So I quit wow back in january and I've been having gamer withdrawal.  I've been spending a lot of time playing civilization 4, and it is fun but I need something new, preferably RPG type.

Any suggestions?

I haven't played it, but I've heard great things about the PC RPG Dragon Age.

There's also Heroes of Newerth, if you're into DotA-style games.  It's still in Beta, but I have a few extra keys if you want one.

For RPGs I agree with the suggestion of Baldur's Gate.  Neverwinter Nights 1&2 are also good if you're into D&D style RPGs.

Oblivion

This is one is fun. Of course you don't play it like it supposed to be played.  With some serious McCheaty skills, you can max out every thing during the tutorial, assassinate everyone immediately and qualify for the assassins guild before you even start the game....

...then it's Necromancer hunting.  Great way to kill about four hours, and about twenty of those nasty death mongers. Unless, you want to play it regularly.

dragon age and mass effect 2 are really short, especially on normal. me2 is incredibly short anyway, in my opinion. but those 2 are excellent

modern warfare 2 is always fun for a swing, maybe 30 mins a day after you get home from work.

I quit wow because I pretty much sank 4 years of my life into it, and it really seemed like the developers have completely run out of ideas.  The new expansion looks like nothing amazing, in addition they just don't give a shit about their customers.  My first account got permanently suspended back in 2009 without any warning because (I sold in real life) a ton of gold that I had accumulated since I started playing in 2006.  But since it's against the Terms of service to do so, they decided that a guy with almost 4 years without a single issue or mark against his record deserved a permanent ban instead of just a warning which is customary.  Obviously I broke the rules, but losing my entire first account for doing it was way harsh of a punishment.

Then I played my second account and started all the way from scratch again and just got sick of it and stopped playing back in January.


Also, I've been playing fallout 3 now for over a week straight, it's got to be the most incredible game I have ever played.  The only thing I don't like is the level cap, I am barely through 25% of the game, and I'm already level 16, so it seems like I'll be spending a lot of time stuck at 20.

I am pretty sure one of the Fallout 3 expansions increases the level cap.  You could play Fallout 3 for years with all the crazy mods out there.

Well I gave up and reinstalled WoW.
I beat fallout 3 and broken steel addon then got bored running around picking up stuff I missed.  At that point I was already insanely rich and had a house full of thousands of extra items I hadn't been able to sell yet.

Is WoW really very good?

On the one hand I played the crap out of Diablo II, so I understand that it's a very addictive formula, but on the other hand I've never felt any desire to play WoW.  I don't understand why people seem to obsess over it.  Maybe I've grown up, just a bit?  <shudder>

/goes back to completing all 64 missions in FFXIII.

On the one hand I played the crap out of Diablo II, so I understand that it's a very addictive formula, but on the other hand I've never felt any desire to play WoW.  I don't understand why people seem to obsess over it.  Maybe I've grown up, just a bit?  <shudder>

WoW starts out as fun because there is just an endless supply of so many different things to do. But, this ends up being the problem in that...there are literally endless things to do. You say you're going to complete all 64 missions in FFXIII and that's fine. You can actually reach that goal. Once you do that, you can say, "ok, I'm done." With WoW, the number of goals to complete literally expands faster than a player can conceivably achieve them. There is no end. At some point it becomes a job rather than fun (at least, in my case), so you stop playing. The question is just how long it takes.

Of course, if you just play a few hours a week, then this isn't really a problem in that you're probably a casual player and will just be glad to do whatever you do in your short time playing, and there's nothing wrong with that. If you want to be one of "the best" though, you're in for a world of hurt.

My post above was more a joke than serious, but the "serious" part is largely what I've posted in this post.

In fairness, since he's playing on Mal'Ganis, completing all you really care to is hypothetically possible. I hear some big name guilds live there.

I was too busy to play much during WOTLK and let my acct expire, so I'm not positive about the progression. It's actually not that bad, a few people are pretty close, that was back almost one year ago, too.  I agree that this guy is a basement dweller, but it's only what you're interested in.  I have no desire to play more than 2-3 nights a week, so that's what I do.

For me it is the exact opposite. i quit arena, and only really raid two nights a week, and just slug around with alts and such. I even have 6 L80s at the current moment, since it's so easy to level, and more fun since you experience very varied gameplay.

Soon, we might even kill the stupid Lich King, although we need to have people be able to evade the Defile. Yes, it's not fun.

Kinda funny, that's almost the exact opposite of my situation. I wanted to raid once or twice a week, but since I'd missed the opening rush and didn't want to spend time leveling alone, ended up stalling out pre-cap.

Amusingly, it did give me the setup for this at a guildie's b-day party:
Random Friend: Blah blah, I'm an amazing healer, blah blah blah.
Me: I'm an amazing healer.
Guildie: Yup, he is.
Me: Unfortunately, I'm also level 76.

I'd disagree here.  I hit worldwide #1 5v5 for months straight playing 2 nights a week, so it's definitely doable.

Raiding is even more hilarious, as lots of top-end guilds will clear everything on Tuesday...and that's it.  Some people just log in for Tuesday, clear everything, do some dailies to buy raid consumables (1 hour on top of the 2-5 you just played) then log out until next Tuesday.
