When the powers that be (Tobi and such) verify I typed them lists up good, I'll delete the list pics and just leave lists.  Most list pics have proxies noted, but some don't (like Dream Halls), but did in fact use 10 proxies. Hence the 1 Mana Drain in the list.  But some people were curious what the proxy use is in certain metas.

PICS!

Brian gets his Dream Halls in play during first and second game of our match.  He discards Inkwell Leviathon to cast Cruel Ultimatum, which casues me to lose a trinket Mage, lose 5 life and discard 3 cards, then he gets Inkwell Leviathon back from graveyard (it's still called that, right?), draws 3 cards and gains 5 life.  In the three cards he draws, Conflux or Cruel Ultimatum might be one of them, then repeats (I lose another dude, 5 life and 3 cards, he gets 3 cards, inkwell back and 5 life). He did this to me BOTH games (although game 1, I had no idea what he was playing, but countered Remora twice early on...). Maybe Bryan will chime in as he's now aware that I put pics etc on TMD.

Same thing...just closer.  This might be game 2.

I couldn't have for the life of me figured out what was going on.  It turns out left player has 3 cards in hand, 2 of whice had been revealed by an earlier Duress.

Christiaan getting his Tinker On vs, TomJoad? someone.

Team Vacaville's Alex gets a perfictly sculpted Stax hand vs Ichorid. That is, game 2 and three. Alex lost hella bad game 1.

JeffTheFob Tez list vs UGB hatefish

Off the the 0-2 Cube-Building table.

The bitch on the left is a different big ass dog than the one Dylan brought here last time.

Dream Halls rears it's ugly head vs UG fish round 2.  Does Stifle deal with Dream Halls? A quick cellphone call to Lvl 1 Judge LSV says it doesn't!

Who's the beatdown?
This was the nutty game 1 I had against ?Richard?.  Game two he wasted my Tundra and Ancient Tomb and dazed my Trinket Mage, etc.
Game 3 he had no Idea what this deck is (He's newish to Vintage I guess) and had sided out his Null Rods. Smile The people playing near me knew (either cuz they saw my hand or know my deck history like JeffTheFob) and just couldn't comment on anything. Fun games!

Stax vs 4c Tez. I think Tez won, in the end, but I'm not sure.

BobTezmora vs another Generic Bomberman, that seemed almost identical to mine.

Do you guys ever get tired of seeing first turn Duress pics? Cuz I don't.

Christiaan slow-rolling the Remora Top combo enough to get that damned Pithing Needle of the table eventually.
When asked what Jixid Jailor was in for vs Bomberman, Christiaan said "To get into the red zone?". Doh!

This is what happens when you Tinker for one of the top 4 cards of your library (forgetting that you had that limit! We had to back this one up).
Mindsensor got there, even after Tendrils for 8 (well, 6 since I Forced a copy). Merchant Scroll of one the top 4 blue instants. Not an awesome play either.

Alex basking in his total Stax Lockdown Domination of this game.

Knadler Knoathing.

I actually didn't know what Ochoa was playing until round 5.  It looked like he was DreamCrushing Morgan, but apparently they played for fun. The top 6 of the top 8 drew in.

The o-2 Cube bracket

Bryan Commandeered a Black Lotus for the win! Now he has 2 in play! Doh!

I didn't get pics of top 8 cuz I was in it.  My mini report tomorrow.

I too knew the concern of Father's day (My dad live's in Utah! He gets a phone call Smile. Alex's dad may or may not pay child support!  Lucky Team Vacaville.

But I also recall Eudemoni simply assigning every 3rd week (or 4th week) as Tourney Day, hollidays be damned!

Don't feel bad for missing out.

I was just happy we got 20 and got to play (this is my third time touching Vintage cards this year...)

Nice pictures and great lists and ideas. I especially love this situation, where one player is controling two Black Lotus.

Father's Day screwed this up for me, scheduling tourneys on holidays are just above psting them 3 days before they happen. :/

Mine got a phonecall before top 8.

It was a fun day. THe only slop was that 125 credit --> 60 cash conversion, which was a bit harsh considering they had exactly zero older cards in their case. Can't hold that against them though, they have to do the best to serve the larger portion of their market. They did however have all the foils I asked for in the back, and all the staple dredge stuff that my teammate Pat needed. So it worked out well in the end.

For reference, Andrew Beldin = HuntedWumpus, so Jeff was playing against UG fish in the pics. Matt Nass played BUG fish.

As always, thanks to Lotushead for pics and report.

There are usually older cards in the cases, but they were moved temporarily for the 5k standard tournament.

It was good to see some old faces at the tournament.

I crushed the swiss, losing the only game 1 where I was on the play. Then promptly lose in top 8 when I mull to five on the draw game 3 against Ichorid on seven cards with Bazaar, Unmask, Chalice, Gemstone Mine, Emerald Charm. Thanx for playing.

That's dem beatz.

Despite my awful weekend, it is good to finally see us dueling some type 1 after release of Alara Reborn.

On my way to become Wall of Woods I played Ichorid when I decide to cut my Ichorid hate because I only confirmed only 1 player was playing it.  Turns out Dylan, who played Stax for the last half an year decide to tap some Bazaars.  I almost had him game 1, but he was able to double Bazaar me out.  Game 2 I had turn 1 Bob, but my top 11 cards didn't help.

Round 2 can be described as "wish I was dead" and "dead."  Duress Andrew on the play seeing Null Rod, FoW, Cursecatcher, Voidmage Prodigy, a blue, and 2 lands I think.  I took Null Rod and played Ruby + Voltaic Key.  He went turn 1 Cursecatcher.  While I missed the next land drop I tried a Repeal on the Cursecatcher to try to clear up the Merchant Scroll I drew.  He then went, Disrupt.  And I was thinking, "WISH I WAS DEAD."  I then tried to FoW his Kai, and he FoW back.  Promptly dropped a Null Rod on me and.... that was.

Game 2 was pretty decent opener: Jet, Smother, Time Vault, and 4 lands.  Exactly the type of hand you want against Fish with Stifles and Wastelands.  Well, the problem was my next 6 draws are all lands.  At this moment, I was "DEAD."

Round 3 was TPS, since playing Remora I have not yet lost to TPS ^_^ My opener had Thoughtseize and Ancestral.  Went for the turn 1 Thoughtseize and he FoW pitching FoW.  Ah, fuck.  Then he went Ritual, Necro.  Draw 8.  I tried for desperate Ancestral, and ....... Misdirection...... that was.

Game 2 was the only game I won.

Game 3 was honestly the game in the weekend that I could had played differently and outcome may bit bit different.  But he turn 3 stormed for 7 and got all spells except 1, including Yawg. Will + Ancestral Recall + Necro.

Went Wall of Wood after going 0-2 previous day's PTQ.  Didn't really win a match.  The best part of my weekend was crushing in cube drafts.

that being said, there is only 1 thing that bothered me throughout the whole tourney; it wasn't well ran.

I understand Mashi is overworked and tired while Eric wasn't here.  But the tourney wasn't smoothly ran, there were numerous times where time was called and the match called on time is still derfing around.  Each round just went way longer than expected.  There were also some miscommunication between the time tourney started and its actual start time.  When the quarterfinal is done, it was well past 8.  Tourney "started" at 1 and should had started at noon..... I know it is typical that tourney will start late, but there was actually a miscommunication.  On top of that with the delay, it made losing early sucks even more.

Thats what I figured, but I was also told a lot of it was liquidated. With being able to add the credit to your account and then use it online it works out fairly well anyway.

I can write up a quick mini-report on my matches if there is interest, I spent most of the day today on I-5 so I haven't had a chance. My day was kind of odd anyway, lost round 1, won 2, won 3, lost 4, BYE 5 into 8th place, Won first round of T8, then we spit.

Allright. My report:

I finally have a Sunday off from work, and can actually plan to attend the event.

I haven't touched my bag of Vintage Goodies since 2 months previous, so I still had my Gilded Claw and Jr's uh, RemoraTog deck built.

Then M10 rules changes were announced.  Then the B/R changes.

I decided that I wanted to give Thirst For Knowledge one last go, and teammate Alex wanted to play 5c Stax (actually a list about 4 cards off Ochoa's list).

I settle on Bomberman. I whip up a UWr build because I quite liked the Empty The Warrens option plus SB REB and Mox Monkies.

That was at say, 3am prior to the tourney.

Alex and I show up about 20 minutes before the tourney is supposed to start, but the doors are still locked etc.  All is well within 10 minutes, and I unexpectedly have an extra hour and a half to tweak the deck.  I decided to go Generic UW Salvagers with 4 Salvagers maindeck.

Round 1: Brian Hoyt.  He's played UGB Fishies last time I was here, and that's all I know about him.  He says he built this deck because no one else (locally) had built it and wanted to try it out.

Game 1: I keep a mediocre hand with FOW and Blue card.  He leads with Remora. Sigh.  I decided to Force it because I have played so little real Vintage that I forget he can't keep it up forever and should probably just let it sit.  He later plays another one. I drain it. Then I force something else and again something else. (I had plenty of protection in my top 12 cards!).  Then he plays and resolves DREAM HALLS?!?!?!?!?!!? He discards Inwell Leviathon to play Cruel Ultimatum, draws cards, gets back Inkwell, discards it to play Cruel Ultimatum, draws cards, gets back inwell, discards it to play Cruel Ultimatum. I was at 15 and die to Dream Halls.

Game 2: I get a coupla of Trinket Mages out to set a clock, and when he was at 11 or so, he EOT Meditates.  I thought for sure that I would rape him, but as it turns out, I just get my free turn (knocking him to 7, dropping one more dude), and he resolves DREAM HALLS and Dreamcrushes me.

Well played Sir and good luck!  I probably should have sided in Ethersworn Cannonists, but I thought "I just sack it to his stupid Ultimatums... Sad "
I should have thought harder and said "I would have to sac a Trinket Mage FIRST, then get my turn with Ethersworn in play". 0-1 start.

Round 2: I forget.
Game 1: I get Land Mox Mox Trinket Mage (resolves) Mox Top start.
He plays Volcanic Island, Mana Vault, pass. Hmmm.
turn 2 I resolve another Trinket Mage (interesting), top and find a Salvager, activate top and Play Salvager. Nice, pass. Opponent maybe plays a mox and passes.
Turn 3 I cast Thirst for Knowledge and he REB's it. (oh!). So I cast another Trinket Mage (or bounced one of my earlier ones with Echoing Truth or something), get combo peices and go off.
Whoot!

Game 2: He has turn 0 Leyline.  I try to play turn 1 Top and Chalice for 1 off land and two moxes.  He MOGG SALVAGES my Chalice right away.  Later, he taps out to play Painter and Grindstone, but can't activate it YET.  Like a champ, I rip Engineered Explosives off the top of my deck and asplode his painter.  Tinker magically appears soon after and a few swings with an 11/11 seal the deal.  1-1

Round 3 I get paired down against a guy  who admits "he first set out to win a match at this tourney, now he's just out to have a game".
Game 1: I leads with Sage of Epytr  (the look at top 4 cards eurotech guy).  I lead with Library at Alexandria, and slowly draw cards while getting beat down.  When opponent finally wastes it, I start playing Trinket Mage after Trinket Mage after Trinket Mage after Trinket Mage and just swing and swing with Islands and fetchlands as my mana base (maybe a mox or two).  My fishies are bigger than his.
Game 2: I keep Tundra Mox Emerald hand of 6, and it gets wasted and crushed and I get Ninja's and Meddling Maged etc.  He kills me before I have any sort of usable mana base and I die.
Game 3: He reveals he had no idea what I was playing except some random Trinket Mage conction.  I play around Daze and resolve stuff, bounce Meddling Mages, and top away until I get Auriok Salvager into my hand with SB Ethersworn Cannonists.  I play the Cannonist, then the Salvager (Doh!), then recure Black Lotus, then bounce all his stuff with Spellbomb, then draw lots, then put 10 creatures into play, then keep 7 blue spells in hand.  It turns out he sided out his Null Rods.  Lucky me.  I had actually sided in 9 Creatures to deal with his fishies since I would probably have bigger and more creatures than him.. I didn't expect to combo out, but just out aggro him.  Does that sound like a good plan? Me with 18 dudes to his dudes?

Round 4: Charles (apparently LiberBias in the forums sometimes).
Game 1: I keep double Salvager Double Thirst, Land Mox Mox kind of hand. He thoughseizes me and takes a thirst.
I draw a thirst (or a sexy sol ring or something), and just start to play and resolve stuff.  I figure he MIGHT not play Force of Will at ALL I through a Salvager out there, and it sticks. I might has slipped in a Time Walk (I don't remember. There was some fun dance music playing across the street and I likst to move it move it).  Point being, I have a Salvager on the field, and I play Tinker, I select my card and say "Any guesses?" He says Inkwell Leviathon" I slap my Black Lotus on the Board, get infy mana, play my thrirsts, top, fetch top trinket Aether draw cards and put stuff on the field.  He had cast Imperial Seal the turn before, and asked me if I can actually kill him this turn.  I said Well, no, my Time Walk is already in the graveyard, but After I put all my stuff into play, and cast TimeTwister, I can get to my time walk and kill you next turn. Smile
Love that card.
Game 2: I keep a hand of Force, Hurkyls, Mindsencor, Sol Ring, Land, Land, Land.
He turn 1 duresses me and I Force it! He MIGHT take my Sol Ring, which I would hate, but would obviously take the Force.  So I pitch Hurkyls to Force, and let him sweat it out.
My turn is Tundra Sol Ring go.
His turn (I THINK) is Dark Ritual, Necropotence (refill hand) go.
I through Aven Mindcensor out there, and maybe drew Sensei's Diving Top (MVP of the day I think), and Charles spends the next few turns taking 2 damage per turn while Mystical Tutoring for an instant or sorcery in his top 4 cards, Merchant Scrolling for a blue instant in his top 4 cards, fetching for a land in his top for cards etc.
He gets down to 3 life when he lauches Tendrils for 4 storm (8 damage). I Force a copy just to deny him life.
At some point, I have Ancestral Recal on top of deck and when he goes for the Yawgwill Play, I Ancestral Thirst Top and Thirst my way into a Force. Whoot!
3-1

Round 5: ID with Dylan.  I said "Play for fun?" He said "I'm playing Ichorid", I said "I'm don't complain about playing against any kind of deck, even Ichorid". He said "I don't want to pilot Ichorid! cuz it's Ichorid." We played some Bomberman on Stacks no SB action and he got me 2/3.

Top 8 vs Brian Morgan.
I'm just guessing he's playing a bunch of blue and black busted cards.
Game 1:  He ancestrals, I misdirect, he forces and draws three cards.  I decide to just through stuff out there. 2 Trinket Mages later and a few unlucky rolls with the Mana Crypt seal the deal before he can get anything good.
Game 2:  He takes his time sideboarding against me, and apparently hasn't played Magic lately any more than I have. (All if my sideboarding was kinda random).  I bait some stuff, he drains some stuff, I bait more (after he takes burn for the 2nd time in a row, I decide to just throw out Tinker and see what happens). What happens is he dies next turn. Smile

So I make top 4 and the others decide to split for 125 store credit each, and by this time FOB Web and company are allready gone, and I find out the cash option is but 60 each (ouch) and I sorta recall Alex winning 25 cash for top 8 last time (with 17 turnout).  Web and FOB know the owners TO's more than I do but I have no one to get information from like "Wasn't this billed as a cash tourney?"

Well, I am happy that SuperStars is having a regular thing, and 125 store credit (that I can shop at leisure at www.channelfireball.com, is kind of a fun perk.  Maybe I can finally buy all those stupid cards that go into an Ichorid Deck, then I'd have one.  Or get Force of Will #4, or God forbid, a Standard Mana Base, or Tez or Empyrical Angels or Delta #4 or...

All in all I was happy, but I would have loved $125 put in my pocket instead.
If it wasn't 8:30 by this point I might have insisted on playing it out as my deck has been performing and I had a new plan versus 2 of the decks in top 4, but gads it was late and it's 90minutes from home.

Truth Be Told: My opponent's (except round 1 Dream Halls) just got really unlucky vs my deck, and my deck faced no hardcore hate. (I saw two leylines I think, but nothing like Chalice or Null Rod or Sphere of Resistance, Ichorid or other dedicated anti-combo cards.). I was fortunate.

Thirst: It was nice knowing ye.

I piloted ichorid to top 4, or more likely it piloted me. It was my first time playing it other than a few non-sb games against Eric. Try as I could to miss triggers and even my draw step in the top 8, sorry for the sloppy play Webster, the deck is so powerful and consistent that I still went 9-3 in games on the day. I found that people were trying to mull aggressively into hate and keeping shaky hands because it would have a tormod's crypt or something, But 1 piece of hate usually isn't enough. Maybe I was just lucky with my hands. Also, Fatestitcher is insane.

Is superstars doing OK? I was a little worried when they said they liquidated most of their old cards, the computers in the corner are gone, the timer is gone, etc. I hope they stay in business.

When the powers that be (Tobi and such) verify I typed them lists up good, I'll delete the list pics and just leave lists.

In fact there has been some mistakes in the lists, but I corrected them directly as I typed them into morphling.de, therefore I cannot tell where the mistakes were. Anywhere, the correct lists are up here: http://www.morphling.de/top8decks.php?id=1083

Very nice Dream Halls list. I played a similar list at the last Horden tournament in Darmstadt ( http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=37692.0 ) and it was really good. I think a mostly blue shell with Mystic Remora and Meditate is the right environment for Dream Halls. And Cruel Ultimatum is a blast. Once resolved, it is almost always game winning.
This list is probably better than mine. I also exchanged red with black in my list later on, which is the correct color combination.

Hey man I really like this list because it is very similar to the one I am playing. Couple of comments though. How do you feel about not having Mana Drains instead of 4 Duress? I use 4 Drains and 2 Misdirection because of the synergy with Force and the ability to channel Drain mana on my main phase. Also the problem with Duress is that it is relatively weaker against Fish and Stax while opening you up for a 1st turn Wasteland, which in some cases could be very devastating. How do you like the 5 disruption vs the 4 Drains and 2 MisD? Because with disruption you have no control over the tempo of the match. I mean that you can force them to discard a spell but they can cast another one on their turn. Mana Drain allows you to control both while requiring a 2nd land drop usually.

I'm not trying to be critical just merely asking questions because I'm also trying to develop a deck similar to yours. How does Remora and Tezerett work for you? I personally find Tezzertt to be too heavy and Tezerett is also a dead card early on. Without Mana Drains you seem to have less opportunities to easily sneak a Tezerett in, which means most of the time you would have to hard cast him.
With Mystic Remora, I have a couple of qualms with it. 1. It does not net you immediate card advantage, which in a blue control deck is paramount IMO. 2. Your opponent can play around it by holding back their spells. Or worse if they have creatures like Dark Confidant and Sower of Temptation.
I prefer Night's Whispers because it is very reliable and is always a +1 immediate card advantage.

Another question I would have is that with Confidants, how does 1 Sensei work out for you? I run 2 Sensei because of Confidants and Night's Whispers. Running Inkwell Leviathan along with Confidant and 1 Sensei seems dangerous. I am testing out Platinum Angel as a synergy card to Confidants and a G1 Win vs Ichorid.

DREAM HALLS ..sheeeyit!  A non-Tez Shamora deck is exactly what we needed.

Screw you Wizards, and thanks for nothing.  Brian Hoyt just did more to fix the metagame than restricting TfK ever could!!
