I wonder if we'd see any of our friends from overseas, for a tournament that large...
Damn I missed this post, let me expand on my original post.... @RichardD Heck, I'd even consider flying with you to cheapen it up and do a road trip again.... Damn sure I'd consider coming out to something like this, would be easier if some Philly / NYC dude could put me up instead of staying in a hotel though......

I'll show up with the lord of the Cats, JAco, Brian Fisher, and we'd probably meet up with meandeckers and GWS (AKA twaun) in Ohio.

I had intended to attempt a tournament on this scale at some point, but I really had to crunch some numbers when I first thought about it. I took in to account the fact that in the United States today east of the Mississippi which is your expected distance to travel, there are at a maximum, 200 total competitive vintage players.
Without tapping in to any other market, legacy, standard etc and drawing them in with insane prizes to a format they know nothing about, you are barely breaking even if EVERY SINGLE vintage player in the USA attends.
Even at 40 dollar entry, your pulling in 8 grand, with that entire prize structure, and I'm going by generous prices on the power, it would run around $7600. Of course, if you have a deal on the cards and you just need to move them, that is a completely different situation.
It was always my intention the next time I won 20 grand + that I would run the most ridiculous vintage tournament with the largest prize payout in the history of the world, so here's hoping I get lucky again before you get to steal my thunder Nick :>
But the brutal truth is that this kind of tournament may not be financially viable in the United States due to the fact that there just aren't enough players to make a profit. But, that's where my ideas come in, if it's all won money from a casino, who really gives a shit if I'm taking a loss, it's not that big of a deal, and I would forever be known as the guy that ran the largest vintage tournament in the history of the world.

I'd go, assuming I wasn't booked for something else (something that would have to be relatively important).
Would you consider making it a two-day event? It would give more incentive for people to travel a distance to be there.
Also, it would probably be good to book it far in advance so that people can really prepare for it, like the Bazaar of Moxen or Gen Con.

Not sure of that. Ray always pulled in around 200 when Waterbury was going good, people have got used to 10 proxy vintage as a format, and as long as you run before April, flights from Europe (or at least from the UK) are cheap enough to pick up a few. Besides on a trip from Eurozone, at the current exchange rate, you could make a killing just coming here and buying at dealer prices to offload at home. Pack your luggage with a couple of cases of boosters too. 200 should be easy enough, add in some additional revenue generators like side events, maybe food, and dealer tables and you're set. But I agree with the day 2 voices. That was what really made some of the tournaments I've been to over the years, Cl0wn's Binghamton tournament, Waterbury, all been good fun with a leisurely day 2.

I agree that two days are better than one for getting the big draw, but I'd be there regardless. Kudos for looking into running this event.

I think I played the most ridiculous event, considering prizes. If I recall correctly the first Vintage Championship in Paris in 2005 had a full Beta P9 for the top8 and a full Unl P9 for the top8 unpowered. It also had extra prizes for everybody with less than 2 losses.

Nick, I still think that the way to go is to tie a big event like this into smaller, feeder events by offering a bye or byes along with the prize, similar to what I discussed in an article much earlier this year.
For example, one Blue Bell and one NYSE event before the large US event could offer 2 byes for 1st and 1 bye for second along with whatever prizes they normally give out. It would cost those TOs nothing and help give people incentive to make the trip. Vintage TOs from all over the US (or even worldwide) could be encouraged to participate and submit results.
Just a thought.

A bye system could be like how Ray does the byes for TMD opens, with the winner of a 25+ person event having the chance to purchase a R1 bye. If the person who won the event already has a bye, the chance to buy a bye gets passed to 2nd place and so on.

@Nick, I vote for doing this as well as I'm almost sure I can make this trip which would mean I would be trying to drag some more Dutchies with me.....effectively Dutchjacking this topic AND the tournament....

With everything going on I know for a fact I could make it given enough time structure. One thing everyone needs to realize this is also when people either get there taxes back or are filing them. So I think it's a perfect time to hold an event. I think you might be able to sell or get some money back for dealer space.
