As many of you may already know, a prominent member of the Philadelphia area Vintage community Dan Herd, has recently passed away.  I feel lucky to be given the opportunity to help celebrate his memory by running a memorial tournament to raise money for his wife Courtney, and the Daniel Herd Memorial Fund.  Dan's team has donated copies of what P9 Dan owned (his wishes were that it remained within the team), so even if you didn't know Dan personally, you'll make the trip to participate in what will surely be a great vintage event.

ALL proceeds from the main event, all side events, and any donations accepted will be donated to Dan's Memorial Fund or his widow Courtney, so PLEASE make it your mission to attend to support Dan's family, and to celebrate his memory!

The Daniel Eugene Herd Memorial Vintage Tournament

Date: Saturday June 6th, 2009
Start Time: 11:30 AM (doors open at 10 AM)
Entry Fee: $35
Location: Pennsylvania Convention Center, at 12th and Arch St. Philadelphia
K-Value: This will be an unsanctioned event.
Proxification: Regardless of my personal stance on proxies, this tournament will allow 20 proxies with the opportunity to purchase as many as you need for $1 more each.  The reason for this is I would like to see as many people as possible come play in this event.  If you have friends who don't normally play vintage, proxy up a deck for them and bring them along for the ride!

1st Place: UL Black Lotus
2nd Place: UL Ancestral Recall
3rd Place: UL Mox Sapphire
4th Place: UL Mox Jet
5th-8th Place: Mana Drain
9th-32nd Place: TBA as we receive donations/figure out more details.

In lieu of a budget prize at a tournament with this many proxies, I will be holding this ridiculous 8-player side event a Mox Pearl.
Rotisserie Draft Collector's Edition
Start time: Whenever we get eight players, it happens!
Entry Fee: $30
Here's how it works: I will lay out the entire Collector's Edition Set (Beta) on a table (excluding basic lands).  Eight players will draft their decks from the set, then continue to play a three round swiss tournament.  Swiss standings determine the winner, who will win that Mox Pearl!  What's the best first pick? What are the right colors to draft? All cards will be allowed, with ante cards errated to RFGing the top card of your library in lieu of ante.  Sign-ups will start after Round 2.  I think the best first pick is Contract from Below, but that's just me.

There will be a $10 single-elimination side event (capped at 32) for a Mox Emerald!

We will be running all sorts of side events throughout the day, from vintage 8-mans to booster drafts, to EDH, to whatever we can get sign ups for!

DONATIONS
If you would like to donate cards, please give them to me in person or mail them to the following address:

Nick Coss
24 Prospect Ave.
Voorhees, NJ 08043

If you would like to volunteer at this event please PM me or email me at NickCoss@yahoo.com

Hotel information will be posted in the near future, there are hundreds of hotels within 10-15 minutes of the venue, I will most likely arrange for a group rate to go along with the event.

Let's make this an event to remember, I'd like to see the American vintage community out in force at this event!

Nick: Count me in!! -- You have my full support on this.
Also, if you'd like me to bring the Dan Herd Team Memorial plaque <see the Aug 1st event for details> I will... just PM me..

edit: After a chat with Nick, the Dan Herd Memorial plaque will be etched first at this event... which is only fitting.

This sounds pretty awesome.  What a nice thing to do for Dan and his family.  I'll be there - so please start the tournament at at a reasonable time for travelers!  10 AM is really early when it takes 5.5 hours to get there, and I'm sure a lot of people from a little further away would like to show their support for Dan and his family!

This is just a suggestion, but I feel like the Mox Emerald side event should probably have a higher entry fee (maybe $15 or $20), because if you can't get 30 players or so for the side event, you'll lose a decent sum on the Emerald. I know that it was donated, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to get a slightly higher amount out of it so you can provide more money for the fund. I would say $15 instead of $10.

On the other hand, if you get a ton of people for the main event (and, hence, the side event), $10 is fine.

Good luck with this event. I hope it goes well.

Sadly, I won't be able to attend this one due to other plans that particular weekend, but I would if I could.  I'll be sure to at least encourage some people from Team Balitmore to go.

The highest placing player playing a "budget" deck will receive an UL Mox Pearl!!!  A budget deck is defines as one that has no P9, mana drains, grim tutors, imperial seal, library of alexandria, bazaar of baghdad, mishra's workshop, and any other card worth more then $100.

Neat. Time for Goblins to snatch up a Black Lotus and a Mox Pearl simultaneously!

This entire event is a great gesture and yet another example of how fantastic the eternal community is. We may play with decks that are worth more than our car in some cases, but I'm just privileged to be a part of our player base.

Bump,

A few local vintage players were talking about the Mox Pearl that I was planning on giving away for the highest placing budget deck, because it doesn't really make sense considering the high number of proxies, not many people will choose to play a deck without some of the high power level cards vintage is built on.

If I could get some feedback regarding this, that would be great.  (Also input regarding what else to do with the Mox Pearl would be great)

Thanks,

-Nick

I can't attend (though I wish I could), so take my opinion as you will, but I raised an eyebrow when I saw that too. I don't think it really makes sense to give out prizes for that at proxy events. Even "budget" decks like Goblins or Elves! would be made better by adding a Black Lotus and the appropriate Moxen. Asking people to play suboptimal decks (not saying those decks are suboptimal, but those decks without Lotus/Mox are) for an additional prize is an all-around bad idea. It makes those players have less fun (under the assumption that broken-ness = fun) and distorts the metagame.

That said, I don't know have any suggestions for what you could do with the Pearl instead.

Nick,
I would suggest a silent auction. Start it on a certain date and end it the day of the event... Create an email account and have people put in bids. Highest bidder takes it.
Honestly, if I were to win a piece of Dan's power, it would be an honor and something I would not want to part with.

I just have to say that I'm super-psyched about this event.  That prize support is out-of-control insane, especially for a tournament that we would all have probably come to anyways just to support Dan.  And it doesn't start at 10AM, so I can come!  I will be bringing people!

I think we're due for a banned/restricted update right before this event, so if anything changes this may be the last big tournament using the current list.

Hey guys,

I just wanted to let you all know that I'm still looking for donations of time and of prize support.  In fact, other then the initial donations by Team Rebel Alliance and myself, there haven't been any other donations made.  I'm looking for any cool vintage cards that would be appropriate for 9th-32nd place.  It doesn't have to be anything expensive, it just has to be anything that you'd be happy to receive as a prize (no basic land from 8th edition please).  Also, I am looking for people that would like to volunteer as judges/scorekeepers/TOs.  If anyone would like to donate anything, please PM, IM, or email me.

Thank you all in advance,

-Nick
