This will be the second Vintage event in NYC at Jim Hanley's Universe near Herald Square.

Here are the details:

With 8-24 people, we will have 4 rounds of swiss and a cut to top 4. However, if we have less than 8 we might need to re-organize the structure a bit so it is important for me to get a head count ASAP in order to determine how best to announce the tourament.

In general (unless this grows out of hand in popularity and numbers) I think I'd like to keep these tournaments under 5 hours so a strict 50 minute rounds rule will be applied.  We are starting an hour earilier to ensure that even if the rounds go to time, we have sufficient time to finish before the store closes

When?

July 5th, 2009
Arrive at 2:30 to register.  The tournament begins at 3:00 sharp  Please, PLEASE be on time or, IF you think you'll be late then call me or cell message me at (917) 561-5224 and let me know.

Where?
Jim Hanley's Universe
4 W33rd st., between 5/6 avenue
New York, NY

(short walk from Penn station and right next to Herald Square, shouldn't be hard to find, but call me if you need directions)

Tournament Format
Unsanctioned Vintage (Type 1) with up to 15 proxies permitted (must be on a card and with Sharpie so it won't run or add thickness. All cards must also be in sleeves. Please try to make/bring your own proxies. If you need proxies, let me know up to 48 hrs in advance and I can provide them
Entry Fee: $15
4 rounds of Swiss/ cut to top 4
Prizes (based entirely on attendance.  $5 is a space fee that goes to the store, the rest goes towards the prize structure)
With 10 people the prize structure would look like this:
1rst - $55
2nd - $25
3rd/4th - $10 each

PM with questions or concerns.  I look forward to seeing you on Sunday.

We will also have an event exactly 2 weeks later:  same place, same time.  I will begin a new thread once this tournament is over so as not to confuse attendance and responses for both events.  Hope to see you there this Sunday.

Good job on the post Jostin and keep me informed on who makes it for this event and how it goes! I'll be back in NYC promptly at the Beginning of August and will be able to help with Organizing Tournaments again at that time. One suggestion I'd have is to ask players if they'd like to contribute Vintage Staples as part of the prize structure and have some of the prize money go to the cards. That way you can actually increase the overall value of the prize structure as people contributing their staples will not be asking for full reimbursement. Just partial. I think this also helps promote Vintage more in that it incentivizes newer players in building a Vintage collection. Once they've acquired a couple duals/fetches and some FoWs then perhaps they'll be more interested in going all the way towards a consistent Vintage playable deck to bring to a tournament.

In any case I'm psyched that you are keeping things rolling and just give me a call or PM if you need any other info/advice!

Good Luck!

The Internet says that the store closes at 9 pm on Sundays. Is this your understanding for when the store closes?

You are correct, but I do think they'd make an exception for this event and keep the store open a bit longer if the tournament exceeded 4 hours.

@Jostin123- Jostin, do you think you could try linking this as an event in the Calender so people can find it more readily?

Thanks,

I did.  The current month on calendar is for June.  If you click the tab for July events, it a there.  Also, I encourage everyone who knows someone who plays Vintage, to let them know we're doing this.  I would like to make this a bi-monthly thing for the summer.

Well, it's scheduled for 6 rounds total which is 5 hours total if it runs optimally. Any chance we could maybe start a little earlier? In the alternative, have we asked the store if we can stay late rather than just assuming this?

I now definitely be there with 1 other person.
If possible I vote on the start earlier solution as we live out on the Island and have work on Monday...but we'll be there regardless.

I had a good time yesterday, many thanks to Jostin for putting this together.  The Staten Island thing bothered me at first, but we got past it and I think everybody had a pretty good time.

It was good to meet Yare, who's a pretty nice guy.  Thoctar beatdown was pretty scary.

I enjoyed all my matches and thanks to all my opponents.  Josh, we had twice the fun over the course of the day.

And I hope to see everybody on the 25th!

I missed the tournament yesterday because I didn't make it home in time, what was the "staten island" thing? Also so it wasn't officially announced I take it the next tournament is going to be held on the 25th?

Yeah, I'd like to know what this "Staten Island Thing" was as well. I hope it didn't cause too much trouble.

Also, I'd like the players to try to help Josh make a good Tournament Report by posting their decklists here or PMing them to him at the very least. I'd really like to know more about this Thoctar list? Woolly Thoctar FTW? What?

-Peace,

Storm

I was the one who ran WoollyThoctar.dec. All you need to know is this:

I mean, how can anybody even hope to contend with that? I splashed black for Smother to sure up the mirror match. It was huge all day.

In all seriousness, I have to admit my expectations were exceeded for this event. The event started on time, rounds ended on time, rounds started on time. The turnout (11) was decent, though I too am wondering just how much the Staten Island thing ultimately impacted attendance. A great event all around.

If I had two gripes, they would be to increase the entry fee by $5-$10 and to start maybe at 1 or 2 pm rather than 3 (perhaps in hopes that future events will require more rounds). Otherwise, I can't really complain.

Also, props to Max for beating me twice with his suicide black deck. I thought it was well constructed and achieved exactly what it aimed for.

That's really great to hear. I'm sorry I got things off on the wrong foot with you with my initial confusing Announcements/ Revisions. Jostin, had my mistakes to improve upon so I'm sure things ran smoothly. Once I'm back in the city at the beginning of August I should easily be able to accommodate the Sunday time with my schedule so that can stick as the time for now.

As for entry fee that's going to be a little tougher to get a consensus on. I've heard some people say that they wanted it lowered (though I think they had in mind that it'd be a weekly event when they said that). I think bi-weekly is probably sufficient, but, if we do that I'd like to go with your suggestion and up the entry fee to like $20. Also, if we can have players contribute Vintage Staples in exchange for some portion of the entry fee + free entry then that might allow for some better prize support as well.

For example we could have someone contribute a Mana Drain for first place and they would get:

free entry and 2 entry fees?

That means they are still getting something from the event (and possibly winning their drain back) but now the prize can be a lot bigger and more exciting overall.

I'm thinking we could easily support with 15 players the following prize structure:

1rst = Mana Drain + 60 dollars
2nd = Underground Sea + 40 dollars
3rd/4th = 2 Fetchlands each +20 dollars

Unfortunately, for this prize structure to work we'd probably have to charge 25 dollars for entry. I think a lot of this depends on how much the owners of these cards would be will to devalue them. If they are more generous with their contributions then we might be able to support this prize structure on 20 dollar entry, but right now here's how the breakdown goes:

Total money = $375
Money for store = $75
Money for prizes = $300
Value of Drain = $60
Value of Sea = $30-40
Value of 2 Fetches = $25-30 (depending on which ones)

We could also just have no cash prize and then the card prize support becomes a lot easier and maybe that's what we'll move towards eventually, but right now that's a bit of how I see it working.

I think that if/when we ever eclipse 25 players then we are moving into mox range for prize support.

Thoughts on cards vs. cash? or a combination of the two?

I would not want the fee to go higher than $20 if it became a weekly event. For biweekly, I would say $25. This is all assuming the store cut would remain at $5 per entry.

Regarding cards for entry, I think I would prefer that that not take place because I think that invites all kinds of problems concerning whether it's fair if so and so gets so many entries for his cards and valuing the cards for prize purposes and stuff like that. If you just do cash, the secondary market (perhaps right after the event) can take care of all the cards for money transactions people might have in mind. That way you just have two people bargaining rather than twenty. Cash is an objective measure for entry to events. Also, yeah, this would be doing cash transactions on store property, but I don't think the store sells singles and this stuff goes on all the time in one form or another anyway, so whatever.

My understanding is that people who arrived fairly early were told that the tournament was at the store's Staten Island location rather than the Manhattan location (which was false). Consequently, a handful of people left the site before the event got started. I don't know anything beyond that, including how many people were involved or if they actually went to Staten Island.

Both Matches against you were great, and it is kind of lame that it came down to a bad beat for you in the last game. The deck is always a work in progress, and I was trying out some new configurations in both the maindeck and sb, cutting a land for imperial seal, I never saw it when it mattered though so it still needs more testing.

Overall the event was alot of fun, and the venue location is convenient.

@max: Did you run Demonic Consultation? I always loved it in Nether Void.dec.

Any chance we could get the next announcement up on a separate thread so people know to look for it? Smile In the alternative, if there are details that still need to be discussed on here, let's talk about those.

A very long time ago the deck included that card, but i find myself tutoring for 1-ofs about 75-80% of the time(usually Lotus, Yawgs Will, Null Rod, Chalice, Pithing Needle, Edict, or strip mine)
