17 Showed the the late (4pm) tourney.  5 Rounds of Swiss and cut to top 4 seemed best.

The meta:

Top 4:
Webster beats LotusHead
JeffTheFob beats Patrick.

Web and Fob split a pearl and $75 trade.  Patrick and I get $50 each trade.  Quite nice prize support for 17 players.
I got paired against Brett Allen round 5.  I thought we could draw in, but JeffTheFob needed to dreamcrush Patrick in round 5 in order to help out Websters chances.  It seems like it worked. Thoughts Hiryu?

Pics and lists will come later.  I got home at midnight.

SB: 1  Relic of Progenitus

I faild to bring with me my MWS version, and forgot my testing changes, which was -2 sucky lands, +2 Blinkmoth Nexus as Clamp Fodder, Arbound Ravager recipiant and general beatstick, and thought I might have had 2 Crucibles in that slot.
On filling out deck registration, I realized I only had 24 mana sources outside of Metalworker. I didn't know what to do, I knew I had Crucible in mind.  This affected some mulligans I think.  But I'm happy how I placed/played.

Lemme know if I misstyped lists.  I'll fix it.

After finishing round 1, I was gonna do some scouting/pics.  I saw Potato playing Shops.  I WAS gonna comment that "Shops never get old, do they?" But apparently, this was a for fun game.  Potato was rocking the Iona deck today.

I hoped there would be few Null Rods today.  Yet Klemic insists on it.  Charles playing blue good cards.

Steel City Vault Y'All!

Brian (left) borrowed 2 Oaths, 3 Orchards and 1 Key from me for his deck of choice: MIRROR MIRROR! I guess Oaths were SB.

Austin flashing the goods in his return to Vintage.

Later that round, Austin Brainstorming into the hotness.  In extra turns, Austin had 2 beaters with Potato at 10.  BS produces 2 more beaters!
Turns out this was game 2, so it ended a draw, which complicates the math for the 17 players 5 rounds swiss cut to top 4.

Dueling DSC's.  For some reason, Patrick Willed, Jarred and Rebuilded the field!

Fob deciding if the Goyf lives or dies.

Webster trying to invoke some insane plays since Welder and Key are on the Battlefield, and Time Vault is in the grave.

Ichorid (I think) vs Mirror Mirror.  Wonder how that turned out?

Fob is hella good at Magic with his first turn Oath!

Hiryu doing something.

Deal with Bob or lose.  Webster opts to deal with Bob.

Austin (Left) sucking.

Someday, I will sleeve up Yawgmoth's Will and bring it to a Vintage tourney.  Ochoa does. I should too.

My game vs Hiryu.  Ioana came out turn 2 or 3, but was 7th from bottom, and I had a few dudes out with Sword of Fire/Ice.  Awkward.
Hiryu probably remembers the details better than I, but as I recall, I got Thorn and 3 wastes very early with dudes in play etc.
Iona was on defense the whole game.  I actually had 13 cards I could side in against Oath (and like 11 cards I had no issue with siding out.)
This wasn't intentional.

Webster destroyed Austin and Myself today.  Austin's hypnotic Yu-Gay-Oh playmat doesn't confuse Webster. At. All.

Top 4: Fob vs Patrick. Don't know what was going on.  I was facing down Webster at the time.

It looks bad for Patrick.  Fob has a full grip and active Oath.

My mini-report later, if I can remember anything.

Wilson was on BUG Fish, David was the sole Ichorid player, Zach was on Tez (I think), and I have no idea what Thomas was playing.  Despite 3 "Iona Oath" in the field, I think all 3 of our versions were tad different: DA, Matt Elias, and vroman's.

I played out round 5 trying to help out Web, Web had to win to make it regardless.  Normally in a 5 rd like this, you have to go 4-1 or better to make top 4.

lol @ bottom 2 standings; scrubs.  ^_^

maybe I'll type up a report, but not bubbling out at top 4/8 and winning an event feels nice for a change.

As it turns out, we totally could have taken the draw.  However, we had no way to know that until Jeff finished his match, because if Patrick doesn't lose then one of us would have been knocked with a draw.

To fill out the metagame coverage, Thomas was playing GWB fish.

Ironically, I did not resolve tendrils once yesterday. DSC for the win (thanks goes to Marske for convincing me to play it over inkwell). On the other hand, as the tournament progressed, every time a tinkered I either got a memory jar when I should have gotten a DSC, or a DSC when clearly a jar would have been a better choice. Also, it was extremely embarrassing when I tried to use BBBBB+UUB for bargain and will, but beyond egregious blunders on my part, I certainly enjoyed all of our games Jeff (both Jeff's actually), Brett, Charles, and Austin. My strategy for the Oath match-up which I played three times was IN: 3 bob, sacrament, pithing needle (jeff had time vault), and a crypt; OUT: timetwister, pearl, ruby, grim tutor, cabal ritual, duress. Not sure if this was the right call, but these were my first iona oath match-ups. Perhaps other TPS pilots could add some insight into boarding versus Oath. I enjoyed siding in the bobs and although not as tough as negators, when they are tanglewire'd they still benefit me.

I should really take notes at tournaments, but my favorite moment was as follows,

My opening hand versus Lotushead with him on the play was: vamp tutor, rebuild, lotus, jet, petal, island, rebuild.
t1: Lotushead plays turn one wasteland, mox?, and a thorn of amethyst.
t2: I draw a sol ring. Play the island which I tap to play the jet which I tap to play the lotus. Sack the lotus for UUU and play the sol ring which I tap and use all mana for rebuild. I then replay the jet tap it for the sol ring, play the petal and pass the turn.
t3: he plays strip, and uses it to play, I believe, the thorn which I play vamp tutor for a tinker in response, and there may have been a metal worker too.
t4: Relieved that he didn't strip the island, I draw tinker, I tap the jet, sol ring, and island to squeak by with a tinker into DSC.

This was a welcome change to successfully win off tinker versus Lotusehead given that at a previous tournament my first turn tinker-->inkwell was met with his second turn sculpting steel. QQ Smile

Thanks for the excellent tournament as usual down at superstars, and the $50 prize support was an unexpected bonus. Although tempted to use it towards the last remaining $275 pack of arabian nights, it was used for fun to get 1 pack of each of the urza block and a pack of futuresight (nothing valuable was pulled Razz).

Wow, that's a lot of pictures!

Great work!

Perhaps I'll change my deck once again next time. Losing to fish that badly was demoralizing.

Re: the photo of my game against Ochoa where I had Welder and Key in play, unfortunately he had Leyline out so my Vault (and everything else good in my deck) was RFG. I just had it all spread out there so I had something pretty to look at while I tried in vain to go the distance by swinging at him for 1 with Welder every turn (which got farther than I would have expected due to his being short on Mana).

I tried running 2 Spellpierces this time but don't think they did me much good. Given all the bobs, probably should have gone with mainboard darkblast and something else. I still can't really decide what those last two slots should be. Have tried Drains, Impulses, and some other weird stuff but I think there's gotta be something better out there. Maybe a mainboard REB...

I think Iona came out on turn 7 or 8.  That game I kept a hand of 2 Orchard, Tropical Island, Oath, Krosan Reclamation, Merchant Scroll, Misdirection.  It's not a great hand, but it seems ok on the play.  Obviously you go turn 1 Lotus, Sol Ring, Wasteland, Thorn of Amethyst, Myr Servitor.  Then you played two more Wastelands and a Sword of Fire and Ice.  I drew more land, but couldn't get a third mana.  I had to tap out for Sol Ring to play Oath on the following turn.  Obviously that's the turn I draw Hellkite.  Pretty must the only way I lose that game is four land denial effects in the first three turns plus me drawing Hellkite.  Ah well.  I still think it's a good matchup for me even after boarding, but I misplayed game 2 by dropping my Needle too early.  Still, if I had ever drawn a green source I probably would have been fine that game too.

As a new TPS pilot and an old Oath pilot, I think you'd be better off leaving Bob on the side and just bringing in the Needle, Sacrament, and Crypt. Bob turns Oath into a one card combo for them, which is bad news for you. Duress is most powerful vs Oath turn 1, so I think you still want the 4 to maximize your chances of hitting it, and GT can get Sacrament, which is an auto-win for you. I truely don't like Bob in the Oath match-up, but again that's more from the perspective of the Oath pilot (with lots of wins vs Bobs) and not the TPS pilot (with no matches vs Oath as of yet)
