Lotus Petal 1 Mana Crypt 1 Mana Vault 1 Mox Emerald 1 Mox Jet 1 Mox Sapphire 1 Mox Ruby 1 Mox Pearl 2 Sensei's Divining Top 1 Sol Ring 1 Time Vault 2 Voltaic Key 1 Demonic Tutor 4 Thoughtcast 1 Vampiric Tutor 1 Yawgmoth's Will 1 Ancestral Recall 1 Brainstorm 1 Fact or Fiction 4 Force of Will 4 Mana Drain 1 Misdirection 4 Thirst for Knowledge 1 Time Walk 1 Tinker 1 Red Elemental Blast 1 Inkwell Leviathan 1 Hurkyl's Recall 2 Pyroblast 4 Ingot Chewer 2 Yixlid Jailer 2 Pithing Needle 2 Relic of Progenitus 2 Rack and Ruin 1 Tormod's Crypt 2nd John Longo3 Flooded Strand 3 Polluted Delta 3 Underground Sea 3 Island 2 Tropical Island 1 Mox Emerald 1 Mox Jet 1 Mox Sapphire 1 Mox Pearl 1 Mox Ruby 1 Black Lotus 1 Lotus Petal 1 Mana Crypt 1 Sol Ring 1 Tezzeret, the Seeker 1 Tinker 1 Time Vault 1 Voltaic Key 1 Darksteel Colossus 1 Tarmogoyf 2 Street Wraith 1 Engineered Explosives 1 Yawgmoth's Will 1 Time Walk 1 Regrowth 1 Gifts Ungiven 4 Thirst for Knowledge 1 Ancestral Recall 1 Brainstorm 1 Ponder 1 Night's Whisper 1 Impulse 4 Force of Will 4 Mana Drain 1 Misdirection 2 Negate 1 Demonic Tutor 1 Vampiric Tutor 1 Mystical Tutor 1 Merchant Scroll 3 Yixlid Jailer 2 Pithing Needle 1 Tormod's Crypt 2 Tarmogoyf 2 Thoughtseize 1 Snuff Out 3 Energy Flux 1 Hurkyl's Recall Andy Farias and Jesse Martin - a lot of blue card advantage + 2 card instant win combo = hard deck to lose with...
Tezz is quickly becoming the new gifts.
I dont see a single deck in that list of 20 that would be running null rod, did you get some lucky pairings or what?

Arik (BUG Fish) was NOT running Null Rod for some reason. I had 4 Rods (UbaStax) and RG Beats had Rods, but that might have been it.

The RG beats list was more Sligh than RG beats, and was running Null Rod (and was almost mono-red).
Thanks for another good event ELD.

Null Rod and Workshop are banned in New England, aren't they?
Yes. They have been for a few years. Workshop was banned in 2005 when Travis LaPlante won a TMD Open with March of the Machines. The banning was handed down to prevent Travis LaPlante from ever winning another New England tournament with March of the Machines. March of the Machines wasn't banned because it was the engine, Workshop, that was the problem. If Travis LaPlante somehow wins another TMD Open, War Mammoth will probably be banned, too. Null Rod was banned in 2006 when Rich Meyst won a TMD Open with Worse than Grow. Given, the Null Rods were only in Rich Meyst's sideboard, but it was decided that erring on the side of caution would be best in the off chance that the metagame became dominated by Null Rod until the next B/R announcement, which we all know would have destroyed the very essence of the New England Vintage player base.

seems like a good time to start playing null rod.dec + 56 other cards. At least uba can still party like a rock star, so thats promising news.

It splashed green solely for Tarmogoyf. Other than that, yeah, it was mostly Sligh. Top 8 broken down like this: Andy (Bomberman) over Blaine (Uba) John (Tez) over Arik (BUG) Rich (Tez) over Craig (Tez) Jesse (TPS) over Oliver (Tez) John over Andy Rich over Jesse Rich and John did some sort of complicated split which involved playing it out, and Rich won.

I'm running a bit late at the moment and don't have time to post my list, but if Eric doesn't beat me to it I'll edit this post hopefully sometime later tonight and include it. For reference, it's only a few cards off what I top 16'ed with at the TMD Open. EDIT: From memory: 2 Flooded Strand 3 Polluted Delta 2 Island 3 Underground Sea 2 Tundra 1 Library of Alexandria 1 Strip Mine 1 Snow-Covered Island 1 Tolarian Academy 5 Moxen 1 Black Lotus 1 Mana Crypt 1 Sol Ring 4 Force of Will 3 Mana Drain 3 Trinket Mage 2 Auriok Salvagers 2 Thoughtsieze 1 Duress 1 Tezzeret the Seeker 1 Inkwell Leviathan 1 Time Vault 1 Voltaic Key 2 Thirst for Knowledge 1 Echoing Truth 1 Aether Spellbomb 1 Tormod’s Crypt 1 Vampiric Tutor 1 Tinker 1 Brainstorm 1 Argivian Find 1 Pithing Needle 1 Gifts Ungiven 1 Ancestral Recall 1 Engineered Explosives 1 Yawgmoth’s Will 1 Ponder 1 Time Walk 1 Demonic Tutor Sideboard: 1 Leyline of the Void 3 Ethersworn Canonist 2 Yixlid Jailer 1 Relic of Progenitus 1 Tormod’s Crypt 3 Seal of Cleansing 1 Duress 1 Glen-Elendra Archmage 2 Sower of Temptation I encountered a lot of problems with it this time out, particularly with control mirrors. Subsequent changes would primarily address that issue.

Separate your draw spells/game winners, and you counters. 3. Use your draw spells to get more counters, more draw spells, more mana, and game winners. 4. Use your counters to stop: Opponents game winners, Ancestral Recall, and opponents counterspells targetting your spells. 5. Play Yawgmoth's Will, Tinker, or assemble Time Vault and Tezzeret/Voltaic Key.

In fact, I'm sure that extensive articles could be written on the various stages of the modern Vintage control mirror: Stage 1: Ancestral Recall Here players will play mana to cast, search for, and fight over the resolution of Ancestral Recall Stage 2: Thirst Leveraging Here players will play mana to cast, search for, and fight over draw spells that aren't as good as Ancestral Recall Stage 3: Time Vault Here players will play mana to cast, search for, and fight over the exact same win condition, which both decks use in spite of ostensibly being 'different archetypes'.

EDIT: From memory: 2 Flooded Strand 3 Polluted Delta 2 Island 3 Underground Sea 2 Tundra 1 Library of Alexandria 1 Strip Mine 1 Snow-Covered Island 1 Tolarian Academy 5 Moxen 1 Black Lotus 1 Mana Crypt 1 Sol Ring 4 Force of Will 3 Mana Drain 3 Trinket Mage 2 Auriok Salvagers 2 Thoughtsieze 1 Duress 1 Tezzeret the Seeker 1 Inkwell Leviathan 1 Time Vault 1 Voltaic Key 2 Thirst for Knowledge 1 Echoing Truth 1 Aether Spellbomb 1 Tormods Crypt 1 Vampiric Tutor 1 Tinker 1 Brainstorm 1 Argivian Find 1 Pithing Needle 1 Gifts Ungiven 1 Ancestral Recall 1 Engineered Explosives 1 Yawgmoths Will 1 Ponder 1 Time Walk 1 Demonic Tutor Sideboard: 1 Leyline of the Void 3 Ethersworn Canonist 2 Yixlid Jailer 1 Relic of Progenitus 1 Tormods Crypt 3 Seal of Cleansing 1 Duress 1 Glen-Elendra Archmage 2 Sower of Temptation I encountered a lot of problems with it this time out, particularly with control mirrors. Subsequent changes would primarily address that issue. How did you play it? I assume you just grabbed one piece of a win condition opening hand and then tutored/Tezzeret for the other? Or was there a specific game plan? This is how 99% of Vintage blue players play: 1. look at your hand and decide if it has enough mana to feul the spells. 2. That's what I figured, but I am working on a bomberman deck myself, and am trying to figure out how to play it effeciantly

Pics added of Top 8, and below, of the field: John Longo vs Blaine Christiansen Andy Farias vs Brandon Jones Oliver Beaumont vs Eli Hamblet Not a bad mull to 4. Black Lotus, Meditate, on your turn. Your opponent runs out a first turn Tezzeret, and you Commandeer it! Arik Pogrebinsky vs Dr. Zygon Bill Copes vs Craig Dupre Jesse Martin vs Chris Roberts Bill Rosa vs Dan Cunningham (Matt Macauley and Chris Freitasat the next table) Chris Freitas with RG Beats - only one game away from the Top 8! TAL vs DA - the battle of the Time Vaults Freitas' team making the Red Zone even redder! Good start for Shops, better start for Bomberman. Now you're playing with Power!

Adding the pictures you took at this event certainly adds a nice touch to the report, though I may just be biased since I am in three of them. I am hoping that I will actually be playing in your next mox event coming up, but it will depend heavily on how I play next monday night. If I do participate, I absolutely would love for you to continue taking/posting pictures. Having visuals is always a plus.

I definitely plan to take pictures at ELD's Mox 23, which is coming up fast. Everyone have fun at the pre-releases, and Friday Release events, but on Saturday May 2nd, it's time to see if Alara Reborn can win someone a Mox.
